A US education is very expensive. Tuition, room and board at an undergraduate institution will cost from $15,000 to $40,000 a year, depending on the school. A graduate education can be even more expensive.

There is very little financial aid for foreign nationals to study in the US, with the possible exception of citizens of Canada and Mexico. Most grants, scholarships, and loans from public and private sources are restricted to US citizens.

As a result, international students will find very little information about financial aid for international students. This site presents more information about financial aid for international students than any other publication. This information originally appeared as part of the FinAid site.

Below you will find a description of how to access what aid is available, and a discussion of some of the problems you may encounter as you pay for a US education.

US students interested in obtaining funding for study abroad should see FinAid’s Study Abroad and Foreign Study Programs section.

The bottom line is that there is very little financial aid available, and many international students do not study in the US because they cannot afford the expense. This is especially true for undergraduate education.

Private Student Loans for International Students

Financing an education in the United States is difficult, even for a US student. For international students, paying for college in the US is even harder. Almost two-thirds of all students enrolled at private four-year US schools receive loans of some type. US students can receive loans guaranteed by the government (Stafford loans, among others), but these valuable loans are not available to international students. Luckily, private student loans are available to international students on the same terms received by US students.

Before applying for a loan, you should exhaust the following potential funding sources:

1. Apply for international student financial aid from your school. Here’s a searchable list of schools awarding financial aid to international students:

2. Research and apply for international student scholarships on your own:

3. Carefully evaluate how much money you or your family can provide towards your education. Every dollar you can pay directly is one less dollar you have to borrow.

Some international students can fund their US education simply using the sources above. However, like US students, most international students will need to fund at least a portion of their US education, if not the entire amount, with loans.

  • US Co-Signer Required. International student loans require a US citizen or permanent resident (Green card holder) as a co-signer. The loans are credit-based, meaning the co-signer must have good credit history, good employment history (or other income history if the co-signer does not work), and must have lived in the US for the past two years. Although not everyone can find a family member, friend or other US citizen or permanent resident to co-sign for them, for those that do, they can access private student loans on the same basis as US students.
  • Funds Paid Directly to Your School. Private international student loans disperse funds directly to the school so that they can “certify” the loan. This means that the school’s financial aid off signs of on the amount distributed, ensuring that the student is given up to the total cost of their education minus any other financial aid received. Once this has been certified, the school will then disperse the funds directly to student. Pay your tuition, room and board, health insurance and books first – anything extra is a luxury!
  • Repayment. Repayment of an international student loan will vary depending on the loan you select. The repayment period typically ranges from 10-25 years; the standard rule of thumb is the larger the loan, the longer the repayment period. Some loans allow you to defer payments until 6 months after graduation, others allow students to only pay interest while in school (and defer the principal), and other loans begin repayment of both the interest and principal immediately once the loan has been paid out. It is important to consider the options and your ability to pay back student loans when reviewing the lender terms and conditions. You are also eligible for hardship extensions if you run into unexpected circumstances that prevent you from being able to repay the loan for a short period of time.
  • Proof of Finances. One nice feature of international student loans is that you may be able to use the loan approval in order to satisfy the school and visa requirement of showing one year’s financial resources. While it’s not easy and it’s up to the school and consular officer if they’ll accept a loan approval as proper funds, this may be a helpful way to show proof of funds if you need additional financial assistance. You can apply for the loan without the proof of enrollment from your school, and receive conditional approval. Then you can provide your school with the pre-approval from the lender, and the school will see that you will have the necessary funds. Typically, a financial aid officer or international student advisor at a US school is quite familiar with this process and will help you.
  • Interest Rates. Interest rates are variable, based on the LIBOR or Prime – depending on your loan – plus a margin. Depending on the loan, the lender will clarify which index the loan uses and there will be an additional margin based on the borrower’s criteria, including the credit history of your co-signer and the repayment plan you select. The better your co-signer, the better your rate! LIBOR and Prime Rates are constantly fluctuating, up or down, so the interest rate will changed based on this index.
  • Online Application. You can apply right online, and receive initial approval in just a few short works. Then, you will need to sign the promissory note, and provide proof of enrollment and immigration status to receive your funds.
  • No Application Fees. There are no application fees to apply for an international student loan. There is an origination fee if you actually receive the loan, but that amount is rolled into the loan amount and does not have to be paid out of pocket.

