A colocation (colo) is a data center facility in which a business can rent space for servers and other computing hardware.

Typically, a colo provides the building, cooling, power, bandwidth and physical security while the customer provides servers and storage. Space in the facility is often leased by the rack, cabinet, cage or room. Many colos have extended their offerings to include managed services that support their customers’ business initiatives.

There are several reasons a business might choose a colo over building its own data center, but one of the main drivers is the capital expenditures (CAPEX ) associated with building, maintaining and updating a large computing facility. In the past, colos were often used by private enterprises for disaster recovery. Today, colos are especially popular with cloud service providers.

For some organizations, colocation may be an ideal solution, but there can be downsides to this approach. Distance can translate into increased travel costs when equipment needs to be touched manually and colo customers can find themselves locked into long-term contracts, which may prevent them from re-negotiating rates when prices fall. It is important for an organization to closely examine their colo’s service level agreements (SLAs ) so as not to be surprised by hidden charges.

Cloud vs. Data Center: What’s the difference?

Is a cloud a data center? Is a data center a cloud? Or are they two completely different things?

The terms cloud and data center may sound like interchangeable technical jargon or trendy buzz words referring to the same infrastructure, but the two computing systems have less in common than the fact that they both store data.

The main difference between a cloud and a data center is that a cloud is an off-premise form of computing that stores data on the Internet, whereas a data center refers to on-premise hardware that stores data within an organization s local network. While cloud services are outsourced to third-party cloud providers who perform all updates and ongoing maintenance, data centers are typically run by an in-house IT department .

Although both types of computing systems can store data, as a physical unit, only a data center can store servers and other equipment. As such, cloud service providers use data centers to house cloud services and cloud-based resources. For cloud-hosting purposes, vendors also often own multiple data centers in several geographic locations to safeguard data availability during outages and other data center failures.

For companies considering whether or not to use cloud computing versus staying with or building their own data center, there are three primary factors affecting their decision: their business needs, data security and system costs.

Does your business need a cloud or a data center?

A data center is ideal for companies that need a customized, dedicated system that gives them full control over their data and equipment. Since only the company will be using the infrastructure s power, a data center is also more suitable for organizations that run many different types of applications and complex workloads. A data center, however, has limited capacity — once you build a data center, you will not be able to change the amount of storage and workload it can withstand without purchasing and installing more equipment.

On the other hand, a cloud system is scalable to your business needs. It has potentially unlimited capacity, based on your vendor s offerings and service plans. One disadvantage of the cloud is that you will not have as much control as you would a data center, since a third party is managing the system. Furthermore, unless you have a private cloud within the company network, you will be sharing resources with other cloud users in your provider s public cloud .

Cloud security vs. data center security

Because the cloud is an external form of computing, it may be less secure or take more work to secure than a data center. Unlike data centers, where you are responsible for your own security, you will be entrusting your data to a third-party provider that may or may not have the most up-to-date security certifications. If your cloud resides on several data centers in different locations, each location will also need the proper security measures.

A data center is also physically connected to a local network, which makes it easier to ensure that only those with company-approved credentials and equipment can access stored apps and information. The cloud, however, is accessible by anyone with the proper credentials anywhere that there is an Internet connection. This opens a wide array of entry and exit points, all of which need to be protected to make sure that data transmitted to and from these points are secure.

Cloud vs. data center costs

For most small businesses, the cloud is a more cost-effective option than a data center. Because you will be building an infrastructure from the ground up and will be responsible for your own maintenance and administration, a data center takes much longer to get started and can cost businesses $10 million to $25 million per year to operate.

Unlike a data center, cloud computing does not require time or capital to get up and running. Instead, most cloud providers offer a range of affordable subscription plans to meet your budget and scale the service to your performance needs. Whereas data centers take time to build, depending on your provider, cloud services are available for use almost immediately after registration.

Hadoop – MapReduce

MapReduce is a framework using which we can write applications to process huge amounts of data, in parallel, on large clusters of commodity hardware in a reliable manner.

What is MapReduce?

MapReduce is a processing technique and a program model for distributed computing based on java. The MapReduce algorithm contains two important tasks, namely Map and Reduce. Map takes a set of data and converts it into another set of data, where individual elements are broken down into tuples (key/value pairs). Secondly, reduce task, which takes the output from a map as an input and combines those data tuples into a smaller set of tuples. As the sequence of the name MapReduce implies, the reduce task is always performed after the map job.

The major advantage of MapReduce is that it is easy to scale data processing over multiple computing nodes. Under the MapReduce model, the data processing primitives are called mappers and reducers. Decomposing a data processing application into mappers and reducers is sometimes nontrivial. But, once we write an application in the MapReduce form, scaling the application to run over hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of machines in a cluster is merely a configuration change. This simple scalability is what has attracted many programmers to use the MapReduce model.

The Algorithm

Generally MapReduce paradigm is based on sending the computer to where the data resides!

MapReduce program executes in three stages, namely map stage, shuffle stage, and reduce stage.

Map stage. The map or mapper’s job is to process the input data. Generally the input data is in the form of file or directory and is stored in the Hadoop file system (HDFS). The input file is passed to the mapper function line by line. The mapper processes the data and creates several small chunks of data.

Reduce stage. This stage is the combination of the Shuffle stage and the Reduce stage. The Reducer’s job is to process the data that comes from the mapper. After processing, it produces a new set of output, which will be stored in the HDFS.

During a MapReduce job, Hadoop sends the Map and Reduce tasks to the appropriate servers in the cluster.

The framework manages all the details of data-passing such as issuing tasks, verifying task completion, and copying data around the cluster between the nodes.

Most of the computing takes place on nodes with data on local disks that reduces the network traffic.

After completion of the given tasks, the cluster collects and reduces the data to form an appropriate result, and sends it back to the Hadoop server.

Inputs and Outputs (Java Perspective)

The MapReduce framework operates on key, value pairs, that is, the framework views the input to the job as a set of key, value pairs and produces a set of key, value pairs as the output of the job, conceivably of different types.

The key and the value classes should be in serialized manner by the framework and hence, need to implement the Writable interface. Additionally, the key classes have to implement the Writable-Comparable interface to facilitate sorting by the framework. Input and Output types of a MapReduce job: (Input) k1, v1 – map – k2, v2 – reduce – k3, v3 (Output).

If the above data is given as input, we have to write applications to process it and produce results such as finding the year of maximum usage, year of minimum usage, and so on. This is a walkover for the programmers with finite number of records. They will simply write the logic to produce the required output, and pass the data to the application written.

But, think of the data representing the electrical consumption of all the largescale industries of a particular state, since its formation.

When we write applications to process such bulk data,

  • They will take a lot of time to execute.
  • There will be a heavy network traffic when we move data from source to network server and so on.

To solve these problems, we have the MapReduce framework.

The above data is saved as sample.txt and given as input. The input file looks as shown below.

Save the above program as ProcessUnits.java. The compilation and execution of the program is explained below.

Compilation and Execution of Process Units Program

Let us assume we are in the home directory of a Hadoop user (e.g. /home/hadoop).

Follow the steps given below to compile and execute the above program.

Step 1

The following command is to create a directory to store the compiled java classes.

Step 2

Download Hadoop-core-1.2.1.jar, which is used to compile and execute the MapReduce program. Visit the following link http://mvnrepository.com/artifact/org.apache.hadoop/hadoop-core/1.2.1 to download the jar. Let us assume the downloaded folder is /home/hadoop/.

