Some of the best schools in the country provide undergraduate and/or graduate programs in communication. As communications is a broad field, many schools offer specializations.

Students who are interested in pursuing careers in communications can find undergraduate and graduate programs at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, both of which are Ivy League schools. Similar courses of study can be found at the highly competitive Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, and James Madison University, in Harrisonburg, Virginia, which also offers two bachelor’s degrees in the field. All of these universities are highly regarded by U.S. News World Report, based on it’s 2017 rankings.

1. University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia

The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia tied for eighth place on U.S. News World Report’s list of top national universities for 2017. The Annenberg School for Communication offers a Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in Communication. Courses cover a variety of subjects, including media and politics, global communication and political communication. Study abroad opportunities around the world are also available to students.

Doctoral students receive yearly research and travel funds.

2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge is a highly selective institution that only accepts 8% of all applicants. The university tied for seventh place among national universities, according to U.S. News World Report in 2017.

MIT’s Comparative Media Studies Department offers a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Comparative Media Studies. The curriculum provides a distinctive approach to the traditional study of communications, incorporating technology with courses in video games and digital worlds.

MIT’s School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences produces Said and Done, a monthly, photo-rich publication.

3. James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA

U.S. News World Report ranked James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, the eighth-best regional university in the South for 2017. Additionally, the university made Kiplinger’s Personal Finance’s Top 100 ‘Best Values in Public Colleges’ list for 2017. The School of Communication Studies offers both a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies. Seven program specialties are available, including conflict analysis and intervention, public relations, health communication and organizational communication.

First Step to BSN

The First Step to BSN Program helps adult students who have little or no prior college credits to progress toward earning their degrees. First Step features an 18-month rotation of online and accelerated core courses created specifically for adult students. After completing the First Step to BSN Program, students are prepared to apply to Union University’s Accelerated BSN Program, where they can earn their Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree in 15 months or the Traditional BSN Program.

Are You Eligible?

A First Step student must be a graduate of an accredited high school or have a state high school equivalency diploma and be at least 24 years of age. The following items must be submitted to be considered for admissions: application for admission, $50 application fee, official transcripts from all accredited institutions attended, high school transcript/GED if less than 24 college credit hours achieved, a personal statement describing why they desire to attend Union University, their personal career goals and reflect their interest in the field of nursing. Two letters of recommendation on provided forms are also required.

General Education Requirements for the Accelerated BSN Program

Please note: these courses are required for ALL applicants in order to be eligible for the Accelerated BSN Program.

The First Step to BSN Program is available on the Jackson, Germantown and Hendersonville campuses. While the application process is rolling admissions. the deadline for the fall semester is July 1st. The deadline for the spring semester is November 1st. If you are applying after these deadlines, your application may still be considered for the upcoming semester. Orientation for the First Step to BSN Program is provided prior to beginning the semester.

  1. Application: Fill out and submit the First Step to BSN Program Application (.pdf) (make sure to complete the Application, Reference Forms, Transcript Requests, Personal Statement, Standards of Admission and Community Values Statement)
  2. Read and sign the Community Values Statement and Standards of Admissions. Both signed pages must be received by the School of Nursing Admissions. (part of First Step to BSN Program Application Packet)
  3. Application Fee: The Union University application fee is $50 and is non-refundable. You have the option to pay online by credit card . You may also pay by check or money order with your supplemental application.
  4. Transcripts: Official transcripts from all accredited institutions attended, *high school transcript/GED (*if less than 24 college credit hours achieved). Please do not send transcripts for non-traditional nursing programs to Undergraduate Admissions.
  5. Reference Forms: Two reference forms are required from individuals who can attest to your academic ability and/or self-discipline to excel in the First Step to BSN program. Reference forms are a part of the First Step to BSN application.
  6. Personal Statement: Complete the personal statement found in the First Step to BSN Application. Your personal statement should be a brief description of why you desire to attend Union University, your personal career goals and reflect your interest in the field of nursing.
  7. If you are not a U.S. citizen, an international application must be completed and submitted with the BSN application. All international transcripts must be evaluated by an accredited evaluating agency found at the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services’ website: www.naces.org
  8. Applications which are incomplete by the application deadlines will be considered ineligible for admission and will not be processed.

How to Apply

  1. Enroll in one or more PBS TeacherLine courses.

  3. Once the course has begun, login to the course site. Read the graduate credit information in the “Announcements” area of the course site, and register and pay using the link provided.
  4. You will have until the course end date to register and pay for your credits with any provider.
  5. Some providers automatically send one transcript to the address on record, others require you to submit a fee and request for your grade to be sent to you. Please wait to request a transcript until your course grades have been posted by your facilitator.

