Loan servicing software

Welcome to the Student Loan Servicing Alliance website!

The Student Loan Servicing Alliance (SLSA) is a non-profit, membership organization of student loan servicers and software providers in the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) and Federal Direct Loan Program (FDLP). SLSA has approximately 30 members, and together we service more than 90 percent of all outstanding student loans. Our members provide the full range of federal loan servicing operations, conversion from in-school status to repayment, customer service, payment processing, collections, and claims processing. Many of our servicers also service Private Education Loans.

SLSA’s main focus is on operational and technical issues that impact customer service and program administration. We identify obstacles and opportunities within the loan programs that can benefit from our expertise and leadership, and we formulate solutions that achieve simplification and standardization. SLSA develops industry positions and promotes best practices, helping its members provide the highest level of quality customer service. We also work with other organizations to support the continuing enhancement and streamlining of the student loan programs.

Parents, Students, Borrower Information

Federal Student Loans are the number one source of post-secondary education financing in America. If you are a parent or student beginning your search for a student loan, it is important to know what type of Federal Student Aid your school offers. For loans, most schools offer the Federal Direct Loan Program (FDLP). In the Direct Loan Program, your loan funds come directly from the Federal Government and are serviced by one of several student loan servicers. If you borrowed a Federal Loan before 2010, your funds may have come as a Federal Stafford Loan from your choice of participating lenders in the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP). If you have a Federal Student Loan, and you know who your servicer is, use our directory to find information about how to contact them.

Private Education Loans (also known as supplemental or alternative student loans) are also used by some students and parents to pay for college. There are several types of Private Education Loan providers, including states, banks, credit unions, and other for-profit and not-for-profit lenders. Many SLSA members service Private Education Loans, as well as Federal Student Loans. If you have a Private Education Loan, and you know who your servicer is, use our directory to find information about how to contact them.

Trying to Modify your Mortgage?

Not Sure of your options, or what to do?

People say things are getting better, but clearly there is still a huge problem and the housing crisis has a ways to go before calming down.

We understand what you are going through. Most homeowners ‘try’ and do a Mortgage Modification, but most banks will reject your application. (Get your FREE book on this subject below).

If you owe more than your home is worth, and you have a ‘hardship’ you may qualify for a Mortgage Modification or a Short Sale.

If you must do a ‘Short Sale’, not only will we sell your home, but in most cases the bank will ‘forgive’ the outstanding debt, and in many cases you can get up to $10,000.00 or more in moving credit at the closing.

Not every Real Estate Agent can help you. As a matter of fact, most agents have no idea how to do a ‘Short Sale’, or what is involved with a Mortgage Modification, never mind complete one successfully. We have a 95% success rate at getting Short Sales approved.

WE OFFER STATEWIDE SERVICE THOUGHOUT CONNECTICUT.

June 2, 2011

We would not recommend enforcement action to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission ( Commission ) under Section 206(4) of the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 ( Advisers Act ) and Rule 206(4)-3 thereunder if any investment adviser that is required to be registered pursuant to Section 203 of the Advisers Act, pays to BAC Home Loans Servicing, LP ( HLS or the Settling Firm ) or any of its associated persons, as defined in Section 202(a)(17) of the Advisers Act, a cash solicitation fee, directly or indirectly, for the solicitation of advisory clients in accordance with Rule 206(4)-3, 1 notwithstanding an injunctive order issued by the United States District Court for the Central District of California (the Judgment ) that otherwise would preclude such an investment adviser from paying such a fee, directly or indirectly, to the Settling Firm. 2

