Paying off a Debt Early Won t Help Credit Scores

Dear JNS,

Your friend was correct that in order to establish a credit history she must first have a credit account opened in her name.

While paying the loan off early may save her some interest fees, it is better for her credit history to leave it open until she has been approved for other credit accounts. Open and active accounts are scored more highly than closed accounts because they demonstrate that you are managing credit well now and not just in the past.

However, it can still be a positive start to her credit history, even if closed. The important thing is that all payments were made on time. She also should review her contract carefully to ensure there is no early repayment penalty. Such a penalty will not affect her credit history, but could result in additional expense.

With an established credit history, she may be able to qualify for a credit card. If so, she should give serious consideration to getting one. A credit card will help her build a strong credit history and credit scores more quickly.

Unlike an installment loan that sets a specific payment amount each month, a credit card allows the holder to decide how much they want to charge and how much they want to pay each month.

Because the holder makes these decisions, credit card use provides much greater insight into how the individual will manage other accounts. As a result, credit cards play an important role in establishing strong credit scores.

Thanks for asking.

The Truth About Repairing Bad Credit

Don’t trust anyone who tells you there is a quick fix for repairing your credit. Bad credit is a burden that can last years on your credit report, and may take a toll on your personal and professional life. Using credit cards responsibly and making on-time payments over a number of years and keeping account balances low relative to the credit limit helps building good credit history.

If you are thinking of applying for a credit card, choose the right card. A good option for consumers with bad credit is a secured credit card. Secured credit cards report your credit performance to consumer reporting agencies. So, if you are on time with all payments and do not go over the limit, you will likely be able to raise your credit score. Don’t believe those who claim prepaid cards can do the same for you. Prepaid cards do not send reports to the agencies, and as a result there’s no improvement for your credit history. However, they are good for establishing the habit of making payments regularly. They prepare you to have a regular credit card.

Living With Bad Credit

  1. Although, for most credit cards designed for people with bad credit, interest rates are much higher than for any other credit card, paying off full balance at the end of each month will avoid interest.
  2. Secured Cards allow you to start a credit history. If you never miss payments and are careful with your spending, many banks will graduate you to an unsecured credit line, and will sometimes refund your deposit.
  3. Don’t believe fast fixes to bad credit. It takes time and dedication on your part. A negative report can last from 7 to 10 years, but this too shall pass, so start your good credit today, for better tomorrow.

FICO Credit Scores

A credit score is a number generally between 300-850, based on a statistical analysis of a person’s credit files. This score represents the credit worthiness of a person. A credit score is assigned to each individual, to rate how risky a borrower he or she is–the higher the score, the less risk the individual poses to creditors. In most cases, your credit score will determine whether you will be approved for a credit card.

Credit Score Facts

  1. Credit Scores range from 300-850, the higher the better.
  2. Most lenders base approval on your credit score.
  3. Higher Scores mean lower payments and better deals.
  4. Higher Scores mean Lower interest rates.
  5. Scores are determined by 5 main categories:
    • Payment History
    • Amounts Owed
    • Length of Credit History
    • Type of Credit Used
    • New Credit

Note: Credit scores are used to represent the creditworthiness of a person and may be one indicator to the credit type you are eligible for. However, credit score alone does not guarantee or imply approval for any credit card product.

How to Consolidate Credit Cards #home #loans #rates

Other People Are Reading

Transfer Balances

Open a new credit card account to use specifically for transferring the outstanding balances on your open credit card accounts. You ll need the name, account number and outstanding balance of each open card you want to include. According to NerdWallet, a personal finance website, most credit card companies require a credit score of at least 690 to qualify. Identify cards that offer an interest-free introductory period. Next, review and compare their add-on fees such as annual fees and balance transfer fees — usually 3 to 4 percent of the amount of the transferred balance. Finally, compare the interest rates for each card once the interest-free period expires

Take Out a Debt Consolidation Loan

Apply for a debt consolidation loan through your bank or credit union. If you qualify, most lenders will pay each credit card company directly. If you don t qualify and you have sufficient equity or collateral, apply for a home equity or secured personal loan and pay credit card balances yourself. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends that you make sure a debt consolidation loan is a good choice before committing. You don’t want to spend more on fees or interest for the consolidation loan than you do on your individual credit cards. Use an online loan consolidation calculator or add up the monthly payments, including fees and interest, and compare these with the consolidation loan.

Work With a Credit Counselor

A credit counseling service is a way to consolidate credit card debt without opening a new card or taking out a loan. With this option, a representative from the service negotiates with credit card companies on your behalf to reduce interest rates and lower monthly payments. Each month, you send in a single payment that covers all your credit cards and the company pays your creditors. Using a credit counseling service will not affect your credit score as long as you pay all of the amounts in full. However, it is vital to choose a reputable company. To assist you, the U.S. Department of Justice website has a list of approved counseling services and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has a list of questions to ask each service before you decide.

Consolidation Considerations

It takes self-discipline and clear goals to make sure credit card consolidation is the best long-term choice. While the goal is to decrease the total percentage of your credit card balances to your available credit card limits, you can easily find yourself in more financial trouble if you consolidate and then continue using newly cleared cards. Cancelling cleared credit cards immediately after consolidating is another common mistake. According to MyFICO, owing the same total balance but having fewer open accounts can lower your credit score. Keep your other accounts open but resist the urge to make purchases with them.