Cost

The cost to obtain graduate credits is in addition to the tuition paid for the course, and is paid directly by the learner to the credit-granting institution.

In its purest form, computer science is the research and development of technology that solves specific problems. Computer science has brought the world smart phones, GPS systems, the gaming industry and tablet computing, along with technological developments that assist government, industry and medicine. In addition to creating new technology, computer scientists also make improvements to existing technology and study the ways computers can make our lives easier.

As with any branch of science, computer scientists perform research that establishes new information. This research begins with known mathematical algorithms and computer theory, and strives to constantly redefine what technology can do for us. Computer science also addresses how existing technology can be used in ways previously undiscovered, creating applications that may be faster, simpler, more efficient or less costly.

Exploring fundamental questions about computation is the first step toward designing the hardware, software and complex network systems that we rely upon. Some computer scientists focus entirely on theory, some concentrate on programming and still others work on user applications. The end result of this research includes new tools and methodologies that drive better business practice, scientific applications and social networking.

Possible Specializations

Specialization within computer science generally falls into one of three categories: hardware, software or robotics.

Hardware refers to the machinery of computers. Hardware consists of the processors and chips that send, receive and process information. It can also extend to peripherals that function outside of the computer, like printers, disk drives, monitors, keyboards, tracking devices or game controllers.

Software. on the other hand, is the tool with which we instruct computers to perform tasks. Software programs can include Internet browsers, game systems, GPS technology, search engines or social network applications that are operable on a smartphone. Software design is highly complex and demands accuracy and precision.

Robotics explores how computers interact with our world, seeking ways for computers to reproduce tasks performed by humans. Robotics specialists work closely with both hardware and software designers to create effective robots and explore their full potential.

Degree Types

The four core degree levels for computer science come with their own distinct possibilities upon graduation. The higher the degree level, the more senior the computer scientist, which can mean more research-intensive, academically grounded positions. Review brief depictions of each degree below.

Associate

An entry-level degree largely designed for students to get their bearing in the computer science field. Once an associate in computer science is earned, they can then pursue a bachelor s, ideally with many core credits already earned. While full-time compsci positions are hard to acquire with an associate s alone, the programming knowhow and fundamental skills taught at this level are an excellent introduction to the field. Particularly talented programmers may only need an associate s to land a position, relying on their own affinities to fill in what a bachelor s or graduate degree could teach them.

Bachelor s

Bachelor s in computer science programs require mathematics, physics and engineering classwork. There are a number of interdisciplinary specializations available for talented computer scientists, but students must first master programming, algorithms and network systems.

Master s

Graduates may pursue a master s in computer science. which imparts even more practical knowledge to its candidates. Generally two years in length, a master s program provides a working knowledge of some of the most current applications in use.

Ph.D.

Computer scientists who are interested in research may opt to pursue a Ph.D. in computer science. Ph.D. programs delve deeply into computational theory and encourage students to innovate within the field. Students who complete the Ph.D. program, usually within 4 to 6 years after undergraduate school, are groomed for a career performing research projects and teaching.

Ideal Candidates for Computer Science

Computer scientists are generally logical thinkers and good problem-solvers. Creativity is also a necessary trait for developing innovative ideas, and an affinity for mathematics is definitely helpful. If you have these traits, along with good critical thinking skills and close attention to detail, computer science may be the field for you.

It is important to note that computer scientists usually work in a collaborative environment; these positions do not entail working alone in front of a computer. Effective communications skills and the ability to function on a team are also essential.

If the course curriculum and career possibilities for computer scientists appeal to you, you may be that special breed of mathematician and creative puzzle-solver that the industry requires. Research undergraduate degree programs in computer science, and consider scheduling a meeting with a professor or advisor to discuss a program in more depth. Research student affiliates of professional computer science networking groups, or consider taking part in a local computer science club to make contacts and explore the field.

Career Pathways

Computer scientists fresh out of an undergraduate program have several choices. The majority of these graduates accept an entry-level position in programming, software engineering or web development. Entry-level titles may include:

Many vets wouldn’t have seen some specific goat diseases before and are unaware of the critical differences in presentations of common livestock diseases when they occur in goats, rather than in sheep or cattle. It can be very difficult to treat or control certain goat diseases, when culling isn’t an option, unlike other commercial livestock. This Woman Has Cholinergic Urticaria, A Condition That Makes Her Allergic To Her Own Sweat

Julie Reid has refused to leave her apartment during the daytime for the past three years, which is rare in sunny Clearwater, Fla. As a former gymnast and dance instructor, much of Reid’s life was devoted to physical activity and putting on a show for people. That was until she developed a disorder that left her allergic to her own sweat. Today, she spends the majority of her time avoiding the sun and people.