International Student Loans

Learn about international student loans for studying in the U.S.

For decades, the United States has been a beacon of higher education around the world. With its globally recognized colleges and universities, students from around the world have been coming to America to pursue higher education. But how can they secure an international student loan to finance those educations?

To receive federal student financial aid, you must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national (including natives of American Samoa or Swain’s Island) or a U.S. permanent resident who holds a permanent resident card.

However, study abroad students are eligible for some private, international student loans. At Citizens Bank, our private student loan product, the Citizens Bank Student Loan . allows international students to apply as long as they have a credit-worthy co-signer who is a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.

Remember that international studying in the U.S. will require considerable preparation on your part. Among the things you’ll need to arrange for are:

  • Obtaining your student visa. In most countries, that will require an in-person interview. Consulates and embassies are busiest during the summer season, so you’ll want to make these arrangements before then.
  • Testing your English. Most colleges and universities in the U.S. will require overseas, non-native-English-speaking students to prove their command of English through a standardized test.

Some of these arrangements take longer than they used to in the post-9/11 environment. So don’t wait until the last minute to make your plans.

4 Steps To Find Your Student Loan

  1. Find Student Loans. To compare loans, the first step is to use our comparison tool above. Select the college you will be attending and the amount of money you need to borrow. You can then see the loans that meet your criteria.
  2. Select Your Student Loan. Next, see what lenders are available at your school. Compare the terms and conditions and click apply to start the online application.
  3. Fill Out Your Application. Complete the loan application for the lender. If you are a non-US citizen or non-US permanent resident, you will need to have a cosigner complete the online application as well. US students are also encouraged to have a cosigner.
  4. Get Approval. Initial approval is often within days or weeks of your completed application. Funds from your loan will be disbursed by your school once it has been approved.

Examining Your Student Loan

When you are comparing private student loans, it’s important to consider any fees, rates, and repayment options to ensure that you are choosing the loan that works best for your needs. You should evaluate and compare the following:

  • Monthly payments
  • Total cost of the loan
  • Annual percentage rate
  • Repayment period
  • Deferment option

Cosigners

All non-US citizens and permanent residents will be required to have a cosigner with good credit who has lived in the US for the past two years. International students will be required to include their cosigner on their application.

US citizens and permanent residents are not required to have a cosigner for their loan application, however a US cosigner can:

  1. Increase the likelihood of getting approved for their student loan
  2. Reduce the interest rate students are required to pay

Types of Student Loans

There are many student loans designed for students studying outside their home country. Our US student loans are available for non-US students coming to the US as well as US students studying in a foreign country. For more information about the particular student loan products, please see below:

Specialized in education and research in management, HEC Paris offers a complete and unique range of educational programs for the leaders of tomorrow: Masters Programs, MBA, PhD, Executive MBA, TRIUM Global Executive MBA and Executive Education open-enrolment and custom programs.

Founded in 1881 by the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry and founding member of Université Paris-Saclay, HEC Paris has a permanent faculty, more than 4,400 students and over 8,000 managers and executives in training every year.

Master in Management – Grande Ecole

The Grande École curriculum is divided into a generalist phase and a specialization phase. The first phase concentrates on business fundamentals, while the second one focuses on acquiring an expertise (chosen according to the professional goals of the student). The unique structure of the curriculum enables students to acquire both an excellent grounding in general management and expertise in a specific field. We firmly believe this combination is the key success factor in training future leaders and making a lasting impact on the careers of our students. The second year of the Master’s program Cycle is composed of a specialized and professional curriculum, and the composition of a research paper.

    Specialized Masters / MSc

Specialized Masters are one-year Master’s degrees taught in French. They are designed for students who already hold a Master’s degree in an other field and wish to specialize in a specific field of management. MSc programs are one-year Master’s degrees taught in English. They are designed for students who hold a Bachelor degree in any field from leading international universities.

