Two Tools for Testing DNS Server Speeds

While DNS services often advertise fast speeds and an improved web browsing experience, actual speeds can significantly vary. Discover two tools that help in finding the DNS server that will work best for you.

Most DNS services advertise fast speeds and how they can help speed up your web browsing. However, the DNS speeds you experience aren’t just based upon how fast the DNS servers are; the speeds are also influenced by how far the servers are from your location.

To see which DNS servers are truly the fastest, consider running some speed tests. You might find that the “fast” DNS service you’re using is actually not so speedy after all. Today we’ll discuss two different DNS benchmarking tools you can use to check the performance of your current server and others as well.

    NameBench

NameBench is a great free, open-source DNS benchmarking utility available for Windows, Mac OS X and UNIX.

By default, NameBench tests your current DNS servers while also letting you enter specific addresses of other servers. Additionally, you can enable an option to include some of the most popular public DNS servers, such as Google, OpenDNS and UltraDNS. Another option will test the fastest regional DNS servers in your area. Furthermore, you can have NameBench include censorship checks to test those that provide filtering services.

After running NameBench, the results will show you the fastest DNS server available for your particular computer, based upon the exact web sites you visit using the browser cache of your choice, or if you prefer, NameBench can check using the top 2,000 websites listed by Alexa. In the end, it will provide a prioritized list of three server addresses it recommends.

    GRC’s DNS Benchmark

DNS Benchmark is a free Windows program from GRC that can test the performance of local and remote DNS servers. While it is not directly available for Mac OS X or Linux, it is compatible with Wine.

When you open the DNS Benchmark program, you can read about what DNS is and how the tool can help on the Introduction tab. Then on the Nameservers tab you can see the list of servers that will be tested, along with their IP address and hostname. On the Owner sub-tab you can see the server IPs along with the company’s name.

On the Status sub-tab you can see which servers are responding. On the Response Time sub-tab you’ll see a performance bar chart summarizing each DNS server’s performance after testing is complete.

By default, DNS Benchmark tests your current DNS server and a few other popular ones, such as Google, OpenDNS and UltraDNS. You can also enter specific addresses of other servers, or use DNS Benchmark’s feature for finding the top fastest 50. After starting the benchmark testing, you can see real-time results on the TabularData sub-tab. Then when complete, the final results will be shown along with personalized recommendations.

Unlike NameBench, DNS Benchmark won’t test the DNS speeds by resolving the domains you’ve already visited using your browser cache. GRC’s tool instead checks speeds by resolving the domains from the top 50 websites, but that list is customizable.

    Summary

Though a DNS service may advertise faster browsing if you utilize their nameservers rather than the default ones provided by your ISP, actual speeds can significantly vary depending upon your location and the sites you visit. NameBench and DNS Benchmark are two helpful tools you can use to determine the DNS server that will work best for you.

But if you use a certain service for a particular reason if it provides content filtering or ad blocking, for example you may not have much of a choice.

    BMW 3-series

    BMW 3-series

    Barbarians at the vortex.

    2017 BMW 3-series BMW 3-series 2017 4.5 1.0 5.0

The battle for the soul of BMW rages on, although one side is clearly winning: those driving the company toward mainstream appeal in its core models as well as futurists who advocate for electric cars, increased hybridization, and across-the-board adoption of semi-autonomous driving systems. The other side is aligned with BMW’s once-granitic core, the Ultimate Driving Machine faithful, dedicated to fine-tuning several thousand pounds of metal and rubber and passion to respond as if it were hard-wired to your brain. You can probably guess how we stand on this.

Into this vortex rolls the 2017 BMW 330i sedan. Don’t confuse it with the 3.0-liter six-cylinder powered four-door of the same name that last appeared here in 2006. The 2017 330i is a sedan with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that replaces last year’s 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder 328i. In place of the former engine, the 330i employs the new B46 powerplant, which first appeared last year in the X1 and then rolled into the 2-series and even the Mini Cooper S. It’s part of the lightweight, low-friction modular engine family that also spawned the turbocharged inline-six in the new 340i.

For the B46, BMW shrunk the bore but increased the stroke and, combined with some other internal engine improvements, achieved an output of 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the 328’s N20, which developed its 255 lb-ft of peak torque at just 1250 rpm, the 330’s B46 wants 1450 rpm to peak, so BMW adjusted gearing accordingly. (The 2017 car has a wider ratio spread in its eight-speed ZF automatic and uses a numerically lower final-drive ratio.)

