Distance Learning Doctoral Degree Program in Counseling Psychology

Research online doctoral degree programs in counseling psychology. Find out what you can learn in these courses and what you’ll need in order to participate in online learning to determine if it’s right for you.

Essential Information

A doctoral program in psychology usually requires 5-7 years of schooling beyond the baccalaureate degree. Online doctoral degree programs do not significantly differ in time or curriculum requirements from campus-based programs. However, online programs are typically hybrid in format, combining virtual courses with required campus-based or practical experiences; some programs require a residency.

Doctoral programs in counseling psychology are offered as Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degrees. Applicants need a baccalaureate degree in psychology in order to be considered.

Course Topics

A student earning a doctoral degree in counseling psychology online will be expected to complete classes covering the following topics:

  • Ethical and cultural issues in counseling
  • Addiction theories
  • Counseling techniques
  • Intervention practice
  • Marriage, family and addictions counseling
  • Adolescent and childhood counseling
  • Group therapy
  • Recovery strategies

Dissertation

Students are required to prepare and defend a dissertation based on independent research projects. Since research, statistics and completion of the doctoral dissertation are completed independently, an online delivery method is appropriate for a student working toward a doctoral degree in counseling psychology.

Online Learning, Residency and Practicum Requirements

An online doctoral degree program in counseling psychology also requires students to participate in groups, classes and seminars online. Many distance learning programs require periodic attendance at seminars or orientation sessions held at the main campus. Some Ph.D. programs may require students to spend additional time, up to one year, in residence. In addition, most online doctoral degree programs integrate practicum and internship experiences.

Licensing Requirements

Completion of clinical and internship work is required in order to be eligible for licensure. Graduates need to pass a state licensing exam in order to become clinical psychologists providing counseling services.

Most online doctoral programs in counseling psychology prepare students for licensure through a combination of online courses and in-person internships and/or residencies. Programs usually require completion and defense of a dissertation that includes independent, original research.

The Education focus area helps prepare students to research, design, implement, and evaluate educational programs for nurses, including formal academic programs that lead to a degree or certificate and more informal continuing education programs designed to meet individual learning needs.

Through the Healthcare Administration focus area, you can prepare to manage and implement healthcare programs and services by applying best practices in leadership, ethics, and strategic planning. Explore principles that impact healthcare decisions and practice as well as the theoretical foundations of governance and public policy.

Design an interdisciplinary focus area that reflects your professional goals and interests, broadens your perspectives, or enables you to work more effectively with diverse populations and teams. Choose courses from the four other PhD in Nursing focus areas: Education, Healthcare Administration, Leadership, and Public Health Policy.

Become a nurse leader who can work effectively with diverse workforces and communities in a variety of political and economic settings. Through the Leadership focus area, you can build competencies in organizational change management, team building, mediation, collaboration, and systems thinking and planning.

Learn to design, implement, manage, and influence public health policy at the local, state, and federal levels. Explore how data is used to form policy recommendations, examine microeconomic and macroeconomic models, understand the influence of public finance on policy decisions, and discover the tools and techniques used to evaluate the impact of social programs.

This research-focused program offers interdisciplinary coursework that prepares you to lead and collaborate with diverse healthcare professionals in a wide range of settings, including hospitals, universities, and health-related industries. Our program can prepare you to:

  • Conduct scientific research at the highest levels in your field

Fully Funded PhD Programs in Education

Feb 07, 2013 • Views 448,064

Last updated May 1, 2017

Next in my series on How To Fully Fund Your PhD. I provide a list below of universities that offer full funding to all students admitted to their doctoral programs in education, international education, and educational leadership.

You can find several competitive, external fellowships in the ProFellow database for graduate and doctoral study, but it is useful to seek out PhD programs that offer full funding to all admitted students. When a doctoral program indicates that they provide full funding to their PhD students, in most cases this means they provide each admitted student full tuition and a stipend for living expenses for the four to six year duration of the student’s doctoral studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their doctoral students, which is why I recommend researching the financial aid offerings of all the potential PhD programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad.

Harvard University, Graduate School of Education, PhD in Education (Cambridge, MA): Harvard provides full financial support for PhD students for all five years of the program.

New York University, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development (New York, NY): NYU Steinhardt awards all students (including international students) who are offered full-time admission to our PhD programs a full funding and mentoring package.

Queen s University, School of Graduate Studies, PhD in Education (Ontario, Canada): Queen’s guarantees a minimum funding package currently valued at $18,000 [CAD] per year for fours years for full-time doctoral students; in most cases, funding packages are higher (2011-12 average: $25,800). In addition, Queen’s guarantees an international tuition award (or equivalent award) valued at $5,000 per year for four years for eligible international doctoral students.