“I’ve lived in Florida for eight-and-a-half years now,” Reid wrote on a website that chronicles her harrowing experience. “Three years ago, in March 2013, I was working at a gymnastics gym for my fourth year in a row, and I was also a dance teacher. And I loved my life. And out of nowhere, I developed a rare skin condition called cholinergic urticaria. I am allergic to my own sweat. [And tears.]”

Cholinergic urticaria is a hypersensitive skin condition characterized by an immediate reaction triggered by heat, emotional stress, or exercise. Although dermatologists know the episodes are caused by environmental factors that raise our temperature and cause sweating, what causes people to develop this condition is unknown. Like most people who have it, Reid has no idea where it came from. The hives that break out all over her skin are painful and can last for days. Aquagenic urticaria is a similar condition in which hives are triggered by water.

Since her diagnosis, Reid has lost her job and gained more than 100 pounds. She doesn’t go outside in order to avoid the Florida heat and the stares of people looking at her hives. Most days she doesn’t even feel like getting out of bed and she says she recently started to exhibit symptoms of depression and agoraphobia. Not only is Reid out of work, but she has also lost her health insurance and was denied disability.

“I have not worked in three years because it is physically impossible for me,” she said. “I wake up covered in hives every day, even though I have the air conditioner on. I have laid in bed for the last three years straight to avoid sweating, and it breaks my heart every single day. I miss my old life so much. One without itching and without pain. I even dream about it. But when I wake up, only then does it turn into a nightmare.”

Reid started her website about living with cholinergic urticaria to help spread awareness of the condition and the people suffering from it. Bouts of hypersensitivity to heat can stop as quickly as they started, but there is no universal timeline for how long symptoms can last.

Treatment options are also scarce and underresearched. Although doctors may prescribe antihistamines to reduce itching and redness, some patients take a proactive approach that includes protective clothing, sunscreen, or in Reid’s case, avoiding the sun altogether and staying in a cool place.

The degree enables students to fulfill the undergraduate general education requirements of most four-year science degree programs. Students are responsible for checking specific major requirements of baccalaureate institutions in the year prior to transferring.

There are two degree track options:

  • Track One is for science students who wish to focus on biological and environmental/resource sciences, geology and earth science, or chemistry.
  • Track Two is for students who wish to focus on engineering, computer science, physics, or atmospheric science.

Division

Bachelor of Science Degree (B.S.) in Computer Science from Bellevue College meets the critical and pervasive demand for rigorously trained computer science professionals. Seeking accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), this degree program will prepare graduates to apply mathematical foundations, algorithmic principles, and computer science theory in the design of computer and software based systems of varying complexity.

In conjunction with preparing students to undertake these assorted design responsibilities, the degree aims to teach students to comprehend the tradeoffs among various modeling and design choices. Even more critical to students success, the degree will offer students applied experience by connecting them in numerous ways to industry professionals as well as require them to undertake a senior capstone project.

  • At least 45 quarter credits for the degree must be completed in residence at Bellevue College, of which 30 credits must be upper division.

College Academic Distribution Requirements (CADR)

Freshmen and transfer applicants must complete a minimum level of preparation prior to applying for admissions into Computer Science. Completion in six subject areas: English, Mathematics, Social Sciences/Social Studies, world Languages, Lab Science, Senior Year Math-Based Quantitative, and Arts. These minimum academic subject areas are set by the Washington Student Achievement Council. Most applicants have completed these requirements in high school, or through college course work.

SAT or ACT scores are required only for applicants with fewer than 40 transferable college credits.

Liz Dallas, Texas: I m 62 and still working. I was divorced at 45 after 26 years of marriage. How do I determine if I m better off filing under my ex s Social Security or my own?

Larry Kotlikoff: Your ex has to be over 62 before you can file to receive a divorcée benefit. If your ex is deceased, you can file to receive a survivor benefit on his record, provided you didn t remarry before age 60.

I ll assume your ex is over 62. Here s the rub. If you file before full retirement age for a retirement benefit, you ll be deemed to be filing for a divorcée spousal benefit. And if you file for a divorcée spousal benefit before full retirement age, you ll be deemed to be applying for a retirement benefit. In other words, Social Security deems you to be filing for both when you file for one before full retirement age.

And once you have filed or have been deemed to have filed for a retirement benefit, your spousal benefit becomes your excess spousal benefit. This may be calculated as zero, as described in many other columns (see the answer to Jeff in last week s column ). If it s not zero, it may be very small. Plus, taking it before full retirement age will lead it to be reduced. Your retirement benefit will also be reduced because you are taking it or being forced to take it early.