Yet despite all of this fiddling around with drivetrains, the 2017 330i feels remarkably similar to the 2016 328i. That’s good if you think recent four-cylinder BMWs are great. It’s not so great if you’re bothered by the slight thrumming and belt-sander-esque sound of modern four-cylinder BMWs at full throat. Having been seduced by the silken song and velvety power delivery of the BMW inline-six, which has graced the engine bays of 3-series sedans since 1983, it’s hard to snuggle up to the four-banger. Just sayin’.

    Powered Up but Not Faster

As for the added eight horsepower and taller gearing, we really didn’t feel it. Not that the 330i is sluggish—far from it. In our testing, the 330i achieved 60 mph from rest in 5.4 seconds, just a tenth or two off the 5.2- and 5.3-second runs of the 2016 328i and the 328i xDrive and 0.6 second behind the 4.8-second run of the turbo-six-powered 2016 340i. There was zero turbo lag with the engine’s twin-scroll setup. BMW has stated that a key goal for the new modular Efficient Dynamics engine family is improved fuel economy. At an EPA-estimated 23 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, the new 330i automatic comes in a bit short of last year’s 328i, rated at 23/35. But our 25-mpg observed fuel economy for the 330i over two weeks of hammering it hard over our favorite test roads may be more revealing; the last 328i we tested returned just 21 mpg. Also encouraging is that the 330i yielded 41 mpg on our 200-mile, 75-mph highway test.

In our braking and lateral-grip tests, the new 330i’s 168-foot stop from 70 mph and 0.83-g skidpad performance were within spitting distance of the numbers achieved by the 2016 328i xDrive. Passable, considering the less-than-sticky Continental ContiSportContact summer tires mounted to our test car. But 0.83 g would have tied with the Toyota Camry SE, the loser in our most recent comparison test of four mid-size family sedans, a decidedly nonsporty bunch. The braking figure, at least, is better than average. We experienced more free travel than we’d like at the top of the brake pedal, but the binders firmed up and were plenty strong and easy to modulate once you got there—with zero fade.

    Fuzzy Around the Edges

It’s in subjective areas where the roundel has lost more of its shine. The current F30 3-series is entering its sixth year in this market and, despite a mild freshening for 2016 models. looks and feels dated. We’re not talking only about the 3-series’ electrically boosted steering that continues to please with its surgical precision but frustrates due to a deficit in feedback. Compared with, say, the new Audi A4 or Mercedes-Benz C-class. the BMW sedan feels more confining and more plasticky inside.

There are other fuzzy edges. The 330i’s fuel-saving stop/start system is very abrupt on startup, and it isn’t as smooth as those we’ve experienced recently in some Mercedes-Benz or even Chevrolet products. BMW long ago decided to favor run-flat tires to reduce vehicle mass while optimizing trunk space, but the optional 18-inch wheel-and-tire setup on our test car suffered some brutal impact harshness over almost unseen concrete dividers and potholes. Road sizzle, particularly with the larger 18-inch wheel (17s are standard), intrudes from the rear, especially, when traveling over brushed concrete or high-aggregate-content asphalt pavement. You have to turn up the radio or talk louder to compensate. We noted that the ride quality was, outside of the choppy run-flat tires, quite good—but the body bounced and floated on some bumpy back roads, not traditional BMW behaviors. The car still transitions into corners well, and its primary controls have a harmonious, single-purpose feel that makes driving quickly a breeze.

The 3-series is basically a sedan with coupe proportions, so the 330i’s rear-seat legroom is tight. And the 330i’s center-stack display screen is pretty small by today’s standards.

    Core Values

The 330i we tested represents the core of the BMW brand as it stands today, being softer and more comfort-focused than in generations past. The four-cylinder turbo automatic is the best-selling 3-series drivetrain combination in the United States. And the 3-series, whether or not you include the mechanically similar 4-series coupes and convertibles, is both the top-selling BMW and easily the sales leader in the entry-luxury sports-sedan segment. At a $47,645 as-tested price and displaying remarkable restraint in the options department, this 330i is the kind of sports sedan you might spec out yourself or recommend to a friend. On top of the $39,745 base price, our test 330i was upgraded with leather trim ($1450); a driver-assistance package consisting of a backup camera and sonar park-distance control ($950); a premium package with keyless entry, a sunroof, adjustable front-seat lumbar support, and SiriusXM satellite radio ($2450); 18-inch aluminum wheels ($600); heated front seats ($500); and navigation ($1950).

Despite its lost luster, the BMW 3-series remains the entry-luxe sports sedan that all other carmakers judge theirs against—the sales numbers are hard to deny. We keep poking BMW to improve steering feedback, but the 3er does have competent dynamics; firm, supportive front seats; great ergonomics; and a right-size feeling to recommend it. But the current F30 generation is showing some gray around the temples, something the brand needs to address with an all-new version—that, and performance numbers that suggest that competitors who’ve aimed at BMW’s icon are hitting the target. If the battle swirling around the BMW roundel is any indication, a quicker response would be better than a delayed one.

