Online Medical Coding Certificate

Reviewing patient records and getting vital health data where it needs to go relies on medical coding. In the Information Age, this system of universal code numbers assures the timely flow of medical data anywhere in the nation or world.

By earning your medical coding certificate through the IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI, you can take your courses online, for maximum convenience. You can even apply credit earned for the certificate toward our Bachelor of Science in health information management.

Certification

Graduates are eligible to seek the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) credential offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). This certification distinguishes coders who exhibit commitment and demonstrate coding competencies across all settings, including hospitals and physician practices.

A critical part of the health information work flow

Medical coders ensure that insurance companies have the right information and patients know their billing and payment options. Accurate coding gets bills paid, patient data organized, and insurance information verified.

With proper medical coding:

  • Health care providers can precisely record patients’ care, so crucial procedures don’t get missed.
  • Tests and screenings aren’t needlessly repeated, which means patients don’t pay more than they should.
  • Insurers can quickly reimburse providers.

The increasing reliance on data

To make valid decisions, accurate information is key. The medical coder carefully reviews health records for accurate coding and billing. By earning this certificate, you’ll learn to understand medical terminology, private payer policies, and government regulations.

Electronic health records allow doctors, hospitals, and other providers to quickly share information, leading to swift and informed medical decision-making. This information holds great potential as a Big Data resource for analyzing specific codes—a method of studying how conditions progress and are treated on a mega scale.

Emerging technology issues

Data security and patient privacy are paramount in the age of electronic record-keeping. As you earn your certificate, you’ll not only gain understanding of medical coding and reimbursement systems, but also learn:

  • The latest principles in the emerging field of information governance.
  • Legal and ethical concepts of confidentiality and privacy in medicine and health care.

Projected employment growth for medical coders from 2012 to 2022

Careers in medical coding

Medical coders audit inpatient/outpatient health records (both paper and electronic) for appropriate ICD-9/ICD-10 and/or CPT code assignment. Coders also aid in revenue cycle auditing. Medical coders work in hospitals, physician offices, group practices, and insurance companies.

A certificate in medical coding can be the foundation for a variety of positions, including:

I work in the technical side of health care, and I registered in The Chang School’s Health Informatics program to help keep my skills relevant and open doors for future opportunities. I am just completing my first course and to my surprise, I still have great work-life balance and actually enjoy my weekly assignments. I had some fears about the differences between online courses and the traditional in-class model, but the instructors have been superb and very supportive. I also enjoy collaborating and interacting with fellow health care professionals. It provides opportunities to see what others in the field are doing, and has even given me ideas on how I can effect change in my own workplace.

What is Palliative Care?

What is palliative care?

Palliative care is care that helps people live their life as fully and as comfortably as possible when living with a life-limiting or terminal illness.

Palliative care identifies and treats symptoms which may be physical, emotional, spiritual or social. Because palliative care is based on individual needs, the services offered will differ but may include:

  • Relief of pain and other symptoms e.g. vomiting, shortness of breath
  • Resources such as equipment needed to aid care at home
  • Assistance for families to come together to talk about sensitive issues
  • Links to other services such as home help and financial support
  • Support for people to meet cultural obligations
  • Support for emotional, social and spiritual concerns
  • Counselling and grief support
  • Referrals to respite care services

Palliative care is a family-centred model of care, meaning that family and carers can receive practical and emotional support.

Who is palliative care for?

Palliative care is for people of any age who have been told that they have a serious illness that cannot be cured. Palliative care assists people with illnesses such as cancer, motor neurone disease and end-stage kidney or lung disease to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

For some people, palliative care may be beneficial from the time of diagnosis with a serious life-limiting illness. Palliative care can be given alongside treatments given by other doctors.

Who is in the palliative care team?

Your GP, aged care worker and any other health care provider plays an important role in providing palliative care, as do family carers. They are supported by specialist palliative care services if symptoms become difficult to manage.

Where is palliative care provided?

Palliative care is provided where the person and their family wants, where possible. This may include:

  • At home
  • In hospital
  • In a hospice
  • In a residential aged care facility

Many people indicate a preference to die at home and making this possible often depends on several factors, including:

  • the nature of the illness and amount of care the person needs
  • how much support is available from the person’s family and community
  • whether the person has someone at home who can provide physical care and support for them.

How do I get palliative care?

For help and information ask your:

  • Doctor
  • Aboriginal Health Worker
  • Hospital Liaison Officer
  • HACC Worker
  • Nurse

Where can I find more information?

