Distance Learning Doctoral Degree Program in Counseling Psychology

Research online doctoral degree programs in counseling psychology. Find out what you can learn in these courses and what you’ll need in order to participate in online learning to determine if it’s right for you.

Essential Information

A doctoral program in psychology usually requires 5-7 years of schooling beyond the baccalaureate degree. Online doctoral degree programs do not significantly differ in time or curriculum requirements from campus-based programs. However, online programs are typically hybrid in format, combining virtual courses with required campus-based or practical experiences; some programs require a residency.

Doctoral programs in counseling psychology are offered as Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degrees. Applicants need a baccalaureate degree in psychology in order to be considered.

Course Topics

A student earning a doctoral degree in counseling psychology online will be expected to complete classes covering the following topics:

  • Ethical and cultural issues in counseling
  • Addiction theories
  • Counseling techniques
  • Intervention practice
  • Marriage, family and addictions counseling
  • Adolescent and childhood counseling
  • Group therapy
  • Recovery strategies

Students are required to prepare and defend a dissertation based on independent research projects. Since research, statistics and completion of the doctoral dissertation are completed independently, an online delivery method is appropriate for a student working toward a doctoral degree in counseling psychology.

Online Learning, Residency and Practicum Requirements

An online doctoral degree program in counseling psychology also requires students to participate in groups, classes and seminars online. Many distance learning programs require periodic attendance at seminars or orientation sessions held at the main campus. Some Ph.D. programs may require students to spend additional time, up to one year, in residence. In addition, most online doctoral degree programs integrate practicum and internship experiences.

Licensing Requirements

Completion of clinical and internship work is required in order to be eligible for licensure. Graduates need to pass a state licensing exam in order to become clinical psychologists providing counseling services.

Most online doctoral programs in counseling psychology prepare students for licensure through a combination of online courses and in-person internships and/or residencies. Programs usually require completion and defense of a dissertation that includes independent, original research.

Fully Funded PhD Programs in Education

Next in my series on How To Fully Fund Your PhD. I provide a list below of universities that offer full funding to all students admitted to their doctoral programs in education, international education, and educational leadership.

You can find several competitive, external fellowships in the ProFellow database for graduate and doctoral study, but it is useful to seek out PhD programs that offer full funding to all admitted students. When a doctoral program indicates that they provide full funding to their PhD students, in most cases this means they provide each admitted student full tuition and a stipend for living expenses for the four to six year duration of the student’s doctoral studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their doctoral students, which is why I recommend researching the financial aid offerings of all the potential PhD programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad.

Harvard University, Graduate School of Education, PhD in Education (Cambridge, MA): Harvard provides full financial support for PhD students for all five years of the program.

New York University, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development (New York, NY): NYU Steinhardt awards all students (including international students) who are offered full-time admission to our PhD programs a full funding and mentoring package.

Queen s University, School of Graduate Studies, PhD in Education (Ontario, Canada): Queen’s guarantees a minimum funding package currently valued at $18,000 [CAD] per year for fours years for full-time doctoral students; in most cases, funding packages are higher (2011-12 average: $25,800). In addition, Queen’s guarantees an international tuition award (or equivalent award) valued at $5,000 per year for four years for eligible international doctoral students.

University of California Irvine, PhD in Education (Irvine, CA): Effective 2015, all incoming UC Irvine PhD in Education students, including California residents, non-residents, and international students, are offered five years of financial support. Funding includes an academic year stipend or salary, tuition and Student Services Fee waiver, and student health insurance.

University of Colorado, School of Education (Boulder, CO): Admitted doctoral students received four-year funding packages including a stipend and a tuition grant equal to the cost of tuition (in-state and out-of-state).

Very useful information you ve presented here after scouring the internet for weeks. This term fully funded was the buzzword I was missing. Now to find fully funded PhD programs that can be done online with minimal residency so I don t have to uproot my family and my current teaching load. Are there
any online programs that are fully funded?

Tracy, I have not been able to find any so far. Online programs are typically offered by for-profit universities. However, if you can find a 3-year PhD position that does not require the normal 2 years of course (typically you need to have a Master s/postgraduate degree already to be eligible for these), you may not need to be in-resident. These programs are more common in Europe, Asia and Oceania. Thus you might spend some time abroad to get started, and then could complete your PhD dissertation remotely. This would require negotiation with your supervisors.

Try Colorado State University, their program is fairly new (10) but they have some online portion and a short residency program.

Professional Degree vs. Academic Graduate Degree

The following was obtained from the New York State education website. It makes a distinction between “graduate academic degrees and “professional degrees.” I believe this information is helpful for those people who do not know the difference.

