Online Medical Billing and Coding Schools

Obtaining formal education regarding medical billing and coding procedures is one of the more popular certifications pursued by students who want to work in the medical field but do not want to spend several years in school. A medical biller and coder handles administrative tasks for a healthcare provider or medical facility that involve submitting accurately coded insurance claims to health insurance companies in order to receive payment from the insurance company.

Medical billing and coding specialists also answer questions about claims, posts payments and remain in contact with patients and insurance companies concerning claims that have been rejected or are pending following a review of the services listed on the claim. In addition, they may also be in charge of turning unpaid accounts over to collection agencies after a certain amount of time has elapsed between the patient receiving the bill and the last payment received, if any.

Medical billing and coding online schoolsCoding a health insurance claim involves attention to accuracy, detail and the ability to determine the correct code number for the patient s injury, illness, disease and treatment rendered by the physician. Also referred to as medical classification , medical coding uses alphanumeric or numeric strings that indicate the implementation of various items by a physician that are necessary to process an insurance claim. For example, a code that reads XX990 may be the code for acute bronchitis . If the bronchitis was accompanied by a fever, the code may have an additional number or letter, such as XX99044 , meaning bronchitis with fever .

Thousands of such codes exist to describe an extensive list of medical conditions, procedures and treatment plans. However, because it would be nearly impossible to remember them all, people working as medical billing and coding specialists have access to the CPT 2012 book (Current Procedural Terminology) published by the American Medical Association. This book contains up-to-date information such as billing guidelines for various health insurance companies, hundreds of defined codes and Medicare/Medicaid rules.

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act

All online medical billing and coding schools will include classes about HIPAA, or the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act enacted in 1996. This act affects anyone who is employed in some way with the healthcare industry because it is meant to protect a patient s privacy. Contact information, medical records, birth date and even benefit entitlements are all guarded by this act, whether it is an electronic, spoken or written record of the patient s interaction with a medical facility. It is especially important to medical coders and billers because they have immediate access to such personal information and are primarily responsible for not divulging this information to anyone but the insurance company and individuals specified by the patient. Additional Courses

According to a recent survey conducted by the AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders), respondents holding medical billing and coding positions reported that nearly 85 to 95 percent of their job consisted of coding insurance document. The remainder of their time involved billing and administrative duties. For this reason, some schools suggest that students consider enrolling in at least one or two business courses while also participating in their regular billing/coding program. Learning digital record keeping procedures using software programs such as Access, Excel and different medical office software will enhance your chances with employers searching for the most skilled and knowledgeable medical billing and coding specialists. Certified Coding Specialist Exam

All students graduating from the Penn Foster medical billing and coding program (as well as other accredited online schools offering the program) are eligible to take the Certified Coding Specialist exam (given by the American Health Information Management Association) and the Certified Professional Coder exam (given by the American Academy of Professional Coders). Although graduates are not required to take these examinations following certification, successfully completing one or both of these tests demonstrates a person s excellent coding skills along with other administrative qualities that are attractive to potential employers.

Meditec Medical and Billing Training

Medical billing and coding online schoolsWith more than 40 years experience in medical billing and coding training, Meditec provides students with classes that involve coding nearly 650 real inpatient/outpatient charts as well as instruction in medical terminology and health insurance documentation practices. The school is state regulated and the price of tuition includes everything a student will need to successfully obtain certification in medical billing and coding procedure.

Other popular and accredited online schools offering certification in medical billing and coding include Colorado Technical University Online, Everest University Online and Kaplan Continuing Education programs.

Financial Assistance

To determine whether a student is eligible for federal financial assistance, schools recommend you fill out and submit a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). For those with incomes below a certain level, the federal government may provide students with Pell Grants that will pay for the cost of attending an online medical coding and billing school. Pell Grants do not need repaid and any amount left over after tuition has been paid can be used by the student to purchase books and supplies.

To successfully submit a FAFSA online, students will need to access and transmit the following information to the Department of Education:

  1. Driver s license or other picture ID card
  2. Social Security card
  3. Previous year s income tax forms (if applicable)
  4. Child support documentation
  5. Proof of any income obtained from scholarships, fellowship aid or grants

The school listed on the FAFSA in which a student plans to enroll is usually notified within six weeks of a student sending the form regarding his or her eligibility. That school will then contact the student to complete financial aid forms or discuss payment options if the student is ineligible for financial aid.

Employment Outlook for Medical Billing and Coding Opportunities

The most recent edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook reports that as with all professions dealing with the healthcare industry, medical billing and coding jobs are expected to increase as much as 20 percent by 2018. Experienced medical records specialists have the potential to earn $50,000 annually, depending on where the position is geographically located and type of medical facility.

Busy urban area hospitals and clinics will pay more for expert medical billers and coders than smaller emergency care establishments located in rural areas. However, the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that this type of employment is one of the more stable occupations available and has continued to project a high demand for certified billers and coders over the past decade.

Life Insurance With and Without a Medical Exam, AIG Direct, life insurance quotes no medical exam.

#Life #insurance #quotes #no #medical #exam

A Look at Life Insurance Policies with and without a Medical Exam

Many term life insurance carriers require a medical exam when you apply. Some don’t. Here’s a look at the impact of having an exam or not.

Term Life Insurance with a Medical Exam

It might seem inconvenient (or even unpleasant) to get a medical exam, but it can benefit you.

The Insurance Carriers that offer term life insurance with a medical exam, require an exam to get an accurate idea of your health situation. It helps them to rule out health problems, identifying conditions that might increase your risk of dying. Once they know about your health, they can assign you an appropriate rate based on risk. If you’re healthy and your risk of dying seems low, you’re likely to get a lower rate than someone with health issues.

The medical exam is usually performed by a paramedical professional or nurse. For your convenience, you can schedule it at your home or place of work. It usually takes about 30 minutes or less. The exam consists of basics such as checking vital signs, a blood test and urinalysis. In some cases, the carrier may want additional tests, such as an EKG/ECG.

While having a medical exam isn’t usually something to be concerned about, be aware that it can reveal a health condition you weren’t aware of. Also, if you are declined term life insurance based on what the exam reveals, it could impact your ability to become insured elsewhere.

Term Life Insurance Without a Medical Exam

Term Life Insurance without a medical exam has a tendency to be more expensive than medically underwritten policies. That’s because, generally speaking, the carriers average out everyone’s risk and charge accordingly. So, if you are in good health but choose to purchase term life insurance that does not require a medical exam, you may end up paying a higher premium than necessary.

Most of the term life insurance carriers that do not require a medical exam will still inquire about your medical history and lifestyle. Based on your answers, they might set the premium rates higher or lower.

Some companies issue policies without asking any questions about medical history. This increases the risk to them, so they tend to charge higher premiums and set lower coverage amounts.

Term Life Insurance With a Conditional Medical Exam

Some term life insurance carriers require a medical exam only if it seems warranted after asking health and lifestyle questions. For example, if they find out that you are a smoker, had a serious illness or want a high coverage amount, they might require an exam.