Step 3

The following commands are used for compiling the ProcessUnits.java program and creating a jar for the program.

Step 4

The following command is used to create an input directory in HDFS.

Step 5

The following command is used to copy the input file named sample.txt in the input directory of HDFS.

Step 6

The following command is used to verify the files in the input directory.

Step 7

The following command is used to run the Eleunit_max application by taking the input files from the input directory.

Wait for a while until the file is executed. After execution, as shown below, the output will contain the number of input splits, the number of Map tasks, the number of reducer tasks, etc.

Step 8

The following command is used to verify the resultant files in the output folder.

Step 9

The following command is used to see the output in Part-00000 file. This file is generated by HDFS.

Below is the output generated by the MapReduce program.

Step 10

The following command is used to copy the output folder from HDFS to the local file system for analyzing.

Important Commands

All Hadoop commands are invoked by the $HADOOP_HOME/bin/hadoop command. Running the Hadoop script without any arguments prints the description for all commands.

National Poison Data System

NPDS has more than 62 million exposure case records and product-specific data about more than 420,000 products going back to 1983. NPDS can track poison exposure outbreaks across the country and in many situations can initially detect them by automatically applying analysis algorithms or by using a methodological manual search paradigm in analyzing exposure call volume and clinical effect trends. These methods can be utilized for all common poisonings and toxic environmental concerns, as well as a wide variety of non-common occurrences ranging from food or drug contamination to biological warfare agents. The intent of these ongoing toxicosurveillance activities is to isolate and focus on events of public health significance.

Case data are continually uploaded to NPDS from all AAPCC member poison centers currently every eight minutes, providing a near real-time snapshot of poisoning conditions nationwide.

All AAPCC member poison centers use electronic health record collection systems with mandatory common data elements and reporting requirements. During normal AAPCC member poison center operations, data are entered by staff in real-time as cases are being managed.

Bavaria Yachts was founded in the early 1970s and initially built quite small numbers of small to mid-sized yachts. Most early Bavarias were quite expensive when new, with quality hand-built interiors. As the company expanded the size and range of yachts built increased, and they started to separate out their products into definite ranges – those marked E for exclusive remaining better fitted out, with lead keels, whilst the other ranges included S – Sport or H – Holiday – the latter being built to a lower price and aimed at the charter market. By the mid-1990s Bavaria had given up the early high quality fit-outs, and was firmly into mass production, turning out large numbers of boats at prices other builders were struggling to match. Modern Bavarias may no longer have hand-crafted interiors with lots of solid wood, but the boats are well enough put together to survive the hard life of charter and sailing schools, and offer the private buyer a lot of boat for the money.

Benjamin B n teau set up a boatyard in 1884, initially building sailing fishing boats, and moving on to motorised boats as sail gave way to steam. In the 1960s the company, still with family members in control, started building yachts, and became a major producer in Europe. In 1986 Beneteau opened a factory in the USA, and between 1995 and 1997 took over Jeanneau, Lagoon catamarans, and Henri Wauquiez yachtbuilders, though Wauquiez was sold off again a few years later. As well as building yachts, Beneteau have for some time also been producing prefabricated mobile homes – the two production skills being in some ways similar. For about 15 years Beneteau’s ranges of sailing yachts have been split into First (racing style), Oceanis (cruisers), and Cyclades (lower cost cruisers for the charter market), to which the innovative Sense range of larger cruisers has recently been added.

In the EAC, navigate to Compliance management Data loss prevention, and then click Add Data loss prevention policy example.

On the Create a new DLP policy from a template page, complete the following fields:

Name Add a name that will distinguish this policy from others.

Description Add an optional description that summarizes this policy.

Choose a template Select the appropriate template to begin creating a new policy.

More options Select the mode or state. The new policy is not fully enabled until you specify that it should be. The default mode for a policy is test without notifications.

Click Save to finish creating the policy.

You can modify policies by editing the rules within them once the policy has been saved in your Exchange 2013 environment. An example rule change might include making specific people exempt from a policy or sending a notice and blocking message delivery if a message is found to have sensitive content. For more information about editing policies and rules, see Manage DLP policies.

You have to navigate to the specific policy’s rule set on the Edit DLP policy page and use the tools available on that page in order to change a DLP policy you have already created in Exchange 2013.

Some policies allow the addition of rules that invoke RMS for messages. You must have RMS configured on the Exchange server before adding the actions to make use of these types of rules.

For any of the DLP policies, you can change the rules, actions, exceptions, enforcement time period or whether other rules within the policy are enforced and you can add your own custom conditions for each.

Online backup services are not created equal when it comes to data security . The strongest security is “zero knowledge” encryption. It encrypts your data using a unique encryption key that only you possess; nobody, including you, can access your account without this key.

If you lose your encryption key, all the vendor can do is open a new account for you. This might sound scary, but giving your vendor access to your data requires a level of trust that may not be warranted and also leaves you open to government searches. What’s the best way to protect your unique encryption key? Write it down and lock it in a safe place.

Good features to consider: cross-platform client software, support for multiple filesystems, and sharing and file sync across multiple devices and users. Most backup services use deduplication—meaning they copy identical files only once—to reduce the size of backups. Another way to reduce backup size: record only changes to a file rather than making multiple complete copies.

Backups should be reliable and automatic, and restoring data should be easy. Many services offer 2GB-5GB accounts for free. SpiderOak offers group collaboration and enterprise backup, and Kloak, their new service for safely encryption and protecting your social media activities.

SpiderOak is cross-platform and supports efficient online backups, file synchronization across multiple devices, file sharing and remote access from anywhere. Crashplan+ Small Business Online Data Backup Service

Crashplan+ . a moderately-priced online data backup service, offers both home and business plans. The reasonably priced business plans let you either pay $7.49 per-computer for unlimited storage, or pay for a specific amount of storage. The company’s online calculator quickly shows which option is the best deal. The company claims it’s fully committed to the unlimited plans and will not take them away. The Crashplan+ feature set includes backups to local servers or removable media, a 30-day free trial, and HIPAA compliance. The free version backs up data to your removable media or to any servers under your control, but not to Crashplan’s servers.

JungleDisk Small Business Online Data Backup Service

JungleDisk offers zero-knowledge security similar to SpiderOak, and a unique pay-as-you-go pricing structure: you pay exactly for what you use, rather than purchasing fixed blocks of storage sizes. You can choose from two JungleDisk editions: Jungle Disk Workgroup and Jungle Disk Server. Workgroup is designed for a single user using one or more devices. Server comes with server-friendly reporting and remote administration features. The Server edition costs $5 per server per month plus $0.15 per GB. You have a choice of storing your data on Amazon’s S3 cloud service, or on the Rackspace Cloud. Rackspace is a popular and reliable hosting service, and it owns JungleDisk.

Barracuda Small Business Online Data Backup Service

Barracuda Backup Service . a higher-priced option for shops that want more control, flexibility, and comprehensive central administration of multiple locations, offers offsite network backups integrated with local backups.

Offsite backups can be hosted on Barracuda’s cloud infrastructure or mirrored on your own sites, and you can mix-and-match local and remote storage. For example, you might store important files offsite and locally, and less-important files locally only.

You get fine-grained scheduling control—from real-time backups of critcal files to whatever interval you want for other files. Barracuda meets HIPAA and Gramm-Leach-Bliley security requirements.