    MBA

Custom designed for managers between the ages of 25 to 35 with previous work experience averaging 6 years, the MBA program addresses both functional and crossfunctional skills, through a fundamental and a customized thread to cover all areas of management in depth. Highly selective, the program has around 250 participants per year, from 52 different nationalities with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Participants gain hands-on, practical experience through seminars integrated into the curriculum, such as the MBA Tournament and the off-campus leadership seminar at St-Cyr Military Academy.

    Executive MBA

The Executive MBA is a transformational experience which offers senior managers and executives from all around the world the opportunity to select one of the 8 majors that take place in 14 international locations, and also to take classes in any of its different tracks in France or Qatar.

The EMBA is an interactive and intensive program developed to provide executives with an understanding of the international business context, as well as the comprehensive, practical and innovative knowledge and skills they need, to put their vision into action.

    TRIUM Global Executive MBA

TRIUM Global Executive MBA enables executives to understand the world, as it is today and will be tomorrow.

U.S. military probing more possible civilian deaths in Yemen raid

DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. (Reuters) – The U.S. military said on Wednesday it was looking into whether more civilians were killed in a raid on al Qaeda in Yemen on the weekend, in the first operation authorized by President Donald Trump as commander in chief.

U.S. Navy SEAL William Ryan Owens was killed in the raid on a branch of al Qaeda, also known as AQAP, in al Bayda province, which the Pentagon said also killed 14 militants. However, medics at the scene said about 30 people, including 10 women and children, were killed.

U.S. Central Command said in a statement that an investigating team had “concluded regrettably that civilian non-combatants were likely killed” during Sunday’s raid. It said children may have been among the casualties.

Central Command said its assessment “seeks to determine if there were any still-undetected civilian casualties in the ferocious firefight.”

Deadly U.S. raid may bolster Yemen s al Qaeda – Crisis Group

U.S. military officials told Reuters that Trump approved his first covert counterterrorism operation without sufficient intelligence, ground support or adequate backup preparations.

As a result, three officials said, the attacking SEAL team found itself dropping onto a reinforced al Qaeda base defended by landmines, snipers, and a larger than expected contingent of heavily armed Islamist extremists.

The Pentagon directed queries about the officials’ characterization of the raid to U.S. Central Command, which pointed only to its statement on Wednesday.

“CENTCOM asks for operations we believe have a good chance for success and when we ask for authorization we certainly believe there is a chance of successful operations based on our planning,” CENTCOM spokesman Colonel John Thomas said.

“Any operation where you are going to put operators on the ground has inherent risks,” he said.

The U.S. officials said the extremists base had been identified as a target before the Obama administration left office on Jan. 20, but then-President Barack Obama held off approving a raid ahead of his departure.

A White House official said the operation was thoroughly vetted by the previous administration and that the previous defense secretary had signed off on it in January. The raid was delayed for operational reasons, the White House official said.

The military officials who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity said “a brutal firefight” killed Owens and at least 15 Yemeni women and children. One of the dead was the 8-year-old daughter of Anwar al-Awlaki, a militant killed by a 2011 U.S. drone strike.

Some of the women were firing at the U.S. force, Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis told reporters.

    Intelligence Gathered

The American elite forces did not seize any militants or take any prisoners offsite, but White House spokesman Sean Spicer said on Wednesday the raid yielded benefits.

“Knowing that we killed an estimated 14 AQAP members and that we gathered an unbelievable amount of intelligence that will prevent the potential deaths or attacks on American soil is something that I think most service members understand, that that s why they joined the service, Spicer said.

A senior leader in Yemen’s al Qaeda branch, Abdulraoof al-Dhahab, and other militants were killed in the gunbattle, al Qaeda said.

One of the three U.S. officials said on-the-ground surveillance of the compound was minimal, at best.

The decision was made. to leave it to the incoming administration, partly in the hope that more and better intelligence could be collected, that official said.

As Sunday’s firefight intensified, the raiders called in Marine helicopter gunships and Harrier jump jets, and then two MV-22 Osprey vertical takeoff and landing aircraft to extract the SEALs.

One of the two suffered engine failure, two of the officials said, and hit the ground so hard that two crew members were injured, and one of the Marine jets had to launch a precision-guided bomb to destroy it.

Trump traveled to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Wednesday in an unexpected visit to meet the family of Owens, who had been a chief special warfare operator.

