Each person in the company has a unique username/password, and nobody should log in with his username/password but him.

I want a program that would inspect the logs that includes a list of all the people that came to work today, and inspect the list of the logged in users (from the AD or wherever is), to find if there is someone in the logged-in logs that shouldn’t be there (since he isn’t in the first log). If the program finds that kind of inconsistency it should report immediately to the men in charge of the system.

The above manifest is what my boss wants, and he thinks that a SIEM system could give us that ability. That is just one example of log file cross-referencing that he wants us to have the ability to do.

Right now we have many systems (from many companies), and each one is inspecting different aspects of the company (for example, a system that give us reports from the file servers on what and whom has changed files, how much files, and any abnormality that it found; a system that checks USB insertion on PCs and so on). I would like to find a system that I can feed all of the reports to so that I can generate a cross-reference report.

As far as I have understand from the Wikipedia pages on SIEM (SIM. SEM ), this system should give us that ability.

My question is, since I need to select one of the 86 different SIEM systems that are out there, and finally implement it at the organisation, I would like your advice on what is the the system that would fit to my above needs. It should also be easy to work with as much as possible, since at the end of the day someone will have to work with that system and if it doesn’t have a meaningful interface and meaningful reports for example I wouldn’t get the results I want.

In addition to the above, I would like to know what components I should be prepared for (computer client agent, server agents and so on).

It has quite an exotic learning curve, with basic searches availabe in literally minutes, then it took me a day to understand how to build a complex search. Two more days to have a set of charts (limelines, breakdowns, gauges). I then realized that it makes more sense to create saved searches and work from thre (you can edit them more easily).

I would also suggest looking at the config files (transforms.conf in particular).

The 500 MB quota can be worked around by preparing data to be fed to splunk. The enterprise (paying) version, however, adds many useful configuration items (notably a connection to your authentication system)

Since I am in SIEM business for 5 years I will make few statements hold up for me so far. In most cases SIEM is a political decision in company because company has some budget and wants to raise it’s security awareness. Usually it comes to buying expensive product and then in the end neglecting it. So what I would look for in SIEM is options to extend it to fit your own needs as each company has it’s own set of rules and security guidelines it must / wants to follow. With that in mind, to get most of SIEM you need:

If you have sysadmins that don’t want to invest too much time in it you will also need:

Anyways, I don’t know if what I am doing is fair because I am suggesting OTUS SIEM as our own product on which we spent 4 years so far but so far we got ton of user experience and we know with which expectations they start and what they settle with in the end.

Congratulations to Julio Guitierrez UCF’s first ever hackathon sanctioned by Major League Hacking (MLH). A hackathon is an event where you have 24 (or more) contiguous hours to develop a mobile app, a game, some awesome hardware, or anything that makes your ideas come to life. Julio, with four other students, made a game for the Oculus Rift where you throw a javelin using the Myo armband. They won “Best Use of VR.”

Julio also recently landed a summer internship at Microsoft and will work for the Universal Windows Store group. Congratulations, Julio!

Lucas Pasqualin 1 of 3 Selected to Study Abroad at the Children’s Media Department of FIDMT in Erfurt, Germany

Congratulations to Lucas Pasqualin, a student working in Prodigy at IST, who has been selected as 1 of 3 undergraduate students from UCF to study abroad this summer at the Children’s Media Department of FIDMT in Erfurt, Germany. This is a result of an NSF funded project. He will have a mentor who will seek to grow his professional skills in an international research setting.

The research is primarily focused on Digital Storytelling, with an emphasis on Children’s Games and Dynamic Storytelling. The researchers would like to design a system that a child can interact with, and ask questions such as “Can you tell me a different story?”, or “What would happen if. ” The research encompasses such topics as formal methods for generating and storing new story lines, the effect of digital avatars on listener engagement, and other related technologies.

    A new study by KLAS suggests that while providers are giving thought to business intelligence needs, they still haven t honed in on favored vendors that they see as holding a leading position in healthcare. That may be, I d suggest, because the industry is still waiting on EMRs that can offer the BI functionality they really need.

    To look at the issue of BI in healthcare, KLAS interviewed execs at more than 70 hospitals and delivery systems with 200 or more beds.

    When asked which BI vendors will stand out in the healthcare industry, 41 percent of respondents replied that they weren t sure, according to a story in Health Data Management .

    Of the other 59 percent who chose a vendor, IBM, SAP, Microsoft and Oracle came up as leaders in enterprise BI applications but none of the above got more than 12 percent of the vote, HDM notes.

    Vendors that did get a nod as standing out in healthcare-specific BI included Explorys, Health Catalyst, McKesson and Humedica (Optum). IBM and Microsoft were also singled out for healthcare use, but respondents noted that their products came with high price tags.

