Drain Cleaning Machines

The mechanical drain cleaning machine, sometimes referred to as a cable machine or drain auger , is the oldest type of drain and sewer cleaning technology.

In the cable machine’s earliest form, simple flat metal tape was used to clear out drain obstructions and clogs. Flexible coil springs were later added to make it easy to navigate pipe bends and turns. These early machines were manually powered, often with a hand crank used to rotate the drain cable. As time went on, motors were added to make the task less labor intensive.

Although the basic approach to cable machines has not changed, the technology has been much improved and refined over the years. Machines are lighter and more powerful than their predecessors, cable and cutting blade attachments have become stronger and more rust resistant, and most importantly, cable machines are much safer to operate and cause fewer injuries than in the early days.

There are two major types of drain cleaning machines used today in residential and light commercial applications: sectional cable machines and continuous cable machines.

Sectional cable machines

These machines use numerous open wound cables from 4 to 8 and sometimes up to 15 feet in length. Sectional cables are joined one at a time to a power auger and rotated in the pipe. The power auger unit is kept separate from the cables until the pipe is cleaned. Because the two components of sectional machines are separate, sectional machines are usually considered lighter to transport.

The sectional cables are transported in a carrying case which looks like an open cage with a handle. Sectional cable machines are popular in the consumer rental market, because they can fit quite nicely into the trunk of an automobile and are easily carried by one person. However, sectional cable machines take longer to clean the pipe since you have to constantly couple and uncouple the small segments of cable. Also, they are difficult to use inside the house, because they splatter “sewer juice” as the cable rotates.

Continuous cable machines

These machines have a power auger unit with a drum containing a cable. The cable(s) is one continuous piece. The one continuous cable piece may consist of 25 feet, 50 feet, 100 feet or more, joined together by a coupling(s). The lengths of the cable may vary.

During the operation of a continuous cable machine, it is not usually necessary to add cables. A continuous cable machine is sometimes perceived to be heavier than a sectional machine because all these components — power auger unit, drum, and cable — are one single unit. The upside is that continuous cables are much faster to use and never splatter “sewer juice” so long as the drum is fully enclosed and not just an open cage-type construction.

What Is EMBOK?

Simply put, EMBOK is a framework illustrating and encompassing the facets of events management that is flexible according to the needs of its user.

Event management is the process by which an event is planned, prepared, and produced. As with any other form of management, it encompasses the assessment, definition, acquisition, allocation, direction, control, and analysis of time, finances, people, products, services, and other resources to achieve objectives. An event manager�s job is to oversee and arrange every aspect of an event, including researching, planning, organizing, implementing, controlling, and evaluating an event�s design, activities, and production.

Event management has been described as an �emerging profession� due to the fact that no academic, government-issued licensing, or private occupational certification credentials are required to practice this complex and responsibility-laden enterprise. Without such credentials, �professional� status is suspect and subject to degradation by the actions of untrained and inexperienced practitioners who are simply not aware of the scope of what needs to be learned in order to be qualified to work in this profession, as well as the scope of the legal and ethical responsibilities associated with such endeavors.

Event management encompasses a multitude of types of events. Although the industry has delineated itself into various categories, all represent the planning and production of an event that brings people together at a particular time, in a particular place, for a particular purpose. The event genres that may be considered as falling within the event management profession for the purposes of this project are illustrated in Table 1.

Business Corporate Events

Any event that supports business objectives, including management functions, corporate communications, training, marketing, incentives, employee relations, and customer relations, scheduled alone or in conjunction with other events.

Cause-Related Fundraising Events

An event created by or for a charitable or cause-related group for the purpose of attracting revenue, support, and/or awareness, scheduled alone or in conjunction with other events.

Exhibitions, Expositions Fairs

An event bringing buyers and sellers and interested persons together to view and/or sell products, services, and other resources to a specific industry or the general public, scheduled alone or in conjunction with other events.

Entertainment Leisure Events

A one-time or periodic, free or ticketed performance or exhibition event created for entertainment purposes, scheduled alone or in conjunction with other events.

A cultural celebration, either secular or religious, created by and/or for the public, scheduled alone or in conjunction with other events. (Many festivals include bringing buyer and seller together in a festive atmosphere.)

Government Civic Events

An event comprised of or created by or for political parties, communities, or municipal or national government entities, scheduled alone or in conjunction with other events.

A commerce-oriented event to facilitate bringing buyer and seller together or to create awareness of a commercial product or service, scheduled alone or in conjunction with other events.

Meeting Convention Events

The assembly of people for the purpose of exchanging information, debate or discussion, consensus or decisions, education, and relationship building, scheduled alone or in conjunction with other events.