University of California Irvine, PhD in Education (Irvine, CA): Effective 2015, all incoming UC Irvine PhD in Education students, including California residents, non-residents, and international students, are offered five years of financial support. Funding includes an academic year stipend or salary, tuition and Student Services Fee waiver, and student health insurance.

University of Colorado, School of Education (Boulder, CO): Admitted doctoral students received four-year funding packages including a stipend and a tuition grant equal to the cost of tuition (in-state and out-of-state).

Very useful information you ve presented here after scouring the internet for weeks. This term fully funded was the buzzword I was missing. Now to find fully funded PhD programs that can be done online with minimal residency so I don t have to uproot my family and my current teaching load. Are there
any online programs that are fully funded?

Tracy, I have not been able to find any so far. Online programs are typically offered by for-profit universities. However, if you can find a 3-year PhD position that does not require the normal 2 years of course (typically you need to have a Master s/postgraduate degree already to be eligible for these), you may not need to be in-resident. These programs are more common in Europe, Asia and Oceania. Thus you might spend some time abroad to get started, and then could complete your PhD dissertation remotely. This would require negotiation with your supervisors.

Try Colorado State University, their program is fairly new (10) but they have some online portion and a short residency program.

Professional Degree vs. Academic Graduate Degree

The following was obtained from the New York State education website. It makes a distinction between “graduate academic degrees and “professional degrees.” I believe this information is helpful for those people who do not know the difference.

Academic degrees. Graduate academic degree programs consist of advanced studies in an academic discipline. They must have as their purpose contributions to knowledge of the subject matter, rather than specific applications of knowledge to professional practices. Master’s degree programs of this type may be terminal in nature or may also provide an introduction to research and advanced study at the doctoral level. Such programs emphasize theory and are not primarily designed as preparation for professional careers. Graduate academic degree programs leading to the doctorate shall include research that prepares the graduate student for a life of scholarship in an academic discipline. The following are the only degrees appropriately conferred upon the completion of an academic graduate program:
Master of Arts (A.M. or M.A.)
Master of Science (M.S.)
Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.)
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

The Master of Philosophy is intermediate between the other academic master s degrees and the Doctor of Philosophy. It is awarded to candidates in one of the institution’s own Ph.D. programs and for completion of all requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation.

Professional degrees. Graduate professional degree programs must be comprised of advanced studies in professional or vocational fields. While they may have strong theoretical underpinnings, they must have as their primary purpose knowledge for application in professional practice. Master’s degree programs of this type are primarily terminal in nature. They may serve as preparation for advanced studies at the doctoral level, but they shall not be designed primarily for this purpose. The doctorate in such studies is likewise practical, insofar as it prepares the student to train or supervise others in the field, to discover new knowledge that has practical application in the field, or to prepare the student for a life of practice in the student s particular profession. Only the following degrees may be conferred upon the completion of a professionally oriented graduate program:

Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.)
Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)
Master of Architecture (M.Arch.)

Thanks for clearing that up MikeU. I was wondering what the difference between a PhD in engineering and a D.Eng was.

On average, professional degree holders earn more income than other degree holders:

Full-time, year-round workers

Professional degree $109,600
Doctoral degree $89,400

Doctoral Program in Leadership Studies

Leadership Studies Doctoral Program

Louisiana State University Shreveport is proud to announce that the College of Business, Education, and Human Development offers a Doctorate in Leadership Studies. This doctoral program–the first of its kind to be offered on the Shreveport campus–allows LSU Shreveport to offer the highest level of instruction in a university.

The Leadership Studies Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) degree is not just for educators; just as a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree is not just for philosophers! The Ed.D. degree is an interdisciplinary terminal degree program with the primary purpose of enhancing leadership potential that will support personal and community growth in various human endeavors. Conscientious working professionals who seek to advance their roles as leaders in public, non-profit, or corporate organizations, as well as scholarly opportunities in higher education, will find this degree supports a critical step in attaining their future goals. Some candidates may also extend their learning to engage in entrepreneurial endeavors in related career fields.

The Leadership Studies program will achieve its purpose by fostering scholarly inquiry and a working understanding of the following critical components of leadership: leadership theory with an integrative approach; management of complex organizations; diversity and social justice; resource allocation and development; policy analysis and development; power, politics, and influence; and data collection, analysis, and research. The program further supports the enhancement of leadership potential by including at least five classes in personally chosen supporting areas selected from Organizational Administration, Educational Leadership, Educational Technology, Healthcare Administration, Higher Education Leadership, History, Psychology/Counseling, Public Health, Non-profit Administration, or other approved content areas. The Leadership Studies program will provide working professionals with relevant and practical research skills to utilize leadership theories for transformational change, and knowledge to identify and solve problems of practice through collaboration with key stakeholders. Candidates will be given the opportunity to develop these attributes through content courses, research courses, personal research, and a practical internship.