    Meanwhile, QlikTech and Tableau Software were noted for their usability and data visualization tools though lacking in full BI toolsets, according to HDM.

    While these stats are somewhat interesting on their own, they sidestep a very important issue: when will EMRs evolve from transaction-based to intelligence-based systems. After all, an intelligence-based EMR can do more to improve healthcare in context than freestanding BI systems.

    As my colleague John Lynn notes, EMRs will ultimately need to leverage big data and support smart processes, becoming what he likes to call the Smart EMR. These systems will integrate business intelligence natively rather than requiring a whole separate infrastructure to gather insights from the tsunami of patient data being generated today.

    The reality, unfortunately, is that we re a fairly long way away from having such Smart EMRs in place. Readers, how long to you think it will take before such a next-gen EMR hits the market? And who do you think will be the first to market with such a system?

    This certification program was designed for engineering technicians working in the fire alarm industry who engage in a combination of the following fire alarm systems activities: system layout (plan preparation), system equipment selection, system installation, system acceptance testing, system trouble-shooting, system servicing, and system technical sales. Technical areas covered include applicable codes and standards, types of detectors and signaling systems, supervision requirements, power requirements, building/space structure and occupancy considerations, and basic electricity and electronics.

    NICET now has two Fire Alarm Certifications

    The Fire Alarm Systems certification is a robust credential, based on inter-related elements of system design, installation, maintenance, and inspection. It is anticipated that most AHJs who have accepted it as evidence of qualification to perform maintenance/periodic inspections of fire alarm systems will continue to do so.

During the test, you will see one question at a time, but can move forward or backwards to view or review other questions. There may be a graphic or text box to be viewed by clicking a button. Correct answers will usually be selected by clicking the boxes next to the answers. In a few questions, you may be presented a picture and asked to click on the part of the picture that correctly answers the question. Questions may have more than one correct answer, but in those cases, you will be told how many answers to choose. You will receive your score at the conclusion of your test session.

    Software, Scripts and Data Downloads

    The Geospatial Toolkit (GsT) is an NREL-developed map-based software application that provides the tools and data necessary to perform renewable energy resource assessments, targeted primarily to developing countries. The GsT enables exploration and simple analysis of renewable potential without expertise in GIS:

    • You can view solar and wind data and overlay roads, transmission lines, land use and elevation. You can zoom in and out and move all around exploring the renewable energy opportunities for a country.
    • You can run queries that will calculate the land area meeting your criteria, such as minimum resource values, proximity to infrastructure, and restricted land use and slope characteristics.
    • You can click on a location and the underlying resource values will be used to develop a HOMER file which can be used to simulate systems that will meet the loads of pre-designed off-grid loads. These files can also be used in the full version of HOMER for more sophisticated users. The application is only available on Windows platforms.

    Users can also access free GIS software to view our GIS data. The ArcGIS Explorer software can be downloaded from ESRI’s site.

    Here are instructions for using it with NREL’s GIS data:

    1. Go to the ArcGIS Explorer site and download and install the free ArcGIS Explorer software.
    2. Launch ArcGIS Explorer and go to Add Content, Shapefiles option and navigate to where you downloaded and extracted our zip files. You will not be able to classify the information, but you can select which field you would like visible by right-clicking on the content and setting the layer properties.

    DIY Alarm System Battery Replacement

    How to Test an Alarm System Battery

    Open the alarm system panel box, and locate the battery. Most panels just have the battery sitting on the bottom of the “can”. If there is a date written on the battery, and it’s at least 5 years old, replace the battery.

    If there’s no date written on it, continue with testing. Position the alarm system battery so that you have access to the terminals on the top. This usually means laying the battery on its side.

    Disconnect AC power by unplugging the low voltage transformer, if possible. If you can’t easily reach the transformer (or if you don’t know where it is), you’ll need to disconnect one of its wires inside the panel.

    The circuit board will have at least one row of screw terminals. At one end or the other, look for 2 screws marked “AC”, “Trans(former)”, or “XFMR”. Loosen one of these 2 screws, and pull the wire free. Be careful not to let the wire touch anything, or you could fry the transformer. By the way, don’t be concerned about electric shock, since the transformer only puts out around 18 volts.

    Set your DMM to measure “DC Volts”, within the range of 12 volts. Touch a probe to each battery terminal, and check the voltage reading. You’ll notice the voltage dropping, hopefully not too rapidly. A good battery will drop steadily for a few minutes, then level off and even begin climbing slightly. If yours behaves this way, and stays above 12 volts, the battery is good.

    If after 5 minutes or so the voltage continues to drop, or if it ever goes below 12 volts, the battery should be replaced.

    How to Replace an Alarm System Battery

    If the battery fails the test, reconnect transformer power so the system will run when you take out the battery.

