Nursing

UTA provides advanced and comprehensive education that prepares graduates for careers as health care leaders, innovators, and researchers. Our programs are challenging, but our graduates know the value and quality of a UTA education and what it means to be a Maverick nurse.

The BSN program is designed for individuals seeking to become a registered nurse. The RN to BSN program is designed for practicing registered nurses with associate or diploma degrees who are seeking to advance their education and obtain a BSN. These programs are offered in both on-campus and online format. You can choose either format.

Our master s specialty degrees prepare students for advanced practice, management and research endeavors to address a changing health care landscape. Both full-time and part-time study options are available as well as online and classroom-based programs.

The Department of Kinesiology accepts students for two undergraduate degree programs and two master’s level programs, a new Ph.D. in Kinesiology, and a Public Health program scheduled to begin in Fall 2017.

Our faculty mentors and advising staff are dedicated to the success of our students. We also offer peer mentors and a variety of student organizations that enhance the academic experience and build professional skills.

Students are encouraged to apply for the many scholarships available through the University and those established by the College of Nursing and Health Innovation, outside agencies, and individuals. Scholarship services and counseling are available through the Office of Enrollment and Student Services.

An associate’s degree in nursing is now available through the Dr. Tracy and Debbie Dobbs Nursing Department at Southwest Baptist University’s Salem campus. After a successful site visit on Friday, April 28, the first classes will be offered beginning June 5.

SBU Enactus finishes in top 8 at national competition

Southwest Baptist University Enactus matched its best result in the Enactus U.S. National Exposition by placing in the top eight after finishing runner-up in its league in the semifinals at the competition held May 21-23 at the Kansas City Convention Center.

The research process as a basis for scientific nursing knowledge is examined. The steps in the research process are identified, discussed, and developed into a proposal. This didactic and clinical course is designed to prepare students to acquire skills in nursing management in health care systems. The student will synthesize management theory and evidence pertaining to management processes, as well as developing the skills of delegation, conflict management, and leadership. Legal and ethical issues are discussed with a focus on personal accountability and responsibility. Standards of practice and the significance of functioning according to state regulations and statutes are analyzed. This seminar course helps students synthesize selected nursing concepts and apply them to professional, autonomous nursing practice. Portland Community College

National Standards, Local Expertise

Located at the Sylvania Campus, PCC’s Nursing program is approved by the Oregon State Board of Nursing and accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc. (ACEN). In our program, you will learn the knowledge and skills required for an entry-level nursing job, and qualify to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, which is a requirement for practice. Our program is designed to prepare the student to be licensed as a registered nurse (RN). RNs deliver nursing care in a variety of healthcare settings.

In 2010 PCC became a member of the Oregon Consortium for Nursing Education (OCNE). This coalition of statewide nursing educators and programs consists of Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), Portland Community College, Umpqua Community College, Southwestern Oregon Community College, Rogue Community College, Lane Community College, Clackamas Community College, Mount Hood Community College, Blue Mountain Community College, Treasure Valley Community College and Clatsop Community College. OCNE schools have the same prerequisites and comparable application processes for students.

Admitted Nursing students will have the option of completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing at Oregon Health and Science University after successfully completing two years at PCC. For more information please visit OHSU Community College Transitions page. PCC also has a formal articulation agreement with Linfield College School of Nursing. PCC students are provisionally accepted into the RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program during their final term.

ITT Nursing teach-out

In addition to PCC’s Nursing program, which is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and is affiliated with the Oregon Consortium for Nursing Education (OCNE), PCC is providing support to the teach-out of the Breckinridge School of Nursing formerly at ITT Technical Institute, which closed its doors in September 2016. The teach-out is only for Breckinridge students in the Portland area and includes only the last five quarters of the Breckinridge program. The two programs are separate, with different courses (NRS prefix for the PCC program and NUB prefix for the Breckinridge program) and are administered separately by different directors. The Breckinridge program is not accredited by ACEN nor is it affiliated with OCNE. PCC’s support of the teach-out of the program is being provided at the request of and with the financial support of Oregon’s Higher Education Coordinating Commission and will run from January 2017 through March 2018, at which time it will cease to exist. First Step to BSN

The First Step to BSN Program helps adult students who have little or no prior college credits to progress toward earning their degrees. First Step features an 18-month rotation of online and accelerated core courses created specifically for adult students. After completing the First Step to BSN Program, students are prepared to apply to Union University’s Accelerated BSN Program, where they can earn their Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree in 15 months or the Traditional BSN Program.

