4 Risky Places To Swipe Your Debit Card, debit card loans.#Debit #card #loans

4 risky places to use your debit card

Debit card loans

Debit cards are different

Debit cards and credit cards may look the same, but there’s a major difference. If you spot unauthorized charges on your credit card bill, you can alert the company, decline the charges and not pay the bill, keeping your money safe. With a debit card, your money instantly disappears from your checking account.

Because of that, even clear-cut cases of fraud where victims are protected from liability by consumer protection laws can cause significant hardship.

While fraud is always a possibility, being careful where you use your debit card can help keep your checking account balance out of the hands of thieves. Here’s where to be on your guard with your card.

Are you a victim of fraud? Keep an eye on your credit with free tools from myBankrate today.

Skimming ATMs

The idea that outdoor ATMs are among the most dangerous places to swipe a debit card seems a little bit absurd. But some ATMs present the perfect opportunity for thieves to skim users’ debit cards, says Chris McGoey, a security consultant based in Los Angeles.

Skimming is a method of capturing a bank customer’s card information by running it through a machine that reads the card’s magnetic strip. Those machines are often placed over the real card slots at ATMs and other card terminals.

You’re better off using an ATM inside a retail outlet or other high-trafficked, well-lit place.

Julie Conroy, research director for the retail banking practice at Aite Group, a Boston-based financial services research firm, says even the card terminals that card users must swipe to get into ATM vestibules are being used as a skimming site by criminals. You can spot ATM skimmers by checking for ATM components that look beat-up or askew, she says.

Stealing PINs at gas stations

Gas stations are another danger zone for debit card use. The payment terminals have many of the characteristics card fraudsters love, Conroy says.

“In a gas station where you do have a whole bunch of pay-at-the-pump kinds of things and minimal supervision, it’s pretty easy for a bad guy to put a skimming device on and put a little pinpoint camera there and compromise debit cards that way,” Conroy says. Thieves often use small cameras to capture footage of debit card users entering their PINs so they can have free access to their money.

She says even if the thief doesn’t manage to get your debit card personal identification number, or PIN, from such a device, he still may be able to duplicate the card’s magnetic strip and use it for “sign and swipe” Visa or MasterCard transactions.

With the high potential for fraud in pay-at-the-pump debit transactions, it might make sense to use an alternative such as cash or credit cards the next time you fill up.

The web is a risky place

Debit cards are a convenient way to buy products online, especially for those who don’t like to use credit cards. Unfortunately, the web is one of the most dangerous places to make purchases, Conroy says.

“Online is the No. 1 place where consumers should not use their debit cards,” she says. “It’s susceptible at so many points. The consumer could have malware on their computer, so it could be at their endpoint that the data get compromised. It could be a man-in-the-middle attack where somebody is eavesdropping on their communications via the wireless network. And then at the other end, that data goes into a database at the merchant. As we’ve seen with some of the higher-profile breach events … that data is going to be vulnerable if (they’re) not properly cared for.”

Aside from the potential for hacking at many different points in a transaction, a fundamental problem with using debit cards online is it’s impossible to know who is handling your information.

Debit card loans

Restaurants keep customer data on file

“Would you care for a side of debit card fraud with that?”

Restaurant servers don’t ask that question, but they might as well with the standard practice of taking customers’ debit cards to run them behind closed doors.

“Any place where the card is out of hand” can increase the chances of fraud, says McGoey. “The guy comes to your table, takes your card and disappears for a while, so he or she has privacy,” giving that person the opportunity to copy your card information.

Even restaurants without sit-down service can present a threat. Conroy says using debit cards to order delivery can be risky because cashiers tend to keep customer payment information on file. That may make future orders more convenient, but small businesses rarely take the steps necessary to safeguard payment information, she says.

Can I get a payday loan with only a debit card?

Roberthudson2010

Answered Last

The answer depends on the issuer of the debit card.

Most payday lenders will NOT allow the use of a debit card as the primary source of funds – they usually want a checking/savings account, specifically the one into which your paycheck is deposited.

When you apply for a payday loan, most often times the money is deposited directly into your checking account. therefore, you may use your debit card to access the funds from your checking account like normal.

Some payday lenders will allow you to use a debt card ONLY if the debit card was issued by them (I am only aware of SpeedyCa$h and AccountNow providing the service).

Yes, you can but it depends on the terms and conditions of the lendor company as usually a payday loan is paid through salary checks only.

Payday Loans

A payday advance (also known as a payday loan, cash advance, payroll advance, post-dated check loans, etc) is a financial management tool that can provide a sensible alternative to costly bounced checks, late payment charges and tarnished credit ratings. USA Cash Services offers payday loans from $50 to $1000. There are many different ways to apply for your payday loan. Choose the one that is most convenient for you:

  • Online Payday Loan

We can offer you an online payday loan in many different states. Simply complete our online payday loan application and you can be pre-approved in minutes. Once pre-approved, complete our online payday advance request during our business hours and we will credit your checking account the very same day. Your bank usually will make these funds available to you on the next banking day.

  • Same Day Payday Loan

Need a same day payday loan? Need cash in your hand today? Maybe we do not offer online payday loans in your state. You can always visit one of our many office locations for a same day payday loan.

  • Payday Loan Extensions

In most states you can renew or extend your loan past the original due date through an easy process in which you pay only the current fees, deferring the remaining balance for a new fee. Each state has its own regulations regarding extension limits. You can find your state’s limits by selecting ‘Fees’ from our menu and choose your state.