    Highs and Lows

    Highs:

Responsive steering, efficient and strong four-cylinder engine, top-shelf ergonomics.

    Lows:

Four-banger not as velvety as the six, steering remains lifeless, some gray showing at the temples.

    What Are CPT Codes?

    Updated May 25, 2017

Whenever you have a medical procedure performed or health care service provided, it is coded in your medical record for tracking and billing. CPT codes and HCPCS codes are related systems of medical coding required for providers and insurers to send information electronically. See how they are used and what they mean for your health care.

    What Are CPT Codes?

CPT (Common Procedural Technology) codes are numbers assigned to every task and service a medical practitioner may provide to a patient including medical, surgical, and diagnostic services.

They are used by insurers to determine the amount of reimbursement that a practitioner will receive by an insurer for that service. Since everyone uses the same codes to mean the same thing, they ensure uniformity.

A CPT code looks like a five-digit numeric code with no decimal marks, although some have four number and one letter. Some are used frequently like 99213 or 99214 (for general check ups).

CPT codes are developed, maintained and copyrighted by the AMA (American Medical Association). As the practice of health care changes, new codes are developed for new services, current codes may be revised, and old, unused codes are discarded. Thousands of codes are in use, and they are updated annually.

Uniformity in understanding what the service is and the amount different practitioners get reimbursed will not necessarily be the same. That is determined by the contracts between individual providers and insurers.

    Verywell Today

Stay up-to-date on the latest health trends and studies.

For example, Doctor A may perform a physical check up (99396) and be reimbursed $100 by your insurance company. If you went to Doctor B, his reimbursement by your insurance company for that same checkup, Code 99396, might only be $90.

How Are HCPCS Codes Related to CPS Codes?

HCPCS stands for Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System.

They are codes used and maintained by the Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services and are used to bill Medicare, Medicaid, and many other third-party payers. If you use Medicare, you ll see HCPCS codes in your paperwork.

There are two levels of codes. Level I codes are based on CPT codes (they are basically identical) and used for services and procedures usually provided by physicians. Level II codes cover health care services and procedures that aren t provided by physicians. Examples of items billed with level II codes are medical equipment, supplies, and ambulance services. HCPCS level II codes start with a letter and have four numbers. They can have modifiers that are either two letters or a letter and a number.

    Examples of CPT Codes

    • 99214 may be used for an office visit
    • 99397 may be used for a preventive exam if you are over 65
    • 90658 indicates a flu shot
    • 90716 may be used for chicken pox vaccine (varicella)
    • 12002 may be used to stitch up a one-inch cut on a patient s arm

Some CPT codes are bundled. That is, they are used in combination with each other so they actually describe a number of aspects of care.

Matching CPT Codes to the Services They Represent

Your interest in these codes is usually related to your doctors and insurance billings .

HCPCS level II codes can be found online, but the level I codes and CPT codes are copyrighted by the AMA. The AMA charges license fees for use of CPT codes and access to the full listings, which means you won t find a comprehensive list online for free. To make them more accessible to patients, the AMA provides a means for looking up the individual CPT codes you might find on your doctor s bills or EOBs (estimates of benefits).

If you have paperwork that has a CPT or HCPCS code on it, and you want to figure out what that code represents, you can do so in a number of ways:

    • Do a CPT code search on the American Medical Association website. You will have to register (for free) and you are limited to five searches per day. This allows patients to search for a CPT code or use a keyword to see what the associated CPT code might be.
    • Contact your doctor s office and ask them to help you match CPT codes and services.
    • Contact your payer s billing personnel and ask them to help you.
    • Remember that some codes may be bundled but can be looked up in the same way.
    • HCPCS level II code lists can be found on the CMS website and by performing a web search for more user-friendly sites.

Where to Find CPT Codes in Your Medical Records and Paperwork

CPT and HCPCS codes are found and used in various paperwork and documentation as you transition through any healthcare experience. Codes can be used to determine everything from your diagnosis to the cost of your healthcare.

    • As you leave a doctor s appointment or are discharged from a hospital or other medical facility, you are given paperwork that includes a numeric summary of the services they provided to you. The five character codes are usually CPT codes or HCPCS codes (if you use Medicare). There are other codes on that paperwork, too. Some may be ICD codes. which may have numbers or letters and usually have decimal points.
    • When you receive a bill from the doctor. before or after it has been sent to your payer (insurance or Medicare), it will have a list of services. Next to each service will be a 5-digit code. That s the CPT code or HCPCS code.
    • When you receive an EOB, Explanation of Benefits. from your payer (insurance, Medicare or others), it will show how much of each service was paid for on our behalf. Like the doctor s bill, each service will be aligned with its CPT or HCPCS code.

