First Step to BSN

The First Step to BSN Program helps adult students who have little or no prior college credits to progress toward earning their degrees. First Step features an 18-month rotation of online and accelerated core courses created specifically for adult students. After completing the First Step to BSN Program, students are prepared to apply to Union University’s Accelerated BSN Program, where they can earn their Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree in 15 months or the Traditional BSN Program.

Are You Eligible?

A First Step student must be a graduate of an accredited high school or have a state high school equivalency diploma and be at least 24 years of age. The following items must be submitted to be considered for admissions: application for admission, $50 application fee, official transcripts from all accredited institutions attended, high school transcript/GED if less than 24 college credit hours achieved, a personal statement describing why they desire to attend Union University, their personal career goals and reflect their interest in the field of nursing. Two letters of recommendation on provided forms are also required.

General Education Requirements for the Accelerated BSN Program

Please note: these courses are required for ALL applicants in order to be eligible for the Accelerated BSN Program.

  • General Education requirements must be completed
  • Age 24 or older
  • ACT Score of 20 or higher

The First Step to BSN Program is available on the Jackson, Germantown and Hendersonville campuses. While the application process is rolling admissions. the deadline for the fall semester is July 1st. The deadline for the spring semester is November 1st. If you are applying after these deadlines, your application may still be considered for the upcoming semester. Orientation for the First Step to BSN Program is provided prior to beginning the semester.

  1. Application: Fill out and submit the First Step to BSN Program Application (.pdf) (make sure to complete the Application, Reference Forms, Transcript Requests, Personal Statement, Standards of Admission and Community Values Statement)
  2. Read and sign the Community Values Statement and Standards of Admissions. Both signed pages must be received by the School of Nursing Admissions. (part of First Step to BSN Program Application Packet)
  3. Application Fee: The Union University application fee is $50 and is non-refundable. You have the option to pay online by credit card . You may also pay by check or money order with your supplemental application.
  4. Transcripts: Official transcripts from all accredited institutions attended, *high school transcript/GED (*if less than 24 college credit hours achieved). Please do not send transcripts for non-traditional nursing programs to Undergraduate Admissions.
  5. Reference Forms: Two reference forms are required from individuals who can attest to your academic ability and/or self-discipline to excel in the First Step to BSN program. Reference forms are a part of the First Step to BSN application.
  6. Personal Statement: Complete the personal statement found in the First Step to BSN Application. Your personal statement should be a brief description of why you desire to attend Union University, your personal career goals and reflect your interest in the field of nursing.
  7. If you are not a U.S. citizen, an international application must be completed and submitted with the BSN application. All international transcripts must be evaluated by an accredited evaluating agency found at the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services’ website: www.naces.org
  8. Applications which are incomplete by the application deadlines will be considered ineligible for admission and will not be processed.

*Please allow 2-4 weeks after application packet has been submitted to be received in the Office of Admissions and up to 2 weeks to process application. Applicant will be notified by email when application has been processed.

The RN/BS program is designed for nurses with an Associate Degree or Diploma. This 100% online program can help you succeed based on:

Role of the Preceptor for unlicensed students in the RN/BS completion program

Students who are not yet licensed as an RN must identify a preceptor who will supervise the student s direct/indirect practice experiences until the student is licensed as an RN. Students must provide the course faculty member with the name, address, credentials, and license number of the preceptor.

Criteria for the preceptor:

  • Have a current license as a registered professional nurse in the state/district where the student will engage in practice experiences
  • Have a bachelor of science (nursing) from an accredited program
  • Read the learning objectives of the practice experience
  • Engage the student in achieving the identified objectives
  • Communicate as appropriate with the LSN faculty providing oversight for the student s practice experience

NJCU also offers a part-time Master of Science in Nursing Education (MS) Degree Program as well as a Post-Master’s Certificate Program. Students can complete the 37-credit MS program in approximately two years, and may begin the program in either the spring or the fall. Guided Study Courses
Guided Study (GS) courses allow independent learning in a structured 12-week format. More than 100 Guided Study courses are currently offered to help students meet degree requirements.

Designed to be completed in a 12-week term, each Guided Study course includes a detailed week-by-week calendar or schedule that will guide you through reading and writing assignments. Courses may include textbooks, a study guide, supplemental readings, and other media. Self-assessment tests and exercises may be incorporated into the course materials, and some courses contain optional additional information and exercises, delivered in other media.

Mentors, assigned by the University, grade and comment upon written assignments and proctored examinations. Mentors are also available for consultation.

Online Courses
Online courses use the Internet to facilitate interactive distance learning. Online courses put you in contact with fellow students and mentors, allowing participation in course discussions as well as private collegial discussions.

Once you are registered for an online course, you will be given an account with which you can connect to your course at the University’s Web site at www.tesu.edu Current Students/Login to Courses or directly through the University’s MyEdison Portal at https://www2.tesu.edu/myedison/.