For more information contact the palliative care peak body in your state

Become a Nationally Certified Medical Biller through AMBA

Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist

Know the Difference – Certification Exam V. Certificate Program or Course

Purpose of the CMRS Exam

The purpose of this certification is to promote ethical and professional medical billing through certification of qualified individuals by formally recognizing proficiency demonstrated by having passed the CMRS (Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist) exam, encouraging continued professional and personal best development and providing a national standard assessment based on industry knowledge. Certification demonstrates to physicians, employers and others that you have taken proactive steps to advance your education, knowledge and skills.

The CMRS designation is awarded by the Certifying Board of the American Medical Billing Association (CBAMBA). Although there is no state or Federal requirement of a medical billing professional to become certified to practice medical billing, it is our goal to provide a professional certification exam that upholds a high ethical standard of knowledge that recognizes the competency of a certificant.

Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialists (CMRS) are skilled in facilitating the claims paying process from the time a service is rendered by a health care provider until the balance is paid. The CMRS is knowledgeable in ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS coding, medical terminology, insurance claims and billing, appeals and denials, fraud and abuse, HIPAA, OIG compliance, information and web technology, reimbursement, and much more. CMRS Billers play a critical role in a health care provider’s daily business operations.

Certification provides knowledge and credibility to the biller and to potential health care providers as well as employers. It demonstrates your commitment and dedication in providing the highest standards possible in Claims Management and Medical Billing. Certification presents solid confirmation of your desire to offer qualified services in an industry that is complex and demands specialized training. Certification provides verification of competency and assurance of continued education to maintain the credential. CMRS testing is provided on a national level. Our credential allows billers to empower themselves by taking steps to improve confidence and enhance value to the industry and the doctors they work with.

More and more physicians and other healthcare providers are looking for certified professionals that understand regulatory and business issues that affect their practices. CMRS’s have the knowledge, skills and confidence to be more effective in increasing revenue, preventing fraud and abuse and researching and finding information that helps practices succeed in today’s environment and economy.

1.05: Medical Billing Certification

Certification is not a requirement, but professional medical billers will find that certification leads to more job opportunities, better pay, and more chances for significant career advancement.

We’ll break down the different medical certifications by the organization that grants them. For the sake of brevity, we’ll cover the two largest certifying organizations in medical billing, the American Medical Billing Association (AMBA) and the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC).

We’ll start with the AMBA.

The AMBA is a professional organization dedicated entirely to the medical billing field. The AMBA has been certifying medical billing professionals through their Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist (CMRS) exam for over a decade.

This exam, much like the CPC exam is a large, comprehensive exam that tests individuals on all phases of the medical billing process. Students must be a member of AMBA to take the exam. Membership in AMBA costs $99 annually.

The exam is comprised of 16 sections, covering:

  • Medical Terminology
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Information Technology and Computers
  • Web and Information Technology
  • ICD-10-CM Coding
  • CPT Coding
  • EDI Transactions and Clearinghouses
  • CMS 1500 Claim Form
  • Insurance
  • Insurance Carriers
  • Acronyms/Terms in Healthcare Use
  • Compliance and HIPPA
  • Fraud and Abuse
  • Managed Care
  • General
  • Case Studies

There are over 800 questions in this exam, and students must earn an 85% or higher to pass. Students take this exam online and have 45 days from sign-up to complete the exam. The CMRS exam is divided into sections. Upon completion of one section, the student’s grade will be available immediately. Comprehensive scores are also available immediately upon completion.

Should you fail to score 85% or higher on the test, you are allowed two free retakes, with at least 30 (but no more than 60) days between retakes.

In order to prepare for the exam, you can purchase the a CMRS study guide for $199 in the AMBA store. The CMRS recommends at least some experience in billing, or a very strong foundation in the practice, before you take the exam. You are also required to have a high school diploma or equivalent in order to take the class.

You are allowed—and encouraged—to use the current publications for medical coding during the exam, including the CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II coding manuals.

Once you’ve passed your exam, you’ll need to maintain your certification. In order to do this, the AMBA requires you to complete 15 credits of continuing education each year, in addition to maintaining your annual membership.

Continuing education credits includes classes available through AMBA, AMA, Cengage, and a number of other organizations. Continuing education credits through the AAPC, American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), Practice Management Institute (PMI), and Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) are available for half-credit toward your continuing education credits. The full list of approved continuing education courses is available here: http://www.ambanet.net/ceu.pdf.

As the largest organization of health information professionals, the American Association of Professional Coders focuses mainly on medical coding, but they do offer a medical billing certification.

This certification, which is earned upon the completion of the Certified Professional Biller (CPB™) exam, tests the medical biller on every facet of the billing profession. Like the CPC™ discussed in Course 1-4, this certification is a rigorous but well-respected benchmark for professionals in the health information field.