A private event, by invitation only, celebrating or commemorating a cultural, religious, communal, societal, or life-cycle occasion, scheduled alone or in conjunction with other events.

A spectator or participatory event involving recreational or competitive sport activities, scheduled alone or in conjunction with other events.

Professional knowledge, which consists of technical knowledge, specialized skills, and ethical standards used to function within a professional jurisdiction, must be transformed into formal knowledge systems combined with experiential or situational knowledge systems. The proposed knowledge domain structure (Figure 1) captures and makes explicit the scope of this knowledge system, and provides a taxonomy (Tables 2 through 5) for incorporating additional expertise, experience, and transferred knowledge and applications. Note that the Units and Topics are in simple alphabetical order. For more detail on the EMBOK Structure see Updated Structure.

Many of the units and topics represent specific specializations, disciplines, or its own distinct industry, with its own body of knowledge and credentials, some requiring specific licenses in many jurisdictions, with which the event manager must interact or subcontract in order to plan and produce an event. For example, catering management, traffic management, and emergency management may all be included within the scope of an event, and all are distinct professions with their own expertise criteria, curricula, and credentials.

At this stage the knowledge domain structure represents a simple mapping of concepts. It is not practical to numerically quantify the units or topics contained in the various certification competency blueprints, vocational qualifications, guides, and texts because, as yet, standard units and terminology have not been adopted by the industry as a whole. This initial taxonomy will serve as a platform that will enable expert participants, from a variety of disciplines around the world, to continue its refinement and develop a shared understanding and interaction.

The proposed domain structure can serve numerous purposes and uses, not the least of which is the illustration of the scope and complexity of this profession to internal and external constituents and stakeholders, current and future practitioners, and allied and supplier industries, thereby increasing respect and reverence for the profession of event management and legitimizing and �expertizing� the functions of event management.

The establishment of a global Event Management Body of Knowledge (EMBOK), with this domain structure as the foundation, may influence all levels of academic and professional development programming (formal, association, and informal), research, publications, credentialing, product development, specialization, assessment criteria, and many other outcomes. As usual, once a tool is available, its uses expand beyond its originally conceived purpose.

Considering the fact that event management spans such a variety of event genre and disciplines, the development of a multi-disciplinary-validated Event Management Body of Knowledge will set the stage for development of practice standards that will lead to the legitimacy of event management as a true profession, as well as create a platform for curriculum development, competency assessment for employers, and career mobility for practitioners.

Further development, improvement, expansion, and ratification of the Event Management Body of Knowledge Project depends on the review and input of a broad variety of industry practitioners, experts, certification bodies, and academicians from the full spectrum of event genres and industries.

Concepts and Applications of the process

A method of forming metallic coatings (plating films) on subject metal surfaces submerged in solutions containing ions by utilizing electrical reduction effects. Electoplating is employed in a wide variety of fields from micro components to large products in information equipment, automobiles, and home appliances for ornamental plating, anti-corrosive plating, and functional plating.

A plating method that does not use electricity. The reduction agent that replaces the electricity is contained in the plating solution. With proper re-processing, virtually any material such as paper, fabrics, plastic and metals can be plated, and the distribution of the film thickness is more uniform, but slower than electroplating. This is different from chemical plating by substitution reaction.

Chemical Process
(Chemical Coating)

The process creates thin films of sulfide and oxide films by chemical reactions such as post zinc plating chromate treatment, phosphate film coating (Parkerizing), black oxide treatments on iron and steels, and chromic acid coating on aluminum. It is used for metal coloring, corrosion protection, and priming of surfaces to be painted to improve paint adhesion.

Anodic Oxidation Process

This is a surface treatment for light metals such as aluminum and titanium, and oxide films are formed by electrolysis of the products made into anodes in electrolytic solutions. Because the coating (anodizing film) is porous, dyeing and coloring are applied to be used as construction materials such as sashes, and vessels. There is low temperature treated hard coating also.

Products are dipped in dissolved tin, lead, zinc, aluminum, and solder to form surface metallic films. It is also called Dobuzuke plating and Tempura plating. Familiar example is zinc plating on steel towers.

Gasified or ionized metals, oxides, and nitrides in vacuum chambers are vapor deposited with this method. Methods are vacuum vapor deposition, sputtering, ion plating, ion nitriding, and ion implantation. Titanium nitride is of gold color.

There are spray painting, electrostatic painting, electrodeposition painting, powder painting methods, and are generally used for surface decorations, anti-rusting and anti-corrosion. Recently, functional painting such as electro-conductive painting, non-adhesive painting, and lubricating painting are in active uses.

Metals and ceramics (oxides, carbides, nitrides) powders are jetted into flames, arcs, plasma streams to be dissolved and be sprayed onto surfaces. Typically used as paint primer bases on larger structural objects, and ceramic thermal spraying for wear prevention.

