Question: At what point does the yearly mileage that I put on my car impact my insurance premiums?

Answer: Some car insurance companies offer discounts to motorists who drive fewer miles. As mileage rises, at a certain point — it differs from company to company — you no longer qualify for a discount, which means your rates go up.

There isn’t an insurance industry standard that says if you drive over X amount of miles your rates will be higher.

Car insurance premiums in many instances are, in part, set by the information you provide about your vehicle such as the purpose for it (pleasure, commuter, for work, etc.), how often you drive (to work or to school daily or if it is just a weekend car), and how many miles you put on the car each year. So mileage is just one part of the rating factors that an insurance carrier will take into account.

For example, some insurance companies cutoff for discounts is 15,000; others are much lower at 7,500 and under. How you get the discount varies, too. With some insurance companies you just estimate the mileage you put on your car each year. Other car insurance providers may offer you a discount only if they track your annual mileage.

For instance, GMAC Insurance (now known as National General Insurance) offers a low-mileage discount to OnStar subscribers in 35 states. This is a pay-as-you-drive (PAYD) discount that makes use of telematics technology within the Onstar device. If GMAC finds that you drive less than 15,000 miles a year, you can quality for a discount, which may be anywhere from 10 to 50 percent.

There are other insurers that offer usage-based insurance (UBI) plans that track your mileage and driving behavior with a telematics device and offer you discounts. See our roundup of current PAYD plans to determine if any would work for you.

Analysis by the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) indicates that drivers could save an average of 5 to 10 percent on their car insurance rates if they reduced their annual mileage. They found if you drive less than 10,000 miles annually, you could see savings of about 5 percent on your premium. Less driving means less exposure to situations that could result in an accident. This results in fewer claims and encourages insurers to lower rates.

You will need to ask your insurance company about their specific rating rules regarding this issue. Also, when you are shopping around for insurance you can ask if they discount rates for 10,000, 12,000 or even up to 15,000 miles per year. Don t be afraid to try out a PAYD plan. The savings could be great if your mileage and driving behavior please the insurer.

Asking for a low-mileage discount may help you determine if you can reduce your auto insurance rates enough to make carpooling or mass transit worth the time and effort.

I drive less than 7,500 miles per year; however, when Hartford checked my mileage they said it was more. They considered the time period from Oct. 2015 thru Dec. 2016. which is 15 months. Why are they using 15 months rather than 12?

The CEMS Master’s in International Management (CEMS MIM) is a joint degree delivered by CEMS Academic Members. It is a postgraduate, pre-experience degree open to a select group of students enrolled in a Master’s programme at one of the leading universities in the CEMS Alliance.

The MIM Programme is a one-year “consecutive” Master’s programme in the field of Management, building on previous knowledge acquired by students in their Bachelor’s (or corresponding first cycle) degree studies.

I love UoP but am getting a little disappointed with the advisors with the MBA program. With my bachelors, my academic counselor would call me at the end of each of my classes to make sure all was well and to see if I needed anything with my next class. This was nice because I felt like they cared and didn’t just want my money. Now with my masters I have never heard from him unless I called to ask questions. I am taking a leave of absences for the summer and he never called or changed my schedule and I had to call and talk to someone else cause he is never available. I am currently deciding over the next two months to continue to come back or go some where else.

I wouldn’t recommend this school to anyone! I’ve had nothing but issues with this school. The staff is not helpful at all. Don’t make the same mistake I did and enroll in this program, besides it’s way to expensive. Don’t waste your financial aid. I advise you to check your local community college for the Medical Billing and Coding program if that is what you are interested in. You can finish the program online or in school at the community college for the price of 1 course here at University of Phoenix.

Despite the comments of certain students, University of Phoenix does and only except official transcripts from other highly accredited colleges and universities, such as the the University I came from, which is Saint Joseph’s University. Every writing assignment that is done must follow the APA. Guidelines set by University of Phoenix, and majority of universities and colleges in the United States. University of phoenix has strict rules on plagiarism just like all the other colleges and universities in the United States. University of Phoenix is also highly accredited university. I was accepted to five major law schools in the Philadelphia area, due my transcripts from University of Phoenix and Saint joseph’s University. Now I will say this to other students, just because you may had a miserable time at University of Phoenix don’t push your experience on someone else. Because most likely you would’ve had the same miserable time at Harvard, university Pennsylvania, Penn State, Saint Joseph’s University, temple university, Drexel University. Don’t blame the school because you are a bad learner.