The CPB™ exam takes five hours and 40 minutes to complete, and consists of 200 questions focused on:

  • Types of insurance
  • Billing regulations
  • HIPAA and compliance
  • Reimbursement and collections
  • Billing
  • Coding
  • Case Studies

Unlike the CMRS exam, individuals taking the CPB™ exam must complete the test in one sitting. Students should bring their code books, which list ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes. Students must earn a 65% or higher in order to pass the exam. Refer to the eBook for a more detailed description of the CPB™ exam.

Like the CMRS certification, individuals must pay for a membership in the sponsoring organization (in this case, the AAPC) and must demonstrate completion of a certain amount of continuing education courses in order to maintain their certification. For the CPB™, individuals must complete 36 units of continuing education every two years.

Continuing education may take the form of seminars, online classes, meetings, training courses, and other forms of instruction. In order to get a full picture of what continuing education units are available, visit the AAPC’s Continuing Education Unit (CEU) page.

Today we are experiencing ever-increasing stress in our lives due to demands of our jobs, family situations and economic conditions. The ability to maintain composure during these times, and avoid inappropriate expressions of anger, is a crucial skill to living a healthy, happy, and balanced life.

There are many reasons why anger may be manifesting within us today, including:

    • things not going the way we want them to
    • not getting our important needs met in situations
    • feeling we are not treated fairly
    • someone treating us in unkind or abusive ways
    • feeling disrespected or not understood by others
    • learning as a child from family mambers that using anger
    • to get what we wanted was normal behavior.

However, none of the reasons above can ever be used as justification for outbursts of unsafe anger and rage. With new, tougher assault and domestic violence laws now in force, it s more important now than ever for all of us to take responsibility for our behaviors that affect others.

    How Our Programs Help

Anger Management Associates (AMA) is dedicated to helping people whose ways of expressing anger are resulting in problems within their family and workplace relationships as well as in public settings. Our goal is to help individuals develop their Emotional Intelligence skills for living happier, more peaceful and successful lives. We provide not only proven in-class training, but guide our students in how to apply the techniques and skills they learn to every day living. The life-changing skills learned help you make positive changes that you and others will recognize. AMA classes are taught by a certified anger management instructor and are accepted by the court systems. Participants receive a Certificate of Completion at the completion of their class.

Through our Free Phone Consultation. AMA will help you select the best program for your needs. Private follow-up phone support is always available for participants who have completed our classes.

    About the Instructor

For the past 19 years, Lou Orsan, MFA, has been dedicated to helping people learn Emotional Intelligence skills where they honor each other s uniqueness and where adults can create safe, loving and nurturing family environments for children to grow and thrive within. Before retiring from private counseling in 2008, Lou offered anger management and couple s relationship counseling and emotional healing therapy in addition to teaching classes.

In his work today, Lou continues to provide anger management and couple s relationship classes for individuals referred by county and state court systems and social service agencies, as well as self-referred individuals who choose to learn skills to manage their emotions more effectively. His programs are also sought out by human resource departments of corporations and City and State government agencies seeking to help their employees acquire emotional regulation skills for the workplace.

Lou s training includes certified anger management provider training through the American Counseling Association (ACA) and domestic violence continuing education training approved by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).

    Surgical Technologist Certification

Surgical tech certification is an optional way for trained surgical technicians to demonstrate their expertise in the surgical tech profession. In general, surgical techs who are certified by one of the known certifying organizations are more attractive to employers and may experience several career benefits.

For most certifications, surgical technicians become certified by following three basic steps:

Training program requirements vary between certifications, and each have their own set of eligibility requirements. The most well-known surgical tech certification credentials are described below.

The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) Certification

The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) offers a surgical tech certification called the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST). This certification highlights expertise in areas such as pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care, as well as other skill areas and medical knowledge.

Candidates for the CST certification must be one of the following:

    • A surgical tech who graduated from a CAAHEP-accredited surgical tech school
    • A surgical tech who graduated from a CAAHEP-accredited military surgical tech training program
    • A surgical tech who possesses the Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C) designation

    The CST Examination

Once eligible, candidates of the CST designation complete a written exam. The exam covers three major areas: perioperative care, additional duties, and basic science. Certification candidates contact the NBSTSA trough their website to prepare for and schedule the exam and pay examination fees. Some surgical techs choose to take the exam within the last month of training or within one year of graduation.

After passing the exam, a surgical tech is free to use the CST designation. The certification requires continuing education and must be renewed every 5 years.

The Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C) Certification

Another surgical tech certification is called the Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C), offered through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). This certification demonstrates knowledge in several science and medical topics, surgical technician skill areas, and safety regulations.

