Online Ministry Schools

Explore some of the degree programs you could pursue through an online ministry school, including the full range of programs from associate’s degrees through Doctor of Ministry programs. Learn about the unique characteristics of ministry schools, and get info on finding an accredited online school. Schools offering Christian Ministry degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Online ministry students will have the opportunity to study subjects like world religions, church history, and leadership. Programs are offered at the undergraduate or graduate level.

What Are Some Examples of Online Undergraduate Degrees in Ministry?

At some schools, you’ll be able to earn an Associate of Science (A.S.) in Christian Ministries. Usually conducted entirely online, there is often a specific starting date for the program. You’ll proceed through the curriculum one course at a time, in a prescribed order. Sometimes, you’ll be able to access the courses at your convenience; school policy may be that you’ll have to complete each course within a set time period.

Admission requirements to the associate’s degree program can include a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Typical courses in the program can include surveys of the Old and New Testament, Christian doctrine, The Bible, Philosophy and Christian thought, worship and evangelism.

In order to be admitted to an online Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Ministry/Bible or Religion, you’ll only need a high school diploma or GED. Transfer credits may be accepted depending on the institution. A B.S. in Ministry is intended to prepare you to become a minister, chaplain, missionary or youth services leader. While a B.S. in Religion can likewise prepare you for the ministry, it may also serve as an educational foundation in social work, education, communications and business. Both degrees can also prepare you for further religious study. Typical courses in an online bachelor’s degree program include church ministries, the life and teachings of Christ, the art of preaching, the study and interpretation of holy texts, surveys of the Old and New Testaments, and a survey of Islam.

Which Schools Offer Online Associate’s Degrees in Ministry?

These online programs give students the chance to study topics like missions, world religions, and theology. Some are specifically designed for an easy transfer into a bachelor’s degree.

  • Regent University offers an online Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree program in Christian Studies
  • Liberty University offers an online Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree program in Religion
  • Christian Colorado University offers an online Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree program in Biblical Studies

  • Regent University offers an online Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree program in Christian Ministry
  • Crown College offers an online Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree program in Christian Ministry

What are Some Examples of Online Graduate and Postgraduate Programs?

In addition to holding a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science from an accredited school, you’ll also need at least one pastoral recommendation for admission to an online master’s degree ministry-related program. Some programs require you to have completed courses in Hebrew and Greek. Concentrations in Master of Arts programs can include religion, religious education, practical ministry, evangelism, theological studies, worship and intercultural studies.

Any of these master’s programs can prepare you for advanced ministerial studies. Typically, online master’s programs in ministry-related subjects are presented in a hybrid manner. While you’ll be able to complete most of the courses online, there will be an internship or practicum that you’ll have to complete on-campus or at an approved facility. Facilities may include churches, hospitals, prisons, elderly care facilities or industrial settings. Courses in a master’s degree program include surveys of the Old and New Testaments, systemic theology, Christian ministry, Greek, Hebrew, hermeneutics, Christian marriage and spiritual formation. Depending on your concentration, you may be required to prepare and present a thesis.

A Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) program is intended for missionaries, pastors and church leaders to broaden and intensify their personal and professional skills as Christian ministers. Although not required, you may choose to specialize in an area such as evangelism, worship, expository preaching, pastoral management, pastoral education, military ministry or counseling. You’ll generally be required to complete a dissertation or thesis in your specialty or in a general subject. Although largely a program of independent study, at most schools, you may be required to attend a certain number of seminars in your specialty or dealing with general topics and issues in contemporary ministry.

  • Liberty University offers an online Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) degree program
  • Regent University offers an online Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) degree program

What Are the Benefits of a Ministry School?

Generally, all ministry schools have a similar overall mission. That mission is to prepare you academically and spiritually to take an active role in a lifetime of service to family, society, church and your occupation. Just because you attend ministry school doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll go on to become a minister or pastor. However, even an associate’s degree from an accredited ministry school can prepare you for an entry-level ministry position in a church or church organization.

There are a number of accrediting organizations that provide databases for accredited programs and schools that offer ministry degrees. Among these organizations are the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE), the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS) and Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS). Many of the schools listed will offer online ministry programs as well.

Learn online ministry through a variety of programs. Choose your level of study from the choice of associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees.

Online Colleges in Arizona

Overview of Online Colleges in Arizona

Arizona s use of online education on a widespread scale can be traced back to 1998, with the founding of Sequoia Choice Arizona Distance Learning. a free charter school offering K-12 distance learning programs that have received approval from the Arizona Department of Education. This state has passed a wide range of legislation regarding online instruction standards, including section 15-808. which defines Arizona s online instruction services, availability, and reporting procedures. Additionally, in 2006, the Arizona State Senate Bill 1512 established the Arizona E-Learning Task Force. which works with the Board of Education to oversee online curriculum development, implementation, delivery, and funding.

Unfortunately, Arizona was one of four states to double tuition and fees at public four-year institutions between 2006-2012. While $3 million was allocated from the state s general fund in 2006 for the E-Learning Task Force s middle school online learning pilot program, Arizona s financial climate doesn t seem to bode well for online studies at post-secondary levels. The state appropriation budget for higher education has become significantly tighter, with funds dipping by -31.9% within the same time frame.