Start by purchasing a Barracuda backup appliance—a dedicated backup server pre-loaded with backup and monitoring software. Prices start at $999 for the 100GB-capacity 190 model server (250GB raw capacity) and go all the way up to a base price of $135,000 for the model 1090, which has 112 TB raw capacity and about 50 TB of data backup capacity.

Laney joked at Gartner Symposium. though less entertaining and hopefully more informative. (Well, maybe, for this tech crowd.) The presentation was, without question, a master class on the three Vs definition of big data: Data characterized by increasing variety. velocity and volume. It’s a description, by the way, that Laney — who also coined the term infonomics — floated way back in 2001 .

The 55 examples are not intended to intimidate, but instruct. Laney told the audience not to feel overwhelmed, but to home in on the big data case studies that might improve business performance at their own companies: Yes, I know you’re in industry x. but there are tremendous ideas that come from other industries that you need to consider adapting and adopting for your own industry, he said.

Here are 10 of them:

1. Macy’s Inc.and real-time pricing. The retailer adjusts pricing in near-real time for 73 million (!) items, based on demand and inventory, using technology from SAS Institute .

2. Tipp24 AG, a platform for placing bets on European lotteries, and prediction. The company uses KXEN software to analyze billions of transactions and hundreds of customer attributes, and to develop predictive models that target customers and personalize marketing messages on the fly. That led to a 90% decrease in the time it took to build predictive models. SAP is in the process of acquiring KXEN. That’s probably a great move by SAP to fill a predictive analytics gap they’ve long had, Laney said.

3. Wal-Mart Stores Inc.and search. The mega-retailer’s latest search engine for Walmart.com includes semantic data. Polaris. a platform that was designed in-house, relies on text analysis, machine learning and even synonym mining to produce relevant search results. Wal-Mart says adding semantic search has improved online shoppers completing a purchase by 10% to 15%. In Wal-Mart terms, that is billions of dollars, Laney said.

4.Fast foodand video. This company (Laney wasn’t giving up who) is training cameras on drive-through lanes to determine what to display on its digital menu board. When the lines are longer, the menu features products that can be served up quickly; when the lines are shorter, the menu features higher-margin items that take longer to prepare.

5. Morton’s The Steakhouseand brand recognition. When a customer jokingly tweeted the Chicago-based steakhouse chain and requested that dinner be sent to the Newark airport, where he would be getting in late after a long day of work, Morton’s became a player in a social media stunt heard ’round the Interwebs. The steakhouse saw the tweet, discovered he was a frequent customer (and frequent tweeter), pulled data on what he typically ordered, figured out which flight he was on, and then sent a tuxedo-clad delivery person to serve him his dinner. Sure, the whole thing was a publicity stunt (that went viral), but that’s not the point. The question businesses should be asking themselves: Is your company even capable of something like this? Laney said.

6.PredPol Inc.and repurposing. The Los Angeles and Santa Cruz police departments. a team of educators and a company called PredPol have taken an algorithm used to predict earthquakes, tweaked it and started feeding it crime data. The software can predict where crimes are likely to occur down to 500 square feet. In LA, there’s been a 33% reduction in burglaries and 21% reduction in violent crimes in areas where the software is being used.

7. Tesco PLCand performance efficiency. The supermarket chain collected 70 million refrigerator-related data points coming off its units and fed them into a dedicated data warehouse. Those data points were analyzed to keep better tabs on performance, gauge when the machines might need to be serviced and do more proactive maintenance to cut down on energy costs.

8.American Express Co.and business intelligence. Hindsight reporting and trailing indicators can only take a business so far, AmEx realized. Traditional BI [business intelligence] hindsight-oriented reporting and trailing indicators aren’t moving the needle on the business, Laney said. So AmEx started looking for indicators that could really predict loyalty and developed sophisticated predictive models to analyze historical transactions and 115 variables to forecast potential churn. The company believes it can now identify 24% of Australian accounts that will close within the next four months.

9. Express Scripts Holding Co.and product generation. Express Scripts, which processes pharmaceutical claims, realized that those who most need to take their medications were also those most likely to forget to take their medications. So they created a new product: Beeping medicine caps and automated phone calls reminding patients it’s time to take the next dose.

10. InfinityProperty Casualty Corp. anddark data . Laney defines dark data as underutilized information assets that have been collected for single purpose and then archived. But given the right circumstances, that data can be mined for other reasons. Infinity, for example, realized it had years of adjusters’ reports that could be analyzed and correlated to instances of fraud. It built an algorithm out of that project and used the data to reap $12 million in subrogation recoveries.

The 3Vs that define Big Data

As I studied the subject, the following three terms stood out in relation to Big Data.

In marketing, the 4Ps define all of marketing using only four terms.

I claim that the 3Vs above totally define big data in a similar fashion.

These three properties define the expansion of a data set along various fronts to where it merits to be called big data. An expansion that is accelerating to generate yet more data of various types.

Visualize data online

The plot above, using three axes helps to visualize the concept.

The size of available data has been growing at an increasing rate. This applies to companies and to individuals. A text file is a few kilo bytes, a sound file is a few mega bytes while a full length movie is a few giga bytes.

More sources of data are added on continuous basis. For companies, in the old days, all data was generated internally by employees. Currently, the data is generated by employees, partners and customers. For a group of companies, the data is also generated by machines. For example, Hundreds of millions of smart phones send a variety of information to the network infrastructure. This data did not exist five years ago.

More sources of data with a larger size of data combine to increase the volume of data that has to be analyzed. This is a major issue for those looking to put that data to use instead of letting it just disappear.

Peta byte data sets are common these days and Exa byte is not far away.

There is a corollary to Parkinson’s law that states: “Data expands to fill the space available for storage.”

This is no longer true since the data being generated will soon exceed all available storage space.

Initially, companies analyzed data using a batch process. One takes a chunk of data, submits a job to the server and waits for delivery of the result. That scheme works when the incoming data rate is slower than the batch processing rate and when the result is useful despite the delay. With the new sources of data such as social and mobile applications, the batch process breaks down. The data is now streaming into the server in real time, in a continuous fashion and the result is only useful if the delay is very short.

I have not yet determined how data velocity may continue to increase since real time is as fast as it gets. The delay for the results and analysis will continue to shrink to also reach real time.

From excel tables and databases, data structure has changed to loose its structure and to add hundreds of formats. Pure text, photo, audio, video, web, GPS data, sensor data, relational data bases, documents, SMS, pdf, flash, etc etc etc. One no longer has control over the input data format. Structure can no longer be imposed like in the past in order to keep control over the analysis. As new applications are introduced new data formats come to life.

Google uses smart phones as sensors to determine traffic conditions.

In this application they are most likely reading the speed and position of millions of cars to construct the traffic pattern in order to select the best routes for those asking for driving directions. This sort of data did not exist on a collective scale a few years ago.

The 3Vs together describe a set of data and a set of analysis conditions that clearly define the concept of big data.

So what is one to do about this?

So far, I have seen two approaches.

1-divide and concur using Hadoop

2-brute force using an “appliance” such as the SAP HANA

(High- Performance Analytic Appliance)

In the divide and concur approach, the huge data set is broken down into smaller parts (HDFS) and processed (Mapreduce) in a parallel fashion using thousands of servers.