Candidates for the TS-C certification must be one of the following:

    • A surgical tech who graduated from an NCCT-approved surgical tech school within the last 10 years, with relevant work experience
    • A surgical tech who graduated from a non-NCCT-approved training program within the last two years, with at least one year of work experience
    • A surgical tech with seven years of qualifying experience within the last 10 years
    • An MD, RN, LPN, or LVN with experience as a surgical technician

    The TS-C Examination

The TS-C exam covers topics such as medical terminology, asepsis and infection control, pharmacology, OSHA regulations, surgical knowledge and other career skills. Candidates can prepare using NCCT review materials, and must pay exam fees.

After passing the exam and becoming certified, the TS-C certification must be renewed each year through continuing education, some of which is offered by the NCCT.

The Certified Operating Room and Surgical Technician (CORST) Certification

The National Healthcare Association (NHA) offers the Certified Operating Room and Surgical Technician (CORST) designation. This certification shows a surgical technician’s expertise in areas relating to general medical and surgical knowledge.

Candidates for the CORST certification must meet both of the following requirements:

    • High-school graduation
    • Graduation from a formal surgical tech training program. or one year of surgical technician work experience

    The CORST Examination

The CORST exam contains 200 questions and covers 101 knowledge areas relating to work as a surgical technician, surgical and anatomical knowledge, and general safety. Study materials are available through the NHA.

Benefits of Certification for Surgical Techs

One benefit to gaining surgical technician certification is the fact that a national certification is a prestigious credential showing the holder meets rigorous surgical tech knowledge standards. Certified individuals can be safely assumed to understand a wide range of surgical procedures, aseptic techniques and patient care. Because certification is optional for surgical technicians, passing an exam demonstrates ambition and dedication that is respected by health care professionals of all types.

Surgical techs who are certified are also more competitive in the job market, as most facilities prefer to hire surgical techs who are certified. Certain states are even considering legislation that will make certification a basic requirement for employment. Certified surgical techs also have a higher earning potential in the long run, and can demand a higher salary .

For more information on surgical tech certification, visit the websites of the certifying organizations below:

    Training 2000 Cyber Security

    Who are we?

Established in April 2016, Training 2000’s Cyber Security Centre has developed into a key hub for Lancashire businesses and the wider North West region, supporting organisations across every industry sector.

Local SMEs and large corporations are all susceptible to cyber-attack, with unique vulnerabilities often found in each organisation.

Whether a structural weakness within digital systems or weak procedures where employees may be the route in for a cyber breach, there is a real need to get on the front foot and protect against the criminals that operate online.

Training 2000 Cyber Security can offer you:

Why is cyber security so important?

In spite of being aware of the risks, many businesses are not protected against the wide range of techniques that cyber criminals have to steal to data and damage their hard-earned profits.

By not addressing the threat, companies are leaving themselves massively exposed – essentially leaving themselves vulnerable online in much the same way as leaving offices unlocked and sensitive data accessible in the real world.

We will work with you to identify your company’s exposure to risk and help you to build an all-encompassing cyber security strategy which protects you from both the technical threats and the human risks that can lead to a security breach.

“A damaging cyber breach can effectively shut a business down – by destroying customer confidence and causing significant financial loss.”

    Our Facilities

With a full iMac suite, bespoke group working space and break out area, our training centre is designed to help delegates get the most from their course.

The Cyber Security Centre also includes a 100-seat lecture hall, perfect for larger scale events.

Whether technical training aimed at IT professionals or one of our sessions which focus on staff awareness for entry level staff or decision makers, our facilities are the perfect setting for the focused training that businesses need to stay protected online.

Essential cyber awareness training at our purpose-built Cyber Security Centre

    Matthew Collinge at Dugdale Nutrition

They have offered practical and impractical advice and helped at every step along the way. I look forward to working with the team well in to the future to continue to ensure that we are doing everything we can to stay secure and prevent financial loss from any security breaches.

Mark Chung Director, Lancashire Marketing Solutions Ltd.

Training 2000 and their expert security consultants helped me through the process of Cyber Essentials certification. Having this means my business is doing everything it can to protect my client s data. I would strongly recommend any size of business, contact Training 2000 today before they fall victim to a cyber attack.