To learn more about term life insurance and the application process, contact AIG Direct today. Our licensed professionals can help you decide if having a medical exam as part of the application process makes sense for you or not.

Online Medical Billing Programs

There are very few industries currently experiencing as much growth as the medical sector, both in the short and the long term. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) the health care and social assistance sector will account for more than a third of the projected job growth between 2014 and 2024. That means increased demand for professions that fall within that industry, including office and administrative workers. The Affordable Care Act has added a level of complexity to existing billing processes, so that medical billing specialists will continue to be in high demand.

Oftentimes, when a sector experiences rapid growth, schools may struggle to keep up with the demands placed on related certificate and degree programs. Luckily, the new millennium has brought us incredible technologies to help address those increased demands, especially through the medium of online education. Universities throughout the country offer easily accessible online medical billing programs — both certificates and some associate degrees — to ensure that tomorrow’s workforce is qualified and ready to work.

Online Medical Billing Degree Programs

Medical billing professionals typically need some post-secondary training for entry-level positions. According to the BLS, if you’re interested in becoming a medical records or health information technician, the best option is an associate degree in medical information technology. To prepare for this degree, it’s recommended to take high school courses in health, math, biology and computer science.

Medical records are highly confidential, so it’s important for health information techs to be organized and extremely knowledgeable in their field. Medical billing students can expect to take classes in:

  • Health data requirements
  • Legal topics
  • Anatomy
  • Coding and classification systems
  • Medical terminology

Most associate degrees usually take two years to complete, and many employers will also require some form of certification. In fact, most careers in the health care sector will require certification and ongoing education, due to the sensitive nature of the work. According to the BLS, certifications include:

  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR)

Some organizations, but not all, certify medical records technicians upon passing a standardized national exam. Keep in mind that once you’re certified, you must continue to take educational courses and renew your certification every few years.

While on-campus options are available at many community colleges and vocational schools across the country, an online medical billing certificate program is often the quickest way to capitalize on the educational investment. A variety of universities, including brick-and-mortar institutions as well as online-only programs are available for students to choose from. Most universities offer certificate programs, which can typically be completed within one year of study.

Career Outlook for Medical Billing Professionals

While the BLS provides no data specifically on the profession of medical billing, it does provide earnings data on affiliated professions such as bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks and medical records and health information technicians, which might provide insight into earnings potential. Medical records and health information technicians can work a bit more on the patient side than strictly on the billing and accounting side, but the earnings may be comparable to those that can be expected by medical billing specialists.

According to the BLS, medical records and health information technicians earned a mean annual wage of $40,430 in 2015, and the job growth for the profession is expected to be strong at 15 percent, which is faster than average. As for bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks, who perform similar functions as medical billing specialists, but usually in non-medical fields, the BLS lists a mean annual wage of $38,990.

In terms of states with the most available positions for bookkeeping clerks, the nation is led by California, Texas and New York while the most positions for medical records and health information technicians are available in California, Texas and Florida. When it comes to earnings, medical records technicians earn the highest wages in the District of Columbia, New Jersey and Alaska while bookkeeping clerks can also expect to earn the most in the Washington, D.C. area, Alaska and Massachusetts.

Choosing Your Medical Billing School

Before selecting a school, all students should carefully research school graduation rates, costs and potential employment opportunities upon graduation. It’s also a good idea to talk to alumni about their careers. The most important factor is to make sure the school is accredited. Before making a decision, spend some time learning about the online learning platform that the university uses and find out about the amount of student-instructor interaction that will be available to future students.

Medical Coding Careers

There are hundreds of medical coding programs available some of them are thorough and highly reliable, and others are quite the opposite. So how do you know where to place your future and your money? Choosing a medical coding program is easy when you look for one that is accredited or given the stamp of approval . Accreditation is essentially proof that a coding program has met third party standards of excellence, and could be a good place for you to receive your medical coding training.

Now when I say third party, I mean a group or organization that does not have any affiliations or ties to the program. Think of it as a neutral, unbiased opinion that is given by the group. Groups like the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and the National Commission of Certifying Agencies (NCCA) strive to ensure that only the best programs and the students they produce are meeting industry standards. Accredited programs are generally regarded as authorities in medical coding and meet the essential requirements necessary to help its students achieve academic excellence. With all that, why would you even consider another program?

In order to be accredited, individual programs must prove that their curriculum, teachers and course requirements are top-notch. Because of this accreditation, you can feel assured that choosing to enroll in one of these programs is more secure and will help prepare you for your future. Many of the best medical coding programs will also provide test preparation for certification exams and perhaps assist with career placement once you have completed your course of study.

Graduates of accredited programs are more likely to get solid, steady jobs once they graduate, and continuing on to complete additional certifications only helps to solidify your presence in a rapidly growing field, which eventually earns them more money. If you are going to invest your time and effort, make sure you are focusing that time in a quality, respected environment and choosing an accredited program is just that.

Life Insurance With and Without a Medical Exam, AIG Direct, cheap life insurance without medical exam.

#Cheap #life #insurance #without #medical #exam

Learn Medical Billing Online/Training Course for Certification

Exactly what will you learn as an Andrews medical billing student? Your training will include a variety of skills such as medical terminology, healthcare rules and regulations relating to medical billing, coding, and reimbursement. Our medical billing program will give you the knowledge and skills you need for professional billing credentials or certification. The course instructor is available to get you started, answer your questions, and guide you toward medical billing career options. All medical billing books and materials are included.

There may be as many different job descriptions as there are Medical Billers out there, but there is a core set of skills that is universal. These are the skills you need to be able to quickly and easily adapt to any Medical Billing job you end up in. Did you know that in many medical offices claims are filed incorrectly, denied for payment by the insurance companies, and never followed up or re-filed at all? Medical billers and reimbursement specialists must be able to process and track the many different types of insurance claims. They must also be able to explain benefits and fees to patients, while complying with relevant laws and regulations.

Medical billing course

Our students learn medical terminology, the differences between each type of insurance provider and how to bill them, the rules and regulations that billers and medical offices have to follow, and more. They practice with EHR software and CMS-1500 claims forms. Students don’t need prior office experience or medical knowledge to take our course, but those who have it are able to move faster through their assignments. If you have previous work experience as a medical administrative assistant, medical secretary, or medical transcriptionist, you will already be a step ahead in your medical billing career.

All books and materials for the medical billing class are included.

Our practical approach is designed to teach the information graduates need for a variety of billing or reimbursement positions while eliminating time-wasting “fluff” or filler topics that add little or nothing to on-the-job success.

Call us at 405-721-3555 now for more information about medical billing. If you prefer, write [email protected] with your questions about getting started toward your career in medical billing.

If you would rather talk directly to the medical billing instructor about the best way to reach your medical billing career goals, you may call her at 405-721-3560.

When you write or call, let us know how you heard about us. We’d like to know if you were referred by a medical billing employer, one of our successful graduates, or an online search.