    Global Health

The School of Public Health offers a Specialty Area of study in Global Health for graduate students enrolled in any of the School’s discipline-based programs. The objectives of the Global Health Specialty Area (GHSA) are to support and cultivate students’ interests in global health, and to help develop competencies and skills in global public health that can be applied to students’ careers. The GHSA provides an opportunity for students to explore multidisciplinary issues in global health through coursework, mentorship, and global health engagement.

    GHSA core advisors include:

    Eligibility

Graduate students enrolled in a discipline-based program at the School of Public Health and Master of Development Practice (MDP) program.

    Requirements

    • Initial advising session: Email and meet with Robert Snyder to schedule a meeting to:
      • Discuss your interests and goals in global health
      • Go through your advising and tracking form (found in the GHSA handbook )
      • Choose three potential faculty mentors from the mentor list (found in the GHSA handbook )
      • Address other matters of concern (i.e. internships, course selection, GHSA requirements, etc.)
    • Global Health faculty mentor: More than 30 faculty members at UC Berkeley are designated mentors in the GHSA (see GHSA handbook ). Each mentor brings a different set of skills, geographic expertise, and research areas. You will be assigned a mentor after your initial advising session. We will try our best to match you with one of your top choices. These mentors do not need to be your only global health mentors. GHSA core advisors are always available, and we encourage students to connect with other faculty who are not their mentors.

    2. Global Health Coursework (9 units total)

    • Complete at least one global health core course (2 units).
      • Fall: Foundations of Global Public Health: PH C253/DEVP C232 (Reingold/Fong) – 2 units
      • Spring: The Future of Global Public Health: PH 212D (Hemmerling/Le) – 2 units
      • We encourage students to take both courses, and most take the course during Year 1. Those without previous global health experience are highly recommended to take the fall course.
    • Complete a minimum of 5 additional units of global health coursework (7, if only one core course).
      • Coursework should enable students to gain a transdisciplinary global health perspective.
      • Eligible courses are chosen from a list of those approved by GHSA staff at the School of Public Health, and in other UC Berkeley departments. A list of approved courses is included in the GHSA handbook. Other courses can qualify if approved in consultation with GHSA advisors and/or your faculty mentor.
      • These additional courses cannot be core requirements for your degree program. A GHSA core advisor can assess these on a case-by-case basis.
      • Courses must be taken for a letter grade.
    • In addition, you must meet all course requirements and electives for your degree program.

    3. Global Health Engagement

    • Events: This concentration also aims to bring together the UC Berkeley global health community. As such, we request all those in the GHSA to attend two global health seminars or events at UC Berkeley each semester (i.e. events hosted by the School of Public Health. Center for Emerging and Neglected Diseases. Center for Global Public Health. Blum Center. Bixby Center. etc.). We will inform you about Bay Area global health events, news, and opportunities.
    • Internships: (Note: Global health internships are recommended, but not required. It is a desired outcome of the specialty, but is not mandatory.)
      • For students in 2-year programs, we encourage you to work with your mentor to develop a global health-related internship in the summer, either at home or abroad. While the responsibility for securing an acceptable international placement lies with the student, the Center for Public Health Practice Leadership (CPHPL) and the Center for Global Public Health (CGPH) offer a number of resources for global health internships. MPH internship placements must be approved by the CPHPL and should provide the student with a relevant and rigorous off-campus learning experience.
      • Students in 1-year programs are encouraged to seek practical and/or research experiences in global health during their studies. Your mentor can help you brainstorm, and you are welcome to contact CPHPL and CGPH to explore opportunities.
    • Graduate Global Health Connection: Starting in the fall semester 2016, the CGPH-SPH will be sponsoring monthly semi-structured meetups on the last Monday or Tuesday of each month. These events are organized in an effort to develop a global health community at Berkeley and also to facilitate networking and global health career development activities among our graduate students. The meetings are mandatory (minimum requirement: 2 of 4 per semester) for all those interested in (or already pursuing/in) the GHSA and the CGPH Fellows programs.

    Accreditation

Each student who successfully completes the requirements of the GHSA will receive a document signed by the Chair of the Global Health Specialty Area (Professor Art Reingold) certifying the student’s completion of the requirements for the specialty area.