MORE FROM LARRY KOTLIKOFF:

So, let s not have you file now. Instead, how about you wait until full retirement age 66 in your case and apply just for your spousal benefit and wait until 70 to apply for your retirement benefit. Your spousal benefit under this strategy will be your full spousal benefit, equal to half of your ex s full retirement benefit.

If you were desperate for income, I d temper my suggestion. But you say you are still working. Paul is past your age. He s still working and doing a damn fine job of it. Neither he nor I think anyone should stop working if they like their jobs and are up to it physically. Life can be too long to retire!

Janet B. Hemet, Calif.: I ve been trying to figure out when or if I should take benefits based on my ex-husband s account. He is nine years older than I am, and we were married for 30 years. I have worked my whole life.

Larry Kotlikoff: If you play your cards right you can do both. The trick is to wait until full retirement age, apply just for your divorcée spousal benefit, and then at 70 apply for your own retirement benefit. If you have a pretty high maximum age of life, waiting to collect your retirement benefit will provide you higher lifetime benefits because Social Security strongly rewards waiting, up to a point, to collect benefits. But you can t engage in this strategy if you apply for either a spousal or retirement benefit before full retirement age (see the answer to Liz s question above).

Helen Eureka, Calif.: I am twice divorced and began taking my own Social Security benefit at age 66. My first husband died last year. We were married over 10 years. Am I eligible to collect his Social Security benefit?

Larry Kotlikoff: You may or may not receive a higher benefit from your ex s work record. But yes, you are eligible to collect on it. You ll receive the larger of either your survivor or retirement benefit. If you are under 70, you can suspend your own retirement benefit until age 70 and just take, between now and age 70, your excess survivor benefit, which will equal the difference between your survivor benefit and your own retirement benefit inclusive of any delayed retirement credits you get from having waited to collect. And then at 70, you could restart your retirement benefit at a higher value thanks to the application of the delayed retirement credits. But check with the Social Security Administration to see if collecting on your ex s record would result in a higher benefit.

Brian Ivey Lakewood, Wash.: I was married to a woman from Korea for 10 years. In that time she became a U.S. citizen and worked for several years. We divorced and she returned to Korea to live in 1988. I have never re-married. My question is, can I collect a portion of the Social Security benefits she earned while working in the United States?

Larry Kotlikoff: Yes, from what I understand you can collect divorcée spousal benefits and, if she dies before you, survivor benefits based on her earnings record. But this presupposes she is eligible to collect a retirement benefit. For this, she needs 40 quarters of covered employment. Also, you must both be at least age 62 for either of you to collect spousal benefits on the other s work record.

Mike Hawthorne: I ve been retired (industrial disability) since 2001 and have been collecting my pension since. I was told that I should collect Social Security as well. What are my option?

Larry Kotlikoff: If you are able to qualify for Social Security disability benefits, do so. You ll collect them through full retirement age and then automatically convert to your full retirement benefit unless you follow the strategy outlined in this article .

Jane Grand Rapids, Mich.: My husband passed away at age 62 and I am 58. I can collect survivor benefits at age 60. Will this reduce the amount of retirement benefits I receive? Or do I keep receiving survivor benefits instead?

Larry Kotlikoff: Unlike taking spousal benefits early, which forces you to take your retirement benefit early, taking your survivor benefit early (and age 60 is the earliest you can do that), doesn t force you to take your own retirement benefit at the same time. You can, for example, take reduced survivor benefits starting at 60, and at 70 apply for your own retirement benefit. At that point, your Social Security check (apart from deductions for Medicare Part B premiums) will equal the larger of either your own retirement benefit or your survivor benefit. Your retirement benefit will be 76 percent higher after inflation than were you to start it at age 62.

But this may not be your best strategy. It may be better to take your reduced retirement benefit at 62 and take your unreduced survivor benefit at 66. Software can tell you what s best.

For your criminal psychology major, you should consider first earning a Bachelor’s degree in criminal psychology. There are a few selected Bachelor’s degree programs in forensic psychology, but they are few and far between. Some Bachelor’s-level programs do allow you to choose a specialty, so you may be able to take courses in forensic psychology while earning your undergraduate degree. At this level, you may spend four years taking classes like Organizational Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, and the Psychology of Personality. Your time as a student isn’t done yet! You’ll need to find graduate programs in forensic psychology that lead to a Master’s of Science in Forensic Psychology. These forensic psychology Masters degree courses offer the training you need to effectively work with witnesses, victims, and criminals, while helping you learn the ins and outs of the American legal system. It’s obvious that it takes a lot of work to become a criminal psychologist, but what is it like to work as a forensic psychologist? Your job duties may change from day to day, depending on which cases you’ve been assigned to and how full your caseload is. Part of your job duties rotates around questioning suspects. You may have to find out if they are mentally fit to stand trial and if they have enough mental competence to understand what is being asked of them. This also involves watching for signs of mental illness or for faked signs of mental illness. For those that have already been convicted or who are being tried for a crime, you may determine their risk for committing future crimes or their mental state at the time of committing a crime.