Credit Cards For Bad Credit Poor Credit

These credit cards are specifically for people that have bad credit or poor credit. While these credit cards won t contain low interest rates, rewards programs, or other premium benefits that come with other cards, they will help those with bad credit and poor credit get a credit card. These cards are accepted anywhere a normal credit card is accepted and many of these cards now feature low or no fees.

Each card below contains our editor’s rating and objective opinion. Most of the credit card offers shown below are from our advertising partners, however LowCards editors have reviewed each of the features and benefits of the cards below and sorted them in order of our editor’s opinion:

The main pros of these credit cards is that they are specifically designed for individuals with bad credit. That means the card features, benefits, and structure are put in place to help those who have low credit scores, typically between 350 and 640. These cards are much safer to use than cash and will allow you to keep better track of your purchases. They can be used anywhere credit cards are accepted. Lastly, many of these cards now have no monthly fees associated with them.

There are cons to cards for those with bad credit. First of all, these cards won t have all the bells and whistles of those with annual fees and those designed for people with excellent credit. Secondly many of these cards won t have any sort of rewards program or introductory offer. And lastly, there sometimes will be a one-time setup or funding fee for certain cards. Be sure to read the full terms and conditions of the card you decide on to make sure it s a good fit for your financial situation.

These cards are specifically designed for those with a FICO score between 350 and 640. If your score is above 640, we highly recommend looking at cards designed for fair. good. or excellent credit as those cards will have more benefits to reward your higher score.

If your score is between 350 and 640, then you are classified by the credit card industry as having bad credit. However this doesn t mean you can t get a credit card. We have over a dozen cards listed below that are specifically designed for your situation and have financial tools to help you use your card responsibly and some cards will even report to the credit bureaus to help you rebuild your credit score.

Each card below contains our editor’s rating and objective opinion. Most of the credit card offers shown below are from our advertising partners, however LowCards editors have reviewed each of the features and benefits of the cards below and sorted them in order of our editor’s opinion:

Prepaid cards are similar to debit cards or gift cards in that you load them with an amount of money and then have that money available to be used on the card. When you run out of money you simply reload the card.

Secured cards are more similar to credit cards, however you are required to provide an initial deposit that the card issuer keeps as long as you have the card then you are issued credit in the amount of the deposit or higher. These cards typically report to the credit bureaus and act more like a traditional credit card.

If you re unhappy with your credit profile, then rebuilding your credit will be a priority for you. Select a credit card that reports to the major bureaus and make it a habit of using your card each month and paying in full, on time. This will help slowly raise your credit over time.

Additionally, if you have a large amount of debt and bad credit, you may want to speak with a professional about the options available to you to help you climb out of debt and get back on the road to improving your credit score. As your credit score rises, you will open the door to additional credit card opportunities that will come with more features and perks than a card designed specifically for bad credit.

0% APR Credit Cards

What are 0% APR credit cards?

Do you want a card that can save you some major cash on finance charges? These 0% APR cards from our partners offer no interest charges during an introductory period, allowing you to lower your monthly debt obligation.

Use a balance transfer to consolidate all of your credit card debt onto one low-rate card or to spread out your payments on a large purchase. Browse and compare our extensive list of 0% APR credit cards to find one that suits your needs.

How does the 0% offer work?

These cards offer a zero interest rate introductory period that can range from six to 18 months, occasionally longer. When the intro period is over, the rate rises to a standard APR.

What are some pros and cons?

In addition to the 0% APR introductory period, some cards offer rewards like cash back or airline miles. But on the downside, it’s typically more difficult to qualify for one of these cards.

These cards are typically designed for and offered to those with good to excellent credit. If your credit is in poor standing, you may have trouble qualifying.

Tips on 0% APR cards

Keep in mind that the introductory period offered with these cards is a temporary promotional period. Once the period is up, the rate resets to a standard APR, and you could potentially be charged a significantly higher interest rate on your balance. It’s best to pay off your balance in full before the promotional period is up.

In addition, it’s important to compare 0% APR cards thoroughly. Some of the best cards offer a long introductory period, a low post-intro rate, and no annual fee.

Unsecured Credit Cards from Our Partners

Editors Rating: 4.5 /5

Unsecured credit cards are credit cards for people with poor credit, but good enough to still be eligible for limited unsecured credit lines.

Most of the bad, poor or damaged-credit credit cards you see advertised are unsecured credit cards. If you have good credit, you most likely qualify for a card with no fees and a reasonable interest rate. If you have bad or limited credit, though, you may need to consider an unsecured credit card for 2015.

What is an Unsecured Credit Card?

An unsecured credit card is a credit card offered by a bank where you are deemed a credit risk, and yet they assume the risk of lending you up to a certain amount of money–your credit limit–without any collateral or security. They are betting that you will pay your balance or a portion of your balance on time each month and not default. If you default on your credit card debt, they lose.

However, for you an unsecured card could be risky business. The interest rates on unsecured credit cards vary depending on how likely it is the bank thinks the cardholder will default. The less risk you are to the bank, the lower the credit card interest rate or APR you’ll receive.

