Congratulations to Julio Guitierrez UCF’s first ever hackathon sanctioned by Major League Hacking (MLH). A hackathon is an event where you have 24 (or more) contiguous hours to develop a mobile app, a game, some awesome hardware, or anything that makes your ideas come to life. Julio, with four other students, made a game for the Oculus Rift where you throw a javelin using the Myo armband. They won “Best Use of VR.”

Julio also recently landed a summer internship at Microsoft and will work for the Universal Windows Store group. Congratulations, Julio!

Lucas Pasqualin 1 of 3 Selected to Study Abroad at the Children’s Media Department of FIDMT in Erfurt, Germany

Congratulations to Lucas Pasqualin, a student working in Prodigy at IST, who has been selected as 1 of 3 undergraduate students from UCF to study abroad this summer at the Children’s Media Department of FIDMT in Erfurt, Germany. This is a result of an NSF funded project. He will have a mentor who will seek to grow his professional skills in an international research setting.

The research is primarily focused on Digital Storytelling, with an emphasis on Children’s Games and Dynamic Storytelling. The researchers would like to design a system that a child can interact with, and ask questions such as “Can you tell me a different story?”, or “What would happen if. ” The research encompasses such topics as formal methods for generating and storing new story lines, the effect of digital avatars on listener engagement, and other related technologies.

There are three popular approaches to server virtualization: the virtual machine model, the paravirtual machine model, and virtualization at the operating system (OS) layer.

Virtual machines are based on the host/guest paradigm. Each guest runs on a virtual imitation of the hardware layer. This approach allows the guest operating system to run without modifications. It also allows the administrator to create guests that use different operating systems. The guest has no knowledge of the host’s operating system because it is not aware that it’s not running on real hardware. It does, however, require real computing resources from the host — so it uses a hypervisor to coordinate instructions to the CPU. The hypervisor is called a virtual machine monitor (VMM). It validates all the guest-issued CPU instructions and manages any executed code that requires addition privileges. VMware and Microsoft Virtual Server both use the virtual machine model.

The paravirtual machine (PVM) model is also based on the host/guest paradigm — and it uses a virtual machine monitor too. In the paravirtual machine model, however, The VMM actually modifies the guest operating system’s code. This modification is called porting. Porting supports the VMM so it can utilize privileged systems calls sparingly. Like virtual machines, paravirtual machines are capable of running multiple operating systems. Xen and UML both use the paravirtual machine model.

Virtualization at the OS level works a little differently. It isn’t based on the host/guest paradigm. In the OS level model, the host runs a single OS kernel as its core and exports operating system functionality to each of the guests. Guests must use the same operating system as the host, although different distributions of the same system are allowed. This distributed architecture eliminates system calls between layers, which reduces CPU usage overhead. It also requires that each partition remain strictly isolated from its neighbors so that a failure or security breach in one partition isn’t able to affect any of the other partitions. In this model, common binaries and libraries on the same physical machine can be shared, allowing an OS level virtual server to host thousands of guests at the same time. Virtuozzo and Solaris Zones both use OS-level virtualization.

Server virtualization can be viewed as part of an overall virtualization trend in enterprise IT that includes storage virtualization, network virtualization, and workload management. This trend is one component in the development of autonomic computing, in which the server environment will be able to manage itself based on perceived activity. Server virtualization can be used to eliminate server sprawl, to make more efficient use of server resources, to improve server availability, to assist in disaster recovery, testing and development, and to centralize server administration.

La messagerie est le logiciel de votre ordinateur qui peut prendre potentiellement le plus de place. En effet, le haut débit aidant, nous recevons chaque jour davantage de mails dont les tailles sont parfois très importantes.

Pour conserver des performances optimales. votre messagerie a besoin d’être nettoyée de temps en temps. Dans ce but, Microsoft Outlook propose une fonction d’archivage. Dans cet article, nous allons observer comment archiver ses anciens messages dans Microsoft Outlook .