Forensic psychology is a highly specialized field; as a result, most psychologists do not work full-time on cases.     What s So Bad About Casual Drug Use?

    So Representative Trey Radel, the Republican from Florida, a self-styled “conservative voice ” in Congress, has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of cocaine possession. And Toronto’s city council has stripped Mayor Rob Ford of much of his power after it came out that he had smoked crack (never mind that Ford’s well-known drunken antics were not cause for such censure).

    Rather than arguing whether such figures are hypocrites (Radel voted in favor of mandatory drug testing for food-stamp beneficiaries) or debating how they should attempt damage control (he’s also pledged to enter a substance-abuse program after paying a fine and receiving a year’s probation), let’s ask a more basic question: What’s so scandalous about casual drug use?

    Yes, some substances are illegal (though as the case of marijuana shows, this status is subject to change). But absent other indicators of dangerous and antisocial behavior — like driving while intoxicated — why should snorting coke be treated any differently than, say, drinking a beer?

    Prohibitionists typically deny the very possibility of responsible or voluntary use of currently illegal substances. They argue that drugs such as coke, heroin, ecstasy, methamphetamine and even marijuana are verboten precisely because they simply can’t be used casually. Any use either already constitutes abuse or quickly leads to it. “Drugs are not dangerous because they are illegal,” former drug czar William Bennett and former Health, Education and Welfare Secretary Joseph Califano wrote in a 2011 Wall Street Journal op-ed, “they are illegal because they are dangerous.”

    Nearly 50% of people have tried an illegal drug at least once, yet most don’t repeat the experience. With cocaine, most who have tried it not only don’t go on to became addicts under even the most expansive possible definition of the term, they don’t even go on to become regular users.

    According to the latest National Survey on Drug Use and Health. 14.5% of Americans ages 12 and older have tried cocaine at least once, but just 1.8% report using the drug recreationally in the past year. And just 0.6% have used it in the past 30 days, which would seem to be the minimal definition of a casual user.

    The same pattern is true for heroin, which is typically talked about as magically addictive. Fear of the drug is surely one of the reasons why just 1.8% of Americans have ever tried it at all. But only 0.3% report using it in the past year and just 0.1% in the past month. That pattern simply shouldn’t be possible if these drugs were as addictive as commonly thought.

    In the early 1970s, researcher Lee N. Robins led a study commissioned by the Department of Defense that followed tens of thousands of Vietnam War veterans as they returned to the U.S. Use of narcotics and heroin was rampant among soldiers stationed in Southeast Asia, with as many 20% showing signs of addiction. Yet during the first year back, “only 5% of those who had been addicted in Vietnam were addicted in the U.S.” and “at three years, only 12% of those addicted in Vietnam had been addicted at any time in the three years since return, and for those readdicted, the addiction had usually been very brief.” It wasn’t for lack of access to junk, either: half of the returning addicts said they’d tried heroin at least once since arriving back home.

    As my Reason colleague Jacob Sullum has documented, such take-it-or-leave-it findings are common in drug research. In his 2004 book Saying Yes and other places, he’s detailed work in which researchers find a surprising range among heroin users, including a study that concluded. “It seems possible for young people from a number of different backgrounds, family patterns and educational abilities to use heroin occasionally without becoming addicted.

    It’s also true that regular drug users can often function quite well. Sigmund Freud used cocaine habitually for years, and his first major scientific publication was about the wonders of the drug (he eventually forsook it). Another pioneering late 19th and early 20th century man of medicine, William Halsted, was dependent on cocaine and morphine during an illustrious career that revolutionized and modernized surgical techniques.

    None of this is a brief for snorting cocaine, shooting heroin or smoking marijuana (a substance that 58% of Americans think should be legal for recreational use) any more than it is a plea for drinking single-malt whiskey or pinot noir.

    But in an age in which we are expected to use legal drugs (like beer) and prescription medications (Adderall) responsibly, it’s time to extend that same notion to currently illegal substances whose effects and properties are widely misunderstood. Indeed, the effects of coke, heroin and the rest are a mystery partly because their outlaw status makes it difficult both to research them and have honest discussions about them.

    Radel has announced that he’ll be taking a leave of absence from Congress while he enters rehab. Perhaps he does need to sober up — that’s really for him and his family to decide — but it’s far from clear that his problem is particular to cocaine or illegal drugs. Indeed, in announcing his plans, he didn’t blame cocaine for his troubles but “the disease of alcoholism ,” which he says led him to make really bad decisions. And alcohol, after all, is perfectly legal.