As the volume of the data increases, more servers are added and the process runs in the same manner. Need a shorter delay for the result, add more servers again. Given that with the cloud, server power is infinite, it is really just a matter of cost. How much is it worth to get the result in a shorter time.

One has to accept that not ALL data analysis can be done with Hadoop. Other tools are always required.

For the brute force approach, a very powerful server with terabytes of memory is used to crunch the data as one unit. The data set is compressed in memory. For example, for a Twitter data flow that is pure text, the compression ratio may reach 100:1. A 1TB IBM SAP HANA can then load a data set of 100TB in memory and do analytics on it.

IBM has a 100TB unit for demonstration purposes.

Many other companies are filling in the gap between these two approaches by releasing all sorts of applications that address different steps of the data processing sequence plus the management and the system configuration.

Concept 19 The DNA molecule is shaped like a twisted ladder.

Francis Crick (1916-2004)

Francis Harry Compton Crick was born in a small town near Northampton, England. As a child, Crick was very inquisitive and he read all of the books of Children’s Encyclopedia that his parents bought him. He found the sections that dealt with science most interesting. This interest led to “kitchen” experiments and eventually serious study and a second-class Honours degree in physics at University College. London.

The physics Crick learned in class was already out of date, so he taught himself the rudiments of quantum mechanics while doing graduate research on the viscosity of water. World War II interrupted his graduate studies. During the war, Crick worked for the Admiralty doing mostly research and design on magnetic and acoustic mines.

When the war ended, Crick continued to work at the Admiralty but he knew he did not want to design weapons for the rest of his life. The problem was that he was unsure what he did want to do. In the end, he decided to enter the life sciences. He liked reading, thinking, and talking about the new discoveries being made in the life sciences. Crick found that “what you are really interested in is what you gossip about.” To pursue his interests, Crick visited several labs and scientists. He finally settled in for a two year stint at Strangeways Laboratory where he did work on the effects of magnetism on chick fibroblast cells.

In 1947, armed with this biology experience, Crick joined Max Perutz at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge. Sir Lawrence Bragg was directing a new unit of the Laboratory where they were using X-ray crystallography to study protein structure. Max Perutz was working on the structure of hemoglobin and Crick’s thesis project was on X-ray diffraction of proteins.

In 1951, Francis Crick met James Watson who was visiting Cambridge. Although Crick was twelve years older, he and Watson “hit it off immediately.” Watson ended up staying at Cavendish, and using available X-ray data and model building, the two solved the structure of DNA. The classic paper was published in Nature in April 1953. A flip of the coin decided the order of the names on the paper. Francis Crick, James Watson and Maurice Wilkins shared the 1962 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for solving the structure of DNA. Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin provided some of the X-ray crystallographic data.

After the “double helix” model, there were still questions about how DNA directed the synthesis of proteins. Crick and some of his fellow scientists, including James Watson, were members of the informal “RNA tie club,” whose purpose was “to solve the riddle of RNA structure, and to understand the way it builds proteins.” The club focused on the “Central Dogma” where DNA was the storehouse of genetic information and RNA was the bridge that transferred this information from the nucleus to the cytoplasm where proteins were made. The theory of RNA coding was debated and discussed, and in 1961, Francis Crick and Sydney Brenner provided genetic proof that a triplet code was used in reading genetic material.

For most of his career, Crick was at Cambridge working for the Medical Research Council. In 1976, Crick moved to the Salk Institute in La Jolla where he focused his research on developmental neurobiology. In 1988, he wrote about his experiences in What Mad Pursuit: A Personal View of Scientific Discovery. Crick has been described as having a keen intellect and a dry, British sense of humor.

DNA was first crystallized in the late 70’s remember, the 1953 X-ray data were from DNA fibers. So, the real “proof” for the Watson-Crick model of DNA came in 1982 after the B-form of DNA was crystallized and the X-ray pattern was solved.

If the DNA of one human cell is stretched out, it would be almost 6 feet long and contain over three billion base pairs. How does all this fit into the nucleus of one cell?

The estimated number of U.S. residents in 2011 who said they were Asian or Asian in combination with one or more other races. This group comprised 5.6 percent of the total population.

The percentage of the foreign-born from Asia who are naturalized U.S. citizens.

The number of people age 5 and older who speak Chinese at home. After Spanish, Chinese is the most widely spoken non-English language in the country. Tagalog and Vietnamese also have more than 1 million speakers.

The projected percentage increase between 2008 and 2050 in the population of people who identify themselves as Asian. This compares with a 44 percent increase in the population as a whole over the same period of time.

However, different Asian ethnic groups have different educational attainment levels — 68 percent of Asian Indians, age 25 and older, had a bachelor’s degree or more education and 37 percent had a graduate or professional degree; the corresponding numbers for Vietnamese-Americans were 24 percent and 7 percent, respectively.

Antenna Selection Guide
To find the perfect antenna, first list the RF Channels around Tulsa which you want to watch. The CEA. Consumer Electronics Association, and NAB. National Association of Broadcasters, created the AntennaWeb to help you with the rest. Free! An example of how it works is presented below.

NOTE that all TV stations are transmitting on different channels now. To avoid confusion, however, the new tuners and converter boxes allow a station to keep its old channel number while automatically switching you to its new RF Channel. Some of the new RF Channels are VHF but most are UHF.

RF Channels on your list numbered less than 14 are VHF. They need a broader antenna than UHF channels; the ones numbered 14 and up. Since HDTV is 91% UHF, you probably won’t need to use a broad antenna.

Most need an Indoor Antenna. They work just fine with older TVs using a converter box, and with all new TVs. You’ll need to use an Outdoor Antenna if you’re more than 15 miles from stations’ towers, but most towers are clustered near town and are very powerful.

What’s important is to get-a-feel for the distances and directions to desirable stations’ towers (under “Dist” and “Azimuth” above). Let’s select CBS, ABC, FOX, NBC and PBS Networks, all of which are farther than 15 miles away. We’ll need to use an Outdoor Antenna to receive them. Fortunately, station towers are clustered in most cities – East of us in our example.

Antenna Color Codes
Color Codes represent an antenna’s reception strength. Within 15 miles of stations an Indoor Antenna can be used (in the Yellow, Green and Light Green Zones). Farther away you’ll need to use an Outdoor Antenna. Our Example calls for color codes blue and violet. The stronger violet type will work for both. Since four of our desirable stations’ RF channels are VHF (all but ABC are less than 14), we’ll need a broad UHF/VHF antenna.

With the use of big data becoming more and more important to businesses, it is even more vital for them to find a way to analyze the ever (faster) growing disparate data coursing through their environments and give it meaning.

Getting the Right Information for Your Business

Focusing on the right information by asking what’s important to the business is a key point in obtaining better data context. In a presentation held at TeamQuest ITSO Summit this past June titled “The Data Driven Business of Winning” Managing Director of CMS Motor Sports Ltd. Mark Gallagher, shared how Formula One teams successfully analyze data to ensure the safety of drivers and win races.

Gallagher explained how a team of data engineers, analyzing reams of information in real time, can help make strategic decisions for the business during the race. “In 2014 Formula One, any one of these data engineers can call a halt to the race if they see a fundamental problem developing with the system like a catastrophic failure around the corner.”

It comes down to the data engineers looking for anomalies. “99% of the information we get, everything is fine,” Gallagher said. “We’re looking for the data that tells us there’s a problem or that tells us there’s an opportunity.” In a nutshell, it’s about finding the anomalies that matter, in the context of the business problem being managed.