Note. L’archivage qui est décrit dans cet article concerne le client de messagerie Outlook et non le client de messagerie Outlook Express. Les captures d’écran ont été réalisées à partir de Microsoft Outlook 2002.

Microsoft Outlook propose d’archiver automatiquement vos anciens messages. Pour activer cette fonction, rendez-vous dans le menu Outils et cliquez sur Options. Dans l’onglet Autre. cliquez sur Autoarchivage .

Description des options proposées :

  • Autoarchiver tous les 14 jours. Déplace vos éléments dans un dossier d’archivage au bout du nombre de jour spécifié.
  • Demander avant l’exécution de l’autoarchivage. Outlook demandera une confirmation de votre part avant de lancer l’archivage.

Pendant l’autoarchivage :

  • Supprimer les éléments arrivés à terme (dossier de messagerie seulement). Supprime les messages dont la date d’expiration est dépassée.
  • Archiver ou supprimer les anciens éléments. Permet d’activer les options d’archivage des messages :
    • Afficher le dossier d’archivage dans la liste des dossiers. Permet d’afficher le dossier d’archivage dans la liste des dossiers Outlook.
    • Paramètres par défaut des dossiers pour l’archivage :
      • Effacer les éléments plus anciens que 6 mois. Outlook va archiver les éléments qui ont été créé depuis plus longtemps que la durée spécifiée.
      • Déplacer les anciens éléments vers. Outlook va enregistrer les éléments archivés de le fichier .pst que vous indiquez.
      • Supprimer définitivement les anciens éléments. Supprime tous les éléments qui ont été créés depuis plus longtemps que la durée spécifiée (Non recommandé)

Appliquer ces paramètres à tous les dossiers maintenant. Permet d’appliquer ces paramètres à tous les dossiers de votre messagerie.

Paramétrage recommandé :

  • Archivage tous les 7 ou 14 jours
  • Cochez Demander confirmation avant d’exécuter l’archivage
  • Choisissez de déplacer les éléments à archiver et non de les supprimer

Archivage personnalisé.
Il est possible de définir des règles d’archivages personnalisées en fonction de vos dossiers.
Dans la liste de dossiers, faites un clic droit sur le dossier dont vous voulez définir les paramètres d’archivage et cliquez sur Propriétés .

Ouvrez l’onglet Autoarchivage .

Sélectionnez les paramètres d’archivages désirés :

  • Ne pas archiver les éléments dans ce dossier. Outlook n’archivera pas les éléments inclus dans ce dossier.
  • Archiver les éléments dans ce dossier à l’aide des paramètres par défaut. Cliquez sur Paramètres d’archivage par défaut pour définir ces paramètres par défaut.
  • Archiver ce dossier à l’aide des paramètres suivants. Permet de définir des paramètres d’archivages personnalisés. Outlook utilisera ces paramètres à la place de ceux définis par défaut.
    • Effacer les éléments plus ancien que. Déplace dans le dossier d’archives les éléments qui ont été créé depuis plus longtemps que la durée spécifiée.
    • Déplacer les anciens éléments dans le dossier d’archivage par défaut.
    • Déplacer les anciens éléments vers. Fichier .pst dans lequel vous voulez qu’Outlook archive les éléments qui ont été créé depuis plus longtemps que la durée spécifiée.
    • Supprimer définitivement les anciens éléments. Supprime tous les éléments qui ont été créé depuis plus longtemps que la durée spécifiée (Non recommandé)

Conseil. Si vous avez une messagerie très volumineuse, il est conseillé de faire le tri de vos messages dans des sous-dossiers et de configurer un archivage personnalisé sur ces sous-dossiers. Ainsi, vous pourrez trier manuellement les éléments que vous ne désirez pas archiver avant de lancer la procédure d’archivage. De plus, il est également conseillé de créer plusieurs fichiers .pst lorsque vous désirez archiver une messagerie volumineuse. Vous pourriez par exemple créer un fichier .pst par année d’archive.