Unsecured Credit Cards can be a Fee fiesta

Unsecured credit cards for consumers who are considered high risk–those who have bad or limited credit, or have previously filed for bankruptcy, for example–usually carry a high APR, sometimes approaching 60 percent. And there are many fees for using the card. Here are some of the fees you can expect to pay for an unsecured credit card:

  • Annual fee up to $59
  • Account processing fee (to open the account) up to $39
  • Monthly servicing fee that can amount to $75 a year
  • Additional card fee up to $29
  • Credit limit increase fee up to 25 percent of the amount of the increase (e.g. a $100 increase would incur a $25 fee)

Most of the unsecured credit cards for poor credit cardholders also have low credit limits to start with, usually $300. Adding up the initial fees, a new cardholder could find that they begin with a balance of $105, and the interest rate they’ll be charged on that balance could be nearly 60 percent. Because most of these cards have no grace period, it means you will be paying interest on the balance from the moment the charges are made.

What’s the upside of an unsecured credit card?

The only upside to these unsecured cards for high-risk consumers is that the credit card use is reported to the credit reporting bureaus–Equifax, Experian and TransUnion–and will help you build a credit history if you are willing to be vigilant about paying the balance on time and in full every month.

A secured card can be a better choice

The more cost-effective way to build a credit history is with a secured credit card. Yes, you will need to have at least $300 to deposit with a bank to secure the card. But the fees are not nearly so onerous and the APR won’t be either. The added advantage is that if you pay your credit card bill on time every month and don’t max out your credit limit–in other words, use the card responsibly–the credit card issuer may raise your credit limit without charging you a fee.

After a year of responsible use, the issuer may convert your secured card to an unsecured card that doesn’t carry all of the fees and high APR. Before you apply for a secured card, however, be sure the issuer reports it to at least one of the credit bureaus or your goal of establishing a credit history will not be achieved.

Read the fine print on unsecured credit cards

Regardless of which type of credit card for bad credit customers you choose, be sure to read the fine print in the Terms and Conditions section of the credit card application before you apply for that credit card offer. You need to understand what actions on your part–making a late payment, exceeding your credit limit–will trigger additional fees or, worse, an increase in the APR.

Bad Credit Cards

Escaping the Catch-22 of Bad Credit!

Bad credit cards have given a number of people a bit of hope. For years, those who had bad credit felt like there was no way out for them. They were stuck in the proverbial catch-22 they couldn t reestablish good credit without a credit card or loan, but they couldn t get a credit card or loan if they didn t have good credit.

In recent years, however, more cards have become available to those who have poor credit histories. Cards designed for people to rebuild good credit come withmany of the same benefits that standard cards come with. Several even offer rewards programs that allow people to gain points for travel or receive discounts at certain restaurants and hotels throughout the country. A lot of cards come with low APRs, and some do not even have an annual fee. It is not likely that someone with bad credit will receive a high spending limit, but if payments are made consistently, credit limits can be raised.

Specifics of Bad Credit Cards

Applications for most credit cards take into account a person s payment history. Often, if there is even the slightest hint of late payments, a person s application will be rejected. Cards that cater to those with bad credit are more lenient on this matter. If a person has struggled in the past he could still very well be approved. However, that does not mean that anyone who applies will receive a card. There are a few cards on the market that do not take into account a person s salary. While this is most beneficial for students looking to establish credit, it can also be a benefit for people who have had trouble securing other cards.

Like with all credit cards, there is an amount of risk involved in taking on a card for bad credit. In fact, it can be even more detrimental to get behind on payments, because a bad credit card is truly the last resort. If a person struggles to keep up with bills it can become virtually impossible to get approved for another card in the future.

And if I manage a bad credit card well?

For consumers who handle their bad credit cards with prudence, it becomes easier to build better credit. In this way, one of these bad credit cards can help people to redeem themselves financially. We have all had periods in which our circumstances have overtaken us, leading to dire financial straits. Building credit back up to a respectable level doesn t have to be impossible, given some of today s tools, such as the bad credit card.

The Best Credit Cards for Bad Credit, August 2015

For consumers with a poor credit history, the options for new lines of credit are limited. Far too often, lenders take advantage of people with poor credit by charging high interest rates and fees. Rather than improve their credit, the added debt only makes things worse. The world can be a much uglier place when your credit score is below 650. Before signing up for a new credit card, someone with bad credit should determine the cause of the low score. If it s related to uncontrollable spending, this is the problem that should be solved before looking for new credit.

Many people with bad credit are interested in improving their credit score, and responsible use of credit is the perfect way to do this. Some credit card issuers offer products designed specifically for people with bad credit. Even though the terms may not be as favorable as other mainstream cards, these can be good instruments for proving to the financial industry one can now handle a credit card without creating more problems. The best credit cards for poor credit generally lack rewards and perks, but the cards you ll find below do offer consumers a line of credit with reasonable interest rates and low fees. If you own a card designed for consumers with bad credit and you love it, let me know and I ll add it to the list.

The cards on this list report your credit information to all three major credit bureaus, which will help improve your credit score if the behavior is positive.

Credit Cards For People With Bad Credit

Consumers with poor credit scores were once locked out of the credit card game. But lenders are beginning to court those whose low scores once typed them as too risky to be offered a credit card.

In the first quarter of 2014, 3.7 million subprime borrowers – those with a FICO credit score below 660 – were issued credit cards, according to Equifax, Inc. That’s a 39% jump from 2013 and the highest level since 2008, according to Equifax data provided to the Wall Street Journal.

Federal regulations tying the hands of card issuers wanting to raise interest rates on existing balances have convinced banks and other credit card issuers to do business with consumers who otherwise might not be offered a card.