How Providers and Insurers Use CPT and HCPCS Codes

    • CPT and HCPCS codes directly affect a provider s income. As such, they are very particular about how coding is done, and usually employ professional medical coders or coding services to ensure procedures are coded correctly.
    • Your doctor s office will usually start the coding process. If they use paper encounter forms, they will note on it which CPT codes apply to your visit. If they use an electronic medical record during your visit, it will be noted in that system.
    • After you leave the doctor s office, your records are examined by medical coders and billers to assign the correct codes. Your records then go to billing to submit a list of the services you were provided to your insurer or payer. Doctors and facilities generally use electronic means to store and transfer this information, although some may still be done by mail or fax.
    • Your health plan or payer such as Medicare then uses the codes to process the claim and determine out how much to reimburse your doctor.
    • State and federal government analysts use data from coding to track trends in medical care and to determine their budget for Medicare and Medicaid.
    • Health insurance companies and government statisticians use coding data to predict future health care costs for the patients in their systems.

    A Word From Verywell

Being an informed patient is part of ensuring you receive the best medical care. When you see something you don t understand in your medical record or bill, discuss it with your healthcare provider or insurer. You have a right to take an active role in ensuring your health care is accurately tracked.

Steps to Become a California Registered Nurse

    1. Take college prep classes in high school

    2. Choose the type of nursing school you want to attend

    3. Select a college and apply for admission

    1. Take college prep classes in high school

    • In addition to a U.S. high school education or the equivalent as described in Section 1412 of the Board’s regulations to become a registered nurse (RN), you should take the following classes in high school and you will have a head start on your nursing class prerequisites at college:
      • English – 4 years
      • Math – 3-4 years (including algebra and geometry)
      • Science – 2-4 years (including biology and chemistry; physics and computer science are recommended)
      • Social Studies – 3-4 years
      • Foreign Language – 2 years
    • Check out nursing prerequisites at colleges you are considering.
    • Individual nursing schools vary in their nursing course prerequisites. Talk to your high school guidance counselor and check out the websites of the California nursing schools you are considering.

    2. Choose the type of nursing school you want to attend

In California, there are three types of pre-licensure nursing programs, and two alternative routes to become a registered nurse:

    • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Takes 2-3 years. Offered at many community colleges. Prepares you to provide registered nursing care in numerous settings.

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Takes 4 years. Also referred to as Baccalaureate degree. Offered at many California State Universities and some private colleges. Prepares you to provide registered nursing care in numerous settings and to move to administrative and leadership positions.

  • Entry Level Masters Program in Nursing (ELM)

Designed for adults who have a baccalaureate degree in another field and wish to become registered nurses. Takes 1-2 years depending on how many nursing course prerequisites you have already completed. Graduate receives a masters degree.

Designed as a career ladder for California Licensed Vocational Nurses wishing to become registered nurses. Takes approximately 18-24 months. No degree is granted upon completion. Most other states do not recognize California’s LVN 30 Unit Option and will not issue RN licenses to these LVNs. Some LVNs prefer to complete an ADN program in order to obtain a degree and to have the flexibility to get an RN license in other states. Most ADN programs will give LVNs credit for some of the coursework they completed to become an LVN.

California law permits military corpsmen to take the national exam for RN licensure if they have completed RN level education and clinical experience.

  • 3. Select a college and apply for admission

    • Visit the websites and campuses of the colleges in the geographic areas of interest to you. You can choose from over 140 California nursing schools .
    • Find out which entry exams are required at the colleges you are considering.
    • Apply at more than one college to give yourself options. Many colleges have limited space for nursing students.

    4. Apply for financial aid

Opportunities abound for scholarships, loans, and loan forgiveness programs. Please visit the Financial Aid Information section of our website for more information.

    5. Obtain an RN license

To practice as an RN in California, you must be licensed by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). You must meet educational requirements, pass a criminal background check, and pass the national licensing examination. To apply for licensure:

    • Apply online or obtain an application packet and detailed instructions from the BRN website .
    • Send your application to the BRN at least 6-8 weeks before graduation.
    • Have your school send your transcripts to the BRN.
    • Complete a fingerprint background check .
    • Take and pass the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX). The exam is computerized and given continuously 6 days a week. (New graduates are advised to take the exam soon after graduation because research has shown that there is a higher success rate for early test takers compared with those who wait several months.)
    • Apply for an Interim Permit if you wish to work in a supervised nursing capacity while awaiting the results of your examination.