Connexion ou déconnexion d’un fichier d’archive.

Les éléments archivés sont stockés dans un fichier .pst du même type que celui qui stocke les éléments de votre messagerie (boîte de réception, boîte d’envoi, calendrier. ).Il est possible de déconnecter ces fichiers d’archives lorsque l’on n’a pas besoin de les consulter. Il suffit de sélectionner le dossier d’archives dans la liste des dossiers et de le déconnecter en faisant un clic droit dessus (Pour fermer le dossier nommé Dossiers d’archivage, il suffit de cliquer sur Fermer Dossiers d’archivage ).

Pour connecter à votre messagerie un fichier .pst déjà existant :

Dans la barre de menu, cliquez sur Fichier puis sur Ouvrir. Sélectionnez Fichier de données Outlook .

Sélectionnez le fichier .pst à ouvrir.

Créer un nouveau fichier .pst.

Pour pouvoir stocker vos archives dans plusieurs fichiers .pst, il faut créer ces nouveaux fichiers au préalable. Dans la barre de menu, ouvrez le menu Fichier et cliquez sur Gestion de fichiers de données .

Cliquez sur Ajouter pour créer un nouveau fichier .pst.

Sélectionnez le type de fichier de données à créer. Fichier de dossiers personnels (.pst)

Nommez le fichier que vous désirez créer.

Définissez les paramètres de cryptage du fichier et le mot de passe de protection.

Outlook propose trois niveaux de cryptage des dossiers personnels. Le cryptage permet de rendre impossible la lecture du fichier depuis un autre programme.

Options de cryptage disponibles :

  • Aucun cryptage. Le fichier ne sera pas crypté. Il sera possible de lire le fichier de dossiers personnels (.pst) à l’aide d’un éditeur de texte ou d’un éditeur hexadécimal.
  • Cryptage compressible. Le fichier sera crypté et pourra être compressé si un programme de compression de disque est installé sur la machine. Avec ce paramètre, il est impossible de lire le fichier de dossiers personnels (.pst) à l’aide d’un éditeur de texte ou d’un éditeur hexadécimal (recommandé).
  • Meilleur cryptage possible. Le fichier sera crypté dans un format qui offre un plus haut niveau de protection. Le fichier peut être compressé avec un utilitaire de compression de disque mais la compression sera moins efficace qu’avec l’option Cryptage compressible.

Le fichier .pst peut être protégé par mot de passe (15 caractères maximum). Si vous cochez la case Enregistrer ce mot de passe dans votre liste de mots de passe. pensez tout de même à le noter quelque part. Ce mot de passe sera demandé si vous voulez ouvrir le fichier .pst sur un autre ordinateur.

Lancer manuellement la procédure d’archivage.

Outlook va lancer automatiquement et de façon périodique l’archivage de votre messagerie. Il est tout de même possible de lancer la procédure d’archivage manuellement en cas de besoin.

Dans la barre de menu, cliquez sur Fichier puis sur Archiver .

Cochez Archiver tous les dossiers en fonction de leurs paramètres d’autoarchivage. Outlook utilisera soit les paramètres par défaut, soit les paramètres que vous avez spécifiés pour chaque dossier.

Compression du fichier .pst.

Le fait de supprimer des messages dans votre messagerie ne fait pas diminuer la taille des fichiers .pst. Pour réduire la taille de ces fichiers, il faut lancer une compression du fichier.
Avant de compresser vos fichiers .pst, il est nécessaire d’archiver les anciens éléments (cf. procédure ci-dessus) ou de supprimer les messages que vous ne désirez pas conserver.

Dans la barre de menu, ouvrez le menu Fichier et cliquez sur Gestion de fichiers de données .

Sélectionnez le fichier .pst dont vous voulez réduire la taille et cliquez sur Paramètres .

Cliquez sur Compresser. Le processus de compression peut prendre beaucoup de temps, surtout si vous avez une messagerie de taille importante.