SUV Review: 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe XL Limited

    A mild refresh for Hyundai’s mid-sized SUV

Pros Good power, roomy, easy to drive

Cons Not as stylish as smaller Sport version, cabin environment still bland

    Value for money Good

What would I change? Bling up the cabin with a splash of colour and better quality materials

How I would spec it? XL Luxury 6-passenger ($42,599)

Not normally given to hyperbole, Hyundai Auto Canada is nonetheless stretching the definition of the word “extensive” in announcing the changes made to the largest model in its lineup, the mid-sized Santa Fe XL sport-ute. And, talk about getting a jump on the year, said refreshed XL is being released as a 2017 model.

    Local Pricing Incentives

It’s not that I’m making light of the popular three-row SUV; it’s just that these revisions are really subtle — at least to someone not intimately connected with the South Korean automaker. Of course, another way of looking at it is that Hyundai is confident it got the essentials right when it initially launched the XL for the 2014 model year, and the 2017 version’s “fluidic sculpture” styling merely needs a tweak here and there to be competitive with its rivals. Speaking of which, these would include other three-row models such as the Toyota Highlander. Nissan Pathfinder. Honda Pilot. Kia Sorento. Ford Explorer and GMC Acadia .

For those with keen eyesight, exterior changes to the biggest Santa Fe — there’s also the smaller, five-passenger Sport version — include new headlights, grille, taillights, bumpers, wheel design and standard LED daytime running lights (with aerodynamic vents that improve airflow by shuttling air around the front wheels). Inside, there’s a new centre stack (that looks a lot like the old centre stack) with a standard five-inch LCD touchscreen, plus an “extensive” list of new features.

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe XL Limited

What hasn’t changed is the powertrain. There’s nothing fancy here — no turbocharged four-cylinder or hybrid setups — just the Lambda II 3.3-litre DOHC V6 with gasoline direct injection that pumps out a solid 290 horsepower and 252 lb.-ft. of torque. Interestingly, even though the XL is built in Korea, the engine was tuned at the Hyundai America Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to ensure “it suits the preferences of North American drivers.” If that means something that will haul, the XL delivers; its maximum towing capacity of 2,268 kilograms (5,000 pounds) is ideal for pulling weekend toys.

    RELATED

It also provides the 1,840-kilogram all-wheel-drive SUV (1,784 kg for the base front-drive model) with decent zip — instrumented testing done a couple of years ago had the XL accelerating to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds and pulling off an 80-to-120 passing move in 6.6 seconds. Given no change in the powertrain and no weight gain, the 2017 version should post an identical result.

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe XL Limited

As in the Santa Fe Sport, XL models now come with Drive Mode Select, which adjusts the steering, throttle and six-speed transmission in response to whichever of the Sport, Eco, or Normal settings is preferred. There’s nothing extreme here; it’s a fairly mild progression between each setting.

The V6 is mated to a six-speed automatic with Shiftronic manual mode. All models feature an ActiveEco system that modifies engine and transmission control to smooth out throttle response and, says Hyundai, increase real-world fuel economy by up to seven per cent. For all that, my test average of 16.5 L/100 km — predominantly suburban commuting — was no better than most SUVs the size of the XL.

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe XL Limited

All trim levels save the base model get Hyundai’s advanced active AWD system, which activates automatically as needed, apportioning power in order to optimize traction. Under normal conditions, it distributes power to the front wheels only. While it might lack the sophistication of AWD systems in such legendary off-road brands as Jeep and Land Rover, it worked just fine during a day of freezing rain and ice. The AWD system incorporates Active Cornering Control, part of the vehicle stability management system, which helps the XL manage acceleration in a corner. To improve traction and cornering performance, braking force is applied to the inside rear wheel when accelerating through a turn.

Ride and handling is quite satisfactory for a sport-ute, though nothing extraordinary. All Santa Fes, big and small, have a MacPherson strut front suspension and a fully independent multi-link rear suspension, with stabilizer bars at both ends.