Associate Degree in Medical Billing and Coding, online medical billing and coding degree.

#Online #medical #billing #and #coding #degree

Online Associate Degree in Medical Billing and Coding

Do you have a strong desire for working in the medical field, but also torn because you love the idea of working at home and making your own hours? While medical billing and coding is a career that is often overlooked, it is actually one that is growing progressively over the years. By getting an associate’s degree in the field, you will be one step closer toward starting a career that will allow you to immerse in the healthcare profession while having the freedom to work from home if you want.

As the Baby Boomers get older, the medical industry is expected to grow tremendously over the years. Because people need to regularly get physical check-ups or see a doctor due to illness, there is always a constant need for the healthcare industry. With that said, there is no better time to get into medical billing and coding.

Now, you might be wondering what exactly medical billers and coders do on a daily basis. In short, they are responsible for making sure that your doctor’s appointment actually gets billed to the insurance provider, and that they pay the right amount for the right procedure. Because this position essentially bridges the gap between doctors and hospitals to the insurance industry, it is a very important one. Doctors depend on medical billers to get reimbursed for their time and work.

Getting a degree in this subject is not mandatory, but like most careers these days, having one surely helps. The associate’s degree typically takes two years of full-time study to complete. However, if you choose to earn your credential online, you may be able to complete it earlier. Depending on how many classes you can take per quarter/semester, you may be able to finish a lot quicker.

Online medical billing and coding degree

Keiser University

Keiser University’s Associate of Science degree in Medical Administrative Billing Coding prepares students to assign accurate medical codes for diagnostic procedures and other services offered by healthcare practitioners.

Common Associate’s in Medical Billing and Coding Curriculum

By committing to an associate’s degree in medical billing and coding, you can expect to learn a plethora of things in the medical field and more. With so much to learn, it is unlikely that you will get bored with your studies.

For example, you might take coursework in the following subjects:

  • Medical terminology
  • Anatomy
  • Health care organization
  • Disease processes
  • Diagnostic coding
  • Procedural coding
  • Medical law
  • Time management

The list goes on, but this should give you a pretty good idea of what you can expect to learn at the associate’s level.

In addition to medical billing and coding related courses, you will also be required to take some electives and general education classes before graduating. These classes will help you develop a well-rounded foundation of knowledge that will be useful in understanding real-life situations and succeeding in your job in the future. For example, you might take introductory classes in art, math, science, history, language, and more. Many of these general education course requirements can be waived if you took AP classes and passed their respective exams in high school. If this sounds like it might be you, we recommend checking with your college counselor to see which classes you might not have to retake.

Associate’s in Medical Billing and Coding Careers

Once you’ve earned your medical billing and coding associate’s degree, you can expect to find work at private practices, hospitals, clinics, and insurance companies. If you have always wanted the freedom and comfort that comes with working from home, you can do that too! This is what many people do these days since the Internet has made it much more convenient and practical to do so.

If you don’t like interacting with others face-to-face and prefer to work behind a computer all day, you will love that this career is one of the few that do not require direct interaction with patients. Instead, you may converse with patients, doctors, and insurance companies by phone. Mostly, you will be sitting at a desk with a computer all day working with billing and coding data.

The salary for a medical billing and coding professional will depend on your education, location, and experience. You can earn anywhere from $25,000 to $45,000 a year in this industry. Since this field is growing over the years, students can expect the salary to go up as demand increases.

Medical Billing and Coding: An Exploding Home Career Opportunity

t he most challenging activity in any doctor’s office involves the billing operation. That’s partly because of Medicare changes (most doctors have a lot of senior patents) and partly because health insurance companies have such complex billing codes which are not the same from one company to another that the office managers often make mistakes, resulting in delays in payment or in outright denial. With a billing and coding certification, you will be in an ideal position to interpret and accurately complete the billing process, saving time, money and frustration for both patients and health care providers.

Plus, thanks to the modern computer age, in many cases you can do all of the work at home with nothing more than a computer, a telephone, and perhaps a fax machine.

Ten Reasons to consider a Home Based Medical Billing and Coding Career

Low start-up costs: Most people already have a computer and a telephone in the home. The addition of some inexpensive filing boxes and fax machine will be enough equipment to get your started. Of course, you will also want your own business cards, but a lot of promotional material you may want can wait until you have a few clients.

Complete your education quickly over the internet, for a rewarding career as a biller and coder specialist.

Provide a needed service to patients as well as to health care providers.

As the baby boomers approach retirement age, insurance filing will only get more complicated. The need for skilled billing and coding professionals is only going to increase. The better you are, the more in demand you will be.

Join the health care field without the stress or demands associated with other health care careers.

Choose your clients and areas. You can be in California and code for doctors in Maine, if you choose. Distance and location are no barrier. You could even work internationally if you desire.

Select the freelance projects you are most interested in.

Take advantage of career assistance offered by the school from which you receive your training courses.

Work on the road. With the assistance of a laptop computer, you won’t need to hire someone to fill in or notify the doctors that you are taking a vacation. You can take your billing and coding career with you wherever you go.

Although there is no set standard of education for Medical Billing and Coding Experts, insurance procedures and legal guidelines are becoming so demanding that health care facilities tend to look for professionals with a certificate and 9 months to 2 years of formal training at a vocational school. Those who acquire the certificate and have a qualified institution behind them will be much more in demand than people who try to pick up the training through informal study. Most companies look for experience and schooling because of the legal ramifications of incorrect billing procedures.

While Biller and Coder experts may work at a large office, for an insurance company or in an actual health care facility, many are finding that a Medical Billing and Coding career is the ideal ‘work-at-home’ job. It’s low start up costs and freedom to choose both the type and quantity of clients, as well as freedom to set ones own working hours, are making it one of the most popular health field careers available. Online Medical Coding Certificate – School of Informatics and Computing: IUPUI, medical billing certification courses.

#Medical #billing #certification #courses

Online Medical Coding Certificate

Reviewing patient records and getting vital health data where it needs to go relies on medical coding. In the Information Age, this system of universal code numbers assures the timely flow of medical data anywhere in the nation or world.

By earning your medical coding certificate through the IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI, you can take your courses online, for maximum convenience. You can even apply credit earned for the certificate toward our Bachelor of Science in health information management.

Certification

Graduates are eligible to seek the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) credential offered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). This certification distinguishes coders who exhibit commitment and demonstrate coding competencies across all settings, including hospitals and physician practices.

A critical part of the health information work flow

Medical coders ensure that insurance companies have the right information and patients know their billing and payment options. Accurate coding gets bills paid, patient data organized, and insurance information verified.

With proper medical coding:

  • Health care providers can precisely record patients’ care, so crucial procedures don’t get missed.
  • Tests and screenings aren’t needlessly repeated, which means patients don’t pay more than they should.
  • Insurers can quickly reimburse providers.

