Who is it for?

The course has been designed for qualified NMC registered nurses to enable them to top up their existing qualifications to degree level and further develop their knowledge and skills in their profession.


The course enables practicing nurses general progression in their career or the opportunity to specialize or diversify following specialist degree pathways. It has been designed to give you a modular and flexible approach to study, giving you the opportunity to tailor the course to your personal development and goals. We offer a wide choice of modules within the programme including clinical assessment and specialised clinical knowledge.

The course will help you improve your confidence and practice, and develop your career to more senior roles.

Requirements and how to apply

You must be a qualified nurse in the UK, although your qualification can be from overseas.

  • For specialist routes you must be working within an appropriate specialist healthcare setting

In addition to the listed entry requirements, if your first language is not English you will also need IELTS: 7.0 with at least 6:5 in all components.

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study.

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course. There are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than six months
  • Students on courses of less than six months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English language course.

If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you cannot undertake any City courses on a part-time basis.

* The tuition fee for the first year of study (2017/18) for full-time UK and EU students is £9,250 and is £4,625 for part-time UK and EU students. Fees in each subsequent year of study will be subject to an annual increase limited to the Student Fees Inflation Index as determined by the UK Government s Office for Budget Responsibility. This index is derived from the All Items Retail Prices Index. We will confirm any change to the annual tuition fee to you in writing prior to you commencing each subsequent year of study.

** The tuition fee for the first year of study (2017/18) for part-time Non-EU students is £14,500 and is £7,250 for part-time Non-EU students. Fees in each subsequent year of study may be subject to annual increase, as detailed above for UK and EU students.


Future Finance Loans

Future Finance offers students loans of between £2,500 and £40,000 to help cover tuition fees and living expenses. All students and courses are considered. All loans are subject to credit checks and approval for further details please visit the City Finance website .

Teaching and learning

A blended approach to learning and teaching is adopted including taught modules; e-learning and work-based learning.

Assessments are varied to meet the practice and academic challenges of the BSc degree level programme, while recognising the need for motivating, realistic and relevant activity. Assessment includes essays; objective structured clinical examinations; practice-based assessments and seminar presentations with supporting papers. The dissertation can be either a literature review, portfolio review or a work-based project. Once you start to prepare for your research project you will also have a research supervisor, skilled in your particular discipline.

When you have successfully completed the taught modules and the dissertation, you will qualify for a BSc degree with honours. Complete just the taught modules and you will achieve a BSc ordinary degree.


Generic route

You need to achieve 120 HE6 level credits by taking modules as follows:

  • 3 programme core (compulsory) modules
  • 3 optional modules
  • 1 dissertation module (compulsory)

Specialist route

You need to achieve 120 HE6 level credits by taking modules as follows:

  • 3 programme core (compulsory) modules
  • 2 route core (compulsory) modules
  • 1 optional module
  • 1 dissertation module (compulsory)

If you have up to 30 HE6 level credits from another institution or up to 60 HE6 level credits from City, University of London these may be recorded as prior learning (APL) to replace any of the optional modules above.

City, University of London qualified diploma level nurses with 60 HE6 level credits will be exempt from the route core (compulsory) module NM3301 (Biological Foundations in Clinical Practice and Related Pharmacology).

Associate of General Studies (AGS) Degree Requirements

The Associate of General Studies degree is designed for students wishing to acquire a broad education, rather than pursue a specific college major or career technical program. Because of the flexibility of this degree, it may not fulfill requirements for transfer to a four-year institution.

The Associate of General Studies is awarded to students who meet the following:

1. Associate Degree Comprehensive Requirements

2. Associate of General Studies (AGS) Requirements:

A. General Education Requirement: Students must earn a minimum of 16 credits of General Education taken from the General Education /Discipline Studies List. These credits must come from courses taken in the following categories:

• Arts and Letters

The 16 credits must include at least one course with a minimum of three credits from each category. General Education requirements for the AGS degree will be waived for students who enroll at PCC with an AA, AAS, AGS, AS, BA, BS degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution or foreign equivalent.

B. Basic Competency Requirements in writing and math for the AGS degree:

Writing. Competency in writing must be demonstrated by either:

• Completing WR 121 with a C or better, or

• Passing a lower division collegiate* writing course for which WR 121 is a prerequisite with a C or better

Students with AA, AAS, AGS, AS, BA, BS, degrees or higher from a regionally accredited institution or foreign equivalent, will have the basic competency in writing ( WR 121 ) waived

Math. Competency in mathematics must be demonstrated by:

• Completing with a grade of C or P or better MTH 58. MTH 63 or MTH 65. or

• Passing the PCC Competency Exam for MTH 65, or

• Completing with a grade of C or P or better a MTH course (minimum of three credits) for which MTH 58. MTH 63 or MTH 65 or higher level math skills are a prerequisite

C. Elective Credit Requirements – All students must complete elective credits to meet the overall requirement of 90 credits for this degree. Elective credits may apply from any course numbered 100 or higher (either lower division collegiate or career technical). Elective credit limitations are:

• Maximum of six credits (100 level and above) of Physical Education (PE) may apply

• Maximum of six one-credit Management/Supervisory Development (MSD) workshops may apply

• Maximum of 24 credits of Occupational Skills Training (OST) classes may apply

MSc programs are one-year Master’s degrees taught in English. They are designed for students who hold a Bachelor degree in any field from leading international universities.