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe XL Limited

The XL increases second-row legroom by 50 millimetres and cargo capacity by 240 litres relative to the five-passenger Santa Fe Sport. Standard for the XL is a 40/20/40 split-folding second-row bench seat for seven-passenger capability. Optional, as in the case of the tester, is a six-passenger layout with second-row captain’s chairs. Access to the third row — a 50/50 split-folding bench seat — is tight, and, with just 800 mm of legroom, the back row is best left to the young and flexible.

    RELATED

New for 2017 is the Ultimate model, which, as its name obviously suggests, is the top-end trim, with all the bells and whistles. The tester was a Limited, the next-highest model, still fully featured with the usual modern conveniences, including heated/ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, 12-speaker premium audio system, eight-inch high-resolution touchscreen with navigation system and Android Auto, blind-spot detection, sunroof, rear-passenger HVAC controls and vents and much more.

2017 Hyundai Santa Fe XL Limited

One thing Hyundai still hasn’t quite got a grasp on is a cabin “presence” befitting a vehicle priced at more than $44,000. Layout is still heavily skewed toward function, with a black plasticky interior bordering on the dull. On the plus side, the dash layout has a nice design to it and features big and well-marked buttons and knobs to handle the various functions.

The Santa Fe XL is easy to drive and is a competent all-around, four-season family vehicle. Yet, despite the makeover, it’s looking a little ordinary up against the likes of Honda ’s redesigned 2016 Pilot and the just-unveiled — at the New York Auto Show — 2017 Toyota Highlander. The upshot is that while it should still be on the list for those shopping three-row SUVs/crossovers, it shouldn’t be the only model there.

Do you have private insurance? Wondering if your benefit covers an air ambulance transfer? Let our Insurance Specialists take the insurance headache out of your stressful situation.

It is not easy to verify whether your private insurance policy provides benefits for an Air Ambulance transfer. Insurance coverage on air ambulance flights is determined on a case by case basis. There are numerous factors that come into play when establishing whether or not this service is covered. You must know the right questions to ask and be able to interpret the answers in order to confirm if you truly do have coverage. Each patient s condition and policy benefits are unique. Our Insurance Specialists have the experience and can determine if your claim will be accepted or rejected.

One key factor in the insurance approval process is determining if the Air Ambulance is deemed Medically Necessary .

    What is Medical Necessity ?

The American Medical Association developed the Model Managed Care Contract. Based on this Model, it was determine that Medical Necessity is defined as follows:

    • Health care or services that a prudent physician would provide to a patient for the purposes of preventing, diagnosing, or treating an illness, injury, disease, or its symptoms in a manner that is:
      • In accordance with generally accepted standards of medical practice;
      • Clinically appropriate in terms of frequency, extent, site, and duration; and
      • Not primarily for the economic benefit of the health plans and purchasers or for the convenience of the patient, treating physician, or other health care provider.

Determining Medical Necessity, although a key factor to establish, is only one of many challenges that the family faces in getting their claim paid. Air Ambulance Worldwide has insurance specialists that will navigate the maze inside insurance companies and take the stress away from you. Most air ambulance companies will complete a form or two for you then let you navigate the maze on your own. Not at Air Ambulance Worldwide. We will make every attempt to confirm your coverage, determine the likelihood of your benefit to be paid and finally we will file, track and continue to see the entire process through to the end.

If the attending physician gives a letter of Medical Necessity to the patient or family, does that guarantee payment of the Air Ambulance flight? Even though your Doctor provides a letter of Medical Necessity, your benefit contract often leaves sole discretion of necessity to the Medical Director of the insurance company. Your doctor may say that a certain procedure or service is required but the doctor at the insurance company may say that the procedure or service is not necessary. At this point you are left with very few options. This is where our insurance specialists get to work. We will continue to pursue payment until the very end while you stay focused on your loved one; not distracted by insurance frustrations.

Contact a Flight Coordinator today so we can take the weight off your shoulders.

    Maritime Law

    What is the ‘Maritime Law’

Maritime law is a body of laws, conventions and treaties that governs international private business or other matters involving ships, shipping or crimes occurring on open water. Laws between nations governing such things as national versus international waters are considered public international law and are known as the Law of the Seas. Maritime law is also known as “admiralty law.”