2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid vs. Fusion Energi: Which One Makes More Sense?

Being the only vehicle in its class doesn’t always guarantee a hit, but that can work in the consumers’ favor. Take the Ford Fusion Energi, which for a few years was the only plug-in hybrid in the midsize sedan class. With the average price of gas in the U.S. at $2.24 a gallon (as this is written), it’s no wonder Ford reserves its highest Fusion-line incentives for the plug-in hybrid sedan. If the refreshed 2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid is on your list, though, does the Fusion Energi also merit consideration?

I’ve driven the pre-2017 Fusion Energi plug-in sedan, which doesn’t have the EV-only range of a Chevrolet Volt but looks much nicer than the Chevy and the new Toyota Prius Prime. The Ford has a decent amount of interior space, but the same can’t be said about the trunk, which is just 8.2 cubic feet in the Fusion Energi, down from the Fusion Hybrid’s 12 cu-ft and 16 cu-ft in non-hybrid Fusions. Hope you really like the Fusion Energi’s styling, because that 8.2 cubic feet falls below the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-In’s 9.9, the 2016 Volt’s 10.6, and the 2015 Prius Plug-In’s 21.6. Toyota says the 2017 Prius Prime has more cargo space than that model.

After recently spending some time in the 2017 Fusion Hybrid, I liked the way it drove even though it felt slower than a 2016 Toyota Camry Hybrid. Through the accelerator pedal on the Fusion Hybrid I drove, I felt a little too much vibration, but it’s unclear whether that minor issue is isolated to the cars we drove. Both Fusion hybrid models feel a little heavy but ride well. In Motor Trend testing, a 2013 Fusion Hybrid SE hit 60 in 8.5 seconds, actually 0.6 second slower than a 2014 Fusion Energi Titanium. The Camry Hybrid is objectively quicker, too, at 7.1 seconds to 60, as is a 2016 Malibu Hybrid prototype we tested at 7.4 seconds. The non-PHEV 2016 Sonata Hybrid reached 60 in 8.3 seconds, and we’ve tested 2014 Accord Hybrids hitting 60 in 7.0-7.4 seconds.

To maximize the Fusion Hybrid’s 188 combined-system hp, you could turn off the Eco mode, but I didn’t notice much of a difference with it on or off in our short time with the car. The Low gear button on the top of the modern transmission shift dial proved useful for slowing down without using the brakes, which mostly feel natural except their sensitivity at low speeds. As with most hybrids, they might require a quick learning curve before you get used to it.

Safely hypermiling can be a fun way to enjoy a hybrid, and the Fusion Hybrid continues to offer the leaf/plant graphic on one of the two color instrument cluster screens, adding or dropping leaves depending on how efficiently you drive. If you’re comparing fuel efficiency of any 2016 or 2017 cars, keep in mind the EPA made more stringent the rating process for 2017, so ratings of 2016-model-year cars may or may not carry over to 2017. Having said that, the 2017 Fusion Hybrid’s 43/41 mpg city/highway ratings are respectable, but it’s unclear what to expect for the 2017 Camry Hybrid (40-43/38-39 for 2016), 2017 Sonata Hybrid (39-40/43-44 for 2016), or the 2017 Malibu Hybrid (47/46 mpg for 2016). Honda estimates the 2017 Accord Hybrid will earn 49/47 mpg and 48 mpg combined.

The Fusion Energi hasn’t been EPA-rated, but Ford estimates the car will be rated for about 21 miles of EV-only range before the gas engine automatically kicks in. That’s in line with Toyota ’s not-yet-rated 22-mile estimate for the 2017 Prius Prime and is lower than the 2016 Sonata Plug-In Hybrid’s 27 miles (the 2017 model could change) and 2017 Chevrolet Volt ’s 53 miles. Depending on your commute, opting for any of these plug-ins could make for a much quieter commute to work.