Are You Eligible?

A First Step student must be a graduate of an accredited high school or have a state high school equivalency diploma and be at least 24 years of age. The following items must be submitted to be considered for admissions: application for admission, $50 application fee, official transcripts from all accredited institutions attended, high school transcript/GED if less than 24 college credit hours achieved, a personal statement describing why they desire to attend Union University, their personal career goals and reflect their interest in the field of nursing. Two letters of recommendation on provided forms are also required.

  6. Personal Statement: Complete the personal statement found in the First Step to BSN Application. Your personal statement should be a brief description of why you desire to attend Union University, your personal career goals and reflect your interest in the field of nursing.
  7. If you are not a U.S. citizen, an international application must be completed and submitted with the BSN application. All international transcripts must be evaluated by an accredited evaluating agency found at the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services’ website: www.naces.org
  8. Applications which are incomplete by the application deadlines will be considered ineligible for admission and will not be processed.

First graduating class, 1908

The Washington University School of Nursing, originally called the Training School for Nurses, was organized in 1905. The three-year, non-collegiate program led to a diploma in nursing. The first class, numbering five, was graduated in 1908. At that time, theoretical and practical instruction was given to the student nurses by the clinical and laboratory teachers of the Medical School, as well as by the staff of the Training School. The early course of instruction covered anatomy, physiology, pathology, bacteriology, chemistry, dietetics, obstetrics, medical and surgical nursing, pediatrics, general nursing, ethics, and materia medica. Students were furnished with uniforms and books, and were paid a small monthly sum.

In 1924 the School was reorganized and became the School of Nursing. At that time a five-year program leading to a bachelor s of science degree in Nursing was added, combining a two-year program of college courses with three years of nurses training. Education and training would prepare students not only for bedside nursing but also for service in the varied fields of Public Health Nursing and for supervision and teaching in hospitals and schools of nursing.

In the first years of the Training School for Nurses, the requirements for admission included an interview with the Superintendent to determine if the student had enough mature intelligence to carry out and obey orders. Candidates had to be between 20 and 35 years of age and of good physique. References from a responsible person, usually a minister, testifying to their good moral character and a physician s certificate of sound health and unimpaired faculties were also required. A high school diploma was preferred, but not required, until 1915. The following year admission standards were changed to parallel those of other schools of the University.

In September 1929 a program in Public Health Nursing for registered nurses was introduced, made possible by a financial gift from Mr. and Mrs. George Oliver Carpenter and the Rockefeller Foundation. The program was discontinued in June 1936.

The Depression caused a drop in the patient census of hospitals, and thus the number of both student and graduate nurses needed. In the early 1930s, many nursing schools, including Washington University, limited the number of applicants admitted and took steps to have the smaller training schools for nurses closed or consolidated, thereby increasing the necessity of employing graduate nurses. By the late 1930s, however, as the economy started to recover, there was a recognized scarcity of nurses and a renewed effort to enroll student nurses.

In 1941 the National League of Nursing Education listed the Washington University School of Nursing among its initial list of schools meeting its accreditation standards. During the Second World War, the shortage of nurses prompted the School to lower the age of admission to 17, and to admit three classes of students per year. During the 1930s an average of 38 nurses were graduated each year. In the 1940s the average rose to 62.

Cadet Nurse Corps, 1943 or 1944

In an effort to address the nursing shortage, the U.S. Public Health Service established the Cadet Nurse Corps in 1943. Students joining the Corps promised to continue in essential nursing service for the duration of the war. They could choose the kind of nursing: Army or Navy Corps, Government or civilian hospitals, or public health nursing. In return, the Government paid the students tuition and fees and an additional monthly stipend. The Washington University School of Nursing was the first school in St. Louis to participate in the program.