The program, designed to accommodate working adults with other full-time obligations, can be completed within four years by taking two intensive courses per semester, year-round for a total of 63 semester hours. Candidates for this type of program are typically working professionals who have a master’s degree with at least three years of work experience. Students take a prescribed set of courses and academic experiences in a cohort model, beginning in the fall semester. Recognizing the intensity of doctoral study while supporting both integration and application of content, the program delivers the doctoral courses during the first two years in a hybrid delivery system of approximately 70% face-to-face class meetings, and the rest online. The face-to-face class meetings are enhanced by online discussion forums, guest speakers with expertise in the field, and study group sessions with cohort members. During the third year, students specialize in a supporting area of interest for which there are several 100% online options as well as face-to-face options. The fourth year is taken as independent research under the guidance of a dissertation advisor.

  • Length of program: 63 semester hours
  • Core courses: 36 semester hours
  • Personalized supporting area courses (with advisor approval): 15 semester hours
  • Workplace internship related to the supporting area: 3 semester hours
  • Dissertation course enrollment: at least 9 semester hours
  • New cohorts begin in the fall semester each year.

Online Doctorate Programs

CalSouthern’s Online Doctoral Degree Programs

CalSouthern’s Online Doctoral Degree Programs

You’ll find exceptional online doctorate programs in CalSouthern’s Schools of Business, Law and Psychology. Each offers an applied doctoral degree or a professional doctorate. Unlike academic doctorates (e.g. the PhD), applied or professional doctorates are less oriented toward research and scholarly publication, and more devoted to the advanced, practical application of theory in a professional setting.

The Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is an excellent option for business leaders looking to develop knowledge of the highest order in a particular business discipline, and to set themselves apart from other executives in a highly competitive workplace. It’s an extremely personalized and focused program. In fact, up to 25 percent of the program can be devoted to a doctoral project of your own selection and corresponding to your particular business interests and areas of expertise—it’s a great way to distinguish yourself as a leading expert in a specific area of interest.

The Juris Doctor (JD) is designed to provide students with the educational foundation and professional training to succeed as a practicing attorney in the state of California. In fact, once you earn your JD degree, you can be eligible to sit for the California Bar Exam. The California Southern University School of Law is registered as an unaccredited correspondence law school with the Committee of Bar Examiners (CBE) of the State Bar of California. This allows graduates of the JD program who have complied with Title 4, Division 1 of the Rules of the State Bar of California (Admissions Rules) to sit for the California Bar Exam.

The CBE requires CalSouthern to refer all current and prospective JD students, as well as applicants, to and current students to required disclosures. Please click here to review the disclosures.

The Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) is the online doctoral degree program in CalSouthern’s School of Behavioral Sciences. Unlike the research-intensive PhD, the PsyD is far more clinically focused. Emphasizing counseling and therapy, the PsyD can prepare learners for virtually any position in any organizational hierarchy within the field of psychology. It can also lead to a career in academics, particularly if the program is clinically focused.

For those looking to practice as a licensed clinical psychologist, CalSouthern’s PsyD meets the educational requirements for licensure in the state of California and numerous other states. (Since states’ policies are subject to change and/or dependent upon the circumstances of each case, each student must confirm with the appropriate regulatory body that CalSouthern’s degree will be accepted in a particular state. For additional information about the PsyD and state licensure, click here .)

Regardless of your area of interest—be it business, law or psychology—CalSouthern offers an online doctoral degree program that is truly exceptional. It’s CalSouthern’s collegial and responsive community of personalized support that distinguishes the university from its peers. It’s the CalSouthern difference and it’ll be apparent from the moment you speak with any of our dedicated education professionals. We urge you to experience it for yourself.

Dr. Carson

Benjamin S. Carson, Sr. M.D. had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. Growing up in a single parent home with dire poverty, poor grades, a horrible temper, and low self-esteem appeared to preclude the realization of that dream until his mother, with only a third-grade education, challenged her sons to strive for excellence. Young Ben persevered and today is an emeritus professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and he has directed pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center for over 29 years. He became the inaugural recipient of a professorship dedicated in his name in May 2008. He is now the Emeritus Benjamin S. Carson, Sr. M.D. and Dr. Evelyn Spiro, R.N. Professor of Pediatric Neurosurgery, having retired on June 30, 2013.