    SUV Review: 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe XL Limited

    A mild refresh for Hyundai’s mid-sized SUV

    Not normally given to hyperbole, Hyundai Auto Canada is nonetheless stretching the definition of the word “extensive” in announcing the changes made to the largest model in its lineup, the mid-sized Santa Fe XL sport-ute. And, talk about getting a jump on the year, said refreshed XL is being released as a 2017 model.

    It’s not that I’m making light of the popular three-row SUV; it’s just that these revisions are really subtle — at least to someone not intimately connected with the South Korean automaker. Of course, another way of looking at it is that Hyundai is confident it got the essentials right when it initially launched the XL for the 2014 model year, and the 2017 version’s “fluidic sculpture” styling merely needs a tweak here and there to be competitive with its rivals. Speaking of which, these would include other three-row models such as the Toyota Highlander. Nissan Pathfinder. Honda Pilot. Kia Sorento. Ford Explorer and GMC Acadia .

    For those with keen eyesight, exterior changes to the biggest Santa Fe — there’s also the smaller, five-passenger Sport version — include new headlights, grille, taillights, bumpers, wheel design and standard LED daytime running lights (with aerodynamic vents that improve airflow by shuttling air around the front wheels). Inside, there’s a new centre stack (that looks a lot like the old centre stack) with a standard five-inch LCD touchscreen, plus an “extensive” list of new features.

    What hasn’t changed is the powertrain. There’s nothing fancy here — no turbocharged four-cylinder or hybrid setups — just the Lambda II 3.3-litre DOHC V6 with gasoline direct injection that pumps out a solid 290 horsepower and 252 lb.-ft. of torque. Interestingly, even though the XL is built in Korea, the engine was tuned at the Hyundai America Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to ensure “it suits the preferences of North American drivers.” If that means something that will haul, the XL delivers; its maximum towing capacity of 2,268 kilograms (5,000 pounds) is ideal for pulling weekend toys.

    It also provides the 1,840-kilogram all-wheel-drive SUV (1,784 kg for the base front-drive model) with decent zip — instrumented testing done a couple of years ago had the XL accelerating to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds and pulling off an 80-to-120 passing move in 6.6 seconds. Given no change in the powertrain and no weight gain, the 2017 version should post an identical result.

    As in the Santa Fe Sport, XL models now come with Drive Mode Select, which adjusts the steering, throttle and six-speed transmission in response to whichever of the Sport, Eco, or Normal settings is preferred. There’s nothing extreme here; it’s a fairly mild progression between each setting.

    The V6 is mated to a six-speed automatic with Shiftronic manual mode. All models feature an ActiveEco system that modifies engine and transmission control to smooth out throttle response and, says Hyundai, increase real-world fuel economy by up to seven per cent. For all that, my test average of 16.5 L/100 km — predominantly suburban commuting — was no better than most SUVs the size of the XL.

    All trim levels save the base model get Hyundai’s advanced active AWD system, which activates automatically as needed, apportioning power in order to optimize traction. Under normal conditions, it distributes power to the front wheels only. While it might lack the sophistication of AWD systems in such legendary off-road brands as Jeep and Land Rover, it worked just fine during a day of freezing rain and ice. The AWD system incorporates Active Cornering Control, part of the vehicle stability management system, which helps the XL manage acceleration in a corner. To improve traction and cornering performance, braking force is applied to the inside rear wheel when accelerating through a turn.

    Ride and handling is quite satisfactory for a sport-ute, though nothing extraordinary. All Santa Fes, big and small, have a MacPherson strut front suspension and a fully independent multi-link rear suspension, with stabilizer bars at both ends.

    The XL increases second-row legroom by 50 millimetres and cargo capacity by 240 litres relative to the five-passenger Santa Fe Sport. Standard for the XL is a 40/20/40 split-folding second-row bench seat for seven-passenger capability. Optional, as in the case of the tester, is a six-passenger layout with second-row captain’s chairs. Access to the third row — a 50/50 split-folding bench seat — is tight, and, with just 800 mm of legroom, the back row is best left to the young and flexible.

    New for 2017 is the Ultimate model, which, as its name obviously suggests, is the top-end trim, with all the bells and whistles. The tester was a Limited, the next-highest model, still fully featured with the usual modern conveniences, including heated/ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, 12-speaker premium audio system, eight-inch high-resolution touchscreen with navigation system and Android Auto, blind-spot detection, sunroof, rear-passenger HVAC controls and vents and much more.