A Formula One driver’s steering wheel is basically a laptop, providing him with the data needed to make the best decision available. Drivers can scroll through a 10-point menu while driving and adjust parameters that affect the performance of the vehicle. This happens because the driver is able to get to the right data when needed to get a desired outcome.

Using Avro in MapReduce Jobs With Hadoop, Pig, Hive

Apache Avro is a very popular data serialization format in the Hadoop technology stack. In this article I show code examples of MapReduce jobs in Java, Hadoop Streaming, Pig and Hive that read and/or write data in Avro format. We will use a small, Twitter-like data set as input for our example MapReduce jobs.

The latest version of this article and the corresponding code examples are available at avro-hadoop-starter on GitHub.

Requirements

The examples require the following software versions:

  • Gradle 1.3+ (only for the Java examples)
  • Java JDK 7 (only for the Java examples)
    • It is easy to switch to JDK 6. Mostly you will need to change the sourceCompatibility and targetCompatibility parameters in build.gradle from 1.7 to 1.6. But since there are a couple of JDK 7 related gotchas (e.g. problems with its new bytecode verifier) that the Java example code solves I decided to stick with JDK 7 as the default.
  • Hadoop 2.x with MRv1 (not MRv2/YARN)
    • Tested with Cloudera CDH 4.3
  • Pig 0.11
    • Tested with Pig 0.11.0-cdh4.3.0
  • Hive 0.10
    • Tested with Hive 0.10.0-cdh4.3.0
  • Avro 1.7.4

TweetCount

TweetCount implements a MapReduce job that counts the number of tweets created by Twitter users.

TweetCountTest

TweetCountTest is very similar to TweetCount. It uses twitter.avro as its input and runs a unit test on it with the same MapReduce job as TweetCount. The unit test includes comparing the actual MapReduce output (in Snappy-compressed Avro format) with expected output. TweetCountTest extends ClusterMapReduceTestCase (MRv1), which means that the corresponding MapReduce job is launched in-memory via MiniMRCluster .

MiniMRCluster and Hadoop MRv2

The MiniMRCluster that is used by ClusterMapReduceTestCase in MRv1 is deprecated in Hadoop MRv2. When using MRv2 you should switch to MiniMRClientClusterFactory. which provides a wrapper interface called MiniMRClientCluster around the MiniMRYarnCluster (MRv2):

MiniMRClientClusterFactory: A MiniMRCluster factory. In MR2, it provides a wrapper MiniMRClientCluster interface around the MiniMRYarnCluster. While in MR1, it provides such wrapper around MiniMRCluster. This factory should be used in tests to provide an easy migration of tests across MR1 and MR2.

How Streaming sees data when reading via AvroAsTextInputFormat

When using AvroAsTextInputFormat as the input format your streaming code will receive the data in JSON format, one record (“datum” in Avro parlance) per line. Note that Avro will also add a trailing TAB ( \t ) at the end of each line.

Reading Avro, writing plain-text

The following command reads Avro data from the relative HDFS directory examples/input/ (which normally resolves to /user/ your-unix-username /examples/input/ ). It writes the deserialized version of each data record (see section How Streaming sees data when reading via AvroAsTextInputFormat above) as is to the output HDFS directory streaming/output/. For this simple demonstration we are using the IdentityMapper as a naive map step implementation – it outputs its input data unmodified (equivalently we coud use the Unix tool cat. here). We do not need to run a reduce phase here, which is why we disable the reduce step via the option -D mapred.reduce.tasks=0 (see Specifying Map-Only Jobs in the Hadoop Streaming documentation).

Custom Avro output schema

This looks not to be supported by stock Avro at the moment. A related JIRA ticket AVRO-1067. created in April 2012, is still unresolved as of July 2013.

For a workaround take a look at the section Avro output for Hadoop Streaming at avro-utils. a third-party library for Avro.

Enabling compression of Avro output data (Snappy or Deflate)

If you want to enable compression for the Avro output data, you must add the following parameters to the streaming job:

Be aware that if you enable compression with mapred.output.compress but are NOT specifying an Avro output format (such as AvroTextOutputFormat) your cluster’s configured default compression codec will determine the final format of the output data. For instance, if mapred.output.compression.codec is set to com.hadoop.compression.lzo.LzopCodec then the job’s output files would be compressed with LZO (e.g. you would see part-00000.lzo output files instead of uncompressed part-00000 files).

About Influenza (Flu) Viruses

Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Some people — such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions — are at high risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year.

Seasonal influenza vaccine must be changed each year as the viruses naturally change over time. To avoid catching the flu, get vaccinated each year and practice good hand hygiene. To avoid giving the flu to others, stay home when you are sick, cough or sneeze into tissues and discard them properly, and wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an approved hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.

During October through May, the N.C. Division of Public Health provides weekly updates on the spread of the influenza in North Carolina.

Flu symptoms include:

  • A 100 o F or higher fever or feeling feverish (not everyone with the flu has a fever)
  • A cough and/or sore throat
  • A runny or stuffy nose
  • Headaches and/or body aches
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea (most common in children)

*Influenza-associated Deaths –This number is based on reports submitted by providers to the North Carolina Division of Public Health. The brand names for these are Tamiflu® (generic name oseltamivir), Relenza® (generic name zanamivir), and Rapivab® (generic name peramivir). Tamiflu® is available as a pill or liquid and Relenza® is a powder that is inhaled. (Relenza® is not for people with breathing problems like asthma or COPD, for example.) Rapivab® is administered intravenously by a health care provider.

    Can children take antiviral drugs?

    Yes. Children can take two of the approved antiviral drugs—oseltamivir and zanamivir. Oseltamivir (Tamiflu®) is recommended by the CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for the treatment of influenza in persons aged 2 weeks and older, and for the prevention of influenza in persons aged 3 months and older. Zanamivir (Relenza®) is recommended for the treatment of influenza in persons aged 7 years and older, and for the prevention of influenza in persons aged 5 years and older. Peramivir (Rapivab®) is recommended for use only in adults aged 18 and older.

    Can pregnant women take antiviral drugs?

    Yes. Oral oseltamivir is preferred for treatment of pregnant women because it has the most studies available to suggest that it is safe and beneficial.

    Who should take antiviral drugs?

    It’s very important that antiviral drugs are used early to treat hospitalized patients, people with severe flu illness, and people who are at higher risk for flu complications based on their age or underlying medical conditions.     Microsoft to offer three new ways to store big data on Azure

    Microsoft will soon offer three additional ways for enterprises to store data on Azure, making the cloud computing platform more supportive of big data analysis.

    Azure will have a data warehouse service, a “data lake” service storing large amounts of data, and an option for running “elastic” databases that can store sets of data that vary greatly in size, explained Scott Guthrie, Microsoft executive vice president of the cloud and enterprise group, who unveiled these new services at the company’s Build 2015 developer conference, held this week in San Francisco.

    The Azure SQL Data Warehouse, available later this year, will give organizations a way to store petabytes of data so it can be easily ingested by data analysis software, such as the company’s Power BI tool for data visualization, the Azure Data Factory for data orchestration, or the Azure Machine Learning service.