The increasing reliance on data

To make valid decisions, accurate information is key. The medical coder carefully reviews health records for accurate coding and billing. By earning this certificate, you’ll learn to understand medical terminology, private payer policies, and government regulations.

Electronic health records allow doctors, hospitals, and other providers to quickly share information, leading to swift and informed medical decision-making. This information holds great potential as a Big Data resource for analyzing specific codes—a method of studying how conditions progress and are treated on a mega scale.

Emerging technology issues

Data security and patient privacy are paramount in the age of electronic record-keeping. As you earn your certificate, you’ll not only gain understanding of medical coding and reimbursement systems, but also learn:

  • The latest principles in the emerging field of information governance.
  • Legal and ethical concepts of confidentiality and privacy in medicine and health care.

Projected employment growth for medical coders from 2012 to 2022

Careers in medical coding

Medical coders audit inpatient/outpatient health records (both paper and electronic) for appropriate ICD-9/ICD-10 and/or CPT code assignment. Coders also aid in revenue cycle auditing. Medical coders work in hospitals, physician offices, group practices, and insurance companies.

A certificate in medical coding can be the foundation for a variety of positions, including:

Plan of study

The medical coding certificate is a 28-credit-hour program focusing on pathophysiology, pharmacology, coding, medical reimbursement, and basic concepts of health information and is designed to better prepare you to sit for industry standard certifications.

The curriculum includes a unique professional practicum component that integrates classroom instruction with applied, technical experience in an actual health care facility.

Medical Terminology

Medical terminology is the language of healthcare. A solid understanding of this language is important for health care professionals and patients alike.

Healthcare providers use medical terminology to describe body parts, diseases, procedures, equipment, and more. Medical staff must have an understanding of this language in order to communicate effectively with physicians and in order to carry out instructions correctly.

Medical billers, coders, and administrative staff must also understand medical terminology in order to carry out their duties, such as reading and interpreting medical records and assigning medical codes.

Even patients can benefit from a basic understanding of this language, as it can enhance their understanding regarding their own health care and billing situations.

Medical Terminology Examples

Abbreviation : A shortening of a word, often by using the first few initials followed by a period.

Example: The word cardiovascular is abbreviated cardio.

Acronym: Also known as initialism; A type of abbreviation; Makes use of the first letter of each word in a phrase.

Example: The phrase “urinary tract infection” is often written using the acronym UTI.

Eponym: Are a type of abbreviation; Are procedures, discoveries, objects, ect. that are named after an individual (often the founder).

Example: One type of bunionectomy is called a Keller’s procedure.

Learning Medical Terminology

When attempting to learn medical terms it is easier to memorize word parts instead of whole words and their meaning.

By memorizing word parts you can substantially minimize your amount of memorization.

Instead of memorizing the medical terms cardiology, cardiomegaly, and cardiogram you can memorize the word part cardio. which means heart.

In this case the word part -ology means the study of, so cardiology means a study of the heart.

The word part -megaly means enlarged and so the medical term cardiomegaly means heart enlargement.

The word part -gram means a recording of, and so the medical term cardiogram means a recording of the heart.

Word Parts

Word parts fall under one of three categories:

  • Prefixes
  • Suffixes
  • Root Words

Prefixes . These word parts attach to the beginning of a root word in order to modify their meaning.

Example. The root word cardio means heart, but by attaching the prefix brady to the beginning we modify it’s meaning. Since the term brady means slow the medical term bradycardia means “a slow heart beat”.

Suffixes . These word parts attach to the end of root word in order to modify their meaning.

Example. The root word cardio means heart, but by attaching the suffix megaly to the end we modify it’s meaning. Since the suffix megaly means enlarged the medical term cardiomegaly means “heart enlargement”.

Root Words . These word parts provide the basic meanings for medical terms. They can be used alone or can be joined with a prefix, a suffix, or both.

Example 1:(A root word with no prefix or suffix.) The root word “plasma” means a semi-liquid form found in cells.

Example 2:(A prefix and root word conjoined.) The prefix dys- means painful and root word “uria” means urine, together they form the medical term “dysuria” which mean “painful or difficult urination.

Example 3:(A root word and suffix conjoined.) The root word dermat means skin, the suffix ology means the study of, together they form the medical term “dermatology” which means “to study the skin”.

Example 4:(A prefix, root word, and suffix conjoined.) The prefix leuko means white, the root word cyte means cell, and the suffix osis means a condition of. Together these word parts form the term “leukocytosis”, which means “a condiotion of elevated white blood cells”.

Pluralization Forms

Most medical terminology originates from the Greek or Latin languages and so pluralization follows the rules of these languages as well.

In the English language pluralization is most often obtained by adding an -s or -es to the end of a word.

Example: Doctor becomes Doctors; Abscess to Abscesses.

Although there are many Latin and Greek terms that do utilize the -s and -es there are also many medical terms that do not.

The following are the standard pluralization rules:

  • Add -s to words ending in any vowel or consonant except: s, x, z, or y
    Examples: hands and voices
  • Add -es to words ending in s, x, or z
    Examples: reflexes and abscesses
  • Remove the y and add -ies to words ending in y that preceded by a consonant
    Examples: appendectomies and laparoscopies
  • Remove -us and add -i to Latin terms ending in -us
    Examples: staphylococci and umbilici
  • Remove -um and add -a to Latin terms that end in -um
    Examples: bacteria and data
  • Change -sis to -ses in Greek terms ending in -sis
    Examples: paralyses and diureses

Memorization Tips

By choosing to memorize word parts instead of all of medical terminology as a whole you greatly reduce your work load in regards to quantity. Memorization is still required, however, and there is a difference between true memorization and cramming. If your goal is to learn medical terminology AND retain your knowledge then you will need to dedicate yourself to some form of memorization.

Memorization does not have to be a mundane and time consuming task. Studying lists and lists of words for long periods of time is in effective since the mind tires quickly and only tends to hold onto the first handful of terms.

Instead of setting aside a large chunk of study time try using small periods of passive time to memorize just a few terms at a time.

Flash cards may seem old fashioned but they are effective. Carry them with you and flip through them throughout the day during passive time, like waiting at a red light, during your lunch break, or you can put a few in sandwich bags and tape them in your shower. It sounds crazy but it is effective!

Also, finding a way to relate to each term is helpful in the memorization of medical terminology.

Example:The prefix brady- means slow, a gentleman friend of mine said he memorized this term by recalling Tom Brady to mind. He said that since Tom Brady “retired” recently he should be “slowing down”. Although this sounds silly it is a very effective tool.

Remember, the more you have contact with something the more familiar you become with it. Memorizing medical terminology can seem like a monumental task at first but the more you continue to view the terms the more familiar you will become with them, so try to fit a little in every day.

Finally, make sure to rest. Your mind works like a filing cabinet, storing away all of the information from the day while you sleep. Trying to study with a tired mind is like spinning your wheels.

Study Time

Like learning any language, learning medical terminology does require a fair amount of memorization.