    4 cyber security myths busted

Our Cyber Security Business Manager Sarah Green is on hand to debunk some of the myths surrounding our cyber world. T or F? “Hackers? They must be some breed of technological genii” Answer: F. It is impeccably simple to learn how to perform basic hacks. There are numerous online forums dedicated to step by step guides for how to hack websites, networks, phones with try-your-hand targets and links to where to buy the tools you need. The chances are you’ll get caught within days and with the laws changing to crack down on cybercrime, most probably land themselves in some serious hot water. If you fancy testing your skills, and potentially seeking a career in Ethical Hacking, there are loads of fun ‘capture the flag’ type websites. T or F? “It’ll never happen to me”. Answer: F. It might not, but then again it might. Everyone I ever speak to has some experience of cybercrime. Be it the HMRC email telling you to CLICK HERE to claim your tax refund, or having your card cloned and buying twenty mobile phones in Jersey, everyone has some experience of themselves/their parents/friends/pets being affected by cybercrime. Whilst there are still unknown unknowns in the cyber world, a known known is that attacks are ever-evolving and are growing in sophistication at an exponential rate. Home or work, if you’re a computer user then security is a necessity. T or F? “The cost of cyber crime is in excess of £266 billion to the global economy PER YEAR”. Answer: T. Yes, you read it right. It’s costing us and our businesses two hundred and sixty-six billion pounds per year to deal with the effects of cybercrime. Let’s put that into perspective: There are 7.4 billion people in the world, so effectively, that’s £38 for every person in the world per year handed over. What else could we buy for £38? T or F? “It’s money they’re after – providing the accounts are secure we’ll be fine.” Answer: F. This is an obvious thought, they must just want to get into the accounts and steal the money. Not true – sensitive data carries a whopping price tag and is used as ransom in some cases. We have a number of industry-specific courses taking place over the next few months – you can find out more and book on here.

    PMP Certification

PMP Certification is the preeminent credential for Project Managers.

Project Management Professional (PMP) certification demonstrates the knowledge and experience to successfully bring business and IT projects to completion. PMP certified professionals have the project management expertise and managerial skills to complete projects on time, within scope and under budget.

The Project Management Institute (PMI) sets forth strict eligibility requirements before you can take the PMP exam – see the current PMP eligibility requirements below. Beyond the required education and experience, Project Management Professionals pledge adherence to a code of professional conduct, and periodically satisfy continuing education requirements to keep their PMP certificate active.

PMP certification is widely recognized as the pinnacle of project management credentials by businesses and government agencies worldwide, across all industries. Several Fortune 500 companies require their PMs, managers and IT leads to be PMP certified. PMP certification is a true differentiator; project managers without a PMP are at a competitive disadvantage.

If you’re an experienced project manager looking to solidify your skills, stand out to employers and maximize your earning potential, PMP certification is the credential for you.

I was a professional musician in the community for years, where I met several older people and heard their stories. I became interested in aging, and eventually came up with an idea to open the first retirement residence for LGBT people in Toronto. I enrolled in The Chang School s Certificate in Gerontology while wrapping up my college degree. My instructors urged me to think critically about the broad nature of aging, and the small course sizes introduced me to contacts from several backgrounds and fostered rich class discussions. Now I have a deep understanding of the breadth of healthcare to carry me forward.

A Data Centre has the option to have its compliance certification validated by TIA-942.org. A compliance certification can be issued by anyone or any company, whether qualified or not. TIA-942.org offers the service to validate the auditor’s report on compliance to verify the correctness of the audit.

The validated status and what it means:

    • Not validated – means that proof of compliance has not been submitted to www.tia-942.org for verification
    • Validated – means that audit report has been submitted to www.tia-942.org and has been reviewed and approved for its correctness. The site will then receive the ANSI/TIA-942 compliance certificate from TIA-942.org.

This status indicates whether the data center has been audited by an external auditor.

    Rated-1: Basic Site Infrastructure
A data center which has single capacity components and a single, non-redundant distribution path serving the computer equipment. It has limited protection against physical events.

Rated-2: Redundant Capacity Component Site Infrastructure
A data center which has redundant capacity components and a single, non-redundant distribution path serving the computer equipment. It has improved protection against physical events.

    Rated-3: Concurrently Maintainable Site Infrastructure
A data center which has redundant capacity components and multiple independent distribution paths serving the computer equipment. Typically, only one distribution path serves the computer equipment at any time. The site is concurrently maintainable which means that each and every capacity component including elements which are part of the distribution path, can be removed/replaced/serviced on a planned basis without disrupting the ICT capabilities to the End-User. It has protection against most physical events.

    Rated-4: Fault Tolerant Site Infrastructure
A data center which has redundant capacity components and multiple independent distribution paths serving the computer equipment which all are active. The data center allows concurrent maintainability and one (1) fault anywhere in the installation without causing downtime. It has protection against almost all physical events.

    ANSI/TIA-942 Design Certification
This status indicates that the design documents of the data center under scope have been reviewed for conformity to the design criteria of the ANSI/TIA-942 standard for the respective Rating level.