In 1951 a Master of Science Degree in Nursing was introduced. Candidates for the degree could specialize in the fields of teaching in clinical nursing, supervision in hospital nursing services, maternal and child nursing, psychiatric nursing, and medical-surgical nursing. In 1954 the School of Nursing was reorganized and placed directly under Washington University, thus becoming an autonomous school of the University. Prior to 1954, the School of Nursing had been under the supervision of the University s School of Medicine.

The Central Administration Committee of Washington University agreed to admit male students into the School of Nursing in November 1950. The first African-American to receive a degree from the Washington University School of Nursing was Mrs. Wanda Hall, who received a master s degree in 1953 after completing the Advanced Program in Psychiatric Nursing. Mrs. Hall then joined the faculty as an instructor in Psychiatric Nursing.

Similar to other university programs in the 1950s, Washington University discontinued its three-year diploma and five-year degree programs. Hospital schools of nursing were taking over the responsibility of training nurses in programs leading to a degree in nursing. (As an example, Barnes Hospital admitted its first class in its Diploma School of Nursing in September 1955.) Universities assumed responsibility for developing programs on the collegiate level. In 1957 the final classes of diploma and degree students of the Washington University School of Nursing graduated under the old plan. In 1958 the University developed plans establishing a four-year basic Baccalaureate Program. Funding was secured and the first class was admitted in September 1961.

All nursing programs were terminated in July 1969. Over its 64-year history, the Washington University School of Nursing graduated over 2,000 nurses.

With the closing of the Washington University School of Nursing, the only remaining baccalaureate program in nursing in St. Louis at that time was the St. Louis University School of Nursing, which had been established in 1928. Forensic Nursing Certificate

Forensic nursing combines the medical knowledge and patient care aspects of nursing, the laboratory experience of medical laboratory technicians and the investigative and evidence-gathering skills of crime-scene specialists. Forensic nurses work with the police, paramedics, coroners, social service agencies and emergency medical services.

Program Information and Requirements

One focus of forensic nursing training is on the treatment of victims of accidents, trauma and disasters. This includes helping the victims’ families, recognizing abuse and neglect, preserving forensic evidence and preparing for courtroom testimony. Other specialties within forensic nursing include nurse coroner, legal nurse consultant, correctional nursing specialist and sexual assault nurse examiner.

Distance education forensic nursing certificate programs average 12-15 credits, and these programs can be completed in 9-24 months. Classes are generally fully online, but some schools require occasional on-site attendance for classes or seminars. For courses with clinical components, schools help students arrange clinical practice at sites near their homes; such sites can include acute care settings, protective investigation units, sexual assault examination teams or crime scene units. Evidence Collection

The course covers evidence collection and preservation, the legal rules of crime scene processing and chain of custody law. Procedures common to police departments, social service agencies and courtrooms are also discussed.

Courtroom Testimony

Students learn the various types of courtroom experiences for forensic nurses, including legal consultation, deposition and testimony. Some programs have students participate in a mock-trial courtroom experience, which may be held onsite, rather than online.

Forensic Photography in Health Care

The use of photographs to bolster physical evidence is discussed, along with cameras, lenses and lighting. Included in the course are forensic procedures and techniques, like the inclusion of scale objects, establishing context with distant set-up shots, and maintenance of photographs’ chain of custody.

Emergency and Trauma

The medical objective to provide appropriate medical care to a victim must be balanced with the forensic objective of preserving evidence. Techniques to accomplish both with the least compromise are discussed. Also discussed are triage and care during disasters.

Interpersonal Violence

Interpersonal violence includes sexual assault and battery, abuse and neglect, human trafficking, spousal abuse and religious abuse. Other topics include the forensic processing of bite marks, blunt trauma, sharp injuries and gun wounds.

Career Information

Forensic nurses require an active RN license to practice. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not track separate data for forensic nurses, but states a projected job growth for all RNs to be 16% from 2014-2024 (www.bls.gov ). The median annual salary for RNs in 2015 was $67,490.

Most forensic nurses work for acute care medical facilities, law enforcement, legal services, social services, coroners and in nursing schools. Some are self-employed as independent consultants and expert witnesses.