    Unlike traditional in-house data warehouse systems, this cloud service can quickly be adjusted to fit the amount of data that actually needs to be stored, Guthrie said. Users can also specify the exact amount of processing power they’ll need to analyze the data. The service builds on the massively parallel processing architecture that Microsoft developed for its SQL Server database.

    The Azure Data Lake has been designed for those organizations that need to store very large amounts of data, so it can be processed by Hadoop and other “big data” analysis platforms. This service could be most useful for Internet of Things-based systems that may amass large amounts of sensor data.

    “It allows you to store literally an infinite amount of data, and it allows you to keep data in its original form,” Guthrie said. The Data Lake uses Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), so it can be deployed by Hadoop or other big data analysis systems.

    A preview of the Azure Data Lake will be available later this year.

    In addition to these two new products, the company has also updated its Azure SQL Database service so customers can pool their Azure cloud databases to reduce storage costs and prepare for bursts of database activity.

    “It allows you to manage lots of databases at lower cost,” Guthrie said. “You can maintain completely isolated databases, but allows you to aggregate all of the resources necessary to run those databases.”

    The new service would be particularly useful for running public-facing software services, where the amount of database storage needed can greatly fluctuate. Today, most Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offerings must overprovision their databases to accommodate the potential peak demand, which can be financially wasteful. The elastic option allows an organization to pool the available storage space for all of its databases in such a way that if one database rapidly grows, it can pull unused space from other databases.

    The new elastic pooling feature is now available in preview mode.

    The last few years have witnessed an explosion in the quantity and variety of data available in Africa, produced either as a by-product of digital services, from sensors or measuring devices, satellites and from many other sources. A number of practical fields have been transformed by the ability to collect large volumes of data: for example, bioinformatics with the development of high throughput sequencing technology capable of measuring gene expression in cells, or agriculture with the widespread availability of high quality remote sensing data. For other data sources – such as mobile phone usage records from telecoms operators, which can be used to measure population movement and economic activity – we are just beginning to understand the practical possibilities.

    Data science seeks to exploit advances in machine learning and statistics to make sense of the growing amounts of data available from various sources. In Africa, a number of problems in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, disaster response and wildlife conservation would benefit greatly if domain experts were exposed to data science techniques. These skills would allow practitioners to extract useful information from these abundant sources of raw data

    In the tradition of previous Africa Data Science workshops, a summer school on machine learning and data science will be held prior to the main workshop. This summer school will target graduate students, researchers and professionals working with huge amounts of data or unique datasets.

    The summer school will focus on introductory and advanced lectures in data science and machine learning as well as moderate to advanced practical and tutorial sessions where participants will get their hands wet wrangling and munging datasets and applying cutting edge machine learning techniques to derive inference from the data. Lectures will be given by distinguished world renown researchers and practitioners including researchers from Sheffield University, Amazon, Swansea University Medical School, Facebook, Pulse Lab Kampala, the AI and Data Science (AIR) lab-Makerere University, ARM and Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT).

    The school will also involve end-to-end tutorial sessions from professionals walking the participants through a real data analytics problem from data acquisition to data presentation. To benefit from this course participants are encouraged to have some background in programming particularly programming with Python.

    There are five levels of security required to gain physical access to securely hosted servers and equipment in our data center.

    LEVEL 1: Our data center building is locked from public access. After filing a personal picture with the building access database and a ID verification, each customer will be issued an access card to gain entrance to the building. Each entry is computer logged.

    LEVEL 2: Building Security Guards. Our data center building has security guard on duty 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Building security guards will check data center visitors and monitor building enviroments.

    LEVEL 3: Biometric Hand Scanner. All Cybercon employees and customers are required to pass in order to gain access to our data center.

    LEVEL 4: Once inside the data center floor, all server areas are protected by steel doors and Proximity Security Badge locks. The name, date, and time of every entry is computer logged and can be reviewed at any time.

    LEVEL 5: Locked Cabinets are provided for secure hosted servers. Keys or access codes are required to open and access these cabinets. All keys and access codes are managed by our SMC staff.

    In addition to five levels of physical access security, the entire data center is monitored 24×7 by security cameras and our on-site SMC staff. Cameras are positioned at every entrance, each and every rack isle and customer cage areas. All security cameras are recorded.

    A new study by KLAS suggests that while providers are giving thought to business intelligence needs, they still haven t honed in on favored vendors that they see as holding a leading position in healthcare. That may be, I d suggest, because the industry is still waiting on EMRs that can offer the BI functionality they really need.

    To look at the issue of BI in healthcare, KLAS interviewed execs at more than 70 hospitals and delivery systems with 200 or more beds.

    When asked which BI vendors will stand out in the healthcare industry, 41 percent of respondents replied that they weren t sure, according to a story in Health Data Management .

    Of the other 59 percent who chose a vendor, IBM, SAP, Microsoft and Oracle came up as leaders in enterprise BI applications but none of the above got more than 12 percent of the vote, HDM notes.

    Vendors that did get a nod as standing out in healthcare-specific BI included Explorys, Health Catalyst, McKesson and Humedica (Optum). IBM and Microsoft were also singled out for healthcare use, but respondents noted that their products came with high price tags.

    Meanwhile, QlikTech and Tableau Software were noted for their usability and data visualization tools though lacking in full BI toolsets, according to HDM.

    While these stats are somewhat interesting on their own, they sidestep a very important issue: when will EMRs evolve from transaction-based to intelligence-based systems. After all, an intelligence-based EMR can do more to improve healthcare in context than freestanding BI systems.

    As my colleague John Lynn notes, EMRs will ultimately need to leverage big data and support smart processes, becoming what he likes to call the Smart EMR. These systems will integrate business intelligence natively rather than requiring a whole separate infrastructure to gather insights from the tsunami of patient data being generated today.

    The reality, unfortunately, is that we re a fairly long way away from having such Smart EMRs in place. Readers, how long to you think it will take before such a next-gen EMR hits the market? And who do you think will be the first to market with such a system?

    Four Key Methods to Test Your Disaster Recovery System

    Disaster recovery systems are vital to the health of a company’s IT infrastructure. These systems ensure that if some form of company software failed, there’s a way to fix the problem and not lose or compromise any valuable information. Although, if these systems aren’t consistently tested, they can develop their own faults as new technologies and software are added to a company’s digital infrastructure. Read on as we discuss the value of consistentdisaster recoverytesting and four different methods to ensure quality tests.

    Disaster recovery programs are put in place to safeguard data from being lost during a potential IT disaster. While testing these programs isn’t always the easiest or cheapest thing to do, it’s by far one of the most important. By regularly testing these systems, you’ll be able to identify and fix security or backup problems that could hinder a company’s ability to recover during outages.

    How does one go about testing these systems? TechTarget detailed four of the most effective approaches in a recent article. They are:

    Understand that data is not a static environment.

    Whether it’s a new patch installation or a new complex software setup, every time a change is made to a data center there exists the potential to interfere with current disaster recovery platforms. The constant change to infrastructure is the reason that consistent testing is crucial.

    Evaluate systems and look for single points of failure.

    While it’s wise to review infrastructure from a component level, it’s important to take a look at each individual system as well. As networks are linked around the globe, something as small as one server going down could crash linked computers in cities all over the world.

    Have a mechanism to automatically fail critical workloads over to an alternate data center.

    Many companies have failover capabilities, but those failover systems simply aren’t enough. Companies must utilize a second data center which has enough resources to be able to handle a failover situation. While that sounds like common sense, as businesses scale, many overlook ensuring the second data center is scaled as well. If these extra backup centers don’t have enough resources, the whole disaster recovery system can fail.