That’s good news for consumers with poor credit scores who hope to rebuild their credit with the help of subprime credit cards.

Not surprisingly, the cards offered to those with less-than-stellar FICO scores are accompanied by an array of less-than-stellar fees and interest rates – far removed from the attractive incentives typically offered with prime credit cards. Other than a prepaid card. which doesn’t offer any credit and works like a gift card, people with poor credit have two basic choices.

Subprime Credit Cards

Like prime cards, subprime credit cards don’t require borrowers to deposit money with the bank before they use them. That’s where the resemblance stops. Subprime borrowers can expect to pay maximum interest rates, higher fees and possibly an annual fee, says Igor Tselenchuk, a personal finance and credit card expert in San Francisco. Rates for new purchases can go even higher if you are late with a payment or skip one altogether.

To reduce their financial exposure in the event a consumer defaults, credit limits are often initially set low on subprime credit cards. And very few subprime credit cards offer rewards incentives and perks. Those that do often package those rewards with steep interest rates and fees. For instance: Credit One Bank Credit Card with Gas Rewards card offers 1% back on all gas purchases and there’s no limit to the gas rewards you can earn. However, there’s an annual fee of $35 to $99 and a variable ongoing interest rate of 17.9% to 23.9%.

Interest rates can go much higher. The First Premier Bank credit card has a whopping 36% interest rate for purchases and cash advances. There’s also a one-time processing fee of $75 and an annual fee of $75 the first year, $45 for additional years. On top of that, cardholders are charged a servicing fee of $6.25 per month after the first year. Some of these fees are charged before you ever use your card and will reduce the amount of credit you initially have available. For example, if your initial credit limit is $300, your initial available credit will be only about $225.

“That’s why it is extremely important to read the fine print, understand the fee schedule and pay off the balance of the subprime credit card on time every month,” says Tselenchuk.

Secured Credit Cards

If you have unsuccessfully applied for a traditional prime credit card (one offered to those with a FICO score in the 700’s and up) or are only receiving offers for subprime credit cards with exorbitant interest rates and fee structures, your only alternative might be a secured credit card, says Kari Luckett, content strategist for CompareCards.com.

Secured credit cards are typically accepted at the same places as a traditional VISA or other type of credit card. However, instead of carrying an unsecured credit limit, your line of credit is determined by the size of your security deposit. This money stays put; it isn’t used to make monthly payments.

Luckett says secured cards typically cost a little more in fees and interest than an unsecured card due to the risk of lending to consumers with either poor or no credit history. “Many of them will come with an annual fee, application fees and monthly fees in addition to the security deposit required in order to open the account.”

And they rarely come with perks like airline miles, hotel or other shopping rewards or cash back.

The typical interest rate for a secured credit card ranges from about 11% to 28%.

“Secured cards from credit unions are the exception to this rule where one could easily expect an interest rate of about 9.9% like with the USAA Secured Platinum American Express Card,” says Luckett. “On the flip side, Capital One Secured MasterCard carries one of the highest interest rates of all secured credit cards at 22.9% interest.” To learn more about this option, read Secured Credit Cards .

The Bottom Line

Even though they typically come with high interest rates and fees, subprime and secured credit cards can help consumers rebuild their credit score. If you can spare the cash, a secured card is generally the preferable option because the costs are likely to be lower.

No matter which type of card you carry, the best way to put it to work for your credit score is by making all payments on time and not using more than 30% of your credit limit. That means – if your credit line is $300 – never carrying a balance (including any fees and interest) of more than $100. One more tip: Before you sign up, do some online research on the company you’re considering to see whether there are fraud or other complaints against it. If you have a problem with a company after you’ve signed on, here’s how to file a complaint .

Motorcycle Loans

Overview

Motorcycle loans are similar to other loans that are available for automobiles. Motorcycle loans are designed for persons who want to purchase a new, used, or custom bike or refinance an existing motorcycle loan. Motorcycle loans depend on the actual cost of the specific motorcycle. Motorcycle loans are more expensive than auto loans. It is always important that you choose the motorcycle based on how much you can pay. Before taking a motorcycle loan, you must decide on the motorcycle that you are planning to purchase. This will give you an idea of which motorcycle you can afford to buy.

How It Works

You can approach your bank for motorcycle loans. You can also check out the deals available on the Internet and fill in the application online. You must be above 18 years of age, if you want to go in for a motorcycle loan. You ought to provide your personal and business information to the financial institution that is financing your loan. There are various aspects you need to consider before you apply for a loan. You should look into the down payment, interest rates, and amount of monthly payments. Usually the term of a motorcycle loan is 12 to 36 months. You can even extend it to 72 months if the size of your motorcycle loan is large. Once your online application is approved, it becomes very easy for you to get your loan.

Benefits

You can buy a brand new motorcycle of your choice, with the help of a motorcycle loan. The process of getting loan approval is very simple and you may not have to pay a down payment. There are no hidden costs or penalties when you are paying your motorcycle loans.

Cost/Pricing

Motorcycle loans usually have high interest rates, so better check the total amount of your loan. Your monthly payments will depend on your loan amount and interest rate. Before you apply for a motorcycle loan, surf the Internet for deals offered by various companies. You can compare the interest rates and go for the best offer.

Timing

You can go in for a motorcycle loan when you want to buy a new motorcycle or when you are looking to refinance an existing loan.

