National Australia Bank says home loans demand kicked back again #bridge #loans

Home loan volumes have recovered after the big banks jacked up rates, NAB’s finance chief says. Photo: Louise Kennerley

National Australia Bank is confident about the prospects for corporate and mortgage lending despite the nation’s slowing economy and recent signs that property prices may fall.

Home lending has kicked back again after the recent increase in mortgage rates. NAB’s Chief Financial Officer Craig Drummond said in a telephone interview on Tuesday. At the same time, record-low interest rates and a falling currency have helped sectors of the economy such as tourism, education and health care, stimulating demand for business loans,

We are very relaxed about the medium-term outlook for Australia, Mr Drummond said. The Australian economy has solid growth rates underpinned by a competitive currency, access to strongish growth of the Asian region and very pristine credit quality.

Mortgage demand

Demand for home loans faltered only briefly after Australia’s big banks last month announced the first mortgage-rate increase in five years, Mr Drummond said. The big four have jacked up home loan rates blaming the cost of holding more regulatory capital as regulators imposed tougher standards to cool the housing market.

After the rate rise, we saw a few quieter weeks, but now volumes have kicked back up again, Mr Drummond said. They are not perceptibly lower than where they were a year ago.

Still, there are signs that the large increases in house prices in Sydney and Melbourne are starting to cool. The proportion of successful home auctions in Sydney dropped to the lowest since March 2013 last week, as buyers balked at a 47 per cent rise in dwelling values in the three years to October 31. Economists from Macquarie Group to Bank of America Merrill Lynch have forecast a decline in prices over the next two years.

‘Distractions’ removed

Meanwhile, consumer and business confidence has improved as a result of the weaker Aussie dollar and greater political certainty after Malcolm Turnbull became Prime Minister in September, Mr Drummond said. NAB has seen an uptick in corporate credit demand since the change of power, he added.

NAB last month revealed rising competition for business customers had forced it to cut interest rates on company loans, crunching its profit margins .

Taking away the distractions of its overseas markets, the bank is now free to focus on loans to businesses and home owners in Australia and New Zealand, the finance chief said.

Mr Drummond and chief executive Andrew Thorburn have led NAB’s push to exit underperforming assets overseas and focus on markets closer to home. The lender has sold its US businesses and is in the process of spinning off its UK unit.

The Australian economy has expanded below the 30-year average annual growth rate of 3.3 per cent for six of the past seven years, as the mining investment boom ended and China’s economy slowed, prompting the RBA to drop rates to a record low.

On the other hand, the 32 per cent drop in the Aussie dollar since the start of 2013 has helped exporters and firms in tourism, health care and education, which benefit from more foreign visitors. Business credit expanded at 6.3 per cent in September from a year earlier, the fastest pace in almost seven years, central bank data show.

The overarching goal of Cooperative Orthotic and Prosthetic Enterprise (COPE) is to ensure that people with physical disabilities have local, free access to a quality, nationally-managed rehabilitation service. To do this in a sustainable manner COPE s strategy has been to partner long term with the Government of Laos’ (GOL) Center for Medical Rehabilitation (CMR) through which all Government s physical rehabilitation work, excluding military personnel, takes place.

COPE and CMR have worked together since 1997, the year COPE was founded, and have developed a strong and productive working relationship. In 1996, the year before COPE was formed, existing services fitted a total of 138 mobility devices throughout Lao PDR. Since 2012, more one thousand orthotic and prosthetic devices are being produced annually. Approximately one third of patients are women and children.

Throughout the last decade, COPE has remained the only charity organization in Lao PDR to offer ongoing support to the GOL s P O department. This support has included material and equipment and important technical capacity building and training of GoL prosthetic and orthotic technicians, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

In accordance with the consensus statements from the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO), COPE introduced polypropylene technology into Lao PDR using the system designed by the International Committee of the Red Cross Special Fund for the Disabled (ICRC-SFD): this is a tried and tested technology for robust, individually-made, high quality, low-cost devices.

In order to reach people with disabilities, many of whom live in remote and rural locations, COPE works through the GOL s system of regional networks, with the main rehabilitation centre in Vientiane supporting satellite Provincial Rehabilitation Centres (PRCs) in four provinces: Luang Prabang, Xiang Khuang, Savannakhet and Champassak.

COPE opened a Visitor Center in 2008 with the aim to increase awareness about disability in Laos and highlight the amazing work that is being done to help people with disabilities lead full and productive lives. It also presents the unexploded ordnance (UXO) problem in Laos and how it links in with disability. The Visitor Center is open seven days a week from 9:00-18:00 and is suitable for all ages. We also run a cafe and gift shop. All profit generated from the Visitor Center goes back into the rehabilitation project.

COPE’s office and administration of the project is undertaken in Vientiane and is independently audited.

When Can You Claim a Tax Deduction for Health Insurance?

Each year, June 28 marks National Insurance Awareness Day, serving as a reminder that it’s a good time to review your insurance coverage and ensure that it still fits your needs.