Regardless of whether you opt for the Fusion’s suite of active safety tech, the Ford does well in safety tests. The updated 2017 model has yet to be safety-tested by the NHTSA and IIHS, but all 2016 Fusions received an overall five-star rating from the NHTSA like the Sonata, Malibu, Camry, and Accord. The 2016 Fusion line got Good ratings in four IIHS categories and one Acceptable rating, though that could change for 2017. The 2016 Malibu hasn’t yet been fully IIHS tested, but the 2016 Sonata, Accord, and Camry have IIHS Top Safety Pick + ratings.

Deal-seekers might want to take note of aggressive incentives Ford is offering on the Energi model. The incentives, which as this is written appear to range from about $4,000 to $5,500 depending on your ZIP code, slash the plug-in’s price to not much more than that of the non-PHEV hybrid model. The math is different depending on where you live, but driving a plug-in can be more fun as you try to maximize your engine-less, quiet driving time.

The hybrid and plug-in hybrid segments are about to become more crowded, with new entries from Hyundai. Honda. and Kia on the way. The Fusion hybrids aren’t the most efficient or cargo-friendly in their classes, but they drive well and boast attractive looks in a sedan body style. At the right price, they might just make sense.

SIU’s May 13 graduation at the SIU Arena marked the end of a successful semester for students. U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-East Moline, was the keynote speaker at the ceremony for the College of Business and the College of Education and Human Services. Saturday was a special day for individuals who walked across the stage to receive the degrees that they have worked diligently to earn, and some graduates shared their thoughts about their time in the College of Business.

Summer internships are important for students of any level in college, as they give students an opportunity to gain real world experience and to apply what they have learned in the classroom. To that end, the Business Placement Center has a variety of resources available for students, including Connect2Careers, career counseling, business career tools, and much more.

The Department of Management hosted a panel for students on April 27 in Morris Library. Nearly 100 students attended one of the two panel sessions. Pete Mykytyn, department chair and professor of management, played a big role in making the management panel possible for students. “The purpose of the panel is to enlighten students about a whole lot of things,” Mykytyn said. “There are a number of points that the panelists will bring up and students will also have the opportunity to ask questions.”

A social engineer runs what used to be called a con game. Techniques such as appeal to vanity, appeal to authority and appeal to greed are often used in social engineering attacks. Many social engineering exploits simply rely on people’s willingness to be helpful. For example, the attacker might pretend to be a co-worker who has some kind of urgent problem that requires access to additional network resources.

Popular types of social engineering attacks include:

  • Baiting. Baiting is when an attacker leaves a malware-infected physical device, such as a USB flash drive in a place it is sure to be found. The finder then picks up the device and loads it onto his or her computer, unintentionally installing the malware.
  • Phishing . Phishing is when a malicious party sends a fraudulent email disguised as a legitimate email, often purporting to be from a trusted source. The message is meant to trick the recipient into sharing personal or financial information or clicking on a link that installs malware.
  • Spear phishing . Spear phishing is like phishing, but tailored for a specific individual or organization.
  • Pretexting . Pretexting is when one party lies to another to gain access to privileged data. For example, a pretexting scam could involve an attacker who pretends to need personal or financial data in order to confirm the identity of the recipient.
  • Scareware . Scareware involves tricking the victim into thinking his computer is infected with malware or has inadvertently downloaded illegal content. The attacker then offers the victim a solution that will fix the bogus problem; in reality, the victim is simply tricked into downloading and installing the attacker’s malware.

Security experts recommend that IT departments regularly carry out penetration tests that use social engineering techniques. This will help administrators learn which types of users pose the most risk for specific types of attacks while also identifying which employees require additional training. Security awareness training can go a long way towards preventing social engineering attacks. If people know what forms social engineering attacks are likely to take, they will be less likely to become victims.

I work with a lot of different businesses across many and the only somewhat successful thing I have witnessed any organization use to combat social engineering is periodic testing and ongoing awareness. Though not perfect in any sense, they’re still better than doing nothing. which is what the majority of organizations do.

You have to be careful, especially with social engineering. You create your own circumstances in security by the choices you make .It’s the law of sowing and reaping: both actions and inactions will get you results.