Companies/Industries

You can get a motorcycle loan from your local motorcycle dealer. You can also approach your bank for a loan. If your credit history is good, you can also borrow from your credit card. Some of the companies that offer motorcycle loans are Citibank, GMAC, Washington Mutual, and HSBC.

Payday Loans

Overview

Payday loans are small, short-term loans that require repayment at high interest rates. They are also referred to as paycheck advances or cash advance loans.

Generally, these types of loans are available for people who do not qualify for traditional bank loans and who cannot extend their credit limits.

For the most, you should avoid a payday loan if you can. The interest rates for these types of loans are extremely high, and can even double the initial amount borrowed if you cannot repay your debt on time. In any case, you might need a payday loan if you are experiencing a temporary and short-term financial setback.

Most payday agencies require borrowers to repay their loans with their next paychecks. In some situations, you might be able to set up a plan to pay back the borrowed amount over a period of several months.

Because interest rates are high and loan amounts are small, payday loans are relatively easy to obtain. Even if you have bad credit, you can still apply for a payday loan to help make ends meet. Some lenders do not even require borrowers to have a job.

Payday centers are located throughout the United States. If you are located in a rural or remote area, you can even apply for a payday loan online.

How It Works

Cash advances are short-term loans that can help you meet your basic living expenses until you receive your next paycheck. In general, payday loans are not available for amounts exceeding $1,000, and the borrowed funds will be subject to an extremely high interest rate. You will know this interest rate ahead of time, and you will be able to negotiate your repayment terms accordingly. For the most part, payday loans need to be repaid as soon as you receive your next paycheck. Sometimes, you can repay your payday loans within one month.

In most situations, lenders will require borrowers to prove some sort of income. Even if you have a bad credit history, you can still apply for a loan. Even if you do not have a job, you can probably still apply for a payday loan; however, you might need to repay your debt at an even higher interest rate.

Once you have settled on a payday loan company, fill in the application form with the necessary details. If you personally apply, you will be asked to write a postdated check for the lender.

Many online payday loan companies will automatically deduct the payment from your checking account. Once your application is submitted and approved, you will receive a cash advance or a check advance. Your repayment becomes due on your next payday, which is generally not more than two weeks.

Benefits

Any form of income will secure a payday loan. After you are approved, the lending agency will release funds within 24 hours of the loan application. Quick access to cash will help you settle some of your short term and temporary financial difficulty.

You can apply for a loan in person, over the Internet, or by telephone. The application process will take you 20 minutes at most since paperwork is kept to a minimum. No matter what method you choose for your application, your financial information will always be kept private.

Cost/Pricing

You pay a high price for the convenience. A payday loan is termed as “costly cash” by the Federal Trade Commission in the United States. You may pay interest as high as 30 percent on a two week loan. Payday loan lenders charge process fees and interest just like any loan company. Some lending companies might require non-sufficient funds checks and a minimum of $100 in the borrower’s checking account.

Timing

Because they are so costly, payday loans are a last resort. You should make every effort to ensure that you have exhausted all possible options. Sometimes, paying a late fee, missing a payment, or negotiating with a creditor is worth it because payday loans are so costly.

Payday loans are not permanent solutions to financial problems. Instead, cash advances should be considered a quick fix. You should not take regular payday loans. They are very expensive and could ultimately cause you to waste your money. It is recommended that you avoid payday loans unless you are experiencing a genuine emergency.

How much do Credit Collection Agencies actually buy debts for? 17th Mar 08 at 2:00 PM

I’m sure this question has been asked a lot but I’m new on the board and can’t find any info on it.

Does anyone know what persentage of the original amount credit collection agencies usually pay when they buy your debt? I believe in the U.S. it’s as little as between 1% and 5%.

This info would be really useful when considering what is feasable to offer in full and final settlement.

Glad you like it!

I would start with a 30 offer.

I had a 1200 debt with Citicards many, many years ago. It was sold on to 1sr Credit and I made a F+F settlement payment of around 400 (can’t remember the exact amount) to the DCA.

anyway, roll on 3 years or so and I decided to claim back the charges. It was less than 200 all in but citicards are very dogged in this area and fight everyone individually – the only people who are it seems. Anyway, I had to go to court 3 times and on the second time it was revealed the DCA had paid 180 for the 1200 debt.

Of course, now I’d go down the CCA route, but it wasn’t something I knew about back then.

And yes, I got the charges back – eventually – the judge got so. ed off with them, he struck out their defence and made them pay the money into court. The court then passed it to me

I have seen mentioned on another forum that its between 10 and 30 , depending on the age of the debt, amount, the risk and whether its statute barred. People like Lowells tend to buy statute barred quite cheaply from what I can gather. The above figure seems to come from people who say they are working within DCA industry. Not sure how reliable the info is, or if its any help!

    Featured Cards

If your credit is less than perfect, you may have trouble qualifying for new credit. Meanwhile, it can be difficult to improve your credit history if you’re not actively trying.

Credit cards for bad credit, help you work on rebuilding your credit history and improving your credit score over time. The best credit cards for bad credit come in two different varieties: secured and unsecured. Secured cards require you to put down a cash deposit that you can borrow against, whereas unsecured cards do not. Both types of cards have certain limitations, but either can put you on the path toward an overall improvement in your credit score.

If you can, I highly recommend getting an unsecured card, like the Credit One® Unsecured Visa® Card .