Our position is based on the facts and representations in your letter dated June 1, 2011, particularly the representations of the Settling Firm that:

it will conduct any cash solicitation arrangement entered into with any investment adviser registered or required to be registered under Section 203 of the Advisers Act in compliance with the terms of Rule 206(4)-3, except for the investment adviser’s payment of cash solicitation fees, directly or indirectly, to the Settling Firm, which is subject to the Judgment; the Judgment does not bar or suspend the Settling Firm or any person currently associated with the Settling Firm from acting in any capacity under the federal securities laws; 3 it will comply with the terms of the Judgment, including, but not limited to, the payment of compensation to Servicemembers Civil Relief Act eligible servicemembers; and for ten years from the date of the entry of the Judgment, the Settling Firm or any investment adviser with which it has a solicitation arrangement subject to Rule 206(4)-3 will disclose the Judgment in a written document that is delivered to each person whom the Settling Firm solicits (a) not less than 48 hours before the person enters into a written or oral investment advisory contract with the investment adviser or (b) at the time the person enters into such a contract, if the person has the right to terminate such contract without penalty within 5 business days after entering into the contract.

This position applies only to the Judgment and not to any other basis for disqualification under Rule 206(4)-3 that may exist or arise with respect to the Settling Firm.

Stephen N. Packs

Senior Counsel

Endnotes

1 Rule 206(4)-3 prohibits any investment adviser that is required to be registered under the Advisers Act from paying a cash fee, directly or indirectly, to any solicitor with respect to solicitation activities if, among other things, the solicitor is subject to an order, judgment or decree that is described in Section 203(e)(4) of the Advisers Act.

2 United States of America v. BAC Home Loans Servicing, LP f/k/a/ Countrywide Home Loans Servicing LP and Any Successors in Interest. CV11-04534 (C.D. Cal. May 31, 2011).

3 Section 9(a)(2) of the Investment Company Act of 1940 (the Investment Company Act ) provides, in pertinent part, that a person may not serve or act as, among other things, an investment adviser or depositor of any investment company registered under the Investment Company Act or a principal underwriter for any registered open-end investment company or registered unit investment trust if, among other things, that person, by reason of any misconduct, is permanently or temporarily enjoined from acting, among other things, as an underwriter, broker, dealer or investment adviser, or from engaging in or continuing any conduct or practice in connection with any such activity, or in connection with the purchase or sale of any security. Section 9(a)(3) extends the prohibition to any company any affiliated person of which is disqualified pursuant to Section 9(a)(2).

The entry of the Judgment, absent the issuance of an order by the Commission pursuant to Section 9(c) of the Investment Company Act that exempts the Settling Firm from the provisions of Section 9(a) of the Investment Company Act, would effectively prohibit the Settling Firm and companies of which it is an affiliated person from acting in any of the capacities set forth in Section 9(a) of the Investment Company Act. You state that, pursuant to Section 9(c) of the Investment Company Act, the certain affiliated persons, on behalf of themselves and future affiliated persons, submitted an application to the Commission requesting (i) an order of temporary exemption from Section 9(a) of the Investment Company Act and (ii) a permanent order exempting such persons from the provisions of Section 9(a) of the Investment Company Act.

On June 1, 2011, the Division, acting under delegated authority, issued an order granting the Settling Firm and certain affiliated persons a temporary exemption from Section 9(a) of the Investment Company Act pursuant to Section 9(c) of the Investment Company Act, with respect to the Judgment, until the date the Commission takes final action on the application for a permanent order or, if earlier, July 29, 2011. In re BAC Home Loans Servicing, LP. SEC Rel. No. IC-29688 (June 1, 2011). Therefore, such persons are not currently barred or suspended from acting in any capacity specified in Section 9(a) of the Investment Company Act as a result of the Judgment.

Update Your Contact Information

Make sure that we always have up-to-date contact information for you so we know where to send your mail. If you are deployed or traveling for training, be sure that we have your updated contact information before you leave. Sign in to Account Access to update your mailing address, phone number, and email address. This is how we will contact you about your student loans while you are away.

Third Party Permission

You can give us permission to release account information to individuals you authorize. Although they can receive specific information about your loans, they CANNOT make changes to your account. To authorize a third party to obtain your account information:

Power of Attorney

Unlike someone who is only authorized to obtain information about your account, you can provide your POA with the ability to make decisions and changes on your account. Contact your Judge Advocate General’s Corps office for more information.