Certification Information

The International Association of Forensic Nurses (www.iafn.org ) offers exam-based certification credentials as Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners, either for adults and adolescents (SANE-A) or for pediatric and adolescent populations (SANE-P). Other certification agencies for forensic nurses include the Correctional Health Professional from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care and the Legal Nurse Consultant from the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants.

RNs interested in applying their trade to help solve crimes will want to pursue an undergraduate or graduate certificate in forensic nursing. Online courses offered in these programs teach RNs about evidence collection, court testimonies, trauma care and other topics related to medicine and forensics.

Who is it for?

The course has been designed for qualified NMC registered nurses to enable them to top up their existing qualifications to degree level and further develop their knowledge and skills in their profession.

Requirements and how to apply

You must be a qualified nurse in the UK, although your qualification can be from overseas.

  • For specialist routes you must be working within an appropriate specialist healthcare setting

In addition to the listed entry requirements, if your first language is not English you will also need IELTS: 7.0 with at least 6:5 in all components.

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study.

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course. There are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than six months
  • Students on courses of less than six months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English language course.

Teaching and learning

A blended approach to learning and teaching is adopted including taught modules; e-learning and work-based learning.

Assessments are varied to meet the practice and academic challenges of the BSc degree level programme, while recognising the need for motivating, realistic and relevant activity. Assessment includes essays; objective structured clinical examinations; practice-based assessments and seminar presentations with supporting papers. The dissertation can be either a literature review, portfolio review or a work-based project. Once you start to prepare for your research project you will also have a research supervisor, skilled in your particular discipline.

When you have successfully completed the taught modules and the dissertation, you will qualify for a BSc degree with honours. Complete just the taught modules and you will achieve a BSc ordinary degree.

    Top 3 MSN Nursing Programs In San Diego + Requirements

    Arnold Schwarzenegger implemented the California Nurse Education Initiative in 2005, when he was governor of California. His goal was to address the shortage of nursing in the state. Thanks to this program, BSN and MSN programs are able to receive funding so that residents of the state will find the nursing career more attractive. Additionally, the program has various scholarships available for those nurses who want to improve their skills and knowledge. It seems that the initiative has been highly successful, with a doubling in MSN enrollment between 2004 and 2008.

    However, the biggest nursing shortage is found in nurse educators. So long as this is not addressed, students will continue to be turned away from schools because there simply isn t sufficient faculty members to teach them. Additionally, there continues to be a significant lack of advanced practice nurses, who are responsible for a great deal of primary health care delivery across the state.

    Advanced practice nurses must hold a master s degree (MSN) in order to work in California. The Center for Health Professions has stated that more and more nurse practitioners, as well as other advanced practice nurses, are becoming increasingly involved in the delivery of primary care, often taking over the role of a physician. At the same time, the state continues to experience a surge in demand for these types of nurses. As a result, choosing to study towards an MSN is a great idea, as it almost guarantees you are able to find employment in San Diego or the rest of the state. As someone with an MSN. you will be a true specialist in a specific field and you will be seen as a leader in the health care and nursing profession.

    It is very important that you are properly prepared if you want to complete your MSN. This means that you should take a look at the different programs that are on offer in order to identify the one that best suits your personal needs and requirements.     Dry Harbor Rehab s programs operate seven days a week, bringing the most experienced licensed therapists in Queens to the task. The atmosphere in the rehab pavilion is upbeat and fun: patient outcomes improve dramatically when they are involved and enjoying their personal road to recovery.

    As good as it is, rehabilitation centers, and especially rehab equipment, must be maintained at the highest level in order to perform properly.     My experience with the physical therapy department was a rejuvenating one. If I asked for heat on my back they let me relax and enjoy the warmth and soothing feel of the heat but they would still make sure that I did what was necessary to get me going again.