This is particularly true for health insurance and making sure you have the right amount of coverage at an affordable cost.

Health insurance can be expensive, so being able to claim a tax deduction for some of your insurance costs can help you save come tax time.

Since there are specific rules and qualifications you must follow, here’s an overview of when you can and cannot claim a tax deduction on your health insurance.

When health insurance is not tax-deductible

If you didn’t pay for health insurance, you can’t take a tax deduction for it. If your employer pays your health insurance premiums, you can’t deduct those costs. However, if an employer only pays for part of your premiums, you still may be able to claim a tax deduction for the portion you paid.

If you received a subsidy or premium tax credit to purchase an insurance plan in the Health Insurance Marketplace through the Affordable Care Act, any advanced-payment subsidy that lowered the cost of your health insurance premiums cannot be claimed as a tax deduction. However, the money you paid out of your own pocket for your premiums might be tax deductible.

You can’t take a deduction for health insurance you paid for with pre-tax money. If you have insurance through your employer, the premiums you pay are usually taken out of your paycheck before your income taxes are calculated. Since these premiums are paid with pre-tax dollars, they’re already income-tax-free, meaning you can’t claim them as a tax deduction.

Also note, you can not deduct health insurance unless you itemize your tax deductions or you are self-employed. You don t need to know if you qualify for itemized tax deductions, TurboTax will figure it out for you.

When health insurance is tax-deductible

If you’re self-employed, your health insurance premiums may be tax deductible. If you’re self-employed and not eligible for an employer-sponsored health plan through a spouse’s job, you may be eligible to write-off your health insurance premiums on your taxes. However, you can’t write off more in health insurance premiums than you earned.

Health insurance premiums paid with your own after-tax dollars are tax deductible. For example, if you purchased health insurance on your own through a health insurance exchange or directly from an insurance company, the money you paid toward your monthly premiums can be taken as a tax deduction.

Some Medicare plans are tax deductible. This includes Medicare Part B and Part D prescription coverage.

There are limits to the amount of your health insurance you can deduct. If you are able to write-off your health insurance, there are limits to how much of your premiums you can write off.

If you’re able to claim your health insurance as a medical expense deduction. you can only deduct medical expenses that exceed 10% of your adjusted gross income (7.5% if you’re 65 or older). If you’re self-employed and claimed the self-employed health insurance deduction, you don’t have to exceed the 10% threshold because you’re writing the premiums off as an adjustment to your self-employment income rather than as a tax deduction deduction.

As with all tax laws, TurboTax is up-to-date with the latest tax law changes. If you have more questions about the Affordable Care Act and how it impacts you and your taxes, you can get answers from TurboTax Health .

When police found 46-year-old Shauna Tiaffay, a Las Vegas cocktail waitress and mother brutally murdered in her own home on Sept. 29, it seemed like a random crime. But today, prosecutors are saying her husband George Tiaffay, 40, was the mastermind behind the gruesome attack. They have accused Tiaffay of offering 37-year-old Noel Stevens, a homeless man, $20,000 to beat his once-beautiful bride to death.

“I felt that the minute I heard that the way that she had died, that he [George Tiaffay] had something to do with it,” Shauna Tiaffay’s friend Claudia Carrillo told ABC News.

According to the arrest report, police received a tip from a “concerned citizen” stating that Stevens, a friend of his, was paid to kill Shauna Tiaffay, and that he “hit the woman so hard with a hammer that the hammer broke.” Stevens reportedly told police he did odd jobs for George Tiaffay.

After obtaining search warrants, a black dress was found in one of the tents set up by Stevens, which was the same size that Shauna Tiaffay wore. At the second, several women’s thong panties and a pair of jeans with blood on the front later found to be Shauna’s.

Carrillo and Stephanie Vargas, two of Shauna’s best friends, are now breaking their silence, saying that they believe George Tiaffay was a verbally abusive husband.

“He was known for being controlling with her and I think this is a case of him trying to control her,” Carrillo said.

Vargas agrees that George Tiaffay was very possessive of Shauna.

“[He was] one of those — if I can’t have her, nobody else can,” Vargas said.

Police say the evidence speaks for itself, and that the details of the alleged murder plot read like a crime novel.

Investigators say George Tiaffay was in constant contact with Stevens, calling him 86 times in September. The two even exchanged phone calls in the moments before police believe Shauna was murdered.

Police also say they obtained surveillance video of the two men walking out of a hardware store together, after purchasing a hammer, gloves and knife.

Overnight, Stevens’ attorney refused to comment. But George Tiaffay’s lawyer issued a statement on behalf of his family.

“George did not commit the crimes he is charged with,” he said in the statement.”While all marriages have their ups and downs, George and Shauna were both committed to each other, and especially their daughter.”

But Shauna’s friends are still not convinced that George had nothing to with her death.

“To become a fireman and help people, how is it that you want to save lives but you take a life?” Carrillo said.

Tiaffay and Stevens were ordered to be back in court on Jan. 24, 2013, ABC affiliate KTNV reported