Custom designed for managers between the ages of 25 to 35 with previous work experience averaging 6 years, the MBA program addresses both functional and crossfunctional skills, through a fundamental and a customized thread to cover all areas of management in depth.   • If you’re not currently in Year 12, and don’t yet meet English competency, please apply to us with your Certificate IV and we will evaluate your application individually.
  • If your Diploma or Advanced Diploma is in the same subject area as the course you wish to study at ECU, you may be eligible for credit, or advanced standing. You can apply for this after you accept your offer into the course.

  • You can apply direct to us. Before you start your application, make sure you’ve made scanned copies of school or other study results and the components of your portfolio if you’re using our Portfolio Pathway .

  • If you’ve been an ECU student and are using an ATAR from previous years, or sat the STAT or the ISIT at ECU, we don’t need documents because we can check your score electronically.

Research degrees

Some research degrees have recommended submission dates for applications.

Our Doctor of Philosophy (course code L61) accepts applications all year long.

To apply for a research degree, please supply the following with your application:

  • a 300-word research abstract and a 2-page research proposal
  • facts about your work and academic history
  • references from any publications or conference papers you’ve co-authored
  • your previous academic qualifications

Note: If you’re a citizen of India, Pakistan, Nepal or Bangladesh, we may require you to apply via an ECU Authorised Agent .

If you’ve applied for a course – either directly or through an ECU Authorised Agent – you can easily track its progress through our application status check .

What happens after you’ve applied?

After your application is processed and if you’re successful:

  1. We send you an Offer Letter for a place at ECU. This will be an Offer or a Conditional Offer (you must meet the conditions of your offer), and includes course details, fees to pay and more.
  2. You complete the online acceptance and pay the ‘Fees payable now’. This includes your first semester course fees and Overseas Student Health Cover. You can accept and pay by going to the Respond to your offer page.
  3. Once you’ve successfully accepted your offer to study at ECU, and we’ve confirmed receipt of the required fees, we’ll issue a Confirmation of Enrolment. If required, this document allows you to apply for a student visa to study in Australia.
  4. Once the above steps are complete, we welcome you as an official ECU student. You should then review our pre-departure information. attend orientation and enrol in your study units.

Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions

Editors’ Update: June 2017

Following the introduction of the Methodological Expectations for Cochrane Intervention Review (MECIR) standards, we set out to produce a minor Handbook update, Version 5.2. Due to limited editorial capacity, a limited number of interim updates for Version 5.2 have been produced. The new chapters are 1, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 21 and are available as pdf versions for Cochrane members. The new chapters include minor edits to improve clarity, some limited new material and updating. There are no substantive changes to methods. For more details see the What’s new? page. T he Handbook editorial team will now proceed to the full production of Version 6 of the Handbook, to be released in 2018. Senior Scientific Editors Julian Higgins and James Thomas have reorganized some material to include recent developments. There are also several new chapters including writing a protocol, equity and specific populations, complex interventions, network meta-analysis, and synthesizing findings using non-statistical methods.

The Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions is the official guide that describes in detail the process of preparing and maintaining Cochrane systematic reviews on the effects of healthcare interventions. The current complete version of the Handbook is 5.1 (updated March 2011), edited by Julian Higgins and Sally Green.

All authors should consult the Handbook for guidance on the methods used in Cochrane systematic reviews. The Handbook includes guidance on the standard methods applicable to every review (planning a review, searching and selecting studies, data collection, risk of bias assessment, statistical analysis, GRADE and intepreting results), as well as more specialised topics (non-randomized studies, adverse effects, economics, patient-reported outcomes, individual patient data, prospective meta-analysis, qualitative research, reviews in public health and overviews of reviews).

Official translations of the Handbook are also available in Spanish and Simplified Chinese (see links above right).

The journal aims to provide a forum for high quality research encompassing all areas of psychology. It focuses on the centrality of co-construction of cultural and psychological processes and facilitates understanding psychology from diverse theoretical perspectives. The journal is publication outlet of empirical investigations; theoretical papers, reviews, methodological, applied and policy-related articles. Research in psychology is encompassing almost all areas of life. Therefore, the journal sets a preference for innovative and comprehensive reports and includes all modes of research —experimental, observational, ethnographic, textual, interpretive and survey.