The most effective way to go about this is to first break down the whole task into smaller obtainable goals, such as focusing on medical terms first, then moving onto abbreviations. and finally learning eponyms.

Also, instead of memorizing whole words it is better to learn word parts. There are fewer of them and they are interchangeable.

Medical Terminology Text Book

Learning medical terminology independently is very easy if you choose the right book.

A good text book should:

  • Focus on word part memorization
  • Chapters should be divided by organ systems (Ex. Integumentary, Cardiovascular, ect.)
  • Additional chapters on psychology, pathology, oncology, radiology, and pharmacology should be included.

Exam Tips

Knowing medical terminology is very useful when sitting for a certification exam like the CPC.

In addition to knowing your terms it is helpful to know where to find help in your coding books.

The CPT book contains two pages of common medical prefixes, suffixes, root words, and terms.

These pages can be located in the front of the book just before the E/M section.

The back cover of the CPT book also contains common medical abbreviations.

First Steps in a Medical Malpractice Case

Medical malpractice cases are generally sought by patients who have been harmed or injured due to poor medical treatment or mistaken diagnosis from a medical provider such as a doctor, nurse, technician, hospital or medical worker. Typically, the measure of whether a medical provider was “negligent,” or failed to provide proper care. turns on whether the patient would have received the same standard of care from another medical provider under similar circumstances.

While the majority of health care providers aim to exercise the highest standard of care for all patents, there are times when things can go gravely wrong. If you or a loved one has experienced poor medical care, misdiagnosis, lack of consent, or breach of doctor-patient confidentiality that has resulted in harm or injury, you may be entitled to medical malpractice recovery.

Below are some basic first steps in bringing a medical malpractice case.

Contact the Medical Professional Involved

The first step is to contact the doctor or medical professional who works with you before you actually file the claim. Your goal is to get an understanding of what may have gone wrong and allow your doctor to determine whether it is something that can be remedied. In most cases, medical providers are willing to perform services (sometimes free of charge) to correct a problem or provide a solution.

Contact the Relevant Medical Licensing Board

If contacting the medical professional does not help the situation, you may wish to contact the licensing board that governs medical licenses. While licensing boards typically cannot order the professional to compensate you, they can issue warnings or discipline to the practitioner and may be able to provide you with guidance about your next steps.

Know How Long You Have to File a Claim

When deciding whether to file a medical malpractice claim. it is important to find out how much time you have to legally bring the claim. All civil claims, including medical malpractice cases, have time limits as to when they must be filed. These limits, called “statutes of limitations,” require you to file your claim within a certain time period from when the injury occurred, or risk waiving your rights to recover money for your injuries. Check the state laws in your particular state to ensure the time period for filing your claim does not run out.

Get a Medical Assessment to Confirm Your Case Has Merit

A growing number of states require patients to file what is commonly known as a “certificate of merit” to determine that the injuries you suffered was the result of negligence on the part of a health care professional. To file a certificate of merit, must first contact an expert, usually another physician, to review your medical records and certify that the original healthcare provider deviated from accepted medical practices, which resulted in your injuries. The attorney that you hire will now file the certificate of merit, which confirms that you spoke with a medical expert and that your action has merit.

Consider an Out-of-Court Settlement

Medical malpractice cases can be timely and costly, which is why most medical malpractice cases are settled out of court. In addition, because medical malpractice insurance companies reject a significantly large portion of medical malpractice claims, it may be in your best interest to settle out-of-court or risk having no case at all. Keep in mind, however, that if you believe you have a strong case, then you should seek a larger settlement.

Free Initial Claim Review from a Medical Malpractice Lawyer

Finding a qualified medical malpractice attorney can mean the difference between receiving compensation for your injuries and walking away empty-handed. An experienced attorney will be able to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your case and advise you on a course of action moving forward. A good first step in finding the right attorney is to get a free initial claim evaluation from a medical malpractice lawyer .

Facts on Life Insurance without a Medical Exam, Trusted Choice, life insurance without a medical.

#Life #insurance #without #a #medical

No Medical Exam Life Insurance

Many people purchase life insurance to help secure the financial stability of their loved ones after their death. In most cases, you must submit to a medical exam in order to purchase a life insurance policy, because the insurance company wants to assess the risks involved with insuring you. But some insurance companies offer life insurance policies without a medical exam.

How do these policies differ from those that require a medical exam? When is a good time to buy no medical exam life insurance? When should you avoid it?

Leading Causes of Death and Life Expectancy in the U.S.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Center for Health Statistics:

  • The leading causes of death in the U.S. in 2014 were heart disease and cancer.
  • Other causes of death include chronic respiratory diseases, unintentional injuries, diabetes, and motor vehicle crashes.
  • In 2013, the average life expectancy at birth was about 78 years old.

What Is No Medical Exam Life Insurance?

Typically, when you purchase life insurance, you are required to fill out paperwork and submit to medical tests in order for the insurance company to determine if you are eligible for coverage. A nurse or other health practitioner will ask in-depth questions and take blood and urine samples to test for various health conditions that make you riskier to insure.

If you have health problems, you could face significantly increased premiums, or even rejection.

No medical exam life insurance is a way to skip the paperwork and exams and obtain a small amount of life insurance even if you have some health problems. Basically, it is a way for you to get life insurance without a physical exam. No exam life insurance is also commonly referred to as “guaranteed issue” and “simplified issue” life insurance. These policies are often marketed to older people who might have medical issues that make getting other life insurance difficult.

No medical exam life insurance policies are term life insurance policies, often with a relatively low face value. Term life insurance policies pay a death benefit if the insured person dies within the policy term, such as 10, 20, or 30 years. No medical exam policies often have lower face values, but can be purchased for larger amounts, such as $250,000 to $500,000.

You can obtain term life insurance quotes for no exam coverage with no medical exam and perhaps only a few medical questions. Your premiums may be higher based on your answers. This may seem like a fast, easy way to get life insurance, but because the insurance company has no insight into your health condition, your premium will be much higher for the amount of coverage that you buy.

The Two Types of No Medical Exam Life Insurance

Guaranteed issue life insurance. Also called guaranteed acceptance life insurance, this does not require a medical exam, nor does the insurance company review your medical records. Usually you will be required to answer only four simple questions:

  • Do you smoke?
  • Are you currently in a hospital or long-term care facility?
  • Do you have AIDS or HIV?
  • Have you been declared terminally ill?

Guaranteed issue policies can provide some level of protection and comfort for you. But they are also extremely expensive relative to other forms of life insurance, and offer a relatively low benefit.

Simplified issue life insurance. This typically does not require a medical exam, but the insurance company will ask more detailed medical questions and may ask to view your medical records. You may be rejected for coverage if you have certain medical issues.

When to Buy No Medical Exam Life Insurance

No medical exam life insurance is often marketed as affordable, convenient, and fast. While this is somewhat true, it is still not the right solution for everyone. Only certain people will truly benefit from purchasing no exam life insurance.