Make sure your name and account number are listed on the document prior to mailing or faxing .

Reduced Payment Loan Forgiveness Options

There are options available to lower your monthly payment amount (as low as $0)! You may even be eligible for partial or complete loan forgiveness.

Income-Driven Repayment Plans

We recommend selecting one of the income-driven plans (Pay As You Earn, Income-Based, or Income-Contingent) since these plans will most likely offer you the lowest payment amount. Additionally, after making the required number of qualifying payments, your outstanding loan balance may be forgiven.

If you want to get an idea of what your payment amount may be on any of the available plans, you can utilize the repayment estimator tool .

Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF ) Program

The PSLF Program was established to reward you for your work in the public sector. In this program, your outstanding loan balance can be forgiven after you make 120 qualifying payments. The PSLF Program requires some long-term planning.

About Interest

What is Interest?

Interest is a fee an individual pays for the use of borrowed funds. When individuals enter repayment, they have to pay not only the principal (amount originally borrowed) but also an additional fee of interest on that borrowed money.

What is an Interest Notice?

  • An interest notice is an account summary that details the interest accrued on your student loan(s) during a certain period of time.
  • You receive an interest notice instead of a bill if your loan is in deferment, forbearance, grace, or in-school status.
  • An interest notice differs from a bill because you’re not required to make a payment.

Benefits of Paying Interest

Making payments on your interest notice can minimize the amount of interest that will capitalize (be added to your current principal balance) when your account enters repayment. Because less or no interest will be added to your original loan amount, your monthly payment will be less.

When Interest Accrues

Interest accrues on your unsubsidized student loan:

  • Every day, from the day the loan is disbursed until you make the last payment.
  • Even if your loan is not in repayment.

Interest accrues on your subsidized student loan:

  • Every day, from the day the repayment period starts until you make the last payment.
  • During your grace period if your loan was disbursed on or after July 1, 2012 and before July 1, 2014.

Interest does not accrue on your subsidized student loan during:

  • Your in-school status.
  • Your grace period if your loan was disbursed before July 1, 2012.
  • An approved deferment.

NOTE: If you are a first-time borrower on or after July 1, 2013, you could potentially lose the subsidy on your subsidized student loan if you do not complete your degree or certificate within 150% of the normal time allotted for completing the program in which you are enrolled.

The loss of subsidy would continue through periods of enrollment and any grace or deferment periods.

Calculating Accrued Interest

Example

Sara Student has a $10,000.00 current principal balance and 6% interest rate this year. Using the formula:

Where Can I Find My Current Interest Rate?

After signing in to Account Access. you can find your interest rate in the loan Details section, or by generating a Loan Verification Letter.

How Payments Apply to Interest vs. Current Principal Balance

When you make a payment, our computer system counts the number of days since we processed your last payment.

Then we apply your payment as follows:

  1. Accrued interest The amount of interest that accrued every day between the date of the last payment and the new payment must be satisfied first.
  2. Current principal balance The remainder then applies toward your current principal balance.

The best way to control the amount that applies toward interest versus principal is to make your payments regularly and on time. The easiest way to do this is to use Direct Debit .

    Motor Trade Insurance Guide

In the UK, motor trade insurance is a specific kind of insurance designed for self-employed individuals and business-owners involved in this industry. This could apply to many different businesses, including those dedicated to towing, servicing, and repairing vehicles and accessory fitting, as well as businesses that are involved in buying and selling vehicles.

Care, Custody, or Control in the Motor Trade

Care, custody, or control is a term that relates to how individuals and businesses undertake work on vehicles. What it means is that when a vehicle is left by its owner with a motor traderfor repair, modification, or transport, for examplethe vehicle is in the care, custody, or control of the trader. As such, the vehicle is no longer covered under the owner’s insurance. And, because all vehicles that are used on the road must have insurance, this means it falls to the motor trader themselves to typically provide insurance coverage for the vehicles in their care, custody, or control.

This may offer a significant benefit to the motor trader, because they need only one policy to cover any and all vehicles they drive or have custody of in the course of their work.