Academic degrees. Graduate academic degree programs consist of advanced studies in an academic discipline. They must have as their purpose contributions to knowledge of the subject matter, rather than specific applications of knowledge to professional practices. Master’s degree programs of this type may be terminal in nature or may also provide an introduction to research and advanced study at the doctoral level. Such programs emphasize theory and are not primarily designed as preparation for professional careers. Graduate academic degree programs leading to the doctorate shall include research that prepares the graduate student for a life of scholarship in an academic discipline. The following are the only degrees appropriately conferred upon the completion of an academic graduate program:
Master of Arts (A.M. or M.A.)
Master of Science (M.S.)
Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.)
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

The Master of Philosophy is intermediate between the other academic master s degrees and the Doctor of Philosophy. It is awarded to candidates in one of the institution’s own Ph.D. programs and for completion of all requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation.

Professional degrees. Graduate professional degree programs must be comprised of advanced studies in professional or vocational fields. While they may have strong theoretical underpinnings, they must have as their primary purpose knowledge for application in professional practice. Master’s degree programs of this type are primarily terminal in nature. They may serve as preparation for advanced studies at the doctoral level, but they shall not be designed primarily for this purpose. The doctorate in such studies is likewise practical, insofar as it prepares the student to train or supervise others in the field, to discover new knowledge that has practical application in the field, or to prepare the student for a life of practice in the student s particular profession. Only the following degrees may be conferred upon the completion of a professionally oriented graduate program:

Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.)
Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)

Thanks for clearing that up MikeU. I was wondering what the difference between a PhD in engineering and a D.Eng was.

On average, professional degree holders earn more income than other degree holders:

Full-time, year-round workers

Professional degree $109,600
Doctoral degree $89,400

Louisiana State University Shreveport is proud to announce that the College of Business, Education, and Human Development offers a Doctorate in Leadership Studies. This doctoral program–the first of its kind to be offered on the Shreveport campus–allows LSU Shreveport to offer the highest level of instruction in a university.

The Leadership Studies Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) degree is not just for educators; just as a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree is not just for philosophers! The Ed.D. degree is an interdisciplinary terminal degree program with the primary purpose of enhancing leadership potential that will support personal and community growth in various human endeavors. Conscientious working professionals who seek to advance their roles as leaders in public, non-profit, or corporate organizations, as well as scholarly opportunities in higher education, will find this degree supports a critical step in attaining their future goals. Some candidates may also extend their learning to engage in entrepreneurial endeavors in related career fields.

The Leadership Studies program will achieve its purpose by fostering scholarly inquiry and a working understanding of the following critical components of leadership: leadership theory with an integrative approach; management of complex organizations; diversity and social justice; resource allocation and development; policy analysis and development; power, politics, and influence; and data collection, analysis, and research. The program further supports the enhancement of leadership potential by including at least five classes in personally chosen supporting areas selected from Organizational Administration, Educational Leadership, Educational Technology, Healthcare Administration, Higher Education Leadership, History, Psychology/Counseling, Public Health, Non-profit Administration, or other approved content areas. The Leadership Studies program will provide working professionals with relevant and practical research skills to utilize leadership theories for transformational change, and knowledge to identify and solve problems of practice through collaboration with key stakeholders. Candidates will be given the opportunity to develop these attributes through content courses, research courses, personal research, and a practical internship.

The program, designed to accommodate working adults with other full-time obligations, can be completed within four years by taking two intensive courses per semester, year-round for a total of 63 semester hours. Candidates for this type of program are typically working professionals who have a master’s degree with at least three years of work experience. Students take a prescribed set of courses and academic experiences in a cohort model, beginning in the fall semester. Recognizing the intensity of doctoral study while supporting both integration and application of content, the program delivers the doctoral courses during the first two years in a hybrid delivery system of approximately 70% face-to-face class meetings, and the rest online. The face-to-face class meetings are enhanced by online discussion forums, guest speakers with expertise in the field, and study group sessions with cohort members. During the third year, students specialize in a supporting area of interest for which there are several 100% online options as well as face-to-face options. The fourth year is taken as independent research under the guidance of a dissertation advisor.

  • Length of program: 63 semester hours
  • Core courses: 36 semester hours
  • Personalized supporting area courses (with advisor approval): 15 semester hours
  • Workplace internship related to the supporting area: 3 semester hours
  • Dissertation course enrollment: at least 9 semester hours
  • New cohorts begin in the fall semester each year.