    BREAKING DOWN ‘Maritime Law’

In most developed nations, maritime law is governed by a separate code and is a separate jurisdiction from national laws. The United Nations. through the International Maritime Organization (IMO), has issued numerous conventions that can be enforced by the navies and coast guards of countries that have signed the treaty outlining these rules. Maritime law governs many of the insurance claims relating to ships and cargo, civil matters between shipowners, seamen and passengers, and piracy.

Additionally, maritime law regulates the registration, license, and inspection procedures for ships and shipping contracts, maritime insurance and the carriage of goods and passengers.

    IMO Conventions

The IMO was created in 1958 and is responsible for ensuring that existing international maritime conventions are kept up to date as well as develop new conventions as and when the need arises. Today, there are dozens of conventions regulating all aspects of maritime commerce and transport.

The IMO identifies three of these as its key conventions. They are:

The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea

The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships

The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers

Conventions are regularly amended to keep up with new business practices and technologies. On its website, the IMO has a complete list of existing conventions, their historical amendments and explanatory notes.

    Enforcement

The governments of the of IMO’s 171 member states are responsible for the enforcement of IMO conventions for ships of their nationality. Local governments enforce the provisions of IMO conventions as far as their own ships are concerned and set the penalties for infringements. In some cases, ships must carry certificates on board the ship to show that they have been inspected and have met the required standards.

    Nationality of Ships

A ship’s nationality is determined by the country where it is registered. Most ships are registered in the national registry of the country where their owners reside or operate their business. However, often for reasons of tax planning or to take advantage of more lenient local rules, some owners will register ships in countries that allow foreign ships to be registered. These registries are called “flags of convenience.” Two common examples of flags of convenience are Panama and Bermuda.

    Thomas A. McCormack
    1950-2017
Thomas McCormack passed away on March 13, 2017, the one and only of Carin; beloved by daughter Anna and granddaughter Flannery; cherished son and brother; favored uncle and A-1 in-law. A lawyer by calling and, in his very being, a generous and humane friend, guide, champion unsung in the wide world, inscribed in many hearts. ‘He was a man. Take him for all in all.’ We were the lucky ones. A better man could not be found. Tom dedicated his practice to child custody, divorce, child support and related matters in Greater Cleveland and Northeast Ohio.

    REPRESENTING YOU

Thomas McCormack dedicates his practice to family law, divorce, child custody, child support and related matters in Greater Cleveland and Northeast Ohio.

Commitment: To prevent problems and resolve family law issues in ways that cause the least conflict and cost for clients.

Perspective. People get better outcomes when they participate in their own cases to constructively resolve issues and move forward.

Experience: Thirty years – more than seven as a trial magistrate hearing thousands of divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support, pension division and property division cases— a record of strong advocacy and thorough, practical knowledge of how family law and the courts work. A FOCUS ON MARRIAGE

    REARRANGING YOUR LIFE

Whether your marriage is ending or just beginning, it makes sense to anticipate the future, understand what the law says, and head off problems. Free initial consultation: 216.664.0792

    PLAN A MARRIAGE

Pre-nuptial agreements. Begin a life partnership with clear understandings and all interests protected. If either partner has significant holdings, a prenuptial agreement can preserve the property and identify the rights of each person if the marriage ends.

    END A MARRIAGE

Separation, divorce, dissolution, annulment. How you go about ending your marriage is usually up to you. You have choices .
And you may face important decisions about how to:

Custody, parenting time, visitation, support, companionship rights. The aim is to divide rights and responsibilities fairly to serve each child’s best interests. This includes child support .

Real estate, possessions, money, securities, pension plans. The aim is to arrive at a fair property division .

Ohio has no formula for calculating support but courts tend to adopt similar approaches to spousal support .

Post-decree modifications. After a marriage formally ends, new or continuing financial and child-related issues may need to be settled.

    ANSWER VIOLENCE

Civil protection orders and temporary protection orders for adults and children.

    CONSTRUCTING A BETTER FUTURE

Children seldom are able to protect themselves. Safeguarding the interests of children is an area of special concern in my practice. The goal is creating solutions that work for kids when the challenge is to:

    TAKE CARE OF CHILDREN

Parental rights and responsibilities, child custody, parenting time. Ohio law puts children first. The test for decisions about parenting is whether they serve children s best interests .