I educate my staff about the commonly used social engineering tactics and keep them abreast of ongoing scams. So far, we have had no incidents, even though we have had a couple of attempts on our admissions staff. Over the three years since I have been doing this, We have had three near-misses that were reported to me immediately and nipped. I don’t do testing or any other inspection before the fact. My staff have proven that they are aware enough to inform me of anything that seems suspicious.

Research on Early Childhood Education

Economist Robert G. Lynch found that investment in high quality prekindergarten programs generates billions of dollars in economic and other benefits for the federal and state governments. The study, Enriching Children, Enriching the Nation. published by the nonpartisan Economic Policy Institute, shows huge benefits whether programs are universal or targeted to three- and four-year-old children from poor families.

A longitudinal study of participants in a Chicago public schools program serving preK through third grade students reported that at age 24 program participants had acquired more education and were less likely to commit crimes than those who did not receive the same level of service. This study is a 19-year followup report in an ongoing study of Chicago’s Child-Parent Center program, which appears in the August 2007 issue of the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, a monthly journal.

PreK Program Pays Off in Academic Development

New Mexico’s preK initiative is paying off for its four-year-old participants in greater improvement in early language, literacy, and math development, according to The Effects of the New Mexico PreK Initiative on Young Children’s School Readiness . a study released August 2007 by the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) at Rutgers University. The research was conducted by Jason T. Hustedt, W. Steven Barnett, and Kwanghee Jung.

Policy Makers Should Consider Full-Day Preschool (May 2006)

A study by the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) finds that the benefits of full-day preschool over half-day programs are significant and concludes that “policy makers should strongly consider implementation of full-day preschool.” The report discusses a randomized trial that compared children from low-income families in half-day and full-day public preschool programs.

Results show that children attending full-day programs did better on mathematics and literacy tests than children in a 2.5 to 3-hour public preschool program and the achievement gains continued at least until the end of first grade.

Benefits of Preschool

The journal Developmental Psychology has published research that confirms that Oklahoma’s pre-kindergarten program is successfully helping kids prepare for school. (Oklahoma is one of the few states to offer preschool to every four year old.) While learning gains were made by children of different racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, the study found the most significant improvements among Hispanic children. Researchers made a point of noting that the preschool program was staffed by well-educated, well-trained teachers who earn regular public school salaries.

Microsoft’s next mobile strategy is to make iOS and Android better

Microsoft hasn’t had a great time with mobile. While we can debate whether or not Windows Phone is finally dead. Microsoft is certainly ready to move on. After missing the mobile boat, Microsoft is now trying to sneak onto iOS and Android devices like a stealthy submarine. We’ve seen the company focus on iOS and Android apps before, but at the Build event in Seattle this week the message is clear: Microsoft is finally being realistic.

Microsoft’s new push is to convince Windows users it can help them resume activities and apps even if they’re using an iPhone or Android device. The idea is simple: it doesn’t matter what devices you’re using in the Microsoft world as long as one of them is Windows. Microsoft has a number of different tricks to try and make this a reality, and it truly believes it can help make iOS and Android devices better as a result.

I sat down with Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore during an unusually sunny day in Seattle this week to try and understand the company’s latest mobile efforts. Belfiore returned to Microsoft after a year out traveling the world with his family. To many, he is the face of Windows Phone, an operating system he championed and helped nurture to life. A year of traveling the world will have a profound effect on anyone, but Belfiore also used this time to experiment heavily with other platforms. He’s tweeted his quirky hairdos with an iPhone. visited schools thousands of miles from Microsoft’s headquarters in Seattle, and generally experienced life away from a town where you’ll see people walking around in Cortana t-shirts while using Windows Phones. His journey let him see a world most of Microsoft doesn’t; Seattle itself is often a weird bubble that’s too influenced by Microsoft to properly reflect reality.

Microsoft gets it

Belfiore seems to get it more than ever now, and Microsoft is reacting. Belfiore set out a scenario of a typical Windows user to me, and one that uses multiple devices that aren’t always powered by Windows. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella predicts that at some point everyone is going to have an average of six devices they use regularly, and Microsoft knows most of them won’t be running Windows. Microsoft’s response is to make experiences on iOS and Android devices better. It sounds counter-intuitive, but it’s a lot more useful to the average Windows user than trying to sell them a Windows-powered phone.