    For adult and senior patients that require rehabilitation from illness or injury before they return home, there isn’t a more effective, modern, and upbeat rehabilitation center than Dry Harbor. Each resident in our program is helped to achieve full recovery as soon as possible with warm, positive reinforcement for success. Dry Harbor Rehab’s “restorative model of rehabilitation” provides aggressive physical, occupational and speech therapies seven days of week. Therapy is tailored to each individual’s specific diagnosis and needs, using modern equipment in a pleasant, calming atmosphere. Evidence shows that rehab patients do best when they work with the same therapists over the course of their recovery. Whenever possible, we make sure they have continuity of therapist, so that the therapist knows exactly where the patient is holding in their recovery. It also boosts the patient’s energy to see a familiar face when they start their therapy session. Our therapy team includes orthopedists, physiatrists, nurses, social workers, discharge planners, case managers and dietitians — one of the largest and most accomplished teams in the borough. They work together to ensure a smooth and well-coordinated healing process. Residents are closely monitored to prevent injury and set-backs, and to ensure their unique goals are reached. Only then are they scheduled for discharge from the rehabilitation center, strong and confident in their accomplishments.

    We have found that patients that come to us for short-term rehabilitation do best when they are amongst others with similar goals. That is why we’ve built our Short Term Rehab Pavilion on the lower floors of our complex — a cheerful, spotless, and modern facility specifically designed with the needs of the short term resident in mind. Our short term residents enjoy their own well-equipped gym, dining room and recreation facilities. Specially trained staff provide excellent clinical care, working with residents and their families to make goals and prepare patients for the rapid return to their homes. The Short Term Rehab Pavilion has become one of the most sought after facilities in the Queens community, and in the entire metropolitan area.

    Aqua massage therapy, also known as hydro massage, uses water pressure to apply massage to the body. Water massage helps to relax muscles, increase blood circulation, and relieve muscular pain and tension. It provides all the benefits of whirlpool therapy, but is much easier for many of our patients and residents to use. Dry Harbor Rehabilitation Center maintains two of the industry’s most sophisticated dry hydrotherapy devices in the world. Our well-trained staff has found that in addition to all the muscle and tissue conditions that are helped by water massage, the treatments help eliminate stress. Treatments are given in a relaxed, spa-like setting.

    When rehabilitation clients are ready to return home — well over 90% of our rehab patients will do so — we prepare a comprehensive discharge plan that assures a smooth transition back to their regular routine. This plan is developed by the same multi-disciplinary team that has monitored the patient from the day of their admission to Dry Harbor Rehabilitation Center. It takes into consideration the unique needs of the patient, and the specific challenges of the home environment they are returning to. The plan may include a transition to home care, visiting nurses, a program of exercise, and/or schedule for follow ups with doctors and therapists. We are affiliated with a number of home care providers and work to arrange the right level of service each patient requires. And we speak with patients to make sure that the services they need are being adequately and properly delivered. After our patients leave our facility, we check up on them to make sure they have received their medications and equipment, that they have proper follow-up with their physicians, and that they are receiving visiting home health care services when called for. It’s no wonder that we see so many “repeat” clients: knee or hip replacement patients that have another joint done and spouses of patients that we have treated. When our patients leave Dry Harbor Rehab, they become our best advertisements.

Students who are required to complete clinical placements as part of their course must therefore be immunised in accordance with the relevant State or Territory immunisation standards (e.g. Health Immunisation for Health Care Workers in South Australia 2014 Policy Guideline) and any additional private provider requirements as needed.

    Admission to the Nursing Programs at MSU Denver is a two-part application process. First, the student must be admitted to Metropolitan State University of Denver. Second, the student must apply and be admitted to one of the Nursing Programs at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

    The BSN program provides students the knowledge, skills, and abilities to function effectively in all areas of nursing practice through quality instruction and clinical experiences. The program provides students the opportunity to apply didactic knowledge in a variety of hands-on and simulated clinical settings, and lays the groundwork for continuing one’s professional education at the graduate level.

    Upon successful completion of the BSN program, graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX) offered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

    Course of Study

    The BSN program is an upper-division offering that requires Pre-nursing majors to complete the core curriculum courses prior to matriculation into the BSN Major. Each August, new junior students enter the 4 semester course of program study.

    Instruction progresses from simple to complex, and the curriculum is sequentially organized using core and process concepts. The core concepts that are central to content development are the person, environment, health, and nursing. Interwoven with the core concepts are those process concepts that nursing uses to maintain and improve the health of persons in their environment.