  • If you have a chronic health condition like diabetes that is not under control, purchasing life insurance can be expensive or impossible. You may be able to purchase guaranteed issue life insurance in these cases.
  • If you cannot wait to purchase a fully underwritten policy, no exam life insurance may be a good option. These policies can sometimes be issued in as little as a few days.
  • If you have a risky occupation or participate in a risky hobby, you might have a hard time getting life insurance that utilizes a complete underwriting process, even if you are healthy.
  • If you are older or have a serious health condition and want to help your loved ones pay for funeral or final expenses, a no medical exam life insurance policy may help give you peace of mind.
  • If you have health problems and your employer does not offer group life insurance, no exam life insurance may be a good option for you. Employer-provided life insurance is usually obtainable even for those with health problems, and it is usually very affordable for small amounts of coverage. But if you lose your job or your employer stops offering the coverage, you may be a good candidate for no medical exam life insurance if you have no other options.

If these circumstances do not apply to you, and you want to provide for more than just final expenses, no medical exam life insurance is probably not for you. Young, healthy individuals with families typically need enough life insurance coverage to pay off a home mortgage and other outstanding debt and provide some income replacement for their spouse and children.

You may also want life insurance to fund your children’s education and other future plans. Under most circumstances, submitting to the medical tests and underwriting process will be the best option for obtaining appropriate life insurance that achieves your goals and gives you peace of mind.

How to Find No Medical Exam Life Insurance

Even if you need life insurance fast and no medical exam coverage is your only alternative, you still need to do your homework. Get quotes from multiple insurance companies and make sure that the death benefit and premium amount are satisfactory for your needs and budget. Also, be sure to check out the financial stability of your insurance carrier. You can review insurance company ratings through A.M. Best, Standard Poor’s, and other financial information services.

Free Medical Billing Training – Good Free Resources to Learn Billing and Coding, medical coding and billing online courses.

#Medical #coding #and #billing #online #courses

Free Medical Billing Training

Free Medical Billing Training. Find out what Free will get you. You’ve heard the old saying – If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. But there are some resources for learning about the medical billing process for free or reasonable cost.

A free introduction to the important concepts of medical billing and coding. Over an hour of video instruction. Covers many of the important subjects from the more comprehensive Medical Billing Fundamentals course ( Includes over $78 in FREE Material ).

There are some free “Mini Courses” online that are simply a very generalized document about medical billing and coding. It’s usually a document a few pages long or a short video presentation that gives a sample of their material. The hope is that you’ll be impressed enough to commit to purchasing the entire training program.

Be careful – I fell for this and spent several hundred dollars. It was an impressive looking website and slick marketing. Once I purchased all I received was a notebook of general information I could have easily found on the internet. Boy did I feel like a fool! And forget trying to get a refund.

Look out for Scams – Hold On to Your Credit Card

Also be wary of free medical billing training trial programs that require you to enter credit card information before viewing their “free” material. Supposedly if you decide not to take the complete course you have to call to cancel. I’m suspicious of anybody that wants a credit card up front. Once they get your credit card number it can be very difficult to get a refund or prevent them from charging you.

I’ve done this with other “free” offers before and found it almost impossible to cancel and get them to stop charging my credit card.

There are ways you can get free medical billing training. However the quality of the training may be lacking.

Get Real World Experience

Offer to work part time for a medical billing service for free – for a limited time of course. When I was anxious to learn medical billing, I offered to work for free. My thinking was that is a great way to get hands-on real world training.

I had a friend who started a medical billing business and was very busy. I talked to her about how she got started and asked for her advice. During our conversations I offered to work for free for a short time until I learned enough to start my own business.

Medical billing is the sort of work that can be done at home easily. Fortunately they didn’t take me up on the free part but did pay me for part time work from home. To me that was like getting paid to learn!

I started out working on insurance aging which involved calling insurance companies to follow up on unpaid claims and determine why they were rejected. I got progressively more experience and responsibilities until I felt comfortable marketing my own business.

If you are starting a medical billing business, this type of work is an excellent way gain experience and cultivate contacts with other people in the field – such as doctors, office managers, and other billers and coder.

There is a website called Quizlet which the worlds largest online student and teacher community. Their mission is to help students master the subjects they are learning. Quizlet has an almost overwhelming amount of medical billing and coding lessons, study guides, and tests from a wide variety of credible students and teachers.

Best of all it’s FREE!

Even better than free medical billing training is the thought of getting paid to learn. As mentioned above, any environment you can get into – even for pay that is less than the going rate – that allows you some experience in the field is a great help toward getting trained. This would be short term of course.

Consider opportunities at a medical billing services company, hospital or doctors office, or insurance company. Anything that gets you exposed to the field looks good on your resume. Remember your goal is getting experience – so a short term sacrifice in pay may be worth it to prove yourself and get good references.

One of the requirements I notice in medical billing job postings is experience in the field – probably more than training or credentials for medical billing. That’s why getting any experience you can is important. In this field there are many things that can’t be taught in a classroom environment.

Update 2017 – п»їVideoTrainingPro.comп»ї used to offer very good free medical billing training video’s. However they have recently removed them from their site. They seem to be concentrating on just Window’s training now. Not sure why as they were very well done.

If we can find where they have been moved to we will post a new link. They had an extensive (113) catalog of video’s on just about anything a medical billing specialist does.

Research the Internet for Free Medical Billing Training

There’s so much information from credible sources available on the internet on medical billing. You can educate yourself and find information on just about any topic. The challenge is being able to separate the credible and knowledgeable from the pretenders.

Even on this site I try to document my experiences, information, and other free medical billing training resources that may be helpful to others getting started in the medical billing and coding profession.

I found it can be difficult to find any in-depth information on particular topics. This takes a lot of time. There is a lot of online information on medical billing that seems to be almost entirely dedicated to marketing and not educating. These sites are just trying to sell something. Or on the opposite end of the spectrum having so much information that it’s overwhelming.

An example of this would be the HIPAA. There’s a tremendous amount of information about HIPAA available at CMS – The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services . But trying to determine what is relevant and applicable to a small practice is almost overwhelming as there are so many facets of HIPAA.

A lot of billing services are smart to educate themselves well on HIPAA (and other industry issues) and use this to educate, and market to, small practices. This is a great way to open doors and establish yourself as an expert.

American Association of Professional Coders ( AAPC ) is also has some great info on medical billing – although their main concentration is coding.

Other Free Medical Billing Training Resources

We’ve added free resources to this site to help those wanting to learn medical billing. These are also listed on our medical billing resources page:

Our free Medical Billing Terms eBook is a quick reference of medical billing terms we’ve compiled to help understand the terminology of medical billing. It’s a PDF file we will email to you at the link above which you can save locally or print out.

Our Medical Billing and Coding Careers Guide is a 15 page overview of medical billing for those considering a career in medical billing or a medical coding career. It’s kind of a condensed compilation of information available on the site in more detail. It may be helpful as a free medical billing training resource to explain the basics.