Child support and health care. Ohio courts calculate child support by a formula. Health insurance or cash medical support and income tax exemptions also figure in child support .

    EXTEND FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS

Grandparent and step-parent companionship rights, custody, adoption. In some cases, the law recognizes non-parents rights .

    RESOLVE JUVENILE COURT ISSUES

Proceedings in juvenile court, defense of children, neglect or dependency proceedings, paternity and parenting issues between unmarried parents .

    International VoIP Calls #voip #providers #international #calls, #international #voip #calls

    International VoIP Calls

International VoIP works the same way regular VoIP works (learn How VoIP Works here): audio codecs compress the call and transmit it digitally over Internet Protocol to a local or regional destination, where the call unloads onto the local public telephone network or the appropriate VoIP network.

Some VoIP providers offer a certain amount of free international minutes with their VoIP service plan.

Consider, with us, what international calls were like before VoIP made things less expensive?

    Challenges for International VoIP

Though effective, there are some roadblocks for International VoIP

    1. Different Codecs

Audio codecs (which convert the sound of your voice to data packets that the Internet can transport) occassionally vary between countries and VoIP providers. That’s a hurdle that VoIP providers usually manage pretty easily.

    2. VoIP is not available in all countries

In some countries, it is illegal to use or sell VoIP. Obviously, in these countries, you can’t make international calls with VoIP.

    3. International VoIP and Telephone Networks

The biggest limitation for international VoIP calls is the quality of the phone network in the international destination.

International calls to developing countries are much more expensive than international calls to developed countries; it is much cheaper to call from the US to Europe than to call from the US to Central Africa. Calls to extremely remote locations are even more expensive (like Antartica).

However, for the most part, international calls with VoIP are much cheaper than international calls with any other calling method.

Costs may be incurred, however, if fixtures do not meet our minimum requirements.

It depends on several factors: how many practices on the Green Business are already in place, how complicated the facility is (i.e. is there a kitchen, parking lot, or pool?), and how committed the business is to making the required changes quickly. It generally takes a quick business about a month to 6 weeks. An average time frame is about 3 months. Some businesses can take up to a year if they move slowly or have complicated changes to make.

For months after the shooting at the Orlando nightclub Pulse, which killed 49 including Sarasota resident Eddie Sotomayor and left 53 more injured, Sotomayor’s longtime friend and supervisor, Al Ferguson, kept marking dates on the calendar. As each month passed, Ferguson would note the 12th of that month. Sometimes it seemed almost absentminded, a habit he couldn’t quite explain. But after six months, Ferguson knew something had to change about the way he expressed his grief. Because six months earlier, on June 12, 2016, he had lost one of his closest friends and colleagues in the deadliest mass shooting in recent history.

Despite the significant populations of international students at colleges and universities across the country, international students often face formidable hurdles in financing their education.

Some private universities are able to offer need-blind financial assistance for international students, but most universities are unable to offer financial aid to international students. In such cases, international students who are unable to afford the cost of attendance entirely out-of-pocket have no choice but to seek out private student loans.

    International Student Loans

International student loans are available to non-US citizens studying at a college or university in the United States. Many foreign students apply for loans to help pay for college – especially as the cost can add up when tuition, room and board, transportation, books, supplies, health insurance, and other expenses are all factored together.

International student loans are available year round and can cover up to the total cost of school minus any other financial aid received. Our student loan comparison tool will match you with eligible loan options which you can review and choose the loan that works best for your circumstances.

    Compare International Student Loans

All loans are not created equal so we developed an easy to use comparison tool to help users find the loan that works best for their situation. After you input your citizenship and school, the widget return a list of lenders that will work for you. Compare the different terms and conditions, choose the loan that works best for you, and apply online.

    Cosigner Required for All Applicants

Because international students do not built up a credit history in the US, lenders require international students to have a US cosigner. A cosigner is a person who can legally sign loan papers or documentation with another person in order to help the other person obtain a loan. The cosigner makes a legal agreement to be jointly responsible for the repayment of the loan if the borrower should fail to pay their debts in a timely manner.