    ANSI/TIA-942 Site Certification
This status indicates that the data center facilty under scope has been physically inspected for conformity to the design criteria of the ANSI/TIA-942 standard for respective Rating level. This physical inspection covers both an assessment of all related design documents as well as a physical onsite inspection for each area under the scope of the ANSI/TIA-942 standard.

    Non-Certified
This status indicates that the data center has made a self-declaration about its Rating level and other technical details. As such, no third party has validated the info provided. Customers are advised to validate the info provided.

TIA-942 standard certification is valid for 3 years. By the end of year-1 and year-2, TIA-942 requires the data center to undergo a surveillance audit. And by end of year-3, to keep its certification valid, the data center has to undergo a recertification audit. In summary:

    • Year 0 – compliance certification
    • Year 1 – surveillance audit
    • Year 2 – surveillance audit
    • Year 3 – recertification audit

The status and what it means:

    • Active – an active status means the data center has done the required surveillance and/or recertification audits.
    • Surveillance audit pending – this means the data center is due for surveillance audit and either has not done the surveillance audit or has not submitted the surveillance audit report to TIA-942.org.
    • Recertification audit pending – this means the data center is due for recertification audit and either has not done the recertification audit or has not submitted the recertification audit report to TIA-942.org. The data center has 90 days after expiration of its certification to submit the recertification audit report to TIA-942.org.
    • Withdrawn – a withdrawn status means that the 3-year validity period of the certification has expired and the data center either has not taken action to conduct a recertification audit or has not submitted the recertification audit report to TIA-942.org after 90 days period. The certification is considered withdrawn.

    About Data Centers

With few exceptions, companies today rely heavily on IT for the delivery of business-critical services often directly to the end consumer. It is therefore vital that the mission-critical Data Center is designed, maintained and operated with high-availability and efficiency in mind.

When building and operating a data center one wants to ensure that it has been designed and built based on globally accepted standards, yet have the flexibility to adapt to the business requirements.

Survey results show that in more than 78% of the cases, data center operator/owners chose the ANSI/TIA-942 standard when it comes to designing and building a data center.

    The ANSI/TIA-942 is often chosen for a number of factors including;

    – It is a real standard issued by a non-profit organization
    – TIA is accredited by ANSI
    – The standard is publically available leading to great transparency
    – The standard covers all aspects of the physical data center including site location, architecture, security, safety, fire suppression, electrical, mechanical and telecommunication

The ANSI/TIA-942 standard serves as a baseline for anybody who wishes to build a reliable and efficient data center.

    Types of ANSI/TIA-942 Certification

    • ANSI/TIA-942 Design Certification
This status indicates that the design documents of the data center under scope have been reviewed for conformity to the design criteria of the ANSI/TIA-942 standard for the respective Rating/Tier* level.
    • ANSI/TIA-942 Site Certification
This status indicates that the data center facilty under scope has been physically inspected for conformity to the design criteria of the ANSI/TIA-942 standard for respective Rating/Tier* level. This physical inspection covers both an assessment of all related design documents as well as a physical onsite inspection for each area under the scope of the ANSI/TIA-942 standard.

ANSI/TIA-942 describes four Rating/Tier* levels in which data centers can be classified. Below is the high level description of each Rating/Tier* level. Detailed specifications are given in the ANSI/TIA-942 standard.

    • Rated-1/Tier-1*: Basic Site Infrastructure
A data center which has single capacity components and a single, non-redundant distribution path serving the computer equipment. It has limited protection against physical events.
    • Rated-2/Tier-2*: Redundant Capacity Component Site Infrastructure
A data center which has redundant capacity components and a single, non-redundant distribution path serving the computer equipment. It has improved protection against physical events.
    • Rated-3/Tier-3*: Concurrently Maintainable Site Infrastructure
A data center which has redundant capacity components and multiple independent distribution paths serving the computer equipment. Typically, only one distribution path serves the computer equipment at any time. The site is concurrently maintainable which means that each and every capacity component including elements which are part of the distribution path, can be removed/replaced/serviced on a planned basis without disrupting the ICT capabilities to the End-User. It has protection against most physical events.
    • Rated-4/Tier-4*: Fault Tolerant Site Infrastructure
A data center which has redundant capacity components and multiple independent distribution paths serving the computer equipment which all are active. The data center allows concurrent maintainability and one (1) fault anywhere in the installation without causing downtime. It has protection against almost all physical events.

TIA-942 standard certification is valid for 3 years. By the end of year-1 and year-2, the data center should undergo a surveillance audit. By the end of year-3, the data center has to undergo a recertification audit in order to keep its certification valid.

    * The term Tier was used in the ANSI/TIA-942 Standard until the ANSI/TIA-942:March-2014 edition. In the March 2014 edition the term Tier has been replaced by either Rated or Rating .