Microsoft is unveiling a number of new features in Windows 10 today that will improve the experience of moving content to devices like an iPhone or Android handset. You could argue that many of these new features are inspired by Apple’s macOS, but Microsoft isn’t trying to lock you into its ecosystem to make use of them. Right now, it’s a little complicated if you want to use a Windows laptop and an iPhone or Android device. Microsoft has a variety of apps for these platforms, but they don’t always talk to each other as well as they should.

“There’s work we can do to help people live in that complex life in a more orchestrated kind of way,” explains Belfiore. “We’re going to do a bunch of work that’s focused on the idea of Windows PCs love devices.” This new love of devices that don’t run Windows is a little odd coming from Microsoft, but it fits into the message that CEO Satya Nadella has constantly pushed; Microsoft is interested in the person behind the screen, not just what software they’re using.

New Windows features let you resume on mobile devices

Microsoft is introducing new Timeline and Cortana features that let you resume apps where you left off on other Windows 10 devices, and even iPhone and Android phones. The company is also using its Microsoft Graph cloud service to enable developers to link their apps across phones and PCs. The Graph will act as the gateway to let these mobile apps talk to their desktop counterparts and provide rich functionality like resuming exact reading points in a news app, or simply continuing to edit a Word document at the right paragraph. “What we hope people will do is, once you have users at least engaging if not loving your apps, log your activities in the Graph,” says Belfiore. “When this happens, we work through the Windows shell and Cortana will help to promote app experiences so people can pick up where you left off.”

This pick up where you left off concept will also include a clipboard feature that lets you copy content from a Windows 10 PC directly to an iPhone or Android device. Microsoft is making use of its SwiftKey acquisition to bring this clipboard functionality directly to the keyboard on these devices, so any app will support it.

It all feels like very early days, but it’s certainly a big and bold bet. Microsoft is shifting to make other devices better, especially ones that don’t run Windows. Microsoft’s bet here is to move Windows experiences beyond the laptop or PC and into apps that are meaningful on smartphones that will help keep consumers coming back to Windows. “We’re trying to meet all of our Windows users where they really are in their day-to-day lives,” says Belfiore.

Microsoft faces major challenges here

This isn’t going to be easy for Microsoft. Apple restricts its ecosystem in a number of different ways, especially when it comes to accessing things as simple as text messages. That’s not stopping Microsoft, though. “One big difference about what we’re doing from what I’ve seen Apple doing so far is that we’re really embracing devices broadly,” explains Belfiore. “We’re really going to provide a high degree of flexibility to end users and to our customers to pick whatever device.”

When there are iOS or Android roadblocks, Belfiore says the company will “do the best we can” to work around them. ” We’re going to try and build the best experience for the customers that have chosen that platform.”

Looking ahead, Microsoft sees itself as the organizer for this cross-platform experience. “In society people are using tons of devices and as yet there’s not a way to orchestrate what you do across them. It’s unorganized,” says Belfiore. “For us what the vision is being human-centered. You’re a person that does different activities and you’re going to choose different devices from different companies so we’re going to make sense of that for you.”

Will Microsoft succeed here and provide a digital life for consumers across iOS, Android, and Windows? Microsoft is going to give it a serious shot. “We’re going to try.”

NCCA Christian Counseling Certification

Program One provides NCCA certification as a Christian Counselor. This program is designed for ministers and other ordained clergy who primarily need training and an NCCA certification without additional degrees. This program is also popular with counselors who already have their Christian counseling degrees or other psychology, social work and mental health degrees. No new Christian counseling degree is conferred. Completion of Program 1 provides the following designations:

About the Program

This comprehensive CNC program has been designed to prepare the participant for many careers in the manufacturing industry and machine shop environment. Participants will be able to understand and apply Computerized Numerical Control technology (CNC) from basic to advanced applications. Participants will also be developing CNC programs for various CNC machines such as drills, mills, machining centres and lathes, using verifiable manual and computerized methods of part program preparation. The focus of the program is on practical industrial applications, problem solving and professional approach.

All courses must be completed within 3 years of acceptance into the program.

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, OR 19 years of age or older.