Login information to access courses will be sent to registered students by the start of the semester.
Students registering for online courses are expected to have experience and proficiency using a computer, browsing the Web and sending and receiving Internet mail. A valid e-mail address is required to register for an online course.
Minimum PC system requirements to access an online course are:

  • access to the Internet;
  • an Internet browser like Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer 4.x or better;

FlashTrack Courses
These courses are delivered to students on a 2 GB flash drive loaded with all course materials and software needed to prepare for the final exam. FlashTrack courses contain the same structure and functionality as an online course but enable students to work offline

BSN Online Courses
Online courses use the Internet to facilitate interactive distance learning. Online courses put you in contact with fellow students and mentors, allowing participation in public course discussions as well as private collegial discussions.

e -Pack Courses
e -Pack courses allow students to prepare for a comprehensive final examination by taking a series of chapter quizzes delivered online. This credit-earning option is perfect for self-motivated learners who want the freedom of self-paced learning within a semester time frame but would benefit from online chapter quizzes to gauge their readiness for the comprehensive examination. The quizzes break up the subject matter into manageable units and do not count toward the final grade. They also provide simple, easy-to-understand, real-time feedback on each question to which the student has responded. By using the feedback, the student will know which topics need further review. Each course is designed around a textbook, and features access to the online chapter quizzes, an opportunity to earn credit on the comprehensive examination and Web site support. There is no mentor. System requirements are: an Internet connected PC, one of the major browser programs such as Internet Explorer, and Windows 98 or higher.

Self-Directed Courses
Self-Directed online courses provide an opportunity for students to learn independently. Like our e-Pack courses, students have the freedom to move through the course independently at a pace they control. Students are given all of the tools needed to complete the course without supervision. Therefore, Self-Directed courses foster a self-reliant learning experience where students work through the content provided in the course completely autonomously.

TECEP Examinations
TECEP (Thomas Edison State University Examination Program) offers over 50 examinations that allow you to earn college credit without taking formal courses. They are specifically designed to let you demonstrate the college-level knowledge you have gained through your work, personal interests or independent studies by taking a single examination.

The tests were originally developed to help Thomas Edison State University students meet degree requirements in a flexible manner, but now are available to anyone who is interested in credit-by-examination. Students at many other colleges and universities have found wide acceptability for TECEP credit at their institutions. However, it is important to check your college’s policies if you are enrolled elsewhere.

TECEP examinations are available in a wide range of business and liberal arts subjects, such as psychology, management, English composition and marketing. Each TECEP is developed by a team of mentors who teach college courses in the subject area of the examination. Along with the exam, the team develops a test description with information to guide student test preparation efforts.

Prior Learning Assessment
Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) is a flexible, efficient way of earning college credits for college-level knowledge you have acquired in nontraditional ways outside the classroom. Thomas Edison State University has already helped thousands of adults save countless classroom hours by earning credits based on their prior knowledge and experience. Moreover, these credit awards are honored in transfer by many other colleges and universities throughout the country. The only prerequisite for PLA is the completion of English Composition 101 and 102 with a grade of C or higher.

Like all programs offered by Thomas Edison State University, Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) operates on the belief that college-level learning, no matter how it is gained, warrants consideration for credit. Therefore, nearly any area of learning can be converted into college credit as long as it is currently being taught at a regionally accredited college or university and you can demonstrate your expertise in it.

Prior Learning may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including a compilation and discussion of data assembled in an approved format to demonstrate college-level knowledge worthy of credit. Each PLA submission generally represents one course. Your PLA submission to Thomas Edison State University will serve as proof of your expertise and the value it has in the academic world. It can include knowledge or skills gained from a wide variety of sources. Here are some of the more common ones used for Prior Learning Assessment:

  • full- or part-time jobs
  • independent reading and study
  • training programs or in-service courses
  • volunteer work
  • cultural and artistic pursuits
  • hobbies and recreational pastimes
  • community or religious activities
  • military service
  • travel study
  • organization memberships

There are two methods of PLA, differing only in the initial registration process:

STANDARD PLA
Standard PLA is described in the Registration Bulletin and on the University Web site at www.tesu.edu. Students register during the monthly registration periods as they would for Guided Study, e -Pack or online courses.

INDIVIDUALIZED PLA
The individualized PLA requires more initial preparation from both the student and the University. Before registering, the student will submit the Prior Learning Assessment Proposal Form, which includes a current course description from a regionally accredited institution and a brief account of where and how the knowledge for the proposed portfolio was gained. Once the application is accepted, the student will receive clearance to register in the next available semester.

Course Description

This course is a bridge course for the RN who is returning to formal education for the baccalaureate degree in nursing. The course focuses on differentiated nursing practice competencies, nursing conceptual models, professional accountability, integrating spirituality into practice, group dynamics, and critical thinking. Emphasis is also placed on writing and oral presentation skills.

NRS-429VN: Family-Centered Health Promotion Total Credits: 3 credits

Course Description

This course focuses on family theories, health promotion models, cultural diversity, and teaching learning principles. The course emphasizes the family as the client, family FHP health assessments, screenings across the lifespan, communication, community resources, and family education. Appropriate health promotion education is evaluated against evidence-based research and practice.