Online Nail Technician Schools and Certification Programs

Nail technicians are also referred to as manicurists or pedicurists. Although you probably won’t be able to take all of your courses online, read on to learn what distance education options are available in this field. Also find out how to select an online school and whether certification is available online. Schools offering Nail Technology degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

    What You Need to Know

It is important to consider a school that is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences (NACCAS). Certification is oftentimes voluntary and issued through nationally recognized certification or credentialing organizations to professionals who demonstrate their expertise.

    Beauty schools and community colleges

    Certifications and Licenses

Certificate programs available, course hours may be used toward state licensure

Some general education and continuing education credits available via distance learning

How Do I Select an Online Nail Technician School?

School accreditation by the NACCAS can help ensure that a school’s curriculum meets quality standards set by the accreditation agency. You may also want to verify that a school is approved by your state’s board of cosmetology, otherwise certificate or continuing education classes may not count towards licensure. Also, consider schools whose cosmetology and nail technician instructors are licensed professionals with experience in the field.

    Can I Earn Certification Online?

Many beauty schools and community colleges offer cosmetology or nail technician certificate programs, rather than certifications. These 1-year programs prepare future nail technicians to meet mandatory coursework and exam prerequisites so they can become licensed by the state in which they wish to practice.

Most schools’ nail technician certificate programs are offered in a traditional classroom setting and not online. However, you may be able to complete general education requirements or introductory cosmetology courses online. You can also earn continuing education (CE) credit through distance education. These courses may be required by your state board of cosmetology to renew your nail technician license.

What Online Classes Are Available to Me?

Some schools offer online courses that discuss nail anatomy and physiology, manicure and pedicure procedures or nail disorders. These classes may also discuss test preparation strategies for your state board of cosmetology’s licensure exam. If you enroll in a program with general education courses, you may take introductory business and math classes online. For online CE courses, you may study pathogens, ways to dispose of infected materials, marketing and overall hygiene. You may also study the interviewing skills and goal-setting strategies needed to manage your career.

    What Career Options Are Available?

In addition to nail salons and spas, you might find work at hotels, cruise lines, nursing homes, tanning salons or resorts. With experience, you can look into managing or owning a nail salon. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job market for manicurists and pedicurists is expected to increase by 16% during the 2012-2022 decade (www.bls.gov ). This increase is higher than the national average and due in part to potential growth in the number of nail salons and full-service spas.

    Online ESL Degree Programs Resource

An ESL degree can be put to use in many career positions, such as teaching in elementary to high schools, in colleges and universities, or overseas, or tutoring students one-on-one. Qualified K-12 teachers of English as a second language are in high demand, as the field is a designated shortage area in many regions in the US. Many ESL programs are available to choose from, including online ESL degree programs.

    ESL Degrees Certification

Whether they graduate from traditional universities or online schools, ESL degree holders can qualify for many types of jobs. Because there has been an influx of foreign students as well as growing numbers of US-born students who speak a language other than English at home, there is a significant need for ESL teachers in the US. In addition to placements in the US, there are ESL jobs in a variety of countries that range from full-time, permanent positions to temporary opportunities that can keep the instructor constantly on the move.

Profiles of English Second Language Programs

    Western Governors University
Western Governors University s ELL (English Language Learners) Endorsement Preparation Program allows already-certified elementary and secondary teachers to qualify for an additional endorsement to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) in grades kindergarten through 12. The program, which students complete entirely online with the exception of a three-credit practicum, generally requires 12 to 18 months to complete. Each semester runs for six months. All ELL/ESL students will be matched with a mentor, with whom they will work throughout the program. The curriculum covers such topics as culture, the professional role of the ELL teacher, and subject-specific pedagogy. All students will complete a mandatory orientation to acclimate them to online learning. WGU recommends that students investigate their state s ELL/ESL certification requirements, which may require additional examinations or coursework that is specific to the individual state.

    Texas A M University
Texas A M University s graduate program in English as a Second Language (ESL) provides students with the opportunity to earn a Master of Science (MS) or a Master of Education (MEd), the latter of which prepares students to move on to doctoral study. Graduates of the program gain the credentials to teach ESL in a number of settings, including kindergarten through 12th grade, in community programs, at community colleges, and in school settings abroad. 32 credits are necessary to earn the MS, while the MEd program requires 36 credits. All ESL graduate students must complete the same three core classes: Analysis of Teaching Behavior, Cultural Foundations of Education, and Curriculum Development. The program takes place in a traditional classroom setting on campus. GRE scores are not required.