This is a process of metal surface alteration, such as carburizing, nitriding, and induction hardening of steel. The processes improve anti-wear properties and fatigue strength by altering metal surface properties.

This is a method of forming surface alloy layers by covering the surfaces of heated metals and metal diffusion at the same time. There is a method of heating the pre-plated products, as well as heating the products in powdered form of metal to be coated.

PKCS#12 or PFX format Is binary format storing the server certificate, intermediates certificates, and private key in one file. Usually has the extension .pfx or .p12. Typically are used on Windows machines.

When converting PFX format to PEM, in one file will be included all certificates and private key. To separate it, you need to open this file in a simple text editor, copy every single part (with BEGIN and END lines) to different files and save it as certificate.cer, CACert.cer and privatekey.key.

Remote Support is a tool that Information Technology (IT) staff can use to help students, faculty, and staff with technology requests.

This remote assistance and screen-sharing service gives the community the convenience of receiving technical support from IT support staff across campus networks or across the Internet. This provides technology support that is more timely and efficient for the University.

Remote Support works with current Windows and Mac OS 10 computer operating systems, as well as with Apple iOS and Android smart devices.

How Does the Remote Support Tool Work?

  1. Log an issue with the Help Desk or Technology Request Form. This tool does not replace the Pepperdine Help Desk. The community will still log a technology request with the Help Desk or the Technology Request Form as usual.
  2. User initiates session. If the technology issue requires the use of the Remote Support tool, the IT support staff will ask the user if he or she would like to start a remote support session.
  3. Accessed through http://helpme.pepperdine.edu . To access the Remote Support tool, IT support staff will provide the user with a unique seven digit session key to start a secure one-time session.
  4. Quick software download. When the session key is entered by the user, the remote support software downloads to the user’s computer and sets up the possibility for the support staff to view the user’s computer screen. When the user gives permission, support staff can assist the user with their tech issue.
  5. Quality customer service. Each remote session is logged and recorded to allow IT managers to audit and to ensure quality customer service.
  6. User ends session. At the end of the session, the user terminates the session and the Remote Support software is uninstalled from their computer.

What is Happening to Alert Central?

SolarWinds announced recently the End-of-Life of their Alert Central (AC) product. If you are currently using Alert Central, what does this mean for you? To begin with, no one is taking away Alert Central. Since it’s a free product, there is no licensing, or code, that will turn off, or stop working. Still, we at OpsGenie have decided to ensure that existing Alert Central customers will be taken care of. We are aware that many customers are using a free AC product today and don’t necessarily have the budget to buy a replacement solution. Therefore, we have agreed to offer a special FREE tier for existing SolarWinds Alert Central users. For anyone unfamiliar with OpsGenie, we are a SaaS IT alert management software solution.

How do I migrate my configuration from Alert Central to OpsGenie?

Due to the differences in how the systems function, consume and process information, the fact that SolarWinds Alert Central does not have an API interface and underlying differences in capability and functionality, it is not possible to automatically migrate your configuration from SolarWinds Alert Central to OpsGenie. Fortunately, however, given the way OpsGenie works, it requires minimal effort to configure OpsGenie to have your core functionality replicated and be up and working. You will be expected to configure (in OpsGenie) the SolarWinds NPM Integration, and configure your SolarWinds environment. For more information click here.

I was using Active Directory for user Import. How will this work in OpsGenie?

In OpsGenie, you can:

  • Create Users directly from within the UI for more details.
  • Leverage OpsGenie’s User API to create Users.
  • Leverage OpsGenie’s SSO capability (available at the Enterprise Tier).

NOTE: As a part of this program, and due to the differences with how users are managed in the two systems, there is no migration utility to automatically create your existing users in OpsGenie from either SolarWinds Alert Central or repositories like Active Directory.

How many Users, Integrations, and Features am I allowed to use in OpsGenie?

OpsGenie provides a Tiered level of service:

  1. For SolarWinds Alert Central customers, there are two default plans: A Lite plan A Pro plan.
  2. Refer to the FAQ on OpsGenie’s Pricing Plans for specific details regarding features and pricing for the SolarWinds plans.
  3. Refer to OpsGenie pricing for additional information.

OpsGenie is a cloud-based (Saas) IT alert and incident management software solution for development and operations teams. We at OpsGenie believe that we have a more complete solution than what is available within Alert Central today. In fact, SolarWinds found our platform to be so comprehensive, robust and extremely flexible, that they recently moved their IT Ops team to the OpsGenie platform. The previous SolarWinds product certainly had many fans, but both SolarWinds and OpsGenie wanted to make sure that their customers currently using AC had the right long-term solution.