Some career highlights include the first separation of craniopagus (Siamese) twins joined at the back of the head in 1987, the first completely successful separation of type-2 vertical craniopagus twins in 1997 in South Africa, and the first successful placement of an intrauterine shunt for a hydrocephalic twin. Although he has been involved in many newsworthy operations, he feels that every case is noteworthy – deserving of maximum attention. He is interested in all aspects of pediatric neurosurgery and has a special interest in trigeminal neuralgia (severe facial pain) in adults.

Dr. Carson holds more than 60 honorary doctorate degrees. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the Horatio Alger Society of Distinguished Americans, and many other prestigious organizations. He has sat on the board of directors of numerous organizations, including Kellogg Company, Costco Wholesale Corporation, the Academy of Achievement, and is an Emeritus Fellow of the Yale Corporation, the governing body of Yale University. He was appointed in 2004 by President George W. Bush to serve on the President’s Council on Bioethics. He is a highly regarded motivational speaker who has addressed various audiences from school systems and civic groups to corporations and the President’s National Prayer Breakfast.

In 2001, Dr. Carson was named by CNN and TIME Magazine as one of the nation’s 20 foremost physicians and scientists. That same year, he was selected by the Library of Congress as one of 89 Living Legends on the occasion of its 200th anniversary. He is also the recipient of the 2006 Spingarn Medal which is the highest honor bestowed by the NAACP. In February 2008, Dr. Carson was presented with the Ford’s Theatre Lincoln Medal by President George W. Bush at the White House. In June 2008, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by the President, which is the highest civilian honor in the land. He has literally received hundreds of other awards during his distinguished career.

In June 2013, after 40 years of medical endeavors, Carson retired and today serves as Professor Emeritus of Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University.

His first four books, Gifted Hands, THINK BIG, The Big Picture and Take the Risk: Learning to Identify, Choose and Live with Acceptable Risk (January 2008), provide inspiration and insight for leading a successful life. A fifth book, America The Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great. was released in early 2012 and made the New York Times Bestseller List in 2013. His sixth book, One Nation: What We Can All Do To Save America’s Future was released on May 20, 2014 and has also made the New York Times Bestseller List. His seventh book, One Vote: Make Your Voice Heard was released September 22, 2014. His eighth book, You Have a Brain: A Teen’s Guide to T.H.I.N.K. B.I.G.. which encourages young people to aim high, was recently released on February 4, 2015. His ninth book, A More Perfect Union. was released on October 5, 2015.

Dr. Ben and Candy Carson s dream is to name a Carson Scholar in every school within the United States.

In accordance with federal ethics rules, Dr. Carson resigned his positions with the Carson Scholars Fund in March 2017, when he began serving as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

Candy Carson

Mrs. Candy Carson is an author, philanthropist and musician. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Candy grew up in a middle-class family that stressed strong values and hard work. Her parents, a teacher and automobile factory worker, taught her from an early age to always do her best in life.

That mindset led Candy from Detroit to Yale University, where she studied with a music scholarship and got to demonstrate her talents by playing first violin with the Yale Symphony in Austria at a European premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s music.

While in college, Candy met her future husband Ben, and upon graduation, the two married and moved back to Michigan. Candy supported the family while Ben completed his medical degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Over the years, Candy has worked in fields such as editing, trust administration, real estate sales, conducting and music arranging. She has played the violin for orchestras such as the Ann Arbor Symphony and the Nedlands Symphony near Perth, Australia.

Candy’s passion, however, lies first and foremost in fostering a better future for America’s children. That culminated in the co-founding, with her husband Ben, of the Carson Scholars Fund more than 15 years ago. The nonprofit organization seeks to prepare the next generation for leadership and success in life through reading and education.

At first, Candy ran the organization single-handedly. Currently, the organization consists of eleven dedicated staffers, has a presence in all 50 states and has recognized more than 6,600 scholars and installed over 130 Ben Carson Reading Rooms around the country.

Candy and her husband have written three books together, including the New York Times bestseller, America the Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great. and One Nation: What We Can All Do to Save America’s Future. The latter addresses the changing state of the nation and how Americans can work together to ensure abundant opportunities for their children.

In October 2015, Candy and Ben released their third book, A More Perfect Union: What We the People Can Do to Reclaim Our Constitutional Liberties. The book discusses the principles that the Founding Fathers put forth to give ordinary citizens the power to govern their country, and reminds Americans that the Constitution belongs to all of them, not just bureaucrats in Washington.

Candy and Ben have three sons and daughter-in-laws. The recent addition of two granddaughters has given Candy the new name of Mumsee!