    MAPS Chronic Pain Program

    The MAPS comprehensive, four-week Chronic Pain Program (CPP) offers clinic patients an empowering environment for learning chronic pain management strategies and coping skills. Clinic patients get to learn alongside fellow pain sufferers under the compassionate guidance of the Chronic Pain Program’s expertly trained staff.

    Chronic Pain Program patients who attend our land and warm pool exercises increase their overall strength during the course of the chronic pain management program. Land exercise focuses on postural improvements in daily activities. Pool exercise (a favorite of many Chronic Pain Program graduates) helps pain management patients gently increase tolerance to strength, flexibility, coordination and activity.

    Relaxation sessions and discussion group meetings are also key components of this chronic pain management program. In our relaxation sessions, clinic patients learn a variety of approaches to relaxation, including but not limited to breathing techniques, neuromuscular education and guided imagery. Chronic Pain Program discussion group meetings educate clinic patients on self-managing pain and stress, covering topics such as depression management, stress management, nutrition, sleep, the nervous system, goal setting, acceptance and anxiety management. MAPS psychologists, physical therapists, nurse practitioners and RN specialists lead these groups.

    Most Chronic Pain Program patients have experienced chronic pain for many years and have tried numerous pain management treatments. A MAPS psychologist initially meets with each clinic patient to assess medical history, emotional health and coping skills. Prospective patients must also meet with a MAPS physical therapist for a physical evaluation prior to moving forward. Before starting this chronic pain management program, insurance coverage will be confirmed by our prior authorization department.

    Midpoint and discharge meetings are held between the clinic patient, Chronic Pain Program psychologist, nurse practitioner and RN during week two and at the end of week four of this chronic pain management program. In order to gauge further success, patient evaluations are performed at three-, six- and 12-month intervals upon completion of the chronic pain management program.

    Facilitated aftercare support groups, which are held twice per month, are available for Chronic Pain Program graduates. Those who have successfully completed this chronic pain management program are welcome to attend as often as they desire. Independent use of the MAPS therapy pools is also available for three months after completion of the program.

    Since its inception in 2000, the MAPS Chronic Pain Program has helped nearly 1,000 patients.

    Solving Basement Water Problems

    Laid-up masonry basement walls on concrete footers are sturdy, economical, and comparatively simple to erect. Combine those attributes with the fact that they allow great design flexibility, and you’ve got a pretty fair explanation of why concrete block basement walls are so common. Unfortunately, water leaks all too often seem to be another standard feature of block basement walls.

    Solving Basement Water Problems

    Once you’ve determined where the water in your basement is coming from, follow the key numbers to find solutions appropriate to your problems. Try the lowest-numbered solutions first, and move on to more drastic measures — such as digging up the foundation and installing a drain — only if the easier approaches fail.

    [1] Landscaping

    The simplest, least expensive way to solve surface water problems is to landscape the area around your house to prevent surface water from saturating the soil next to the basement walls. The ground should slope downward from the house at least 4 inches in the first 6 feet, and no shrubs or trees should be planted closer than 3 feet from the walls.

    In a location where the terrain itself slopes significantly, it may not be practical to grade the entire area around the house to reroute drainage. In such a case, a shallow valley can be cut about 12 feet out from the wall to catch runoff and route it around the house. This depression need not be severe; a 1-foot-deep trench with gentle sides will channel a great deal of water and will still be easy to mow.

    [2] Water-shedding layer

    If you’re forced to strip back more than a few inches of topsoil to achieve the proper grading, it’s probably worthwhile to continue digging down to a point about a foot below the previous grade, and to then lay down a sheet of 10-mil polyethylene before replacing the soil. This barrier will usher water away from the basement walls.

    [3] Redo sidewalks or porches that are poorly sloped or loose to the foundation.

    It may sound drastic to rip up a sidewalk or porch and replace it, but this is still a much easier undertaking than uprooting the house’s footings. Break up the old concrete, and dig down 4 inches below what was the level of the underside of the slab. Lay a 4-inch layer of gravel for drainage, and set the forms for the new concrete so that the new slab or sidewalk will slope away from the foundation wall about 1 inch in 10 feet. Use a watertight expansion joint between the new concrete and the foundation wall.