    Periodically evaluate bandwidth consumed by offsite storage replication.

    Once a company has created a disaster recovery plan and incorporated a secondary data center, it has most likely created a data replication system that copies data to the secondary data center. As amounts of data increase, so does the amount of bandwidth used to replicate these files. If not properly monitored, that increase could lead to the bandwidth requirements eventually exceeding the link’s capacity and causing a failure in the backup system.

    We ve just released DeepSpar Disk Imager 3, and this latest version brings you many improvements. A major advantage is the ability to image specific directories and files on NTFS partitions. You can now specify what type of files and/or filename masks you want to target and the Imager only processes sectors that belong to those files while skipping all other areas.

    We call this new functionality Imaging Files By MFT Mask. This file imaging method has several advantages (compared to Imaging By File Browsing implemented by other tools): it is much faster and has a lower risk of drive failure. Imaging by MFT Mask uses a drive linear imaging sequence rather than a sequence defined by the file system allocation information. As a result, the heads do not jump back and forth all the time while imaging each file, but instead go from LBA 0 to Maximum LBA and image only fragments of selected data.

    This version of DeepSpar Disk Imager is more visual, interactive and configurable than any DeepSpar product to date and provides dramatically more control than the typical disk imaging tools out there.     SDA: Survey Documentation and Analysis

    SDA is a set of programs for the documentation and Web-based analysis of survey data. SDA was developed, distributed and supported by the Computer-assisted Survey Methods Program (CSM) at the University of California, Berkeley until the end of 2014. Beginning in 2015, CSM is managed and supported by the Institute for Scientific Analysis. a private, non-profit organization, under an exclusive continuing license agreement with the University of California. CSM also develops the CASES software package.

    To see how it all works, test-drive SDA at our demonstration SDA Archive. Browse the documentation for a survey and get fast data analysis results. The SDA Archive includes several datasets, including the General Social Survey (GSS) and the American National Election Study (ANES). You can also look at some other archives that use SDA software.

    SDA Features

    Documentation:

    • Codebooks. SDA can produce both HTML and print-format codebooks. The documentation for each study contains a full description of each variable, indexes to the variables, and links to study-level information.
  • DDI (Data Documentation Initiative) compatibility. SDA programs can produce DDI-format metadata from SDA datasets and from other metadata formats. SDA also provides an online utility that converts DDI metadata to SDA’s own metadata format (DDL).
  • Analysis:

    • Various analysis types are available. frequencies and crosstabulation, comparison of means, correlation matrix, comparison of correlations, multiple regression, logit/probit regression.
  • Fast results. SDA was designed to produce analysis results very quickly — within seconds — even for large datasets with millions of cases and thousands of variables. Although many of our users assume we are using some sort of super computer to achieve these speeds, the secret lies solely in the method of storing the data and the design of the programs. The SDA Archive on our site runs on a low-cost (Intel) Linux server — although versions of SDA are also available for Windows and (Sparc-based) Solaris.
  • Creation of new variables with recode and compute procedures. SDA includes procedures to create new variables based on the content of existing variables through recode or compute specifications.
  • Complex standard errors. Data collected from stratified and/or cluster samples require special procedures to calculate standard errors and confidence intervals. SDA uses those special procedures for percentages, means, differences between means, and regression coefficients.
  • Charts. SDA produces various chart types: bar charts, stacked bar charts, line charts and pie charts.
  • Disclosure specifications for confidentiality. The analysis programs can be configured to suppress output that may compromise the confidentiality of survey respondents. The analysis programs will all read a disclosure configuration file (if one has been created for a study), and will enforce the specifications in that file.

    Other Capabilities:

    • Subsetting. Users can generate and download a customized subset of an SDA dataset. In addition to generating a data file, the subset procedure produces a codebook for the subset and data definitions for SAS, SPSS, Stata and DDI. The subset can include both the original dataset variables and new variables created with recode or compute.
  • Searching. SDA provides searching both within a single study (at the variable level) and across studies (at both the variable and study level).
  • Quick Tables. SDA’s Quick Tables is a simplified interface for obtaining analysis results.

    Content has come a long way since the beginning of the web. Along with the Internet, it too has evolved. In the early days content consisted of words and a few images. Eventually infographics began being used. Next content adapted to the nature of code and became interactive with the user. All of this is the result of data visualization.     The HubSpot Approach

    HubSpot has done a great job visualizing content through infographics even to the point of using data to suggest that companies perform better with HubSpot s marketing automation than they do without it. Rather than simply saying that, they represent it visually in an infographic .

    Wall Street Journal

    Major news publications have seen the importance of data visualization. The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times both have entire sections on their websites dedicated to interactive content.

    The Wall Street Journal created an interactive piece of content called the World Cup of Everything Else.     How To Choose ‘Advanced’ Data Visualization Tools

    Big data and analytical capabilities are the latest coveted features in a fast-growing market for charts, maps, and other ways to visually sort through data for insight.

    There’s data visualization and then there’s “advanced” data visualization, but you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference based on press releases and marketing brochures.

    Just about every business intelligence and analytics vendor out there has released an advanced data visualization module or add-on capability within the last year, with examples including IBM Cognos Insight. Microsoft Power View, MicroStrategy Visual Insight. new data-visualization capabilities bundled with the Oracle Exalytics appliance, SAS Visual Analytics, and SAP Visual Intelligence.

    There’s a rash of new tools because visual discovery is in big demand. IDC’s latest BI and analytics market share stats. released earlier this month, show that Tableau Software, one of the leaders in advanced data visualization, was the fastest-growing vendor in BI in 2011 with a 94.2% increase in software revenue. Tibco Spotfire, another visualization leader, had 23.5% growth.

    Visualization is hot because it makes data-analysis easier. Analysis with more conventional BI query and analysis tools isn’t so easy, according to our 2012 InformationWeek Business Intelligence, Analytics and Information Management Survey. Nearly half (45%) of the 414 respondents to our poll, which was conducted late last year, cited “ease-of-use challenges with complex software/less-technically savvy employees” as the second-biggest barrier to adopting BI/analytics products. That was just behind the biggest barrier, “data quality problems,” cited by 46% or respondents.

    The online dating giant Match.com started using Tableau Software early this year because it wanted to put analysis capabilities “in the hands of our users, not elite analytics or BI experts,” Atin Kulkarni, senior director of strategy and analytics at the Dallas-based company, recently told me.

    Match.com’s Tableau users now include product managers, finance managers, public relations people, and a group in charge of new business at Match.com–about two dozen users in all. Another 12 to 15 BI and analytics professionals and power uses at Match.com also use and appreciate the power of the software to illuminate patterns and trends that aren’t as apparent when presented as data in columns and rows. Match.com is a Microsoft SQL Server Shop and it also uses SAS for advanced analytics, but it chose Tableau with more mainstream users in mind, according to Kulkarni. (Microsoft has since released Power View and SAS has since introduced Visual Analytics Explorer).

    So what’s the difference between “advanced” data visualization and routine sorts of charts and graphs you can do in Excel or Powerpoint? Kulkarni cites the example of geospatial visualization, something Match.com’s new business unit is using to plan offline dating events. Match.com started putting on its own live events such as cooking classes and wine tasting parties as a way to extend its online dating business, but it requires a lot of analysis to plan an event that will draw Match.com users to a particular location.