Outlook affiche un écran de rappel pendant la procédure de compression du fichier .pst.

Conseils.

  • Evitez les fichiers .pst trop volumineux. Cela diminue fortement les performances de votre messagerie et provoque des instabilités de cette dernière lorsque la taille du fichier .pst est trop importante (veillez à ce que le fichier ne dépasse pas 2 Go, même s’il est fortement conseillé d’archiver ses messages avant d’arriver à une telle taille. Considérez plutôt cette taille comme une valeur critique).
  • Créez des sous-dossiers pour trier vos messages.
  • Archivez vos messages régulièrement (toutes les semaines ou tous les 14 jours).
  • Lancez une compression de vos fichiers .pst une fois que l’archivage a été réalisé.

How to use Windows Performance Monitor to see the amounts of IOPS. the average disk latency. the average IO size and the throughput of the disk subsystem.

Please see this post for a detailed description of what these terms mean. We will need to have that information before having any use of Performance Monitor.

We will use this classic tool, which has been available in all versions of Windows since a very long time.

Once started, begin with removing any counters already present. Different versions of Perfmon has different pre-loaded counters and to make to output more clear please select them all and press the DEL key. Read also this post for more information on tweaking Performance Monitor be more useful.

Now press the + sign above the graphs and select Performance Objects . (This is the view on Windows Server 2008 R2, different versions of Microsoft operating systems has slightly different interfaces here). Among all of these objects you should find Physical Disk , select that and a list of available counters should appear below.

Important. Begin with selecting the correct instance. This is just the physical disk that you want monitor, see picture above. By default it will select _Total, which will be the sum of all physical disks you have available and the data will be more or less useless. If not changing this from the start we have to redo the adding of the counters. Always begin by selecting the instance you want to monitor, in the example above the Disk 1 (containing the D: partition).

This GUI also looks somewhat different between Windows Server 2003 and 2008 R2.

Now select the four counters below and we will then look what they represents.

Avg. Disk Bytes / Transfer
Avg. Disk sec / Transfer
Disk Bytes / sec
Disk Transfers / sec

Remember to click Add when selecting each one, it is easy to forget. Now if you like you can do some changes on the Perfmon window. If you would like to just observe the current values only, go to the graph tab and change view from Line to Report.

This will give a very clear view similar to this below, where you can observe the actual values only. (a bit like RESXTOP if having worked with the tool in Vmware).

If you would like to see both actual, minimum, maximum and average it is best to leave default graph style to Line.

So, how do these numbers shown here relate to more commonly used storage terms?

Some notes regarding these values:

Latency is normally expressed in milliseconds (ms), but Perfmon does display the value in seconds, for example 0.015 seconds = 15 ms .

Throughput is often expressed in MB/sec. but Perfmon in Windows 2003 displays this in Bytes/second. e.g. 382,090,819 meaning 382 MB/s. It would be nice to have to possibility to customize the output of this in Perfmon, but unfortunately that is not an option.

We can observe the current value of the selected counter, here Disk Bytes/sec, i.e. throughput and also the average as well as Min/Max. To change the observation time see this .

If we want the see differences between read and write request then all four of these values are available in separated Read/Write settings. This means that for example see the differences in latency between read and write request you could select Avg. Disk sec/Read and Avg. Disk sec/Write instead of Avg. Disk sec/Transfer (which gives the total).

Great article. My laptop disk is SATA 5400 rpm, so its max IOPS is 90. But when I use PerfMon to monitor IOPS (Disk Transfers / sec), this number can reach 200. I don t understand why IOPS can exceed its max IOPS.
Please help to explain for me.

The fact that you see higher than expected IOPS from a simple SATA disk comes from the actual access patern. The IOPS expected from a certain disk is often a worst case number coming from pure random access that forces the disk arm to move very often.

However, if your application is doing sequential reads or writes then the IO per seconds could be greatly higher. Even a SATA disk could have very high number in this case.