    Connecting the core and process concepts is the overarching desired outcome of quality health care that should be safe, effective, patient/client-centered, timely, efficient, equitable, and evidence-based.

    The first two semesters of the Practical Nursing (PN) and Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) programs are identical and provide a core of knowledge and skills that are common to both nursing roles. Kirkwood nursing classes cover medical, surgical, geriatric, maternal-child, mental health and home health nursing over the five-semester program. Patient care skills are learned in a supervised lab setting. Clinical experience begins in the first semester. Students receive clinical experience in all of the major areas of nursing and complete their clinics in area hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, mental health facilities, home health agencies and a variety of specialty clinics.

    CERTIFIED NURSE AIDE
    All students are required to complete Certified Nurse Aid training and successfully pass the written and skills examination before beginning the technical and clinical portion of the program.     About the AE-MSN

    The Alternate Entry Master of Science in Nursing (AE-MSN) program is designed for people holding baccalaureate or graduate degrees in disciplines other than nursing and who are interested in pursuing both their Registered Nurse (RN) License and Master of Science in Nursing degree. After successfully completing the rigorous academic and clinical training, AE-MSN graduates are expected to assume entry-level positions and to advance rapidly in their nursing careers as they acquire experience in the field. AE-MSN students can choose from one of the following concentration areas on which to focus (click on the link for a program description and degree plan):

    Course of Study

    • The Foundation Year. The AE program is designed to satisfy RN licensure requirements and train students in advanced practice and specialty nursing roles. The first year of the program is an intensive, full-time series of foundation courses. The AE-MSN Foundation Year (Pre-Licensure) Courses (PDF) are accelerated, specially designed graduate courses. These courses include content and experiences that are required to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and are required for graduate-level study in nursing. All foundation courses must be completed before students are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN licensure exam. The sequence of AE-MSN foundation courses begins in the first summer session of the program, and full-time enrollment during the foundation sequence is required.
    • Master s Coursework. After passing the NCLEX-RN and obtaining their RN license, students are eligible to work as an RN in Texas only. The second and third years of the program focus on the coursework required for the Master of Science in Nursing degree in the student’s chosen concentration area. The MSN degree is typically awarded in the spring of the third year.

    Admission Requirements for the AE-MSN Program

    All students interested in applying for graduate study in Nursing at the University of Texas at Austin must meet the admission requirements established by the University s Office of Graduate Studies and the School of Nursing. Applicants are expected to be graduates of accredited colleges or universities. Below are the minimum requirements for admission.

    1. Bachelor s degree in an area other than Nursing
    2. A GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or comparable GPA in upper-division work (junior- and senior-level courses) and in any graduate work previously completed
    3. Completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) within the past five years (School code: 6882). No exceptions apply.
    4. Completion of all AE-MSN Prerequisite Courses (PDF) at the time of summer enrollment (not the time of application)

    Acceptance to Graduate Programs in Nursing

    The School of Nursing Graduate Admissions and Progression Committee (GAPC) may begin preliminary admission reviews as soon as an applicant s file is complete; however, admission decisions are not made until after the program s application deadline. All application materials are required to be submitted by the program’s application deadline; files that remain incomplete will not be reviewed or acted upon by GAPC.

    If admitted, applicants will be notified of the admission decision by early March and will receive two separate notices: (1) an unofficial e-letter from the School of Nursing informing you of the Committee s decision, and (2) an official e-letter from the Graduate and International Admission Center notifying you of the admission decision of the Office of Graduate Studies. Acceptance by both the School of Nursing and the Office of Graduate Studies is necessary before enrollment is permitted. Many people would like to take advantage of this opportunity but can’t devote themselves full-time to study. Many accredited institutions offer part-time programs so interested students can go to school while focusing on work and other priorities.