    With a data visualization superimposed on a map view, Match.com can see “where our members are located, what age group they fall into, and what gender they’re hoping to meet,” says Kulkarni. This helps planners see where concentrations of Match.com registered users and subscribers with the right chemistry can be brought together. With promising zip codes or neighborhoods identified, Match.com planners can then scour sites such as Yelp to spot popular locations to hold such an event. Visual reports can also show how many events the firm has already held in a particular area already, so a map of Manhattan, for example, would include pins representing events held in particular neighborhoods throughout New York City.

    More than a few Tableau rivals would point out that they, too, can do map-based geospatial analyses. BI and analytics vendors are quickly upgrading data-visualization modules, adding this and that charting type to add depth to new products.

    “It’s an arms race where we say we have a tree map and a network graph and a bullet chart, and they’ll say ‘we have this one and that one, and you don’t,'” says Lou Jordano, director of product marketing at Tibco Spotfire.

    How do you separate the “advanced” visualization products from the also rans? In a new report, Forrester analysts Boris Evelson and Noel Yuhanna identify six traits that separate advanced data visualization from static graphs: dynamic data, visual querying, linked multi-dimensional visualization, animation, personalization, and actionable alerts. Dynamic data is the ability to update visualizations as data changes in sources such as databases. With visual querying you can change the query by selecting or clicking on a portion of the graph or chart (to drill down, for example). With multi-dimensional linking, selections made in one chart are reflected as you navigate into other charts. With personalization you can give power users an in-depth view and newbies a simpler view, and you can also control access to data based on user- and role-based access privileges. Visualizations can illuminate important trends and conditions, but what if you don’t see the visualization? Alerting is there as a safeguard, so you can set thresholds and parameters that trigger messages whether you’re interacting with reports or not.

    Forrester’s report, “The Forrester Wave: Advanced Data Visualization Platforms, Q3 2012,” is available online from the SAS Web site. (The report was not sponsored upfront by any vendor, but SAS fared well in the research and purchased download rights for the report, as it often does with Gartner Magic Quadrant reports.) So that’s what sets advanced products apart, but how do you pick the product that’s right for your organization. Forrester’s Wave report puts IBM, Information Builders, SAP, SAS, Tableau, Tibco, and Oracle in the advanced data visualization “leaders” wave. That’s a pretty long list if you ask me, but the report includes a scorecard with individual 0 (weak) to 5 (strong) grades detailing more than 16 product attributes. Tableau, IBM, and SAP score highest on “geospatial integration,” for example, whereas SAS, Tableau, and Tibco Spotfire score highest on visualization “animation,” a technique used, for example, to show changes over time, in relationship to pricing changes, or other variables. Vendors in the “strong performers” wave include Microsoft, MicroStrategy, Actuate, QlikTech, SpagoBI, and Panorama Software.

    I like Forrester Wave reports because the scoring and the weighting of the scores is spelled out in detail, so you can tweak the scoring formula to your own liking. For example, Forrester weighted 50% of its overall score of its assessment of current products and 50% on “Strategy.” Within strategy, 40% of the score was based on “commitment” and 45% was based on “product direction” whereas only 10% was based on “pricing and licensing” and 5% on “transparency.” Personally, I would make the strategy scores account for about 40% of the overall score, and I would raise the weighting of “pricing and licensing,” as I’m guessing customers will care much more about that than “commitment,” whatever that means.

    One topic not covered at length in Forrester’s report is the influence of big data. There’s mention that insights into “deep and broad data sets” are easier to show with data visualization, and SAS and SAP are specifically cited for their big-data visualization capabilities. But there’s no mention of the fact that vendors including SAS, SAP, Tableau, Tibco Spotfire and other have added connectors to Hadoop. Advanced analytic capabilities also get short shrift, mentioned as strengths for data visualization products from IBM, SAS, and Tibco Spotfire, but it’s not treated as categorywide data-visualization attribute on Forrester’s scorecard.

    In my view, big data and analytics are crucial issues that are very much a part of the advanced data-visualization conversation. It’s no coincidence all of the leaders of Forrester’s Wave report have addressed big data, analytics, or both. Why? Because big-data insights and big-data predictions are more easily understood when they’re presented in visual form. I saw this in action myself when I recently witnessed a demo of the SAS LASR Analytic Server and SAS Visual Analytics, the latter being the interface used to explore data on the LASR server. Drilling down on more than a billion rows of data, for example, I saw an analysis of six years’ worth of manufacturing data with a predictive analysis of equipment reliability.     Setting Up an Oracle Linked Server

    SQL Server Linked Servers feature lets you access Oracle data and data from other OLE DB/ODBc compatible data sources from SQL Server. Here are the basic steps for setting up an Oracle linked server.

    1. Install and Configure the Oracle Client Software

    Oracle client software provides the network libraries required to establish connectivity to an Oracle database system.Download the software from http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/index.html. Install the software on your SQL Server system and configure it by using Oracle Net Configuration Assistant.

    2. Create the Linked Server

    Create a linked server by using the T-SQL command

    The name of the linked server is Oracle-LinkedServer.The second parameter, product name (Oracle),is optional.The third parameter specifies the OLE DB provider. MSDAORA is the name of the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle.The final required parameter is the data source name, Oracle Server.

    3. Add Logins for the Linked Server

    Next, provide the SQL Server system with an Oracle login to access the Oracle database by using the sp_addlinkedsrvlogin command

    The first parameter, Oracle Linked Server, specifies the name of the linked server system that you created.The second parameter determines the name of the login to be used on the remote system. A value of True indicates that the current SQL Server login will be used to connect to the linked server. This requires that the logins on the two database servers match, which is typically not the case. A value of False means you ll supply the remote login.

    The third parameter specifies the name of a SQL Server login that this remote login will map to. A value of NULL indicates that this remote login will be used for all connections to the linked Oracle server. If the Oracle system uses Windows authentication, you can use the keyword domain\ to specify a Windows login. The fourth and fifth parameters supply login and password values for the Oracle system.

    4. Query the Linked Server

    To test the connection, run a sample query using the linked server name. Linked servers support updates as well as queries.To access the tables on a linked server, use a four-part naming syntax: linked_server_name.catalog_ name.schema_name.table_name. For example, to query the sample Oracle Scott database, you d enter the statement

    To list your linked servers and show the OLE DB provider that they employ, use the sp_linkedserver stored procedure.

    This status indicates that the data center facilty under scope has been physically inspected for conformity to the design criteria of the ANSI/TIA-942 standard for respective Rating level. This physical inspection covers both an assessment of all related design documents as well as a physical onsite inspection for each area under the scope of the ANSI/TIA-942 standard.

    Non-Certified
    This status indicates that the data center has made a self-declaration about its Rating level and other technical details. As such, no third party has validated the info provided. Customers are advised to validate the info provided.

    TIA-942 standard certification is valid for 3 years. By the end of year-1 and year-2, TIA-942 requires the data center to undergo a surveillance audit. And by end of year-3, to keep its certification valid, the data center has to undergo a recertification audit. In summary:

    • Withdrawn – a withdrawn status means that the 3-year validity period of the certification has expired and the data center either has not taken action to conduct a recertification audit or has not submitted the recertification audit report to TIA-942.org after 90 days period. The certification is considered withdrawn.