NRS-434VN: Health Assessment Total Credits: 3 credits

Course Description

This course focuses on methods of health history taking, physical examination skills, documentation, and health screening. The course emphasizes the individual as the client, functional health patterns, community resources, and the teaching learning process.

NRS-427VN: Concepts in Community and Public Health Total Credits: 3 credits

Course Description

This course focuses on the community as a large system of people of varying cultures, spiritual values, geographic norms, and economic conditions, all influenced by social-legal-political variables that impact individual and community health. Particular attention is paid to vulnerable subgroups in the community. Emphasis is placed on critical analysis, using epidemiological data and functional health pattern assessments to plan and intervene in areas of health promotion and disease prevention.

HLT-362V: Applied Statistics for Health Care Professionals Total Credits: 3 credits

Course Description

This introductory course on statistical concepts emphasizes applications to health care professions. The course is designed to prepare students to interpret and evaluate statistics and statistical methods used in published research papers and to make decisions about the appropriateness of specific statistical methods in a variety of settings. Areas of emphasis include introduction to analysis of variance, regression, and graphical presentation; experimental design; descriptive statistics; sampling methods; and z, t, and chi-square.

NRS-433V: Introduction to Nursing Research Total Credits: 3 credits

Course Description

This writing intensive course promotes the use of research findings as a basis for improving clinical practice. Quantitative and qualitative research methodologies are presented. Emphasis is on the critical review of research studies and their applications to clinical practice. An overview of evidence-based practice is provided. Prerequisite: HLT-362V.

PHI-413V: Ethical and Spiritual Decision Making in Health Care Total Credits: 3 credits

Course Description

This course introduces a Christian foundation for spiritual assessment and care with specific emphasis on biomedical ethical principles and ethical decision making within nursing practice. Students practice assessment and propose holistic interventions that take into account the dignity of the human person. These assessments and interventions contribute to the physical and spiritual well-being of individuals across the life span and the health-illness continuum.

NRS-451VN: Nursing Leadership and Management Total Credits: 3 credits

Course Description

Registered nurses with current licensure have a basic understanding of the role of the professional nurse. This course emphasizes further development of the professional nurse role. This course is designed to enhance the working RN s existing understanding of the pathophysiological processes of disease as they affect clients across the lifespan. The interrelationship of structural and functional reactions of cells and tissues to genetic alterations and injurious agents provide the foundation for comprehending clinical manifestations and treatment protocols. Critical thinking and nursing management are enhanced through the use of case studies that integrate nutritional and pharmacological concepts. The understanding of environmental and biological risk factors provides the nurse with the knowledge to provide health promotion and prevention education.

NRS-440VN: Trends and Issues in Today s Health Care Total Credits: 3 credits

Course Description

This course explores the impact of numerous professional and societal forces on health care policy and practice. Content includes an analysis of current studies; nursing care policy and position statements; political, environmental, and cultural issues; and changing nursing roles. The study of these issues examines the impact on health care delivery systems in today s society.

NRS-490: Professional Capstone and Practicum Total Credits: 6 credits

Course Description

This is a writing intensive course. The professional capstone practicum project offers students the opportunity to propose a resolution to an issue or problem significant to nursing practice within a clinical environment. Students identify, design, and propose an evidence-based solution within a health care organization with guidance from faculty and a preceptor in the field. The proposal must reflect synthesis and integration of course content and professional practice. Development of the capstone project is guided by the baccalaureate program student learning outcomes. Practice immersion hours: 100. Prerequisites: NRS-430V, NRS-429VN, NRS-434VN, NRS-427VN, NRS-433V, PHI-413V, NRS-451VN, NRS-410V, and NRS-440VN.

RN/BSN Program

Registered nurses wishing to pursue a baccalaureate degree in nursing may complete the nursing component within 12 months at William Carey University. In order to meet the needs of the working registered nurse, courses are offered in an online format requiring three on-campus Saturday class meetings per term. The program consists of 66 hours of prerequisite courses and 30 hours of upper division course work. The student will be awarded 24 hours of credit applicable toward the degree requirements for current RN licensure.

Requirements for admission to the RN-BSN Program

  • Complete application for admission to William Carey University
  • Complete application for WCU School of Nursing
  • Graduation from a nationally accredited associate degree or diploma nursing program
  • Unencumbered licensure as a registered nurse
  • Cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on all courses taken toward meeting the nursing degree requirements

Progression Policy

  • Complete all nursing courses with a grade of C or better
  • Two failing grades in a course or failing two clinical courses renders the student ineligible to continue in nursing
  • Successful completion of the prerequisite courses with a C or better
  • Successful completion of the CPE or BUS 102 or its equivalent
  • Successful completion of the Computer Proficiency Examination

Graduation Policy

  • Complete at least 30 hours of credit at William Carey University
  • Complete the last 30 hours at William Carey University
  • Fulfill all requirements of the University for graduation
  • Complete all nursing courses with a C or better
  • Be recommended for graduation by the dean and faculty

These courses do not have to be completed prior to starting nursing courses. The only prerequisite required is that statistics must be completed before taking NUR 460 Evidence-Based Practice for RNs.