    One thing Hyundai still hasn’t quite got a grasp on is a cabin “presence” befitting a vehicle priced at more than $44,000. Layout is still heavily skewed toward function, with a black plasticky interior bordering on the dull. On the plus side, the dash layout has a nice design to it and features big and well-marked buttons and knobs to handle the various functions.

    The Santa Fe XL is easy to drive and is a competent all-around, four-season family vehicle. Yet, despite the makeover, it’s looking a little ordinary up against the likes of Honda ’s redesigned 2016 Pilot and the just-unveiled — at the New York Auto Show — 2017 Toyota Highlander. The upshot is that while it should still be on the list for those shopping three-row SUVs/crossovers, it shouldn’t be the only model there.

    What’s the best piece of advice you can give a future firefighter (or fire investigator, inspector, etc.) in your city or state?

    It is a career filled with risk and challenges. There is also a difference between being a firefighter and a professional firefighter. It is all based on self-determination. Take the opportunity to prepare yourself and become a well-rounded candidate by doing the following: 1. Education. Attend college and work towards an A.S. degree at a minimum. Consider classes that specialize in hazardous materials, emergency medical services, fire prevention and technology. 2. Experience. Consider opportunities that enable you to work with a team; learn building construction, auto mechanics or other jobs that develop mechanical skills, or any other job that is in line with the knowledge, skills, and abilities of being a firefighter. 3. Be involved in your community through service projects, coaching, etc. 4. Obtain certifications that demonstrate a desire to be a firefighter, such as E.M.T, Firefighter 1, Hazardous Materials Operations, Confined Space Rescue, etc. 5. Demonstrate good judgment. When we hire personnel we perform background investigations. We look at previous drug and alcohol use, driving record, use of social media, etc.

    What educational path would you recommend for firefighters or other fire service professionals in your city or state who wish to advance their careers?

    We accept personnel who have, at a minimum, received a high school diploma or GED. These will not be enough against the competition. One needs to consider an A.S. degree at a minimum, even a bachelor’s degree. Look at a Firefighter 1 program. Consider becoming an E.M.T. or Paramedic. As one progresses in their career, there are many avenues of education and certification, which will carry one to the top. Many of these are listed by the State Fire Marshals Office in California. Also consider classes at the national level like from the Department of Homeland Security-National Fire Academy.

    What makes firefighting and the fire services unique in your city or state? Please be as specific as you can.

    What makes firefighting unique in our jurisdiction is the wide variety emergencies we can have based on the topography. We have an ocean, coastal mountains, wildland urban interface, streams and lakes, a major highway through our jurisdiction, and unfortunately we are prone to natural disasters. We are also a tourist destination. All of these afford us an opportunity to be challenged with a wide variety of emergency calls or other types of calls for service.

    The CSU campus in Los Angeles offers an upper-division program for students aiming at specialized fire science careers or administrative and managerial roles in fire services.

    Program Name: Fire Protection Administration and Technology

    Program Description: Because Cal State LA does not offer lower-division fire science courses, the Fire Protection Administration and Technology program is a “2 + 2” articulation program. This means that students must first complete two years at one of California’s many community colleges, and then transfer to Cal State LA for the remaining two years of this bachelor’s degree program.

    The majority of fire science programs are relegated to lower-division coursework at the community college level. The school reports that this is the only program of its kind in the state, potentially leading graduates to occupations such as arson investigators, fire prevention specialists, fire loss insurance claims adjusters and fire station chiefs. This program is designed to equip graduates with the skills and credentials needed to compete for fire services administrative and supervisory roles, managing and commanding large-scale fire operations.

    The fire protection administration curriculum encompasses subjects such as fire defense planning, fire disaster administration, fire prevention administration, fire protection and the community, fire protection systems, technological aspects of the urban environment, and interpretation and enforcement of building codes. Students have taken advantage of internships with several local city governments as well organizations ranging from Sony Picture Studios to the U.S. Forest Service. The program is offered through the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Technology.

Both the associate degree and certificate coursework in the Fire Technology program incorporate the standard curriculum recommended by the California State Chancellor and the State Fire Marshal. The program covers guidelines and protocols that are in place to protect the safety of fire professionals and the public. The program was designed under the guidelines of the California Fire Service Training and Education System, the Dept. of Transportation, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Fire Academy. Most fire technology courses, up to about 30 units, can serve as transfer credits to the CSU system.

    The physical nature of firefighting means some education must entail hands-on training, but there are many programs available through online education. Distance learning programs range from certificates to master’s degrees, and can cover much of what would be taught at a traditional campus. This should result in more than 20,000 new positions nationwide. Considerable competition is expected, but candidates who complete some of the coursework offered in fire science degree programs can help set themselves apart in the hiring process.