    [4] Investigate and repair the perimeter drain system

    Unless you live in a very dry area, your home’s foundation should have a footing perimeter drain. There are two general types: On lots with sufficient slope, the drain may work by gravity, emptying out into a storm sewer downhill from your house’s foundation. On level terrain, the perimeter drain should be tied to a sump pump in the basement by drain lines that run under the footing, as shown in Figure 1 (See water problem diagrams in the image gallery ).

    Sump pump systems: If you’ve got a sump pump, you’re also almost certain to have a perimeter drain. In this case, if your pump is working but you’ve still got a water problem, at least a portion of the foundation drain isn’t flowing properly to the sump.

    Gravity systems: Lacking advice from the builder or original owner, you may not find it easy to figure out whether your home has a gravity drain system. To confirm its existence, you’ll have to either locate the outlet for the system or dig down and look. If you find no drain, it’s time to call in a pro with a backhoe and have him or her put one in.

    Assuming that you have a drain system and that all the accessible portions are in good or der, the difficulty may be that a section has become plugged or has collapsed. Either is a serious problem, but it still may not be necessary to uproot the whole foundation. If you can pinpoint where water is leaking into the basement by examining the inside of the wall, there’s a good chance that the problem area will be directly outside.

    Barring that, you can test the drain system from the outside with a garden hose. Sump pump systems can be probed by attaching a 6-foot length of steel 1/2-inch water pipe to the hose and using the jet of water to bore down to the footing. Move around the basement walls in 6-foot intervals and look for locations where water doesn’t get to the sump in the basement. For gravity systems, just saturate the soil next to the exterior basement wall in a suspected area for several hours. If you get a gusher inside, you’ve found a good place to start digging.

    [5] Add a perimeter drain system and sump pump

    This is no small undertaking; you may want to consider hiring someone with the proper tools to do it for you. Nonetheless, here are the basics: Start from inside the basement by cutting a hole for a sump in the concrete slab about 2 feet from the basement wall. This hole will need to be about 2 feet in diameter, but you should find out the exact size of the sump tile (clay, concrete, or plastic) from your plumbing supplier.

    Before placing the tile, dig a horizontal 6-inch-diameter hole under, and to the outside edge of, the footing. Place a section of 4-inch plastic pipe in the hole, and then complete the sump pump installation. By doing this work first, you’ll be sure that any rain that arrives while the footing is exposed will head straight for the sump.

    A small backhoe will cut the time and effort needed to dig up the footings by several orders of magnitude. But if you’ve got a strong back and plenty of perserverance, you can save quite a bit of money by hefting a shovel yourself. Whichever approach you choose, start where the 4-inch pipe passes under the footing and dig a tapering trench all the way to the bottom of the footing. At the bottom, the ditch should be 10 to 12 inches wide to allow room for the tile and gravel. Continue around the house, tunneling under sidewalks when you can or leaving out the drain where it’s impractical to go under a larger section of concrete. Once the trench is finished, clean the wall thoroughly, and use Figure 1 (See water problem diagrams in the image gallery ) as a guide for installing the drain, the waterproofing, and the backfill.

    [6] Install a slab drain system for high groundwater

    If your water problems stem from a rising water table, a perimeter drain alone won’t dry out your basement. You need a way for water to get to the sump from both inside and outside of the footings.

    What I’m about to describe involves backbreaking labor — yours or your employee’s — but I don’t know any way to get around it. You’re going to remove a 3-foot-wide section of your basement floor all the way around the inside perimeter of the basement walls.

    Start by breaking out the floor and digging the hole for the sump pump, and then work along parallel to the wall removing a piece of the slab at a time in a 3-foot swath. This will go more quickly and easily than you might think if you’ll undermine a section of the floor with a shovel to the depth of the shovel blade and then break the unsupported slab with a 10-pound sledge.

    Use Figure 2 as a guide (See water problem diagrams in the image gallery ) for installing the gravel and drain tile and repouring the floor. Be sure to include the weep holes and the inch of gravel on top of the footing and the weep holes so that water can drain from the block cores to the sump. Keep the new concrete — mixed at a ratio of about 1 part portland to 4 parts fine, clean gravel — level with, or about the thickness of a sheet of paper higher than, the adjoining old concrete.