    Levels of Coverage

There are usually several different levels of motor trade insurance: risks, liability, and premises insurance.

Motor trade risk insurance could be described as the minimum level of insurance that a motor trader must have to meet their legal obligations. However, the motor trader may decide whether to buy third party insurance, third party, fire, and theft, or comprehensive coverage, as all three types meet the legal requirement.

As with individual car insurance, third party motor trade risks insurance might cover damage to the car of a third party involved in an accident. However, it doesn’t generally cover damage to the car the motor trader is driving at the time of the accident, whether it’s a personal car or a car belonging to a customer. For this insurance, comprehensive coverage could be needed.

This kind of insurance is generally required for all motor traders who drive vehicles they do not own, whether they operate a business from home or have dedicated business premises.

Motor trade liability insurance could protect the motor trader from legal liability claims that may be made as a result of faulty workmanship, or through other interactions with customers or the public. This may include claims for compensation or medical expenses made by people who are injured while on the business premises (or at the motor trader’s home if they work out of their home). Note that any business that employs at least one person may be required to have public liability insurance by law.

Motor trade premises insurance may cover the buildings, contents, and equipment used by the motor trader and their business in the course of their work.

Combined cover could include all the above levels of coverageincluding road risk and liabilityand may also include some additional elements depending on the specific policy. These might include employer liability, sales and service indemnity, business interruption, and business stock. This fully-comprehensive cover might be the most expensive motor trade insurance, and is designed primarily for large motor traders with business premises that include, for example, a garage and showroom.

    Coverage Elements and Optional Extras

Motor trade insurance may seem a bit complicated, as these policies have a number of different elements that may or may not be useful depending on the specific industry the motor trader is in. Most of these are optional, or have a number of different alternatives from which they could choose.

Number of vehicles covered: A home traderthat is, someone who works from home and does not have dedicated business premisesmay typically have only a limited number of vehicles covered by a policy. Someone who is trading from dedicated business premises could usually have a policy that covers an unlimited number of vehicles.

Vehicle coverage for secondary occupations: A motor trader could opt to have an additional vehicle covered if they have a secondary occupation that doesn’t involve the motor trade.

Demonstration coverage: This is typically limited to third party insurance, and covers vehicles when they are being driven for demonstration purposes.

Public liability: This could be an important part of motor trade insurance for all traders, whether or not they have dedicated business premises.

Special vehicle cover: Motor trade policies provide coverage for standard vehicles up a certain weight. Additional cover for certain vehicles must be purchased separately. These may include high performance vehicles, classic cars, commercial vehicles, and vehicles over the standard weight.

    Compare Motor Trade Insurance Policies

Business insurance might not come cheap, and motor trade insurance is no exception. Making a full comparison of products from different specialist motor trade insurance providers could be essential to getting value for money. When comparing motor trade insurance online, it could be good to look at the following:

    • Cost of third party insurance types versus comprehensive insurance.
    • Exclusions.
    • What’s included in a standard policy compared to what has to be purchased separately.
    • Policy elements such as number of vehicles covered, special vehicle coverage, and secondary occupation coverage.
    • Excess and no-claims discount amounts.

    Tips to Reduce Premiums

Motor trade insurance may not be particularly cheap, but a motor trader could save on motortrade insurance premiums by making careful choices about the policy they purchase and other matters.

    • If possible, avoid buying additional coverage for special vehicles. Sometimes this coverage is essential, but for smaller businesses it may not be necessary.
    • Think about how feasible it is to restrict mileage. Again, this is something that’s easier for a small local business versus a larger one that might operate in a wider area.
    • Depending on the circumstances it may be more expensive to add a private car to the policy versus getting private car insurance separately.
    • Adding extra named drivers to the policy could increase premiums significantly.
    • Some insurance providers may allow a motor trader to transfer their personal no-claims bonus so that it applies to the motor trade policy, helping to reduce premiums.
    • A good level of security could help bring premiums down.
