Nursing Student Loans (NSL)

Nursing Student Loans is a program that makes funds available to eligible accredited U.S. schools of nursing, which match at least one ninth of the funding, and use the funds to establish revolving funds that support long-term, low-interest loans for eligible students with financial need.

Schools are responsible for selecting loan recipients, making reasonable determinations of need, and providing loans that do not exceed the cost of attendance including tuition and reasonable educational and living expenses.

Eligible Schools

Accredited schools of nursing located in the U.S. and its territories that train students in any of the following nursing degree programs are eligible to participate in the Nursing Student Loans program:

  • Diploma
  • Associate
  • Baccalaureate
  • Graduate

Participating schools enter into a written agreement with the Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which requires them to adhere to a number of requirements.

Schools can make loans only to students who are U.S. citizens, nationals or lawful permanent residents (those with student or visitor visas are not eligible), are enrolled or accepted for enrollment as part time or full time students in the school and are in need of financial assistance.

Nursing Student Loans

Apply at a participating school of nursing . Check with your financial aid office to see if your school participates in the Nursing Student Loan program.

The Nursing Student Loan program provides long-term, low-interest rate loans to full-time and half-time financially needy students pursuing a course of study leading to a diploma, associate, baccalaureate or graduate degree in nursing.

Participating schools are responsible for selecting loan recipients and for determining the amount of assistance a student requires.

Eligible Applicants

You are eligible to apply for this loan at a school that participates in the Nursing Student Loan program if you are

  • A citizen, national, or a lawful permanent resident of the United States or the District of Columbia, the Commonwealths of Puerto Rico or the Marianas Islands, the Virgin Islands, Guam, the American Samoa, the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and and the Federated State of Micronesia.
  • Able to demonstrate financial need and provide financial information about your parents.