    Highlights:

There are three main reasons why I recommend this card for people with subpar credit:

    1. Since it isn’t a secured credit card, you won’t have to put down a deposit.
    2. You have the ability to earn rewards for gas purchases many secured cards don t offer any rewards at all.
    3. After making several payments on time, you may be able to secure a credit line increase.

Another excellent option for those trying to build their credit is the Total VISA Credit Card issued by Mid America Bank Trust Company pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc. Mid America Bank Trust Company; Member FDIC. Although it doesn’t offer a rewards program, it does offer fast or instant approval in certain cases, which is an excellent perk for anyone needing a card that reports to the major bureaus.

Another unsecured card for bad credit that should be at the top of anyone’s list is the Milestone® Gold MasterCard®. Not only does this card offer a quick pre-qualification process that won’t result in a hard inquiry on your credit report, but it also offers custom design options and easy online account access. Adding to the card’s value is the fact that past bankruptcies on your report are usually okay, provided you are using credit responsibly today.

    Your Credit Connection

    Bad Credit Credit Cards

If you are having difficulty obtaining a credit card due to a poor credit history, or even very bad credit, there are still a variety of options on offer. Many companies specialise in credit cards for people in this situation.

Although the interest payable on these may be higher than with other credit cards, once you have been successfully accepted for a credit card, it could help you to rebuild your credit rating so that you can obtain credit more easily in the future.

Initially you may be given a low credit limit, but if you consistently make the required repayments on time, your credit limit will gradually be increased.

As well as higher interest credit cards there are a variety of other cards available to people with bad credit history, as follows:

    Secured credit cards

To take out a secured credit card you will need to make a deposit payment. This is to protect the credit card company if you default on your payments. It is important to remember that the deposit payment cannot be used in lieu of a monthly payment, and you will still have to maintain regular monthly payments at the required amount.

    • Positives: the same as for high-interest, low-limit credit cards. Bad credit history can also be dispelled as you can rebuild your credit rating with a real credit card that offers classic credit-card convenience.
    • Negatives: the same as for high-interest, low-limit credit cards, plus the security deposit. You have to remember that the deposit is just a deposit, not an advance payment. If you miss a payment, the consequences are the same as with any other card. In addition, you need to have the money for the security deposit to apply for a secured credit card in the first place.

    Credit cards with guarantor

Some companies may ask for a guarantor when you apply for a credit card if you have a poor credit rating or no credit rating, for example, if you haven’t previously applied for credit. The guarantor will usually be someone who has an above average credit rating. However, two important factors to consider are:

    1. If you default on your credit card payments, the guarantor’s credit rating could be affected as well as your own.
    2. The guarantor may be asked to repay the debt if you are unable to meet monthly payments.

    Department store credit cards

Department store groups issue this type of card to be used when making purchases at certain specified stores. Interest rates are usually high on store cards, but they can be easier to obtain than lower interest rate credit cards. Stores often give discounts to their cardholders or operate a points system, whereby the cardholder can exchange the points for discounts against future purchases.

    Charge cards

With a charge card you have to make payment in full each time you receive an account statement. However, companies offer reward systems with this type of card, such as discounts, cash back schemes, reward points and free services.

    Types Of Cards

Variable rate APR credit cards – If you opt for a credit card with a variable interest rate, the APR is dependent on an established rate like the prime interest rate, for instance. When using this category of credit cards, be mindful that any fluctuations in the prime interest rate have a direct impact on the APR.

Fixed rate APR credit cards – With these cards, the APR maintains a level of stability till the time you own the card. Chances are remote that your card provider will increase the rate, but even if they do, they are required by Federal law to inform you of the change before it is implemented.

Do bear in mind that the rate of interest levied on your card is considered to be the decisive factor in most cases. This is because it acts as a determinant of the applicable charges if you choose to roll over or borrow the balance and pay it off in monthly installments rather than making immediate or lump-sum payments.

If you need any help comparison shopping, read our frequently asked questions below:

What is a balance transfer credit card?

Balance transfer credit cards are credit cards that come with extremely low interest rate offers (sometimes as low as 0%) to entice people with credit card debt to transfer their balances from one card to another. These offers are usually only available for a limited period of time (e.g. 180 days, 10 months, 1 year, etc.) and are designed to bring in new customers who will hopefully keep the card even after the promotional period expires.

Why should I get a balance transfer credit card?

Balance transfer credit cards can be a great tool for paying down credit card debt on one card by transferring the balance to another card with a lower interest rate. If you plan on aggressively paying down your credit card debt during the low interest promotional period, a balance transfer credit card could potentially save you hundreds of dollars in interest, help you reduce your debt and boost your financial wellbeing.

What should I consider before getting a balance transfer credit card?

When used responsibly, a balance transfer credit card can save you money and help get you out of consumer debt sooner. Before transferring your debt from one card to another, though, you should consider the applicable balance transfer fees, interest rates for new purchases on the card and the standard interest rate when the promotional period ends.

Credit card issuers usually charge a balance transfer fee, which can range from 1.00-5.00% of the amount you transfer over (e.g. if you are transferring a balance of $10,000 and the transfer fee is 3%, you’ll be charged $300 for the switch). Depending on the interest rate being offered with the new card, the balance transfer fee may not be worth the move.

Interest rates can also end up costing you more in the long run, if you haven’t paid off your debt by the end of the promotional period, or if you’ve missed any payments when the promotional period ends and the standard interest rate applies.