    Registered Nurse

    You can take two paths to becoming an RN. You can complete an associate degree in nursing and become an ADN. You can also complete a bachelor’s degree in nursing an become a BSN. Becoming an RN of any level requires completion of a full academic curriculum and passing a licensing exam. Most accredited colleges and universities offer RN programs. Many will allow you to attend part-time, but this can get lengthy. The standard amount of time for a full-time student to receive her BSN is four years. If you attend half-time, it can stretch to eight years. The associate degree program will require between 60 and 90 credit hours; the bachelor’s degree, approximately 120 credit hours. Deciding which avenue to pursue will depend on your personal obligations. Both offer the same entry-level opportunities, but the BSN might open the door to promotions and more responsibilities.

    Licensed Vocational Nurse

    Completing an LVN course takes approximately 12 months on a full-time basis. Half-time attendance will obviously double this time. Most community colleges and technical schools offer the LVN curriculum. However, some do not offer this curriculum on a part-time basis. The total credit hours needed to complete the course is approximately 48. Before considering the LVN course, research schools to make sure they offer this curriculum part-time.

    CNA

    Becoming a certified nursing assistant offers you a quick solution to employment. Most CNA courses are short. They can be completed in approximately six weeks to six months. The approximate hours to completion on a full-time basis is between 100 and 165 clock hours, depending on the institution. Many technical schools offer part-time programs and classes as needed. In addition, each state offers approved curriculum in a variety of places, from nursing homes to high schools. Many students choose a full-time program to become a CNA, then enroll in an RN or LVN program part-time.

    RN To BSN Programs

    Many schools offer tailored, part-time RN to BSN curriculum devoted to ADNs who wish to pursue the BSN. The length of time to complete the course varies, but can take as long as 18 to 24 months. The curriculum offer advanced studies complementary to what you have already learned. One of the best things about this course is that it’s developed with the understanding that students work. This allows great flexibility in your studies.

    Considerations

    Attending nursing school part-time will take tremendous discipline. Part-time curriculum combine traditional classes with online studies and distance learning. The time to complete school will depend on the hours you can reasonably apply toward a program. Many nursing students stay in school for years. But the commitment pays off. The nursing profession allows a plethora of avenues for advancement. Some nurses continue working full-time as they pursue master’s or doctoral degrees. This is a huge investment of time and money.     The Casic Concept of Pain

    1. Definition of Pain


    Pain is a subjective sensory and emotional experience unpleasant tissue damage associated with actual or potential or perceived in the events where the damage occurred.

    Another definition of pain is a subjective experience, greatly influenced by private educational, cultural, and cognitive meaning of the situation.

    2. Type of pain based on the duration and length

    Pain is usually divided into two major types are acute and chronic pain. Both can be distinguished from the onset, duration and cause pain.

    Acute pain occurs after an acute injury, illness or surgical intervention and has a rapid onset, with varying intensity (mild to severe) and lasts for a short time (Meinhart and Mc Caffery, 1983, NIH 1986 in Potter and Perry, 1997).

    By Bonica in 1987, acute pain as a collection of unpleasant experiences associated with sensory, perceptual and emotional responses related to the autonomic, emotional and behavioral.

    Acute pain is usually a new event, a sudden and short duration. It is associated with acute illness, surgery or medical procedures or trauma and pain can help to determine its location. Another characteristic is the sense of pain can usually be identified, the pain was quickly reduced / lost, are clear and likely to end up / missing.

    Chronic pain is pain that lasts a long, varied in intensity and usually lasts more than six months (Mc Caffery, 1986 in Potter and Perry, 1997). On clients with chronic pain often experience periods of remission (partial or complete loss of symptoms) and exacerbation (increased severity). The nature of this chronic pain can not be predicted which makes the client often leads to frustration and psychological depression.

    Chronic pain is a situation or circumstance that experience persistent pain / continuously for several months / years after the healing phase of an acute illness / injury. Characteristics of chronic pain is not easily identifiable area of pain, reduced pain intensity difficult, the pain usually increases, its nature is less obvious and less likely to heal / disappear.

    Chronic pain can be categorized into two: chronic pain of malignant and non malignant. Malignant chronic pain can be described as pain associated with cancer or other progressive diseases. Non-malignant chronic pain is usually associated with pain due to non-progressive tissue damage, or have experienced healing.