    Arizona State University
Arizona State University features a 30-credit graduate program leading to a Master of Arts (MA) in Curriculum and Instruction – English as a Second Language (ESL). Students will complete a comprehensive curriculum that includes an introduction to research, ESL for children, assessment and evaluation of English Language Learner (ELL) students, and bilingualism and second language acquisition. The program culminates with a practicum in which students gain hands-on teaching experience in an ESL classroom. The mandatory practicum ensures graduate students meet all of the educational requirements for earning an endorsement in ESL in Arizona.

    ESL Degree Requirements and Coursework

Personal characteristics that fit well with the role of an ESL teacher include patience, good communication skills, a strong desire to teach speakers of another language, and a strong work ethic. Bilingualism is helpful. TEFL forum – Best online TEFL course?

    20 Apr 2006 at 15:59

Hi! I would also advice agaist taking an online course because they are not usually recognized by employers. I took a TEFL course in Prague that I would highly recommend. It is called TEFL Worldwide Prague and the web site is http://www.teflworldwideprague.com. I have been teaching in Prague for a year now, and the quality of instruction that I recieved at TEFL Worldwide was higher than I expected. Some of my friends went on to teach in Asia and Western Europe after the course .so if you are interested in traveling it might be fun to stay in Prague for the month and then move on. Good luck in your school search!

just to add to the list:

I would not accept an on-line qualification.

Not only is it a dubious business to start with [teaching is about face-to-face contact, not sending atachments on an email] but the only person I met who was involved with an on-line tefl course was, himself, recently qualified but without shame. How do you know who they are?

You can risk teaching /finding work unqualified and, if you think you want to spend a while as a traveller/language teacher, get a real qualification 4 weeks intensive WITH PRACTICAL/TP ELEMENT preferably RSA or Trinity.

    Hi all,
Very glad to find some info on this forum about online TEFL training!
I m am currently looking for online TEFL programs, the reason is that I can t afford a full TEFL certification, and at this point don t think this is what I want to do with my life, it s just for temporary work.
Essentially my partner is going to go to grad school in Italy and if I want to go there with her I have to be able to pull my weight, financially. It seems that the best way to do this will be teaching English, but as noted above, I can t afford the full 120 hour on-site course.
Is it better to have an online TEFL certification than nothing in Italy? I don t have a preference as far as where I work (schools, businesses, personal tutoring), just as long as I can get by.

    Many thanks!
    Alex

It must be a sad state of affairs if the on-line tefflers have to spend their time posting free sneak ads on this and every other web board in the world of TESOL.

Fewer and fewer school are accepting on-line certificates.
We do not generally accept on-line certificates either, unless they were for lat least 120 hours study, and the job applicant has some practical teaching experience.

However, it must not only be either a CELTA or a Trinity Cert. and not all the institutes offering them are doing a good job of it. One UK firm had its Trinity licence revoked recently, and there are plenty of complaints about cowboy franchise chains in Thailand trying to deliver on CELTA. There are other organisations offering alternative face-to-face courses, particularly in Asia where the cost of living and the courses are much cheaper and some are very good. The downside is that some are rotten to the core as clearly explained in this TESOL scam article.

You cannot have it all ways but if you want it one way, you can teach in Thailand

I m just about to start online TEFL with i-to-i. I ve done quite a bit of research and press stuff about them seems to be extremely positive

    About ECFMG Certification

ECFMG was founded in 1956 to assess, through a program of certification, whether international medical graduates (IMGs) are ready to enter residency or fellowship programs in the United States that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME ). ACGME requires IMGs who enter ACGME-accredited programs to be certified by ECFMG. ECFMG Certification is also one of the eligibility requirements for IMGs to take Step 3 of the three-step United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE ). Medical licensing authorities in the United States require that IMGs be certified by ECFMG, among other requirements, to obtain an unrestricted license to practice medicine.

The foundation of ECFMG s certification program has endured remarkably over the last five decades. Throughout the history of the program, the requirements have included examinations in the medical sciences, evaluation of English language proficiency, and documentation of medical education credentials. Over the years, there have been changes in the examinations accepted to meet the requirements for ECFMG Certification and changes to the requirements themselves. These changes have been made to enhance the certification program, respond to the needs of the U.S. graduate medical education community, comply with the changing immigration landscape, take advantage of new technologies, and achieve a common examination pathway to medical licensure for IMGs and U.S. medical graduates.

ECFMG Certification is an effective screening mechanism for ensuring that IMGs in patient care situations have met minimum standards. Each year, thousands of IMGs in the certification process apply to ECFMG for USMLE. Just over half of these individuals are successful in completing all the examination and medical education credential requirements for ECFMG Certification. During the 20-year period from 1991 through 2010, more than 295,000 international medical students/graduates applied to take their first examination with ECFMG; of this number, 60.7% have achieved certification.