A final factor to consider is that if you use your balance transfer credit card for new purchases before you pay off the original amount you transferred over, you’ll be charged the standard interest rate (which is often 19.99% or more) and any payments you make will be applied to the balance transfer amount first; that means you’ll continue to accrue interest on any purchases you make on the card, after conducting the balance transfer, until the amount you originally transferred is 100% paid off.

7 ways to get the most from rewards credit cards

    By Amy E. Buttell

With all credit card rewards programs available, the issue is not whether you should get a rewards card, but what type of rewards card is best for you. But it’s a confusing marketplace, with cards touting cash back, points or miles and other incentives to get your business. To top it off, you’ve got to consider basic factors such as annual fees, interest rates and other terms.

“When considering a rewards card, the most important issue is to put some thought into it,” says Scott Crawford, co-founder and vice president of product and marketing at Ascend Consumer Finance. “You can look at something online or get an application in the mail that seems like the best thing ever, but if it doesn’t fit what you’re interested in, then it just won’t work for you. Like if you have an airline miles card, but if you don’t fly much, that isn’t a really good deal.”

    Back-to-School Guide 2016

Similarly, if you have a card that rewards you points for your purchases, but you don’t remember to redeem them, the rewards program isn’t worth much.

So here are the seven tips you need to keep in mind when adding a rewards card to your wallet:

    1. Align rewards with your interests. Reward card programs come in many different forms — generally allowing you to accumulate points toward merchandise, gift cards, travel miles or points or cash back — so it makes sense to align rewards with your interests and goals. If you’re hunkering down and trying to budget your income better, you might choose a card that offers cash back toward such basics as shopping at your favorite grocery store or filling your gas tank. If traveling is your thing, an airline miles reward card for an airline that flies out of your local hub may do the trick.

Just don’t pick a rewards program that you aren’t likely to use. Also be wary of rewards that end up enticing you to spend more money — such as those that you require you to meet a certain spending requirement within a specified time period — because you very well may end up spending more money than you otherwise would have.

    2. Cash back is king. Cash-back rewards cards give you the most basic currency available — cash — to spend as you like. According to a 2015 CreditCards.com survey. cash-back rewards are nearly three times more popular than airline rewards or hotel rewards programs. The cash can be applied toward your balance or can be redeemed for purchases, or can even be mailed to you by check. says Roger Brooks, senior vice president of business development at ZipLine Payments.

    3. Compare the reward offer with others. A major mistake many consumers make is to add a credit card to their wallet on impulse, says Crawford. “I used to work in credit card marketing, and it’s amazing how little thought people put into getting a credit card offer. I would say that most credit card decisions tend to be made on impulse.”

What constitutes a Valid Credit Card Number?

A valid credit card number (also known as Primary Account Number – PAN) has several fields and each of them has a meaning. For the technically inclined, this number complies to the ISO/IEC 7812 numbering standard. An contains a six-digit issuer identification number (IIN), an individual account identification number, and a single digit checksum.

The first digit of the issuer identification number is the major industry identifier (MII). It identifies the industry where the card will be most used in. If this digit is 9 the next three digits are the country code from ISO 3166-1.

The issuer identification number also known as the bank identification number (BIN) is the first six digits of the credit card number. These identify the institution that issued the credit card to the card holder. Here’s a list of known IIN prefixes .

Afterwards comes the account number, digit 7 to last minus one. The maximum length of the account number is 12 digits. This is an individual account identifier.

The last digit is the checksum which we explained how to calculate using the MOD 10 algorithm. It is used to validate the primary account number to protect against accidental errors.

What do we mean by Valid Credit Card Numbers?

The credit card numbers you generate on this page are completely random. When we say they are valid, we merely imply that they are a possible combination of characters which will validate when passed through the MOD 10 algorithm. You can also generate valid credit card numbers for specific Issuing Networks by utilising their particular prefixes. However, we do not provide you (obviously) with the correspondent verification code for these cards, as they are completely fake and made up randomly.

To be completely clear and spell this out, these fake credit card numbers should not be used to try and purchase stuff. They merely respect guidelines of a valid credit card number. I advise you not not to try to use these for any actual transactions, only for testing purposes! In order to complete a purchase a combination of data must be had, and merely a card number is not enough. Information such as expiration date, card holders name and CVV numbers. Merely typing a valid credit card number into a form is not enough to purchase anything and you should not attempt to.

Read more about CNP transactions and how you need more information about a card to make a purchase remotely. We do not condone nor support fraud.

    Some terms and their meanings

    • Credit Card – Credit cards are a form of revolving loan by where the cardholder can access a line of credit to make purchases, cash advances, or balance transfers. As the outstanding balance is paid, the available credit line is restored for use again.
    • Cardholder – an individual to whom a credit card is issued. Typically, this individual is also responsible for payment of all charges made to that card. Corporate cards are an exception to this rule.
    • Issuer – an institution that issues credit cards to cardholders. This institution is also responsible for billing the cardholder for charges.
    • Merchant/Accepter – an individual, organization, or corporation that accepts credit cards as payment for merchandise or services.
    • Credit Limit – The amount of credit made available for you to use.
    • Billing Cycle – The date that your statement is produced every month. The payment due date is at least 22 later. This same date appears on every statement, regardless of holidays. Interest accrues at the time the statement cycles.
    • Personal Identification Number (PIN) – The number used to access their account to get cash at an ATM machine or make other PIN verified transactions. A number automatically generated by the computer, then sealed and sent to the cardholder. (Ex. Gas station charges)
    • See more of these over at the credit card glossary

    Why is this useful?