    BLS data placed the median annual wage for firefighters at $45,600 in 2013, which is about 30 percent higher than the national average salary across all occupations. The bottom 10 percent of firefighter salaries in 2013 brought in less than $21,960 per year, while the top 10 percent earned $80,430 or more.

    After they’ve accumulated enough experience on the job, firefighters with degrees in fire science can qualify for other positions with higher expected rates of pay. Fire inspectors and investigators, for example, earned a median annual wage of $55,440 in 2013. First-line supervisors of fire service personnel took home a 2013 median salary of $70,040, with the highest 10 percent of earners making $111,120 or more.

Students with a non-quantitative undergraduate degree and less than five years of work experience will be considered on an exceptional basis if (1) their work experience is in the area of business analytics or marketing research or (2) they have developed a strong quantitative background through additional coursework or relevant work experience. The program will only admit students who have a solid foundation in quantitative methods, particularly knowledge of probability and statistics and the use of statistical applications such as R, SAS, STATA, and Matlab.

    Additionally, each student must demonstrate evidence of programming proficiency from prior college coursework, professional experience, a continuing education program, Coursera, or EdX. If you are new to R we recommend you also complete a course on programming in R from Data Camp or Coursera .

    A completed MS in Business Analytics application will include the following components:

    1. Application Form

    2. Transcripts

    You may provide academic transcripts in two ways: upload a PDF or Word document of your transcripts directly into the online application, or you can have your academic records sent to us from the institutions at which you studied. If you upload your documents and are offered admission, official transcripts of all your previous academic work will be required to verify the information provided in the uploaded files.

    For international applicants ONLY: All international transcripts require an official translation into English by a certified translator. International applicants must submit a certified copy of their diploma indicating the degree received.

    3. Resume or CV

    Submit your up-to-date resume or CV.

    4. Quantitative Background

    Provide details regarding your experience with computational programming (for example, C++) and with statistical, econometrics and mathematical applications and tools (for example, SAS, Stata, MatLab, R, S-Plus, Mathematica).

    5. Recommendations

    All applicants are required to submit two recommendations. It is highly encouraged that recommendations be submitted online. However, the recommendation form can be downloaded and signed, sealed and sent to the Rady School directly. It is most important that letters of recommendation be completed by individuals who are in a position to analyze your ability and academic promise.

    6. Statement of Purpose

    Your Statement of Purpose should be no longer than 500 words, double-spaced, 12-point font. The Rady Mission Statement: The Rady School of Management develops ethical and entrepreneurial leaders who make a positive impact in the world through innovation, collaboration and knowledge. Please choose two of the following words from our mission statement: entrepreneurial, innovation, collaboration, knowledge. Discuss how the two words you have chosen have played a role in your academic and/or professional career.

    7. GMAT or GRE Scores

    The MS in Business Analytics program accepts either GMAT or GRE scores. You may submit your application before taking the GMAT or GRE, but the final admissions decision will not be made until we have received your scores. Waiver considered for those with an M.D. or Ph.D. in a quantitative discipline, or Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline with at least 8 years of relevant work experience.

    • The code for the GMAT is 3NS-ZK-33.
    • The code for the GRE is 4836.

    8. TOEFL, IELTS or PTE Score (for international applicants only)

    • TOEFL scores are to be sent from ETS to institutional code 4836-02. Minimum scores for TOEFL: Paper 550; Internet 80.
    • IELTS scores are to be sent directly from the British Council or test-taking institution. The minimum IELTS score is 7. Select University of California, San Diego as the institution and have them send scores directly to our Graduate Admissions office at: Rady School of Management, Master of Science in Business Analytics Program, UC San Diego, 9500 Gilman Drive #0553, La Jolla, CA 92093-0553
    • PTE test takers must select the University of California, San Diego as a score recipient, then submit a copy of your scores directly to our Graduate Admissions office at: Rady School of Management, UC San Diego, 9500 Gilman Drive #0553, La Jolla, CA 92093-0553. Include your registration ID number and exam date on your application. Official scores will be verified online. The minimum PTE score is 65.

    9. Application Fee

    The Summer 2017 application fee is $105 for US citizens or Permanent Residents; $125 for international applicants. The non-refundable fee is payable by credit card through the online application. You may also pay by check, following the instructions in the online application. If you choose to pay by check, please note that your application will not be processed until your check has been received.

    After You Apply

    • After you submit your application, you will receive confirmation and instructions for further action, if necessary.
    • Once you have submitted a complete application, it will be reviewed to determine if the admissions committee would like to schedule an interview.
    • Interviews are required for admission and are by invitation only. We prefer to conduct interviews in person to get to know you better and learn more about your background and goals. For out-of-state candidates, arrangements can be made for Skype interviews.