  • During an extension you will be given the opportunity to make an additional payment toward your principle. Loan fees are calculated on both the length and amount of your loan. Since additional principle payments result in us lending you less money, you will be charged lower fees.

    • What do you do when your car breaks down a week before payday?
  • Your electric bill is due, but you have had some unexpected expenses this month that have drained your checking account.
  • When those unexpected expenses surprise you; be responsible, and prevent your bank from charging you multiple returned check fees.
  • To much month at the end of your money?

We have a solution for you.

Tips for Using a Debit Card Online

    Updated May 09, 2017

Your debit card makes it easy to spend from your checking account, and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere credit cards are accepted. But if you have the option to use a credit card, it’s probably safer to use credit — especially when shopping online.

How to Use a Debit Card Online

    1. Enter the number: Provide your debit card number. which is a 16-digit number if you have Visa, Mastercard, or Discover. Again, you can enter a debit card number even if the merchant asks for a “credit card.”
    1. Verify details: In addition to a card number, most merchants require some sort of verification to reduce the chances of fraud. To do so, enter the security code (usually on the back of your card ) and any address information required – the zip code you enter must match the address on file with your bank.

Unlike purchases at a checkout counter, you will not need to provide your PIN. Online purchases will be processed as a “credit” transaction. and funds will be deducted from your checking account within a few business days.

Debit accepted? There are a few situations when an actual credit card is required (some hotel and rental car agencies will only accept a credit card – or they’ll lock up funds in your checking account ), but debit cards are fine for most transactions. Most online services like iTunes and Netflix will accept either, and they won t know or care that you re using a debit card.

Debit cards are good tools for keeping your costs low and managing your money. They don’t come with the high monthly fees commonly found on credit cards, and they don’t allow you to rack up debt at high interest rates. However, there are benefits to using credit cards.

    When Credit Cards Are Better

Just because you can order online with a debit card online doesn’t mean you should .

Shopping online exposes you to certain risks, especially the risk that your card information will be stolen (that risk also exists in brick-and-mortar stores, but it’s not as easy for hackers to snatch your data).

Direct link to checking: Your debit card pulls funds directly from your checking account. If somebody uses your card number to make fraudulent purchases, your account will get drained. That means it’ll be harder (or impossible) to pay for your expenses, like rent, mortgage, utilities, and food.

If your card information is used fraudulently, you might be protected under federal law, but getting that money back into your bank account is a painful and slow process.

If running out of money in your checking account would be a problem, use a credit card for everyday purchases instead.

Credit cards create a buffer: A credit card creates a debt that you have to repay, but it doesn’t pull money out of your checking account without your knowledge. Thieves spend the card issuer’s money instead of yours, and you can get everything cleared up while keeping your checking account untouched. In other words, credit cards add an extra layer between thieves and your money. What’s more, when your credit card is used fraudulently, your liability is limited to $50, while debit card fraud can cost a lot more (especially if you don’t report fraudulent activity quickly enough).

How to Stay Safe Using Your Debit Card

To reduce the likelihood of problems, follow some basic security rules.

    1. Look for the lock: Make sure you’re shopping on a secure website, especially when it’s time to enter your card number. Look for the lock icon in your browser and pay attention to any security warnings that pop up.
    2. Monitor your account: It’s always a good idea to keep tabs on your money, and it’s especially important if you’re sharing account information online. Check on your accounts regularly (once per month is a bare minimum — more often is better). Set up alerts in your account so you know when money goes out.
    3. Use secure connections: Mobile devices and free Wi-Fi make it easy to get things done. But you never know how secure a public hotspot is. If you’re going to access financial accounts or punch in card numbers, save those tasks for when you’re at home or work and you know your traffic is safe.

    Debit Card Protection

Federal law offers some protection against fraud in your checking account, but you have to report trouble as soon as possible. If you spot the problem and notify your bank, your liability can be limited:

    • You’re liable for up to $50 if you call your bank within two days of fraudulent use.
    • You’re responsible for up to $500 if you report the problem within 60 days.
    • You can be held 100% responsible if you don’t report the problem within 60 days.

Some debit cards come with additional protection from the card issuer, so you’re safer than federal law requires. These services are often called “zero liability” policies or similar.

However, your card still pulls from your checking account – so you’ll have to wait at least a few days to get your money back. If your checking account is running on empty, that’s going to cause a domino effect.

If you re using a prepaid debit card (as opposed to one that came with your checking account), you might have less protection than described above — so be sure to research your card s policies before using it online.

    Is Online Really More Dangerous?

Using a debit card online isn’t the only way to get ripped off. Thieves can steal your card information from brick-and-mortar stores, ATMs, gas pumps, or just about anywhere. They might pull it off with the help of a skimming device or by hacking into a merchant’s payment system remotely.

Given all that, you shouldn’t necessarily fear punching in your debit card number online — shopping is quite safe on secured websites. But if you have the option, a credit card is better for everyday spending (and online purchases) — just be sure to pay the card off every month so you don’t pay finance charges. Especially if you’re not familiar with the merchant or you’re not shopping at a major website, it’s risky to provide any type of card number. If you want to be extra safe, add another layer between you and the merchant and pay with PayPal or a similar (but trustworthy) service.

All students must demonstrate a means of repayment, such as financial aid proceeds or employment income.

Repayment:  The full amount of the $300 loan and accompanying $10 processing fee must be repaid by the date specified on the application/promissory note you sign. If financial aid funds are disbursed while the loan is outstanding, your financial aid funds will immediately repay the loan.