    3.Type of painbased on the intensity

    The intensity of pain a person can be known from the assessment tools used. In the verbal descriptions of pain, the individual is the best assessor of the pain they experienced and should therefore be asked to describe and make level. Obtained pain intensity was measured using a scale of them; simple descriptive pain intensity scale, a scale of 0-10 numerical pain intensity and visual analogue scale (VAS). Scale used to describe the intensity / severity of pain.

    a. Simple descriptive pain intensity scale
    Pain intensity scale of this simple descriptive pain using six images of different facial expressions, showing a happy face to sad face, which is used to express pain. This scale can be used from children age 3 (three) years.

    b. Numeric pain intensity scale: 0 -10
    Severity of pain or pain made into measurable with subjective pain make objective opinion. Numerical scale, was used from 0 to 10, zero (0) is a state with no or a pain-free, while ten (10), a very great pain.

    c. Visual analog scale (VAS)
    Similar scale is a straight line, without figures. Be free to express pain, to the left to no pain, unbearable pain in the right direction, with the center about which pain is. Clients asked to indicate the position of pain on the line between these two extreme values.

    Pain Definition – Nanda

    Feeling and an unpleasant emotional experience arising from tissue damage or a description of actual and potential damage. It can occur suddenly or slowly, the intensity of light or heavy. With predictions of healing time is approximately less than 6 months.

    • Reports of verbal and nonverbal

    • Position the patient to be careful to avoid the pain

    To be eligible for reimbursement, courses must be approved in advance by the employee’s manager. Eligible employees will be reimbursed only for courses which are directly related to the employee’s current position or which will enhance the employee’s potential for transfer or advancement to a position within the organization.

    Eligibility
    Full-time (0.8 and above FTE) and part-time (0.5 FTE – 0.7 FTE) employees are eligible to participate if conditions are met. (Refer to Tuition Reimbursement Policy 300.007).

    Maximum Annual Benefit

    Full-time .8 FTE
    $3,000 per calendar year

    Part-time .5 FTE
    $1,500 per calendar year

    CHI Health’s Loan Forgiveness Program is intended to help recent graduates in hard-to-recruit jobs by providing assistance with repayment of student loans.

    Eligible employees must be employed by CHI Health. Employees must have received a degree required for the eligible job within the five years preceding their hire date. A list of jobs currently eligible is shown below. Employees must be working in jobs with a 0.8 or greater FTE (i.e. they work, on average, at least 4 days per week).

    Employees must submit current documentation of their outstanding loan balance, along with an Application for the Loan Forgiveness Program, to HR. Loans must be from an agency or corporation engaged in the business of student loans, and the employee must be personally responsible for repayment.

    Payments will be made for up to five years, or until the loan is fully paid, whichever occurs first. To remain eligible, employees must remain in the eligible job and FTE status.

    SCHEDULED RESOURCE TEAM

    Professionals – Registered Nurses (RN) Commitment – Work 24 or 36 hours a week. All 12-hour shifts. Availability – Float group determined by campus; minimum of three departments required Schedule – 12-hour shifts, every third weekend, 50 percent of holidays

    Compensation

    • Base rate, differentials and increases (same as for core staff ).
  • Premium Differential – 10 percent for day shift, 15 percent for night shift. Full orientation in each department will be completed prior to receiving premium differential.
  • Eligible for a full range of employment benefits, including medical, dental and PTO.
  • PREMIUM PLUS POOL

    Professionals – RN, Nursing Assistant, Behavioral Health RN, Behavioral Health Tech. Commitment – 24-48 hours every two pay periods, depending on Tier options. Availability – Must be able to float to all inpatient units – Medical/Surgical, Step Down and Critical Care and/or Behavioral departments, depending on campus and system needs.

    Compensation

    • Base rate of pay, differentials and increases (same as for core staff )
  • RN Premium – $10 per hour for 24-hour commitment; $15 per hour for 48-hour commitment. The premium is on every direct patient care hour worked (up to 40 per week; no premium, if overtime).
  • CNA/Behavioral Tech Premium – $3 per hour for every direct patient care hour worked (up to 40 per week; no premium if overtime).
  • Program commitments will be reviewed quarterly.
  • Eligible to self-purchase benefits — including medical and dental.