Something else that would have been helpful to me when getting into medical billing was something that explained how an insurance claim is processed.

The Medical Billing Insurance Claim Flowchart is another free medical billing training tool that shows a very simple flowchart explaining how healthcare claim processing works and how insurance claims billing works.

Our Medical Billing Books page has links to several affordable individual books on the fundamentals of medical billing from reputable sources. Many of our visitors have found these to be a great economical way to learn medical billing fundamentals.

Life Insurance with ‘No Medical’

By Kevin Pratt on Monday 22 May 2017

In this Article

Term insurance without medical exam

Life insurance with no medical simply refers to taking out cover and having no requirement to complete any medical checks. Whether or not you’re able to take out cover with no medical, depends on certain health and lifestyle factors.

When applying for life insurance, the insurer will ask you a range of questions regarding your health and lifestyle. It’s how you respond to these questions which will influence whether or not you require a medical examination.

When you might need a medical

When you apply for life cover, you will be asked several questions about your lifestyle and health. If you’ve never had any major medical issues, and you aren’t a smoker, then the risk of you claiming on your life insurance policy will be much lower than someone with pre-existing medical problems. As a result, you may well be offered cover without a medical, whereas if your medical history is more complicated and you do have health problems, you are likely to need one.

It’s likely you’ll be asked for a medical if one or more of these scenarios applies to you:

  • You’ve disclosed pre-existing medical conditions on your application
  • If you’ve been refused cover in the past
  • If you’re looking for a large amount to be insured for
  • Your family has a history of hereditary diseases
  • If you’ve lived abroad for extended periods

Each insurer has their own criteria for seeking medical exams from applicants and will give different levels of importance to each of the above.

Whatever your medical history, most insurers will ask for permission to contact your doctor so they can get a fuller picture of your medical history before they offer you cover.

How are life insurance premiums calculated?

Insurers will look at a whole range of factors to help them decide at what level to set your life insurance premiums. These include, but are not limited, to the following:

  • Your age, weight, height, sex
  • How much alcohol you drink each week
  • Whether or not you are a smoker
  • Your family’s medical history
  • Your occupation
  • Whether you have had any medical conditions in the past, or any which you are currently being treated for.

How to reduce the cost of cover

The healthier you are, the lower your premiums are likely to be, so the more steps you can take to improve your health, the better. Losing weight will also have an impact, as statistically you are likely to live longer if you aren’t overweight, so there is less risk for insurers that they will have to pay out.

The importance of giving the correct information

It’s vital to be honest when giving answers to insurance companies, as if you aren’t truthful and then need to make a claim, your policy could be invalidated.

Even though it might be tempting, for example, to tell insurers that you stopped smoking years ago, if you die and it is revealed you are a smoker, any claim will be refused. The same goes for any pre-existing medical conditions – if you keep them under wraps but ultimately they are a contributing factor towards your death, your policy won’t pay out.

What else you should know

When you take out life insurance, you should consider writing your policy ‘in trust’, so that you don’t have to pay inheritance tax on any pay out. Inheritance tax is payable at 40% on anything you leave over £325,000 when you die. So, if any life insurance pay out pushes your estate above this threshold, inheritance tax will be payable, unless the policy has been written in trust.

This simply means that any payment on death will then be outside of your estate for inheritance tax purposes.

It’s a good idea to seek professional legal and tax advice before setting up a trust, so that you can be sure you have the right arrangement in place to suit your individual requirements.

Online Medical Coding Certificate – School of Informatics and Computing: IUPUI, medical coding and billing online certification.

#Medical #coding #and #billing #online #certification

Medical Billing and Coding Degrees

Medical insurance billing and coding degree

Most medical billers and coders entering the profession hold a two-year associate s degree. Because this career path is in high demand, you ll find a variety of schools offering medical billing and coding degree options, including diploma, certificate, associate s and bachelor s degrees.

When deciding which one is right for you, you should consider several different factors that could influence your choice including family obligations and future career plans. If you are interested in management positions, earning a bachelor s degree in health information management or a related subject will help.

Medical Billing Coding Degree Options

You ll want to consider the different facets of each type of degree program. For example, a certificate program will allow you to enter the workforce quicker, but you may earn a higher salary with an associate s or bachelor s degree.

  • Certificate or Diploma: Certificate and diploma programs generally take nine months to one year to complete. These programs are offered by career colleges and community colleges. Career college programs usually have a faster time to completion.
  • Associate s degree: Associate s programs last two years and provide general education curriculum that goes beyond medical billing and coding degree information. Both career colleges and community colleges offer associate s degree programs. If you are planning on advancing your education later in your career, the credits you earn while in your associate s program courses will count toward earning a bachelor s or master s degree.
  • Bachelor s degree: At the bachelor s level, colleges and universities offer programs in health information management and health care administration, which take four years to complete and provide other general education curriculum. Earning a bachelor s degree will provide you with greater career options and can qualify you for management positions.

Anatomy and Physiology: Anatomy and physiology will give you a basic understanding of the human body s organ systems, their functions and how they work together.

Insurance Claim Procedures: All medical billing and coding courses will offer a version of this class, which will train you in the standard procedures for filing an insurance claim.

Medical Coding: Typical coding workshops in a medical billing and coding course will teach you how to apply Current Procedural Technology (CPT), International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes.

Medical Office Administration: Provides basic knowledge of how to keep a medical office running smoothly. You will learn how to take care of routine tasks such as greeting patients, scheduling appointments and handling other various clerical work.

Medical Billing Training Program Red-Flags You Should Avoid

Medical billing courses online

The good news is that medical billing and other medical record keeping jobs are growing, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. More good news is that medical billing can be learned and done from home. However, like other areas of working at home, scammers are duping unsuspecting would-be medical information technicians out of their money and their home-based career dreams.

Quality online medical billing courses exist and it s easy to learn what s involved and how to find a good program.

However, by learning the red-flags in questionable programs, you have an additional knowledge to help you weed out the scams.

Here is a list of things to avoid when searching for a reputable medical billing program.

  1. Programs promoted with a lot of hype, especially with a focus on working at home without a lot of experience.
  2. Programs not taught by by experienced medical billers, medical coders, or a successful medical billing business owner.
  3. Medical billing training offered by educational clearinghouse (school that teaches everything from accounting to zoology). The problem with EC s is that you re not taught the in-depth information you need to be proficient within the medical billing industry.
  4. Programs that insist it takes two years to complete, unless one of the following applies:
    • Your current situation doesn t allow you to dedicated the necessary time to complete the course sooner,
    • Your course also consists of additional subjects such as medical transcription, medical coding or healthcare management,
    • Your course also prepares you to sit for one of the National Certification Exams given by the The American Medical Billing Association (AMBA), The American Academy Of Professional Coders (AAPC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
  1. Training programs that don t cover the essential aspects of doing medical billing including anatomy, medical terminology, coding, insurance rules, and billing software programs.
  2. Medical billing programs that are more than $1,200. However if your course also includes classes on becoming a nationally certified medical coder or medical transcriptionist, then the cost could get as high as $2,500.
  1. Medical billing training is separate from certification, so programs that promise certification should be suspect. After your training, you can get certified, but certification isn t included in training. Note, only three organizations, such as American Association of Professional Coders, award medical billing certifications, which involves a lengthy and extensive exam. When you take a course the most that they can give you is called a Certificate Of Completion which means that you satisfied the requirements of the course and have been awarded the certificate as proof that you did.
  2. Program that don t offer several payment options. Depending on where you take the course (i.e. a community college), you might even be eligible for financial assistance.
  3. Medical billing training that doesn t allow you to speak with past or current students. Not providing references is a red flag.