    [7] Install a block drain system

    One solution to water that’s draining down through block cores to leak out between the joint of the wall and the floor is to drain the block cores to a sump pump. Go up about 4 inches from the floor to avoid mortar that may have dropped to the bottom of the cores, and drill a hole in each block core. Caulk a short piece of plastic pipe into each hole, and plumb the drains together with appropriate Ts so they lead to the sump. Observe proper drain slope of 1/4 inch per foot, so that water doesn’t back up.

    Salesforce, QuickBooks, and Lightning

    I amk working on presenting QuickBooks data in SFDC and saw the Lightning demo this morning. What do I need on the QB side to make this possible?

    I did try to experiment with Lightning and did not have a type to create the external data source. I assume I am missing a bridge app of some sort. Any help is appreciated.

    Presenting Quickbooks data and integrating QB are two very different things. To present you data you could export your QB data and import it, which is fairly simple. In fact, you might be able to make a simple integration work this way if you use an automatic data loader like Jitterbit. But this would still likely involve a manual export and Apex triggers to prevent reentering data already in Salesforce.

    Creating a two-way sync (or even one way) is a much bigger project and the closest thing to an off the shelf app to integrate the two would be DBsync, Interweave, or Zapier. I ve tried DBsync, and it does work, but it s not cheap or as plug-and-play as they make it seem. I haven t tried Zapier with Quickbooks, but I know for some projects it works great and some not so well due to API structures/endpoints. Intereweave I have no idea, but they have good ratings on the appExchange. Overall there are surprisingly few QB integration apps (with QB even abandoning their own Salesforce connector app last year). Hopefull this situation changes in the future.

    The third option is to code a custom API connection which is the most complicated but the most customizeable. I think for most organizations one of the options above will work well enough and not necessitate and full blown custom solution.

    I too am looking at linking data between SF QB. Im thinking there should be away of linking them via Salesforce Connect, hooking up Quickbooks as an external data source. Probably depends on your version of Quickbooks and how you host you company data

    Keep in mind that Quickbooks is an application, not just a data source. If you want to integrate (exchange data and update Salesforce data as a result of changes in Quickbooks, and update Quickbooks as a result of changes in Salesforce, you need an integration solution.     What you need to know about CME Conferences Outside North American Area

While we have considered the allure that offering such destinations can have, we believe that part of the premium service we provide includes the peace of mind that comes with avoiding raising red flags with the IRS.

    Healthcare providers could be in for a surprise when seeking to deduct expenses for continuing medical education seminars, medical conventions and meetings being held outside the North American Area. The IRS has specific requirements when it comes to attending continuing medical education conferences in these locations and, while there are many courses offered in such places, not all CME seminars are created equally.

    To ensure against sending the IRS an unnecessary red flag saying, “audit me,” take a moment to check your answers to some of the most common questions posed by the IRS. Below is a brief but effective checklist:

    1) Does the CME seminar being held outside the North American area meet the “Reasonableness Test?” The IRS will take into account the following factors to determine whether the continuing medical education seminar you chose meets its criteria for reasonableness:

    – The purpose of the meeting and its activities
    – The purpose of the sponsoring organization or group and its activities
    – The homes of the sponsoring organizations’ active members, along with the places at which other meetings they provide have been held or will be held
    – Other factors you believe to be relevant

    2) Is the CME seminar or other medical event being held on a cruise ship? All ships that sail are considered cruise ships. The IRS will allow a deduction of expenses up to $2,000 per year for attending conventions or similar events on cruise ships, provided they meet the following requirements:

    – It must be directly related to your trade or business
    – All ports of call are located in the United States or in its possessions
    – The vessel itself must be registered in the U.S.
    – A written attachment to your tax return that is signed by you that identifies the total number of days of the trip (not including days of transportation to/from the cruise ship port), a program identifying the scheduled business activities of the meeting, seminar, or convention, along with the number of hours each day that you devoted to them.
    – A written attachment to your tax return that is signed by an officer of the organization or group that sponsored the meeting that verifies the business activities of each day of the meeting and the number of hours you attended those scheduled activities.