If you’ve ever found yourself trying to try a product online which required a credit card, even when you just want to take a look, you know why we made this. We believe there’s no need to share such information with providers without the actual intent to buy stuff. Anyone can make a website with a form and require you to insert valuable and sensitive information which requires you to give up your privacy. This is a way to protect yourself in such situations.

The other reason we made this are programmers testing ecommerce websites, applications or other software. They usually need lots of fake data, and this is a very easy way to generate a bunch of valid credit card numbers in a split second. There’s another tool for those times when you need to generate all other kinds of data .

More about the MOD 10 algorithm

The MOD 10 algorithm is a checksum (detection of errors) formula which is the common name for the Luhn algorithm. This formula has been in use to validate a lot of identification numbers besides credit cards since its development by scientist Hans Peter Luhn from IBM. To teach you how to manually validate a specific number, lets do an example:

Say we have 38520000023237 and we want to check if it could be a real credit card number

    • Take the last digit 7. This is our check digit
    • Take the rest of the sequence 3852000002323
    • Double every other digit starting from the right 6,8,10,2,0,0,0,0,0,2,6,2,6
    • Sum the digits of the products 10 = 1 + 0 = 1
    • Add all the digits together 6+8+1+2+0+0+0+0+0+2+6+2+6 = 33
    • Multiply the result by 9 33 * 9 = 297
    • Take the last digit of the result 7. If this matches the check digit we have a valid sequence
    • Since our check digit 7 matches our result 7. we conclude that this sequence would be a valid credit card number!

How do we generate Valid Credit Card Numbers?

In order for a credit card number to be valid, it has to be validated by the MOD 10 algorithm. This is an algorithm specifically designed to prevent accidental errors such as typos. Knowing the Major Industry Identifier (MII) and the Issuer Identification Number (IIN) we can prefix a credit card number and then randomly select the rest, as long as they comply to the MOD 10 algorithm.

For more complete testing data you can make up an expiration dates, a card holder name and possibly an address with a zip code.

We choose not to provide this data but you can easily make up this information. The real challenge is getting a valid credit card number which passes the test so that’s what we focused on.

Feel free to use the online credit card number generator as many times as you wish.

6 Ways to Pay Off $600 or $6,000 in Credit Card Debt

Falling in debt can be easy. Getting out of debt can be significantly more challenging, but certainly not impossible. Debt reduction is an important step toward achieving a stable financial future.

Whether you have $600 or $6,000 of debt, follow these six strategies to get out of the red and back on solid financial footing.

    1. Identify the debt source. Beyond fixed bills such as rent, car payments or utilities, few people have a firm grasp on where and how often they spend their discretionary dollars. Online personal finance tools can help take the guess work out of where you are spending money by aggregating your financial accounts in one place and providing a clear financial picture. Knowledge is power when it comes to your money. Once you have that visibility, identify areas where you can reduce spending or make tradeoffs. Perhaps it’s eating out two days a week instead of five, making your daily coffee at home or trying to buy more household items in bulk. You may find yourself with more money to pay off your debt and establish healthy spending patterns to ensure you’re never in the red again.

    2. Pay off the highest interest rates first. When tackling credit card debt. take a look at the interest rates of all your cards, and sort them from highest to lowest. Many people tend to focus on paying off the credit card with the largest balance, but it’s the one with the highest interest rate that can prevent you from reaching your debt reduction goal. By dedicating higher payments toward the card with the highest interest first, you’ll more quickly rid yourself of the debt that has the most substantial impact on your finances.

    3. Leave ‘em at home. If you’re working to pay off credit card debt, it’s imperative you don’t add any additional purchases to your existing balance. Now that doesn’t mean you should race to pay off your cards and then cancel them immediately (that can actually have damaging consequences for your credit score ). Ease into the mindset of using a debit card or cash for purchases you previously would have charged to credit. Leaving the credit cards at home will also give you insight into how much money you have available in real time.

    4. Transfer balances. This is also known as snowballing. If you haven’t reached the maximum limit on your credit cards with lower interest rates. consider transferring bills with higher interest to them. There can be fees associated with a transfer. so make sure the lower interest rate offsets the cost. This strategy also requires a fair amount of discipline to not spend on the newly cleared card while also committing to pay off the balance you transfer over. It will, however, help you pay off cards with higher interest rates in a much more timely fashion.

    5. Borrow from yourself. If you’re completely overwhelmed with debt, it’s OK to dip (temporarily) into your savings. Just be strategic about it. Earmark a specific amount as an emergency fund that is off limits while paying down your debt, just in case anything unexpected comes up. There’s nothing worse than having to go even deeper into debt when you’re trying to climb your way out. If you must borrow from your savings or emergency fund, remember to replenish it as soon as the debt is paid off.

    6. Look into earning more. Do you have a talent or skill in an area that people would be willing to pay you for? Try your hand at freelancing to make a few dollars on the side. You could also look into selling your unwanted possessions on eBay, picking up jobs on TaskRabbit or turning your hobby into a source of income. You might be able to generate a substantial amount of cash, all of which can be funneled to paying off debt quicker.

Debt can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be depressing. Start by incorporating these strategies into a debt reduction plan that works best for you so the process won’t become too overwhelming. Taking control of your money, and sticking to a plan will have you seeing green in no time!