When you find a program you like, do your research. Don t be afraid to ask questions, such as how long has the school been around and is it accredited, what is the credentials and experience of the instructors, does the program prepare you for the certification test, what are payment options and is there a refund policy, and is there help in finding jobs or clients?

If you feel you ve been scammed by a medical billing program, there are a few things you can do, including reporting the program and contacting your payment processor to report the fraud.

Like other work-at-home industries, the home based medical billing industry has scams and questionable programs. However, that shouldn t keep you from becoming a medical biller. Instead, learn all you can about the industry including how to choose a reputable training program, and how to find legitimate medical billing jobs or start a home business.

article continued from above.

However, trying to educate yourself through methods that avoid college courses or classes may not be the best method of insuring that you will have a job once you have the knowledge. The two terms “billing” and “coding,” actually involve two different jobs which are often performed by the same person. Medical billing involves collecting data for all aspects of a claim, helping to make sure the medical facility is performing efficiently. Coding, on the other hand, is the application of the correct code to every medical procedure used in a particular case. Without correct codes, the insurance companies are unable to make correct, speedy payment. Both jobs require knowledge of medical procedures, anatomy and terminology along with an understanding of how the insurance industry operates.

The medical field has evolved dramatically over the past 10 to 15 years alone. The arrival of the Affordable Care Act has resulted in complex levels of medical coding; the new CD-10 has changed to available codes from just over 13,000 to 144,000. If the wrong code is entered on a bill, the doctor stands to lose thousands of dollars, both in the cost of refiling and in fines and reductions in payment from the insurance company. In fact, it is possible for a physician to lose his practice because of coding errors. As for lost revenue, Ruthann Russo, executive director of HP3 Healthcare Concepts, says that a review of one 200 physician multi-specialty group revealed that an estimated $10 million was simply lost because staff involved had not correctly billed the services.

Get Educated

These changes actually mean that billing and coding is as great a career opportunity as ever; in fact one national survey reports that there are 30% more positions than there are people to fill them, and the shortage is expected to increase. But doctors can no longer afford to take a chance on people who claim to know the business but have no formal training. Doctors are urged to hire personnel with AHIMA or APC certification, who have taken courses with AHIMA approved trainers. You may be expected to take courses in Health Information Management, Pharmacology, and Legal compliance as well as the courses in coding. However, don’t feel overwhelmed. Many schools have designed their programs to be completed in as little as four months. Those who complete the course work, a practicum, and pass the test receive certification and are considered billing and coding specialists.

Use our convenient service to research the education programs and get started on your own billing and coding career.

Get Paid

The pay for a billing/coding specialist varies from state to state but according to the BLS, the mean annual wage for Medical Records and Health Information Technicians overall, is about $38,860.

Free Medical Billing Training – Good Free Resources to Learn Billing and Coding, online medical coding and billing classes.

#Online #medical #coding #and #billing #classes

Online Medical Billing and Coding Schools, medical billing and coding online schools.

Click here visit the AAPC website.

Online Medical Billing/Coding Programs

Medical billing and coding online schoolsPenn Foster Career Schools offers a certification in medical billing and coding that takes only six months to complete, with low tuition rates, customized payment plans or 0 percent APR financing for students on a budget. Cost of the program is $730 when paid in full and $800 to $890 when choosing a payment plan. In addition, flexible class scheduling also allows busy students the ability to extend the six month program for as long as they need to complete assignments and exams.

Penn Foster is accredited by the Commission on Secondary Schools of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council, which is a member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

To be eligible for participation in an online medical billing and coding course, students need to have a high school diploma or GED (general equivalency/education diploma) and either scan or fax a copy of the document to the school s administrative office.

Accredited Online Medical Coding Training Guide for 2018

Medical billers and coders perform an important role in medical offices. They convert different health issues and the medical treatments for those issues. These codes are a simple way for medical offices to communicate information to health insurance companies when they are billed for the health services that were provided to their client.

A medical billing degree is available in the form of associate degrees or certificate, whether you participate in a traditional program or earn a medical coding degree online.

If you want to begin a career as a medical coder, you should be aware that the best programs are accredited by either the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or as the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). It is also possible to earn an education at the certificate and associate degree levels. No matter what level of education you earn, it is a good idea to become certified in the field as well. Check the Guide to Accreditation in Higher Education to learn more about accreditation and how to determine if the program you select meets the necessary standards.

TABLE of CONTENTS

Degrees

An education in medical billing and coding prepares you to be an integral part of the healthcare system. You will learn to apply special codes to different illnesses and treatment procedures in order to make the process of billing patients easier for physician’s offices and insurance companies.

Medical coding does not require extended formal education before you can begin a job. Although you can earn a traditional or online degree, you can also qualify for jobs in this field without a degree if you become a certified medical biller and coder. Even the best medical billing degree online and traditional programs only offer associate degrees, since this is considered the highest level of education in the field. If you choose not to earn a medical billing online degree or complete a degree from a brick-and-mortar school, it is a good idea to complete a certification program. Having some education, like a certificate, will greatly improve your job prospects. If you decide to pursue an associate degree or certificate, you can either learn through traditional programs or get your medical billing and coding degree online.

Certificate in Medical Coding

Before a medical employer hires you to organize and manage their patients’ healthcare information, they usually want to be sure that you have at least a certificate from an accredited program. You can earn an accredited medical coding certificate online or through a traditional classroom-based program. Earning your medical billing certificate costs less money and takes less time than earning an associate degree because it offers a smaller number of focused classes.

  • Credit hours/length of study: 15-18 credit hours
  • Coursework: medical billing, medical coding, administrative processes, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology; in some cases, an internship to practice skills
  • Employment prospects: entry-level medical coding or medical billing

Associate Degree in Medical Coding

An associate degree is the highest level of education that you can earn in this field. It is considered the premier education for people who are interested in a medical coding career. Therefore, your job prospects will be greatly improved if you are willing to earn an associate degree instead of halting your education after earning a certificate or completing a professional exam preparation course.

  • Credit hours/length of study: 60-65 credit hours
  • Coursework: clinical classification systems, insurance procedures, anatomy and medical terminology
  • Employment prospects: medical coder or biller, possibly in a supervisory role