    Remove the connectors from the battery terminals. They are the quick-connect spade type, and simply pull-off and push-on. Take the unit to a battery store, where they will sell you a replacement battery of the same size.

    Note that the new alarm system battery must have the same rated voltage as the old one. The amp-hour rating should be the same or higher.

    Label the new battery with the date, for future reference. If you use a black Sharpie, it won’t show up well if the battery casing is also black. In that case, add a short piece of masking tape, and write on that.

    Install the new alarm system battery, making very sure to match the positive and negative terminals to the correct wires: red to red, and black to black.

    Using your multimeter, check the battery voltage. It should climb slowly but steadily, as the alarm panel’s charging circuit does its job. If the voltage doesn’t increase after 5 minutes or so, check the AC power connections again. If they are good, you may have a blown transformer.

    Allow 24 hours or so for the replacement alarm battery to reach full charge. During this time, the keypad may still show a trouble light or low battery indication, but this will reset when the battery reaches a full charge.

    To check the plug-in transformer, set your DMM to the “AC Volts” position, and touch a probe to each AC terminal on the circuit board. You should see 16-18 volts or so. If not, you’ll need a new transformer. These are available online, or you can get a comparable unit from Radio Shack or other electronics supplier.

    Replacement is done by simply swapping out the old transformer for the new one. Unlike the battery, AC connections aren’t polarity-sensitive. There is no “positive” or “negative”, as the leads are interchangeable.

    5 Most Known HelpDesk ticketing systems

    More or less, every helpdesk software is basically a ticketing system – a system that tracks support tickets that come from customers and users in a form of a support email, or a web-based request from some website etc. User can then track the ticket status, read replies from the support team, add more information etc.


    SpiceWorks helpdesk – a free old-school ticketing system. SpiceWorks is a “downloadable” helpdesk app that is installed “on-premise”. It’s a Windows-based app so you will need a Windows Vista/7/8/2008-Server or similar machine, that your users will connect to using a browser. Technically, it’s based on Ruby and SQLite, but you don’t have to install those, the helpdesk app comes with all the prerequisites.

    The software is free, no catch, but the company asks you to register in their “community” – the place where IT pros (are claimed to) hang out, kind of a social network for IT professionals.

    The app has all the features you expect from a helpdesk, like a web-based ticket queue, email-integrations, network-inventory tracking etc. The UI is pretty outdated though. Also, no mobile support.

    Jitbit Helpdesk

    Jitbit Helpdesk Ticketing system is the only commercial system that offers both “cloud-hosted” and “on-premise” versions of their software. You can even buy the source codes and tune it if you want. The on-premise version is Windows-based, but we recommend going with the hosted one. Both versions are very moderately priced compared to most helpdesk software apps out there.

    The feature set is also pretty standard for a ticketing system – there’s a ticket queue, prioritization/categorization engine, Knowledge-base, file-attachments, search, AD-integration, JIRA-integration, automation and other tools. By the way, this one has the Google-Drive integration, not sure if your team needs this, but it’s a nice feature. Personally, we found the UI to be the most attractive among others.

    Request tracker

    Request tracker is also free and open-source. This app is Perl-based and requires a *nix system to run, it’s not compatible with Windows.

    Overall, the system is quite powerful, but the UI-design is also a bit outdated. The system is free, but the company offers commercial support (otherwise you’re on your own) which starts at $395 a month for a Bronze package. Which is quite pricey if you ask us, some cloud-based systems are much cheaper (while support is included).


    Freshdesk is the newest one. The company has a free plan (limited to only one support agent) and offers a “hosted” version only.

    This application offers a nice and tight Twitter integration module (with other social networks) in case you’re interested in this way of communicating with your customers. Freshdesk is also the only app that offers “forums” where your customers can hang out and discuss their issues with each other.

    Just like Jitbit, Freshdesk offers a powerful “automation” module, that triggers various operations upon various events. You can describe it as an “if this – do that” engine. For instance “if a ticket is overdue – send an email to XXX”. This is a must-have for a modern helpdesk.


    Zendesk. Of course. You must know Zendesk right? How can we leave this one out. One of the most widely used ticketing systems out there. The feature-set is pretty standard, nothing special to highlight. On the other hand – that’s not bad. It has everything you need.

    Zendesk is hosted only. You can’t download and install it on your server. Again, not sure if this is a downside. Not for us. By the way, even the hosted version has a way to integrate with your Windows Active Directory by installing a small script on your Windows server.

    Here, you have at least two inaccuracies: 1. If adapter is configured to use DHCP server, then exact name is not “NameServer” but “DHCPNameServer”. 2. If there are several network adapters in computer, then location of “NameServer” as you have written is incorrect.
